SOUTH WALES TRADE REPORTS.
SOUTH WALES TRADE REPORTS. CARDIFF. EXCHANGE, Monday. Although since Saturday the arrivals of tonnage liavo been fairly satisfactory, the coal market to-day was weaker in all departments. Best and second-class steams were in mode- rate request for sh¡pment this month, but, so far a8 could be ascertained, there was no forward buying. Best, large was obtainable at 20s, seconds at lSs 6d, and drys from 178 9:1 per ton, less the usual discount. Quotations for Bmall steam coal were also easier. There was a sligiht falling; off in tlje demand for honse coal. and the patent fuel and coke markets ruled easier. Closing prices:—Best steam "oal 20s to 21s, 8econds 188 to 19s, dry, 17s to 18s; best steam small 9s 6d to 10.. seconds 95 to 9s 3d, and inferior from 8s; best Monmouthshire large 178 9d to 188 3d, seconds 16s 9d to 17s 3d, and smalls 8s per ton; best house coal 228 to 24b; No. 3 Rbondda large 13s 6d to 19s 6d, brush 16s 6d to 17a 6d, small 1.1s 6d to 14s 6(1; Xo. 2 Ilhondda large 16. 9d to' 17s, through and through 15s 64 to 14s, and smalls 9s to 10s; patent fuel 218 to 22a 6d, according to brand; special foundry coke 36s foundry 303 to 32s, and furnace 28s to 29s. The outward freight market was quiet, and less than an average number of fixtures were negotiated. Kates for Italy and the Bay ports continued firm, and there was no material alteration in coasting freights. SWANSEA. During the past week th0 trade of the port displaxoo less activity than for some time past, due to insufficiency of tonnage and a falling away in tho receipt ofron and iron ore, and as tho total imports in the corre- sponding period of last, year were bOl1t 10 M0 tons aboy.) tho average, there is a considerable falling off in this branch. There is, bvv;cver. an increase in exports. The tin-plate trade was fairly brisk. The mports include: — Frr..n.e.e, 1.100 tons pitwood and 3G0 tons gene- ral; Oormany. 1,041 tons wheat ann 850 tons general; Belgium and Holland, 380 tonB potatoes, 420 tons silver &and, and 350 tonB general; Norway, 679 tons pitwood; Spain, 2,050 tons iron ore; Chili, 1.400 tons e0pper ore, &c,; New York, 414 tons general. Export!—Goal 46,944 tone, patent, fuel 7,963 toii?. and tin-plates and general goods 5,426 tons. SWANSEA VALLEY. The production of tin-plates last wcek at the various ocn1res of the Maple indu8try ?@ on a par with that f th pr0Ccding wk. ?t P-t.rd.?.. couple of miBs wera idle, bn, the three mills at Foxhole were once mora in full operation. The outlook in the steel trade is discouraging in the extreme. Some four months ago Cwmo bwrla #nd MHlbrcok closed down, and exhibit no indication of re-starting. Now tho four furnaces and bar mill at Cwinfelin are to follow suit. This state of things is entirely dID to the illlpOrtation of American tin bJxs. The three above-mention: works were adapted solely for turning out thi8 cla8s of bar. Both the latter concerns belong to the MC8srs, Thomas, who have now finally dccidod to Mtn 11,11 their tin-plate mills with foreign material. This firm contToIs on peventh of tho present trade in tin-platea, but no sheets are produced at. any of their works. Tho output of pig iron during the week was normal. Stocks are, however, increasing. The Mannesmann Works axe operating regularly, although not, so briskly as a month ago. The 8p"ltor refineries and copper establishments are actively engaged. A good demand exists for sulphate of oopper; consequently, such works :1" those of M""sri!, Porteous are reap- ing a good harvest. With the exception of the Riroharove Old Pit. which \Vn, ičIe for three out of the six days last weok. an the collieries were briskly employed. Prices for house coal remain t;nchan"d, but the demand for ,ame haB eased MnsiderabJy. Minor industries are, scarcely without eXOoôJ>tion. doing fairly well. DOWLAIS. Of tho staple industries in this district the coal trade is, of course, enjoying the greatest measure of pr()9pcrit.y, and appears likely to retain premier position awhile Last week the tonnage raised at the collieries reached very 8uMtant.lal fi¡;uTes, and the managernent have tho satisfaction of knowing the men to \)() at regular work, with only a small per- centage of absentees. The dispute at one of (he Voehriw pits, referred to arbitration, is reported to be nearing settlement, and the decision is being eagerly awaited. In regard to the iron and steel works, the week was not productive of any noteworthy feature. The same unvarying routine was observed in all departments, and the furnaces and mills were in operation and employed as a fortnight ago. Some heavy consignments of 8ted rails were handled, and these included a his- lot in short and medium lengths for colliery and other purposes. In this connection it may be men- tioned that the mills are being specially equipped for the production of rails for tram- ways. The manufacture of this particular type of rail has hitherto been neglected, but with the necessary facilities for a larg-e and speedy output there is every probability of he venture proving ruccessfu! and remunerative.
