PRODUCTION, CHEAP. NESS &…
PRODUCTION, CHEAP. NESS & PROSPERITY. I The Only Remedy. I By W. G. HOWARD GRITTEN, M.P., j Member for the Hartlepools. I The announcement that Prince Albert j is taking a course of economics at Cam- j bridge is, indeed a sign ot the time* j Despite *.he'fact that London is the capit- al of the greatest Empire of Commerce in j tho annals of history the fact is that in the past it,; ciazenns were taught'little or nothing regarding economics. It is, in- j deed, no exaggeration to stat(c, that if the workmen of to-day hful as scholars been given a;; good a knowledge of economics as they we"? of geography the industrial problems which we have to face at the present time would be far less seriotic; than they really are. Like every other grent conflict in the World's history, the European been MIowed by a period of indu,:trial unrest and anxiety. The artificial pros- perity thnt necessarily existed during the war has given the ;cat mass of the j British people a false idea of the rela-' tion between wealth and money. Had the working man of to-day been given a course of economics at eehool he would know that it is impossible for the in- dividual to lie prosperous unless at the same time the nation is prosperous. If the nation is iiiiible to m:\ke ends meet the individual is most- cert-unly involved in i!s ruin. VALUE OF THE SOVEREIGN. Money -is not wealth; it is merely a I, medium for exchanging one article for another. When money increases in quan- tity it falls in price, or in other words, purchases less goods, so tha t you have to give more money for the same quantity of goods. The reduced value -ct upon the pound sterling in Americ-a, known as the rate of exchange, is it typical case in point. In August five years ao tho British sovereign could purchase in America meat, wheat, cotton or any o;rbrJ poods to the value of 4 dollar- and SIi cents. To-day the pound sterling can only buy 4 dollars worth. In America, therefore, ,tlip va-luo of the English pound has de- precii»ted by nbout 17 per cent. At home the same British sovereign, or the of paper tli,,i,: has taken its place has lost value to even a greater extent. Before the war ten shillings would bpve bought more food, more clothns. more coal than can Ix bought with one pound to-day. It follows, therefore, that the only way to reduce prices is to i'lcreane production. With ahundance of supplies profiteering must neces&arilv receive its quietus With increased prod uction foreign exchange would be restorer] to par. With plentiful supplies wages will purchase more food. bocS; and clothes. Increased output j means oc.mmorc'al prosperity and an in- creased standard ot life for the workers. AMERICA'S LESSONS. I Nothing is of greater importance to this country than a sneedv increase in j i the output of shipbuilding. At the pres- j cut time* ihe United States is building | ships faster and greater in number than we are because her coal and stel are cheaper These two essentials of all 1n- dustrial prod uction ore cheaper there, not because wage.s are lower in the United States, but because <he ont;put is -greater per man employed in Che coal ¡ mines and at the furnaces. The national need, therefore, is inetea«ed production t? pv?ry p!uwc of industry,. EvPiT machine in the conntry shouIJ hp ?ept going to its ?till every ivorker must mak? up his mind to increase in- dushial pro<lucticn, knowing that such a epur.-ft is the one and only rnad- to pros- j perity for hoth the individual and the j nation.
ICC ESTATE WORKEPTS. I ) -…
ICC ESTATE WORKEPTS. I ) ?i Decision for ?r. C, Ve!.?b!es j I Lleelln. I At Neath on Saturday the Bench gave their considered judgment in the seven summonses issued by Mr. Carr Williams, inspector under the Board of Agriculture nnd Fisheries, against Mr. Charles Ven- ables Llewelyn, Newbridge-on-Wye, and owner of the Ynysygerwn Estate. Vale of Neath, and son of Sir J. T. D. Llewelyn, I Bad., of Penllergaer, Swansea. Thesnmmonses were in respect of the al- leged failure of the defendant to pay tho minimum wage to seven men employed on the est.ate, according to the Agricul- I tural Board award. The case was heard a fortnight ago. The chairman of tho Bench (Mr. NLewis Jenkins), -?aid the Bench were of opinion That the men were not employed as agri- ?'uKural labourers, but a? estate workers in doing repaii-s, and, as 6ueh. they did I not agree that the men were entitled to the full minimum wage. As no evidence had been given for the prosecution as to 'what part of rheir time was devoted to agriculture, they had decided to dismiss the summonses, and ordered the prosecu- tion to pay five guineas' costs to the de- fendant. The Bench agreed to slate a case.

I TRAFFIC TROUBLES. ,
I TRAFFIC TROUBLES. I To &e Editor. I Sir,—With regard to your report of the meeting of tradesmen and manufacturers, re the bad stato of railways, I respect- fully suggest that, being an ex-railway- man of 15 years' service, on one of the largest railways in South, the railway control office should be done away with, or some .export railwaymen put in con- trol—men that have served outside the clerical staff. My contention is that a good reliable outside man would be of greater service in controlling the traffic than a man that has never doniuxl the uniform of a guard 0; shunter.—Yours, I e-tc." £ x-Haiiway»ian..
