I the annual meeting of the West Wai'es free Church i'edera'.ion at Cape] Goinery Swansea, on Tuastlay, the W. D. Rowlands (Carmarthen) presided. It was decided to eend the follvwj ng t2 kg-ram to the l'rime MinLiter:— Wt.it Wales Federation of Free Church Councils assembled in Swaruca. congratulates you. upon the conclusion of Peace, and upon your noble effort.—E. Ungoed Thomas, &C.re,ary." Several suggestions made for the pur- pose of celebrating Peaxie were emùolhd in a resolution fra.med by Dr. Itaw'lings, iles'srs.. Richard Ma.rtin and A. Potter, calling on raunicip&iiti'es for iniitcd Peace Thanksgiving Services, suitable entertain- ment for the children, and that the poor bo provided for in the celebrations. The Rev. II. J. Roes,.Aberystwyth, gave a report of tho committee of tho four denomination^ which been dealing with the question of a Sunday School Union for Wales, lie poinied out that there liad been a steady decrease of mem- bers in their churches, and he thought a deal could be done it tlioy couid get co-operation in Sunday School work in j some such union as they had in Iln^nd. Oil the motion of tho Rev. iiurof Walters, Swansea, it was decided that a Sunday School Union for Wales should be formed. A testation was passed against Sunday trading and games, proposed by the Rev. j; Wi.ia?, Llanelly. j CINEMAS. I The Secretary said a suggestion had come from a local council tuat cinemas should be limited to public-house hours, it was thougnt in tome districts fhat if che hours of tho cinema wero i-Lt,iucect, the morality of the place would bo con- suited. Mr. W. J. Jones said he did not think the justices had power to curtail houra II 01 cinemas. The iuiv. Thomas. Morgan, Skewen, moved:— I Tilt this conÚ,Tenoo exprosies its deep sorrow thafe so many church juiam- frequent cinemas, and thereby absent themselves from religious services held I in connection with places of worship. The Rev. David Price, in the course of I rlio discussion, said that, though he did not attend, ho thought ctnema.s were much improved, and sometimes were better than their sermons. j The los-olution wag adopted. 'I It was decided to hold the next annual Meeting at Lianeilv at a time to be alter- j wards arranged. A resolutioll on day schools and mili- tary training, passed last year, was re- ( aifirmed, as were also ethers on post-war conscription amI conscientious c)bjectors. Another resolution entered tho serious j and emphatic pretest oi' the conference j against the. Dr. I Kawlmgs referred to the jjreat increase oi juvenilo depravity, untruthfulness, and dishonesty. The hoihe was usoless now, the only way whs the introduction of the Bj)lp into day schools, if not, they were in *Itil.er of having the foundations of morality shaken. Ah amendment t-o rofer the matter to the National Council was lost by a small majority, and it was resolved that the II time had come for systematic sunpl? Bible ii?tructioi\ for the day schools in Wales. "Mr. Cook Danos took the chair, and thanked the members for t?e honour. i Votes of thanks were passed to the retir- ing chairman, and to the authorities of Capel Gpmer and Mount Pleasant, and tho conference concluded with the Doxology.
I THE UNIVERSITIES.
THE UNIVERSITIES. Principal Trevor Owen on the I Easier Path. I At Swansea Grammar School prize- giving on Tuesday the Mayor presided, and apologised for the absence of the Mayoress, for whom Mrs. Ivor Gwynne j presented the prizes. The Headmaster (Mr. J. Trevor Owen) thought in that first prize-giving since tho war they should bear in mind the J many old boys of the school who had laid j down their lives to secure that peace, j lie proceeded to read to an impressed gathoring the huge list of 72 old boys, of all ranks and arms of the service, who j have made the supreme sacrifice. The I Ratherinsr stood in silence as a tribute. DAY OF TECHNICAL EDUCATION. I The Principal read a letter of regret at non-nt ten dance from Ald. Ivor Gwynne (the chairman of the Education Commit- tee), who congratulated all the boys, the principal, and the masters. The war had i convinced the whole nation of the neces- sity for paying greater attention to j higher education, more especially to technical education. Hence their advo- cacy of the claims of the Technical College for recognition in the University. (Applause.) ) Principal Owen, in his report, hoped that was the last occasion on which con- siderations or economy would necessitate { certificate substitutes for real prize's. Considering nearly 700 old Grammar School boys lia( l served their country in the services during tlio last live years, they had, reason to lie thankful that such j a large proportion had returned. THE UNIVERSITY. I He hoped a far larger proportion of the boys would in future consider entering j the universities. So far the proportion from Wales, and he believed frOin Swan- j sea, had been by no means satisfactory, and was not nearly high enough, and i the time had come, in his opinion, when j it was neces-u-y to impress upon the boys of ability tho increasing importance of thinking about a university career. j Next year in that school they were t hoping for a considerable improvement in bating at. least three boys in Cam- bridge, three In Oxford, and at least ten in the Univcrsity of Wales, which now included the future University College at Swansea. AN EASIER PATH. The path to the University was being made easy, and any body who worked honestly and did not neglect hiS oppor- tunities could easily prepare himself for a course of higlwr cducatitm, It was his duty to do so, because his country would demand the services of the best I brains we could produce in the strenuous Jt«ya that lay before us. If boys of the Grammar School type did not aspire to a thorough knowledge and equipment, he did not know how the country was going to recover from the r nor mo us losses of the last five years. The country needed not only serious young men, but the very best brains trained to their highest power. Ignor- anee in the coming days would -.be at a discount, and a happy-go-lucky entry into a career would lead to disaster and failure. I The work in the trying war period had | I wen &arisfactory, and he especially oon- gratulated Neil Evans, who won a good i scholarship at Aberystwyth, and Mr. Lewis and Mr. Atkins on their return i from the Army, and especially thanked j the staff for loyal work in a difficult period. ) Mrs. Ivor Gwvnne then presented fh J t prizes.
