TYPHUS FEVER AT CAltDIFF.…
TYPHUS FEVER AT CAltDIFF. I TO THE EDITOR OP THE WESTERN MAIL." J SIK,—May I ask your permission to correct some statements of your correspondent in this morning's issue respecting the recent epidemic of typhus fever ? One case only of typhus fever (not ten or twelve) was sent to an unoccupied house in Tyndull-street, which had been taken by the corporation for the purpose of isolation. The patient was attended by a nurse who had had the same disease. During the whole time she was uudor treatment there was no com- munication between that house and the neigh- bours. The other patients were convalescent, and perfectly free from fever, and were sent to their homes. They would have beell discharged in the ordinary wuy in the course of a day or two. There was au interval of five hours (not two hours) between the departure of the typhus cases and the admission of the small* pox oases, during which time the ward was thoroughly disinfected. Nearly all the bedding and beds were, destreyed immediately the patients had been discharged, the remainder being car- ried away tevthe corporation disinfector before the admisswm of the new eases. Not a single patient's bed was left in the building, and the statement, tht the new patients were put into beds that, had been occupied by the typhus patients is utterly false. I believe that the prompt -action of the medical officer of health at that critical time saved the town from whofc mightilave been a very Berious epidemic of 8ma1l7Pox.-I am, &c., smallpox.—I am, &c., W. HUGHES, I Medical Superintendent, Hamadryad Hospital, May 19.

LIVERPOOL, Friday. The market will be closed from this evening until Tuesday morning next for the holidays. Bacon The nearness of the holidays is re- flected ou the markets to-day, aud business for a time is virtually suspended. Hardly any ehange is noticeable in values; meats suitable for the Irish trade are steady and unchanged, but fancy cuts of bacon are easier, with sellers willing to meet buyers. Shoulders remain without im- provement, and can be pujehased at less money. Hams are hardly inquired for and values con- tinue to droop. Lard on spot is just a shade farmer, in sympathy with American cables, but the demand is still very quiet. For American refined there is more inquiry at steady rates. Cl?e?.e shows n. =ali,? from previons rates, wit the demand less active, in view of the ap- proaching holidays. American butter remains featureless Danish and Irish are in fair re- quest at recent currencies. Eggs are firm, i ex- periencing a better demand, but quotations remain unchanged. Beef is firm, the improved demand still continuing. Pork is ?ir., y held, but quiet. IMPORTS OF PROVISIONS. I .!I7~T7 j u ê 7. ||t E»! DISASTROUS LANDSLIP IN I NORWAY. A Router's telegram dated Chrisfiania Friday sa), :-L?t night a disastrous landslip occurred at ?aerdalen; in the district of North Trondh- jem. Twelve farmhouses, mostly of large size, sunk into the earth, and a large stretch of land was converted in a moment into a lake of slime and clay, which has now overflowed into the low-lying land near. It is feared that many persons have perished, but at present nothing is known. I
