- -, - TINPLATE wasesT I -0
TINPLATE wasesT -0 THE END OF A "LEASER" mmnssY. (BY PHILIP WASSELL.) In the first place I would suggest to Looker-on that, if this illogical assumption necessitates a reply, he should at least be gentleman enough to gr-ve his real name. In the second, wo working men do not u:-e the term "top Hand bottom" dogs; it is a pet phrase used only by some of the members of tbe Con- ciliation Board, and should bo dropped as goon as possible. Ijooker-on states that in iny 17th year I shout for the higher-paid man only. That is curious, considering that at the irregular meeting I was thr-re to represent the lowest men and boys in the mill, and, as later events will prove, did so to the satisfaction of the men concerned. On the real point at LSlH as to why the bonuses were appl'ed for and gran.t«i,- either I/ooker-on or the workmen con- cernfXl are WrQIlg. if it was only to meet the increased cost in the necessaries of life. What a bout the rise in the price of the commodity they were producing? Is it not to be token into account that tin- plates and e-lieet iron and steel have been selling at very nearly three times the pre- war prices, somewhere at about 180 per rent, advance? Doesn't lie consider that the higher1 skilled workmen should have a little share of that. and not ill pOr cent, only? If it is for the good of the nation that wajyes should only cover the bore cost of living, then let us have it universally from the highest to the lowest in the land let every man give hF; best to his country for the same rate of pay, and let that pay be regular, working or idle, in sick- ness and in health, and when people get' too old to follow their employment. There will then be no need for ambition and higher wages. Looker-on states that what we wero deputed to plead at the Conciliation Board is simply what both the employers' and workmen's representatives have aimed at since the Huns disturbed the world, and nsks what are we grumbling fI t,? We are gorumhIing because they have aimed for so long a time, and don't appear to get Any- where near the target. As to his reference to the £ 3 a week and bonus, I should-advise bim to go over his figures he will find that 40 boxes a shift won't do W hen were there better times in the tinplate trade than under the 10 box rule? If that har> continued, thore would have been more c,rn'tiniic-, d wou. mills workina and more regular employ ITl nnd nioi,c- re.,gt l ?ir nv-nt, and lc* men too old at 45. I arm amused at the way T,.rnk-c-r,on the short shirt and clog. 11° is Under the present conditions of t-ill, people of the world, nnd the competition abroad, don't let us try, to liti,! il)pr pro- riirfion by cutting down the higher skilled workmen's wage,? alone, but help to try and bring about a stete of affait" whereby the lower grarlp man, the h glieV 7rade man, and the employer, will all re reive a fair share of the profits accruing from 'thcir labour. I am confident every man will t.hen get at l,ast a litt:7;(: more flmn a brire living wage, and wi"Ii take h;s promotion in life as they o('c11" All sensible minded men realise thov there is going to be a big fight for trad" in the near future, and that competition will be strong. It has to be met; And competition will not be beaten by r ulliie- ing wages, or by workmen and employers' worMn? as?)n=t ?<-h other. They w11) have to work in unity. [This controversy must now oease.— Ed. C.D,T, ]
