"BORN OF THE MADHOUSE." j…
MR. SPENDER & THE! MOND CASE. 1 (Continued from Page One). I legal proceedings than the vindica- tion of Sir Alfred Mond or of our- selves. Democracy has to ask u-1 self whether it can survive and ob- J tain the service of its i,ble,-t i-tien the v are to be made the victims of theproceedings of which this trial is the culmination. Sir Alfred Mond's sole offence is that he has given talents of no ordinary order to pub- lic work. He is, all the world Ijnovvs, a wealthy man who has been the organiser and director flome of the most valuable manu- facturing industries in this country. might have re- mained within his mvn business circle and become immensely more wealthy. He preferred to give hims>!f to public life, to relinquish I a large part of his business inter- ests, and to devote bis brain and no inconsiderable oorfion of his wealth I to the service of the State. record and that of his family during the war is one of which any man might be proud. It has been one or single-minded devotion to the in- terests of the country in which lis was born, and a complete vindica- tion of the claim of i the race to which b8 belongs to be loyal citi- zen?. owing allegiance to the nation which has ?'iv?n them be oppor- tunity of p!aym? a fuU paM in pub- lic life. That he should have done thpe things is Sir Alfred MomF"? offence. He has made himself a conspicuous public man, and for no j oth?r reason he has been persecuted j and pursued wi?h an ingenuity and ] cruelty.Hun knows no limits. ¡ A PROBLEM TO SOLVE. To make such proceedings as these impossible is, as we have said, a pvcblt.ni that democracy must solve. Unless men of high talent and upright- character can enter public life without. being subject to baseless attatk and repeated slan- der. the service of the State will ueeome a penance from which ry g and government-will be left to these who have neither characters to lose nor wealth to sacrifice. The libel action brought by Sir Alfred Mond will have domy good service if it brings home to the public mind the neces- sity of finding s"K)n better means I than at present available of de- fending from wanton and un- founded attacks the Y)rii-atfl- <, har- acters of devoted servants of the public (»oo(!. THE Ii PALL MALL." I The Pall Mall Gazette." ob- *F, r v must congratulate Sir 1 Alfred Mond on the result of bis action agaipst the reckless libels of which he has been tlin victim during the war. The verdict of the ■jury should put a for all. to these mischievous asper- sions on his patriotism.
