THE WAR. I
THE WAR. I FROM THE DARDANELLES. LETTERS PROM LLANGOLLEN MEN AT THE FRONT Writing from the Dardanelles to his mother (Mrs. Eliza Evans, Church-street) under date Aug. 1st, Pte. Richard Davies, "A" Co. (Trans- port Section), 8th Batt. R.W.F., says: The Censor will not let us state the exact place we are in or the number of the blooming Turks our famous regiment is bowling over. The Llan- gollen boys who are here have been very lucky so far, only Jack "Martha" has been slightly wounded in the heel, but is improving grand; and poor Dick Hughes has been wounded in the shoulder by an explosive bullet. The others, as far as I know, are all right. The regiment has only lost very slightly compared with the number of Turks we must have killed. The Turks are very big, black men, some nearly seven feet high, but they have no pluck and that's where we beat them. Take the tip from me, we are on the verge of a very big victory. We shall soon get this over and then we expect to arrive at and inscribe our names on the walls of Constantinople. The weather in this part is so hot that it is almost unbearable. It is a cry of 'Water! water!" with us all the time. It is all very well for young. chaps in Llan. to talk about the war. Let theth come and see some sights out here. It would open their eyes. Pte. J. T. Williams, 'A" Company R. W-F- | writes home to his parents (Mr. John and Mrs. Matha Williams, Prices-square, Llangollen), under date August let, 1916, From the Mediter- ranean Expeditionary Force, at the Dardanelles I suppose you will be quite surprised to ear that I have been slightly grounded. I got a bullet through my right heel but I am getting on nicely now and expect to return to duty in a few days. We were in the firing line the second day we arrived here. We have had few casualties in our regiment, but we must have inflicted heavy losses on the enemy. One more from Llan has been wounded and that is Dick Hughes. I saw more of the Llan boys to-day; they have just come for a day ar two's rest, after being in the trenches, and James Eyton is all right. It won't be long before we are in dear old Wales again This would be an eye-oper for the lads in Llan who haven't joined yet; give them a chance to see something. Pte. Briscoe Roberts, "A Co., 8th Royal Welsh Fusiliers, late of Glynceiriog, writing home to friends at Llangollen, on July 27th, from the Dardanelles, says: We have almost had three weeks in the trenches and have been kept very busy, with one thing and another. It's grand—talk about life, we do see it here. We have not had any hard fighting so far, but plenty of sniping and bombarding going on and the shrapnel comes uncomfortably near at times. It's very hot here and, my word, you don't half develope a thirst. ;.The wat*,r is very scarce and very bad drinking, and a bottle of lager would go down grand. It's a deuce of a place-if you have money you can't buy anything in the way of cigs or baccy and the good people at home haven't found out yet that there are troops fight. ing out here as well as in France. Tell the boys that there are a, few Llan boys here aid that if they have, any eige to spare they would be most welcome—anything that will smoke. I shall more than likely have a stirring yarn for you in my next letter. :LLANGOLLEN MAN DIES FROM WOUNDS. We regret to hear that news has been received of the death of Pte. John Edward Jones, 8th Batt., R.W.F., son of Mr. Henry Jones, Garth (lately in the employ of Mr. J. R. Humphreys, Bache Mill). He was wounded in action in the Dardanelles, and his wounds have proved fatal. Brief intelligence of his death is all that is, so far, obtainable.

————I—■imwwi'—Willi mill mn mi nun HI H In Memoriam. THE LATE MB. B. BECKETT. By the death of Mr. R. Beckett, Siamberwen, Llangollen, the town loses a resident of excep- tionally high attainments in the walk of li e which he followed for considerably over century and from which, many years ago, be retired to reside at Llangollen. The deceased gentleman, who had been in failing health for some time past, was in his eighty-sixth year, leaves behind him a widow and several children, with a very wide circle of friends and admir- ers, to mourn his loss. He came to Llangollen from Hartford, Northwich, Cheshire, where he was the head of a noted firm of builders that has been associated with some of the most important Church restoration work and eccles- iastical building, leaving monuments of rare artistic beauty to his skill as a craftsman,in many parts of the neighbouring county. Singularly far-seeing and practical in all things when the proposal was made, some years ago, to materially alter the form of the old bridge at Llangollen in order to widen and improve it Mr. Beckett pro- duced a most attractive counter-scheme, to that which aimed at destroying the character of the ancient structure that attracted much atten- tion. It illustrated in a very forcible manner an outstanding feature in his character, which always led him to seek to conserve the ancient and beautiful characteristics in buildings with which, iu the course of his profession, he might be called upon to deal. An ardent Conservative and Churchman, he was an active supporter of local political and religious causes. The f iint-ral took place at Hartford, Northwicb, on Tuesday, the remains being conveyed from Llangollen by road to the place of interment, which was in the Parish Churchyard beside the remains of his first wife who predeceased him half-a-century ago. The principal mourners were the Widow and Miss Lucy Beckett, Llangollen (daughter); Lieut. Hartley Beckett, Royal Engineers (son) and Mrs. Hartley Beckett (daughter-in-law) Mrs. A. Peake, Chester (daughter) Mrs. Taylor, JLiver- pool (daughter); Mr. Ashworth, Dublin (son-in- law); Mr. William Lloyd Jones, Mile End Milts. Llangollen, etc., etc. The service was conducted by the Rector'of Hartford the bearers, including -9r. Wood, manager, comprising those who, in the past, were associated with the deceased in his business. A number of beautiful wreaths were placed upon the grave having been sent, amongst others, by: 61 From Mother and Lucy;" "All at Northbrook-road, Dublin;" Richard and Laura; Mr. and Mrs. Isaac'Roberts, Wharf Cottage, Llangollen; Mrs. Peske, Malpas Cottage, Chester; Mrs. Taylor; Mrs. Hobbes and children; All at Glanafon, Llangollen;" Dr. R. Drinkwater, Llangollen All at Cairns- moreIn loving memory from Emma and her two children In loving memory," from Amy Mr. and Mrs. William Beckett; Miss Driukwater, Llnngollen; Mr. R. Carden, Llangollen, etc. The funeral arrangements were admirably made and carried out by Mr. R. Carden, Castle-street- square, Llangollen. "I
