IN THE WORLD OF P¡}9T.I
IN THE WORLD OF P¡}9T. I Disappointment at Bridgend. 1 Abei-avon"s X arrow Win. — i Resolven Still Shine, But Skewen Put Up Good Fight.! —Association Football in Swansea Valley. j Luu-iíer" writes :—The game between ) A)eraYon and Bridgend, which was played on the Brewery Field, Brids?nd. oi Sat.uT- day, proved sorely disappointing. The Bridgcmd forwards adapted them-lves to the kick and-d&sh style and a spoiling game, and in this they succeeded admirably in tiieir desire, but. through it spoilt an other- wise sparkling exhibition of the Rugby c0d". Bridgend fought like niggers to kc-ep the ball in, whilst Aberavon tried their utmost to apen out the game, and could not. A determined pack like Bridgend undoubtedly possess at present can spoil any game by such tactics as they possessed on Saturday. This style of play was probably the eace advice of Mr. Tom Schofield. who knew full wc-13 th?.f if the ball once got air it woukl be "up" with Bridgend, and whilst"thie Isile- reeded in keeping down the score it spoilt football. Two of the best of the Bridgend forwards specially watched Tom Poncford, and allowed him little rope, although there were present witnessing the match two other members of the Welsh Union besides lrfr. Schofield, vix., Mr J. Jarrett and Mr. Willis James, on the prowl for inter- national talent. Under the circumstances cne would have thought that everything h ?, that every t: b ".ng would have been done to assist and give the player a good chance. However, notwith- standing this special attendon, Ponsford played a great game, and was the outstand-1 in-g footballer on the fiekl. OLD-TIME CUP TIES.. The game was one which in its character would associate iteelf with the old-time cup! ties, when brute force took the place of j science and finesse, and fe.r this unhappy stats of affairs the Bridgend forwards were responsible. There M. however, no ctisglli". ing the ftiet, that Bridgend at presejit pos- casses a vary powerful pack, who in their peculiar style of play on Saturday ware superior to Aberavon in their scrummaging | and hea.?n?. This is abou? all that could j be said about them favourably, for when it came to open back play and combination they were out cf the running a^ compared with Aberavon, although the latter's backs were far below their f-c-raa, and seemed list- less and indifferent. So persistent and de- termined, however, were the Bridgend for- wards that it certainly looked at one period as if they were going to create a genuine surprise by defeating the conquerors of Pcntypool, and if this occurred, as it very I; nearly did, there would have been great joy in the Scbofitldia-n heart -o,or his little game. HOW THE TEAMS SHAPED. In A. P. Tnomae and A. Morgan, Bridgend have a couple cf very useful and speedy three-quarters, who are worthy of better company. Caswell and Downs, a.t half, re- quire a lot of learning. S. Jones was a fair custodian. The best of a rollicking, deter- ed pack were Dick Thomas, W. Gronow, B. Jones, and Bradshaw. Coming to the winners, they were as a whole clean below their form, barring Con Evar, at half, and Tom Ponsford, Charlie Jones, Dai Ree*. and Beb Randall in the forwards. Fred Potter, who substituted Guthrie Morgan at outside half, did fairly well considering that he has not been in active service for some time. Both wings, especially A. Lang, were badly off their game, and the commit- tee will do well to have a care in this direc- tion. To all appearances J. Jenkins, who played centre to Lang, and played a very good g line too, ssems likely to make a better wing. E. B. Rees can be escuued for not showing his u-cual brilliancy, as he suf- fered from an injured knee. It was a game which did not land itself to any interesting criticism. However, bewara of Maesteg on Saturday next, as they will be certain to emulate Bridgend and play tfea kick-and- rush game. I RE POLYEN STILL WINNING. Resolven forged another link to a long chain of successes on Saturday, and at t,he same tnne maintained a ground record. which has been the pride of the Valley boys for the past two seasons. Skewen were the visitors, and they fielded their strongest side, which included- Jack Grif- fiths, of the Y.M.C.A. team, whom Neath went unsuccessfully angling fcr the Fame afternoon. It was an excellent game (writes "Rover") and was watched by a. large and enthusiastic crowd. It was soon apparent, that the Skewenites knew where .the power of te homesters lay, and kept til ) ball tight The opening stages were in favour of the visitors whose forwards showed surprising dsob. From a scrum on the home line Powell got away and flinging out to Ben Johns, the latter raced to mid- field. wbere be cross-kicked, but the bag rolled ieto touch as Miles got to it. This was the tirmi.W-poiiat, and Resolven never looked Stack. From a line-out Madley got away, and passed out to Taek Brown, who sent on to Reggie Stroud. Characteristic of him, he dowbled and dodged until he made a, beautiful opening for B?n Johns to score between the posts, Dai Evans adding j tl%, extra poatts. It was a magnificent bit cf combination, and sk-nt the crowd en- thusiasticafiy cheering. The visitors never i lost heart, and by sound dd:mee and judi- cious kicks to touch by W. Thomas and Jack Griffiths, prevented Resolven from in- creasing their load up to the interval. PLAY IN SEMI-DARKNESS. It was a spirited re-start, both sides in- fusing plenty of dash into the game, and for fully ten minutes pJay ruled in the centre. At last Powell made a. lovely burst. but when a few yards from the line he was observed to slip, and his lightning pass | to Reggie Stroud, wko was in close attend- ance, was knocked on. A moment later, Dai Evans gave the "dummy," and passing to Powell, the latter cross-kicked and rac- ing up the wing, Ben Johns scored the second try in the corner. Devonshire made a good attempt to add the extra points. Skewen bucked up wonderfully after this reverse, the forwards playing a grand game, and had the beat of a series cf scrums on the Resolven line. Nothing but equally brillant defence kept the visitors from reducing the lead, and it was a great relief to the home supporters when Miles dashed through a bunch of opponents, and I found touch near the centre flag. Skewen lIaft shot their bolt and in semi-darkness Resolven fought to the last minute to make a double-iigure victory, without success. WHERE THE VISITORS SHONE. I The Skewen pack held a slight advan- tage, but in the loose the Skewen front rank were brilliant. Madley, Joe Davif3 Fudge, and Whittem were the shining lights. At half, Dai Evans and Powell were regular marvels but the visitors quartet an- ticipated their movements, and Stroud and Evan Jones were too well marked tc go far. George Devonshire, at b vk, w? s in great form, his kicking and fielding always being safe. W. Tboma-s, the Skevcn full- back, also played a clinking game, and i the two tries scored by Ben JohL3 e.mid not have been stopped by hIm. DANYGRAIG DEFEAT CLYDA'JJT. Danygraig received Clydoeh as %isitor. on Saturday, and right at the cen,r.:ei« mcnt I must complain (writes Astral") against their late arrival. It was within a couple of minutes to four when they I ut in an appearance, and just turned <- quar- ter past fUllr when they kicked "7. If Le-ague chtbs desire fixtures with s.-coi:d class clubs then they must turn up earliei than this. Danygraig were faced with hav- ing to filtd substitutes for the whole of tlif ir back divibioo. Reel..who woe piayed a- centre three-quarter, showed prominence. Danygraig's points were secured by a pem alty goal, which was kicked by Jack Ward, an:1 a try score*! by one of the new for- j wards. The game was a very nice one rQ" wat-ch, but- the light was baa for the second half. Jack Ward was good, and de< serves credit for his display Poole got through a great deal of work;, and Rees should again be selected Tit Davies and Proeser, although two ir.sid? halve-, worked we Li, and were responsible for some smart movements The forward." should have } done hotter in the second half, and one is t inclined to think that they require more training and this must be paid attention to during coming week, as Treherbert will be met away, and Danygraig will ha-fik to take a strong team with them. ANOTHER VIEW. Clydach R.F.C were away to iJunygraig on Saturday afternoon (wiites Welsh Llew- tliyH'"), and a very good game resulted in a wilt for the homesters by a. penalty goal and a try to a try. As generally happens when they are up against a stronger and a. better team, Clyuath rose well to the occa- sion, and excelled themselves in general play. Their forwards played a hard and g-xnl game, showing well both in the tihtl and iu the loose, while Jones and Williams, at half, were prominent with smart' and. nippy play. Thanks to the inclusion of E. D. Davies and D. J. Ev-Lns on the wings the Clydach three-quarter line has been much strengthened, and now probably constitutes the beat quartette poese&scd by the Valley; team for seas-oruj pa.¡ AN AGREEABLE SURPRISE. The backs shone brightly, and the centre* played with a reduced amount of strain. The Valley men, who gave Danygrajg quite an agreeable surprise, made their oppo- l nents go ?1 ?h? way for a win, as bhcwt by the tact that both teams only crossed each, I other's line once each during the gMBe. AW the call cf half-time the homesters led ry a penalty goal to nil. The kick by Ward; was a really fine and great effort fr -an about half-way, and thoroughly deserved the points thus registered. both tries wene* scored during the second half, Tom Thomtve, who was coaspievbous in the forward lane, crossing over for Clydach. ASSOCIATION IN THE VALLPY-. I Port Talbot A.F.C. visited Clydach Saturday afternoon last, and played the MonJ Nickel Works A.F.C. to a draw in ao game in the second round proper of the Welsii Senior Cup competition. A fairIVA I good number of spectators witiwseed the struggle, but having Witnessed the g-iraa orte could uot help concluding that the standard of local play has somewbat dete- riorated from what it has been, far the ex- position given on both sides on Saturday failed to arouse the old-Lime interest and enthusiasm. It lacked the erstwhile keen- ness, and failed to produce tiroee clever aid) exciting incidents ami well-conceived Move- ■ ments which thrilled and comman<4ed tbet general admiration of the spectators. iit fact, the time on Saturday, although a Welsh cup-tie event, proved rather a tame affair compared with the great struggle* witMe&eGd within the V z.Hey euc1œure i» pa6t tiea?on?. j T A POSSIBLE :&EASO. 1 Mond did not field their strongest MPreo sontative side, both Charlie Carty t-autaiJ* rignt) and Hughie Davidson unside-left# being absent from the team. This neceesi* t-ated a re-ai rangement of the forward lin, Notman being sent to the insjide-lefs., Kelly to the outside-right, and Williams being called upon to fcli the insidc-rH^it p««it«y% Probably this l-e-arrangeiuent ac-jounts te some extent for the inferior standard 01 play witnessed, as it must bo ad-mitted that the absence of such highly-efficient ax-AS seasoned old warriors as C.irty and DaiA« so-n militated greatly ag-aiust the real ekeoo t-iveness cf the front, line. Another factot which probably furtiier contributed to ii-io inferior display given is this season's re- duced width cf the ground.. a wh"- esemed to somewhat izpset vhe kicliing c ik eulationfi of the players, the ball very tfteiq reacbingr touch whea the real object was to keep it iu. play. The Mond foi-wania showed much more individual work tfca-u oojfibined play, and one also lacked the long-kick pASising tactics which mode tbe in attacks so dangerous and effective in t4a paot. TURNER'S GOOD GAME. Ted Turner, despite the fact that Jennings* the visiting centre-half, gave him every at- tenti«n, played a good jaoe at centre-ior- ward, showing sjiiendid dash and well nigh scoring on some occasions. No^aiaji, att inside-left, played a hard and clevez -ameA but his tricky diddling aud 6h<<ft?kicN tactics did not ?eB<? tht?E?eI?oa toward* g-ood combination with Evans at outeide- left, as the long-kick pa?e weuld h?v< suit?t the ?tter'K pisy much better. Although hia, j opportunities were not so many as in pasa games, Evans played a good gome antf showed touches cf his old dangerous daster* on the wing, being seen going nicely along the touch-line occasionally. Williams, at inside-right, played a heady and appreq ci.ib? game, and gRve abundant sig7w of much promise. His play would, however* have been much more effective had he shown better judg-ment in his kickine. but. as things were he very often kicked rigiifc to the opposing backs, who experienced 118 difficulty in returning. i THE CHIEF AGGRESSORS. ivotly was slowr and ETs play at, out%ido right, was rather weak. In faClt, he lost sotme lovely chareco for his sid-a. McLaughlin Tinning and Fell were anaierti trio of halvee, and their effort-s were cf ai most active naAure, :18 the visiting f-D--WAldft soon found. Hodgson and Broome at back played well on the whole, but a bet.ter un- derstanding and less mis-kicking on their part would improve matt-era in the rear. Pfttt-ison in goal gave a good exposition in defence, and could not blamed fc-r the occa- sion he was beaten. Both goals weia scored during the second half, Mond draw- ing first, blood througli Notntac. The viait- i ing inende left soon equalised. The visitors p??yed well, their ccntre fM'w&rd. ccaira half and ri?S back being promh?Et w?h good play at timee. Mond, however, were the principal aggressors during the gaanSt and on the run of the play should havs > won. -»■
