Cycling & Motor Notes.
Cycling & Motor Notes. — a CYCLING. I Looking After the Inflci-tor. I One ot the most neglected items in the cyclist's outfit is usually the inflator. I have been frequently asked to pump up" with an instrument which worked so easily that obviously very little air was going into the tyre. The eauee in such cases is that the washer in the inflator has dried and is allowing air to pass. A little oil dropped into the inflator (having screwed the end off) will usually put that right, if you give the oil time to soak into the washer ajid enable that I to expand. A better plan is to uee vase- I line. The essence of it is to keep the washer soft and pliable; theai it will do ita duty of keeping the air in its proper place. You can always tell when a. pump it working properly. There is a distinct I resistance as one forces the air into the tyre. When it works too easily you are probably wasting two-thirds of your labour, Tar-Sprayed Clothes. I Complaints are spreading of cyclist's I clothes being damaged by tar thrown up j from newly repaired roads. But I con- ) lees to little sympathy with them. The tar is ueually covered with gravel if too much it is good neither for the tyres nor tor tho subsequent condition of the road. It must be spread lightly and I am afraid I that in such cases any cyclist riding fast over it will pick up some of the tar. But on the other hand a tarred road develops into a fine cycling surface and for that reason it is worth while putting up with j some disabilities. [ If on* is doubtful it is an easy matter ¡ to walk the hundred yards or so of tarred road, a course that ladies will usually fol- low, for they are mere Mrefuloi their skirts than we men are of our garments, MOTOR CYCLING. I The War Motors' Association. I I am told that the War Motors Associa- tion, Of 240, High Holborn, London, W.C.I, is doing very excellent work in enabling ex-officers and men to purchase at a. reasonable figure motor vehicles from among those not needed any longer by the Government. Arrangement have been completed with the Dtaposai Bonvrd of the Ministry of Munitions to hay oil the low- est terms a large number 61 motor cycl-ag and motor-card. Th^so are being resold to wounded officers and men to whom a oar or a cycle is Of real necessity. Only two and a half per cent, is added to the actual cost in order to cover adminis- tration charges, and there is no attempt made at all to secure a bigger, profit. A committee of experts has been formed to adviæ purchasers M to thb best vehicl?os for thlr particular n?eda. A good many motor cycles and motor cars have already j be?n dispceed of, and I understand that i the association is being extensively used, i rA Cause of Misfiring. I A very Common source of trouble with many machines, and te the novices it is guile 'fcflen terrifying A few days ago I cftiM across a fellow lieotor cyclist sitting tii e efMe ocf t^6 road with a mo%t d4ji°cted ap- pear^ife^. of •• nind was due to tire fh.ct that 'nm cycle was mis- firing. lIe didn't Call it by that name; he was far more expressive- Ae a matter of fact, lie i(--Ae4 t. novite, amd hod not the lea ft iiiaa #hat was the matter. Th-o t noise had eo frightened him that it was with great difficulty that I peuad him o remount, after I had re-adjrjsted his I plug. The reason of this particular oase I of misering was that the pomts were too kt the poin?ts far apart. The correct width <? the gap should be ?bout the wid?h of & "tcard. H ;s poiniB, too, were covered vith eoot, j owing to using too rich a mixture. There are, of course, many other cau«*% of mis- firing, among the most emifton,%eiig dit-, in the carburetter, fen ittprofiet mixture. I or a drop of water in the iwtrol. All Are easy to onre, once the cfcuee ias lx»en ascertained. MOTORING. Government Joy friders. I llhe findings of the select Committee on National Expenditure hive revealed some truly astonishing facta. Mr. Churchill, for instance, had two cars allotted to him, one by the Air Ministry and the other by the War Office. The weekly expenditure of cars garageVl At KJmingtón, all for the uefe Of ihè Air Ministry, WM £ 2,495 of over S1M,OM a yoor. Lár and expeiœive ?&r? Mve been used for conveying otncia?s from their home? to t6ir oAe?s. clubs and lunching haunts. This has been agoing on for & long time, and at & time, too wnen tradesmen were unable to pro- cure siifficent petrol to carry on their bus- inesses. It is now to be stoppk-d, but it should have been stopped years ago; In fact, it should never have started. Facts like these are not likely to help in seem- ing a big response to the Victory Loan. Motorists and Benzole. t Motorists have been severely handi- capped by not being able to buy and store benzole and other home produced motor fuel in drums, without going through formalities which, owing to the vagaries of Hie different authorities concerned, often assumed formidable proportions. As a result of representation# mad-e by the Automobile Association to the Home Office concerning the handicap imposed upon the use of home produced motor fuel by the exiting regvdatione for the storage of motor spirit, a conces- sions has been granted by the authorities. Henceforth it will be perinissable to store 50 gallont; out of 60, in a single receptacle Without a licence, nndtt- certain restric- tions, which will be fully eet out very shortly. The Wanderer. j

'1r: Dangerous Gas and Acids That • Hurt the Stomach-Sour the Food, Cause Dyspepsia, Indigestion, etc. A Safe Way t6 Treat Stomach Troubles at Home. -W t> JJL r.Xi: Many stomach sufferers Who are always 1 full of gas, and whose stomachs burn with acid after nearly every Thenl think these I things are the result of indigestion, when in reality they are the cause. It is just as foolish to give artificial digestants such as pepsin, etc., to a" stomach full of gas and acid, ai it would be for a man who had Stepped on a tack to rub liniment in his foot wthout re- Dlóvng the tack. i Some stomaelis generate too inuch gas and acid. Gas distends the stomach walls caiysing, a full, bloated, oppressive feeling, while the acid irritates; and. iafiames the lining of the stomach. Naturally, the: food ferments and ooui-o, digestion is of ten delayed, and stomach misery is the result. Artificial digest^nts will push this sotir, fermenting mass into the intestines and so relieve the stomach pain, but the acid f-still remains in the stomach, to generate raore gas and produce more trouble at tlie next meal. If you are using digestive aids ofter meals drop them for a while and instead get a few Strain tablets of Bisurated Magnesia from the chemist, and takp two tablets immediately after every meal. ThdSe will neutralise the ejrwtesive acid in your stomach; keep your food swoet, and ensure normal, painless digestion.
