A CRUEL STEP-MOTHER.I
A CRUEL STEP-MOTHER. I GOYl.;RX}Œ"T m'¡"IC IAJ} WIFE .SENT TO PHLSON. Yr. Florence Lupton, a mamed lady, living at 36. Childebert-road. Balham. appeared at the South-Western Police-court, London, to answer a eummons ialled by the National1 Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children for cruelly ill-treating Ida Lupton. Defendant was stated to be the wife of a Government official in a good position, and the girl in ques- tion was her step-child, there being five children by the husband's first wife, and five by the present wife. The family used to live at Ventnor. and the course of cruelty prac- tised towards the girl culminated after they had come to Balham. On April 14 the child fled for protection to a sister who was in ser- vice, and the facts were brought to the notice of the society. Daisy Lupton and another sister named Violet having given evidence, the girl Ida. who looked wry ill, ?g c?ded. Her ??"mother, she said, had beaten her about twice a week, sometimes with a stick. at other times with her fist.—Dr. Aulad said the girl had abra- sions on the face and neck, probably caased by blows from the fat or a stick. She looked thoroughly cowed. For the defence Lily Lupton, eighteen, and Heneage Lupton, twelve, stated that Ida had been well treated, but she was tron&eeome. They admitted, however, that they bad seen their step-mother beat Ida with a stick, and the boy admitted that an abscess on his now was caused through his step-mother striking him across the face with a stick.—Mr. Garrett said no one who had seen the cowed rlemeanour of the girl could doubt that she had been ill-treated, though, perhaps, there was not strong evidence of extreme violence. He I sentenced defendant to one month's imprison- ment in the second division.—Mr. Lupton aid he should appeal against the decision.
IA HAMPTON COURT GHOST. I
I A HAMPTON COURT GHOST. During the past few days one of the ghosts said to haunt Hampton Oourt Palace has re-ap- peared. and spOOulatlon is rife as to its iden- tity. An artist states that, while engaged on several ??-a t occasions In sketching old Flem- ish talry in the G-rd Watching Chamher. a at)eetm hand, white, delicate, and richly ie'elled. hae Dentatently intMJd between him and the tapestry. On its last appearance ho made a ba rried sketch of the hand, which bore brilliant diamond marquise ring on the forefinger. The artist is so unnerved by these visitations that he has suspended his sketching. The phantom hand is declared to be that of Queen Oathehne Howard, one of the wiv? of I i n¿ Catherine one day escaped from a r?m to which she had be? mnfined by ?der of the King, and on ba8teni across the Haunted Gallery was seized by the gDa.7ds. and. despite her shrieks and protestations, 10M re- moved to her room. Since then tbe scene has been re-enacted repeatedly by a tall figure clad in white.
