INK THE ROMANS USED I The ancient Romans oommonly wrote with a, metal -point (stylus) oil wooden tablets covered with wax (tabulae), but permanent records were written on parchment with a reed pen and liquid ?gment, or ink. At Haltem in Weetiphalik tiear the site of the Alu so fortress erectedoy Drusas in the year 11 B.C., was recently found (says the Scien- tific American") a bronze vessel containing a dried black mass, which Professor Kassner has decided to be Roman ink. The mads was found to consist chiefly o fsoot and tanriate of iron. It also contained smaller quantities of terri-oxide, copper oxide, clay, margnesja., gypsum, phosphoric acid, carbonic acid, alka- lies, and &a.r.d. These ingredient's probably represent chiefly accidental impurities, which have found their way into the old inkstand, but some of them may be due to the chemical action of the ink on the bronze vessel. The presence of an aromatic substance suggests J that the ink was imported from Italy, where the use of perfumed ink was common.

It appears from the evidence given at the official inquiry into the death of Miss Kate Eastman, of on don, that she left her hotel at half-past eight on the morning of January 1 for a mountain walk, dressed in R simple skirt and blouse and ordinary shoes without nails. She made for the Ecovets, and passed ahout the village of Panex, with the object of reaching the Plambuit Ravine, situated at a height of 1,138 metres on the left slope of the Ormont V al ley. —R eu ter.

FORMER M.PS SON DEAD FORMER M.P'S SON DEAD Mr. Harry A. James, youngest son of the late fr. Charles Herbert James, a former Member of Parliament for the Merthyr Boroughs, died rather suddenly to-day at Yaynor Cottage, Vaynor. The deceased gentleman, who was 50 years of age, was at one time an ink manufacturer, carrying on business in Bristol, but he had lived in retirement for some years past, and since 1905 had been totally blind.

A LABOURER'S THEFTS At Porth to-day, George Carter, colliery labourer, Ferndale, was prosecuted by Messrs. D. Davis and Sons for stealing a, portion of brattice cloth, leather strap, and hammer to-the value of 3s. 4d., their pro- perty. The theft was not denied, and a fine of El was imposed. Defendant was also charged with stealing a hand saw, valued ta 2s. õd., the property of Thomas Wathen, tim- berman, No. 9 Colliery, Ferndale. and for this he was fined £1.

ENGINE-DRIVER INJURED W. Hopkins, an engine-driver on the Barry Railway, while bringing a train of coal from Havod to Cadoxton last evening, met with an accident and sustained injuries to his head. He was taken home to 20, Oxford-street, Barry, where first aid was rendered by guard S. Squires, of the Barry St. Jobn's Ambu- lance Brigade, and was afterwards attended by Dr. Gillon Irving.

GUESSED 1 s. TOO MUCH William Edmunds, farmer, Crnmlin, was summoned by Mary Ann Thomas, single woman, Aberbeeg, at Abercarn to-day to show cause, &c. Mr. T. S. Edwards, Newport, prosecuted, and defendant did not appear. Mrs. Thomas, applicant's mother, said that when she was talking to defendant in regard to her daughter he said he supposed the bench would put 5a. a week on to him. How- eevr, the order was only for 4s. a week for fourteen years, together with three guineas costs and 12s. court fees.

BARRY TRADESMAN ARRESTED The police at Eastleigh, near Southamp- ton, yesterday arrested Harry Provis, hair- dresser, formerly of Barry, on a clarge of embezzlement preferred against him whilst in business at Gaerau, Bridgend. Provis, it will be remembered, disappeared from Barry some months ago, and is the holder of a certificate as the world's obampion 'barber."

MOMENTOUS ISSUES The Fight at the Polls I POINTS FROM ALL SIDES The issues of the present Parliamentary contest form the chief topio of conversation nowadays, a.nd they are worthy this oon- cern, seeing that they are probably the most momentous and far-reaching ever pre- sented to the decision of the voters. Readers of the" Evening Express" will, therefore, no doubt be glad to have in brief form, all of the most telling of the arguments u&ed on all sides by the parties to the contest. "Inviting Invasion Mr. John Bums at Walsall last night said the Opposition, were inviting invasion by talking stupidly about the unguarded con- dition of our shores. Who were these scare- mongers? They were the unemployable of commerce, the dullards in finance, they were duffers of trade, who asked for doles for their industry to make up for lack of brains ability, and adaptability, and by taxing our best customers and the food of their fellow- citizens were trying to impose upon this country a fiscal disability which all men ought to regret. Shriek No Argument t Mr. M'Kenna, the First Lord of the Admi- ralty, fc-ays the Government's "opponents. unable to face the constitutional issue, are. endeavouring to divert public attention by an outcry in the country thait oar naval defences are inadequate. But how can we reason, with rumour, or argue with a Ehriek." These ridiculous fictions are spread abroad at this time solely for electioneering pur- poses, and have not the sma;llest foundation. So long as I retain my present office the Board of Admiralty will not shrink from its duty of advising the Government to take whatever measures may be necessary to maintain the Navy in adequate strength for the sure -preservation alike of our Empire and our trade." I Deferred Liabilities" Lord Charles Beresford affirms that the Navy's deferred liabilities in chips, docks, stores, and men for the last four years amount to about £ 60,000,000 over present com- mitments. The Prime Minister's claim that the Government is maintaining the two-Power standard, and that the fleet is unassailable, was completely opposed to the Premier's statement in January, 1909, which was, of go alarming a nature that the Dominions immediately owbled offering assistance. "On the face of it." he says, "the Prime Minister's statement is incorrect. The Empire may find this out too late. For the first time in British history, the construction vote is less than that of a single Power." Lord Charles, in conclusion, gives figures to show that the Navy Lacks small cruisers and destroyers, and declares that it is 19,000 men short. How to Vote The Earl of Rosebery eays that on three out of the four issues on which the general elec- tion will be fought he is at variance with the Government. He is against the Socialism which he "recognises as inherent in the Budget," in favour of a reformed and efficient Second Chamber, and opposed tQ. anything in the nature of an Independent Irish Parlia- ment. A Terrible Risk" Lord Orewe, speaking at Ryde last night, said if the action of the House of Lords in rejecting the Budget was confirmed at the election they would claim the power of amending finance, and their grip upon the country would be permanently fixed. To embark on a system of protection in this country would be a terrible risk, and could not fail to be detrimental. a v Ignorant Lords 1 Mr. Alexander Ure, at Southampton, said it was in order to gain mastery of the purse strings of the (nation that our forefathers suffered and died. Whilst the Government were dealing with social evils they were inter- rupted by the House of Lords, who were ignorant of the causes of the suffering and sorrows of the people, and alike ignorant of the remedies which ought to be applied. 18 Revol ution t I Lord La.nedowne last nig-ht in Liverpool charged the Government with having in mind a, revolutionary change, the substitution for King. Lords, and Commons of a single- Chamber domination. Whatever t'he people of this country thought about the Budget or the House of Lords they were not going to allow any Government a free hand to turn them over to- the intemperate mercies of a chance majority in the House of Commons. He beliov-ed in the preponderating power of the Houee of Commons, and suggested the constitution of a House of Lords within the U piper House. The Lords opposed the Budget on its own account, and also because they did not want the country to be switched off Tariff Reform and switched on to another policy which they believed to be euioidal. Tariff Reform Mr. Churchill at Dundee argued that import dn/ties, besides being objectionable on other grounds, 'would not yield more than a third of the revenue required to meet ou,r new liabilities. Though some slender advantage might be obtained over the foreigner at first by tho sudden imposition of import duties, it would only be temporary, and the who,le of these taxes, together with the cost off collection, would be (paid in the end by our own people. It would be rather a strong order to pass a law saying that the funds of a Conservative, Liberal, or Socialist t.re- unionist should be taken against his wist to return a member of a particular political party. That was not the way to deal with democratic representation. The payment of members was the proper way. Viscount Milner at Wolverhampton last evening said the more Tariff Reform was attacked the more it grew in strength, and that the effeotive answers made to the criticisms directed against it were the strongest weapon in the armoury of its advocates. Colonel Seely, M.P., at Liverpool said Tariff Reform would reduce the amount of oversea trade, and lead to a reduction in the total volume of shipping in the Port of Liverpool, the lessening of foreign exchange would result in a reduction in the number of men employed, in a great loss of profit to employers, and ruin to those who traded pn a small margin with borrowed capital. "Enemy in Milford Haven Sir G Armstrong at Pembroke Dock last night said tihe time might come when they would hear the enemy's guns booming in Mil- ford Haven. He had heard two men arguing, and one asked what did it matter if a Ger- man Billy ruled over us. It would mean we had lost the iorotid heritage of a thousand years, and the war fr&emnity of a thousand million pounds before the enemy left these shores. Working-men will be ground to dust if ever this country falls before the foreigner. As Englishmen they should sit down and think it out. If the Radical Government had realised the situation in its true light, Pembroke Dockyard would not be in the situation it was at this moment. Safe From Any Combination Sir Edward Grey at North Berwick last night said conscription was a great burden, fiom which in this country, owing to our special situation, we ought to be free. Because by our navy we can protect our- selves from invasion. (Cheers, and a Voice: "Not presently.") "Oh, yes we can," reite- rated Sir Edward. "The navy has been fully maintained in a position to protect this country from any probable combination of fleets that can be brought against us." "Most Mischievous Things Dr. Macnamara, at Camherwell-In this party struggle most mischievous things, in the interests of the Empire at large, were being said, and he earnestly prayed they might not inflame international bitterness. The least they could do without ill-will was to see that our sea forces were kept in a position of supremacy. In April 1912 we should have twenty Dreadnoughts and Germany thirteen. That Irresponsible persons should drag the White Ensign into a party struggle was bad einough, but when distinguished statesmen, who had held positions of high responsibility in the Empire lent their great names and positions to a furtherance of the campaign, he con- fessed he found himself beglnninc to look appsehenewyeiy v" the future ofhis country.

LLOYD GEORGE AND LORD SAVILE Mr. Lloyd George, Chancellor of the Exchequer, has called upon Lord Savile to substantiate or withdraw his statement— That Mr. Lioyd George wa<s sitting com- fortably in the House of Oommons cheering at the top of his voice at the news of eaoh fresui disaster while those peers were gal- lantly figthting for their country, and while England was mourning, alas! for many of her eons. The Chancellor adds that he had already contradicted publicly this abominable accusa- tion Lord iSavile replied that, he had not seen such contradiction, and adds- I can only regret that I should ha.ve made, believing it to be true, any statement which was not strictly accurate. To be perfectly frank, however, even if I had seen your contradiction it would not have prevented me from reminding the meeting that during the Boer War your sympathies were avowedly on the side of the enemies of England. The speeches made by you at the time leave no possible room for doubt on that subject. To this Mr. Lloyd George writes, accepting Lord Savile's expression of regret, and adds- The remainder of your letter is scarcely relevant, and, if I may so, borders on the disingenuous. I ha.ve never concealed my opinions on the late war. I did not conceal them when one expressed such views e.t the peril of one's life, and I certainly shall net conceal them now, when I am confident that the vast majority of my countrymen take the same view cf that horrible blunder. But the expression of such disapproval is a very different thing from the exhibition of a reckless and indecent joy at any disaster which befell my country. To say that I rejoiced at such disasters is a dil-1- gusting calumny. It was rather the news of these defeats and of the tragic losses involved in them among our gallant soldiers who had been sent to their death because someone had blundered which strengthened my opposition to the war and made me the I more indignant against those who were responsible for it.

Glamorgan County Ball ANIMATED SPECTACLE AT BRIDGEND The Bridgend Town-hall presented an animated spectacle on Wednesday night on the occasion of the county ball The large hall had been transformed by the art of the decorator into a beautiful ballroom Along the front of the platform was a row of palms, chrysanthemums, and other flowers, and the platform itself was charmingly docorated to harmonise with the hall, and luxuriously furnished Herr Julian Kandt's London Ba.nd was accommodated on a dais. Supper waa taken in the judge's room of the county-court building adjoining. There were altogether about 170 present. The decorations were in the hands of Messrs. Ben. Elvans and Co., cf Swansea, under instructions from a committee, consisting of Lady Llewelyn, Mrs. Nicboll (Merthxrmawr), Mrs. O. H. Jones, Mrs. J. G. Moore-Gwyn, Mrs. Edwards-Vaughan, Miss Sybil Williams, Mr. R. W. Llewellyn. and Major C J. I Edmondes. The secretarial duties were dis- charged by Messrs. J. 1. D. Nioholl and W. Cope. Owing to the death of Mr. Morgan S. Williams, several house parties were absent, inclading parties from St. Donat's Castle and Miskin Manor.

I UNIVERSAL SERVICE MOVE The London correspondent of the Birming- ham Post writes:—A movement is being started hore with the object of bringing for- ward again the much-debated question of conscription. The organisers think that the present time is particularly opportune, since '• the self-oonsciousneiss of the natlona," as they oeXP1 it, is now roused by election feeling. But they wish especially to emphasise the point that they are an abso- lutely dispassionate body, and do not seek in any way to influence voters by their argu- ments. At presetitthey are getting together a body of professional men—not necessarily public men—to assist in the movement, and to endeavour to get a census of the country's opinion on the matter. As regards their pro- gramme, they lay down no hard-and-fast rules, preferring that all details should be left to Parliament to settle; they advocate a modified form of conscription, not neceesarily on Continental lines.

LECTURES AT NEWPORT Professor Anwyl on Wednesday lectured in a most interesting manner at Newport Town- hall (under the auspices of the local Welsh Society, with Mr. J. H. Roberts, the president, in the chair) on "Wales in Roman Times." He dealt with the t-hree interesting historical features of the Roman occupation pertaining to Caerlleon ar Dyfrdwy (the Welsh Cheater), Oaerlleon or Wysk (Caerleon on Usk), and Uriconium, the modern Wroxeter in Shrop- shire. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the professor, on the motion of Kir Arthur Mack worth, Bart., seconded by Dr. Garrod Thomas, and supported by the Rev. Dewi Bevan Jones (Oaerleon) and Mr. A. Morris.

500 Teeth Per Week I CLAIM AGAINST A CARDIFF DENTIST A young widow, who gains her livelihood "?? Margaret Ann B,?,?l,-tt, of But&œrra'0e, Cardiff, brought an action at Cafgiff County-court to-day to recover damages from Tempfar MaIms, Queen-street. Mr. Ivor Bawen (instructed by Mr. Evan Davies) was for the plaintiff, and Mr. Gordon Williams defended. Mr. Bowen said the defendant was well- known as an extractor of teeth. Mrs. I Biartlett went to Mr. Malins's premises to have three teeth taken out, and was attended (by an assistant. After he had taken out two her mouth began to bleed profusely, and Dr. Dillon would tell his honour that the teeth were removed very unskillfully and negli- gently. Plaintiff was confined to her bed for three weeks. In cross-examination plaintiff said she claimed £10 for loss of wages. Plaintiff admitted that she had been doing housework wt ihome. Dr. Dillon spoke of the loss of blood sus- tained by plaintiff, and made a point of the difference between scientific and mechanical teeth extracting. Mr. Bowen: For instance, a bicycle con- structor might be a competent extractor of teeth if he were lucky?. Dr. Dillon: Yes. Plaintiff's fthr said that his daughter bled so much that she was "almost on the point of death." Mr. Malina, in the box, sa-id that he had been extracting teeth for 21 years, and on an a,vera,ge 500 teeth were extracted at hlfc Car- diff promises weekly. He bad absolute faith in the skill and care of the assistant who performed the operation. Judge Amphlett awarded the plaintiff £6 to pay her doctor's bill and C5 damages.

At Bow-street on Wednesday Charles Naish (41), a solicitor, lately practising in Norfolk-street, Strand, was committed for trial on a charge of fraudulently converting money belonging to clients. The evidence showed that the prisoner had had betting transactions. The prisoner was adjudicated a. bankrupt la?t October, his liabilities reaching over £ 25,000. UNKNOWN MAN I ATTACKS MR. JOHN BURNS I As Mr. John Bums was leaving the Town- hall at Wednesbury laet night he was attacked by an unknown man. The right hon .gentleman was entering a motor-car, and the man gripped him and shook him and pailled him about the car until the police arrived on the scene and interfered. Mr. Burns was 'uninjured in the scsBla. The man aseaved. A Denial A Press Association's Wednesbury oorre- spondent telegraphs that the report that Mr. John Bur?g was attacked Lb? Wcdi?s- bury last night is described by superillt-:l-I dent Salt as inaccurate. What actually occurred was that an admirer, while shaking hard's with Mr. Burns, enthusiastically hung on longer than was rolite. The man was a rolicti pensioner, and the incident occurred in the presemce of the superintendent and several constables, who all deny anything in the na-iture of an assault-

I Cardiff Sessions I RECORDER AND THE NEW OATH The Epiphany Quarter Sessions for the city of Cardiff commenced to-day at the Law Courts (before Mr. B. Francis-Williams, recorder). The Lord Mayor (Mr. John Qhappell) was foreman of the grand jury. ,In his charge the learned Recorder said the number of prisoners against whom bills would be presented was 32. There were in all 41 names, but of these nine were not to be tried, but had been sent there to be dealt with. None of the cases called for any com- ment. There were 24 cases of larceny, three of wounding, two of embezzlement, and three of breaking and entering into premises. What he had to say, he remarked, would take much less time than had been taken in administerlug the oath in the new form prescribed by the legislature. Haulier's 'Embezzlement Frederick John Reed (21), haulier, pleaded guilty to embezzling the sum of 14s. M. delivered to him on the account of his employer, Frank Douglas, coal dealer, on the 21st of October last. Prisoner was previously oon iot-ed at Swansea in April, 1907. He was now sentenced to twio months. I Proved an Alibi Patriek Regan (141, newsvendor, was charged with stealing a case containing jewellery from Clare Parsons, on the 27th of November. Mr Wilfred Lewis appeared for the prosecutrix, who is a young girl, liv- ing with her parents in ciM-e-placo. She said that on the day in question she was in Saunders-roud, which, is the approach to the Great Western Railway station, when pri- soner oame up and snatched the C3.3e. valued a.t L5 10s., and ran iu the direction of St. Mary-street. I Lost Their Balance PEOPLE CLING TO RAILINGS AND I LAMP-POSTS NEW YORK, Thursday. Owing to the thaw, followed by a rapid fall in the thermometer, the city of New York yesterday presented an extraordinary appear- ance, the (previously wet and slu-shy pave- ments and streets being suddenly converted into long vistas of ice, to traverse which required the greatest care, and which for horse traffic proved almost impassable. The scene presented 'last evening when people were leaving bTisinees was remarkable, and but for the dangerous element would have been ludicrous. Everywhere men and women ware to be seen making their way cautiously aJong the streets clinging to the railing's or to the friendly lamp-post, while others less fortunate were eliding about the pavements, many losing their balance and coming heavily to the ground. During the evening and last hours of the day no fewer than 200 persons were taken to the hospital muttering from injuries received by falls, whiie the number of those who re- ceived bruises and sprains, bat were able to reach home, can only be surmised. One man in lalling fractured his skull and died on the spot. The unfortunate horses had even a worse ex- perience, scores falling and breaking their legs and having to be killed. The motor-oars came off better, but the utmost caution had to be exercised in driving, and numerous accidents occurred. A large number of drivers withdrew their vehioles from the streets. At night, thousands of paople coming (is of eDniF,,g cut of the theatres and music-halls were marooned for hours owing to the lack of veuicles. I cc Universal Peace 51 1 AMERICAN GOVERNMENT'S PROPOSAL 7 According to the Washington correspon- dent of Mr. Hearst's newspapers (wires the New York correspondent of the "Dtaily Tele graph ), Mr. Knox, Cieoretary of State, took an important step over a month ago toward enlisting the sympathies of the leading nations of the globe for the realisation of "universal peace." Mr. Knox, so I am in- formed, has addressed a Circular Note to the Powers, suggesting an agreement to estab- lish what is called a "Court of Arbitral Jus- tte< with pow?r and functions sunicient to settle all cases arising in peace, as well ab those incident to war. Neither Mr. Knox noT the State Department ait Washington is so sanguine as to suppose tha.t the establishment of aucli a court will immediately secure universal peace," but that it would be in the direct line of the line of the civilising forces which are working together to herald the dawn of Peace in the world is the hope exp§est?ed by officials of the State Department. These officials-I quote now from the Washington correspondent of the "New York Ainerican"-saly they are confi- dent that favourable a-Dswers will be received from a, sufficien t number of the Powers addressed, and that neither Mr. Taft nor Mr. Kaox is sparing any effort to assure accept- anoo by the Powers. Americans are optimists, and they believe, as I have indicated in a previous dispatch, that there are special reasons why the United States should take the initiative and address to the Powers substantial proposals for "universal peace." It is claimed here in this connection that the Hague Conference adopted the American idea of an inter- nat-ional prize court, and before it was sub- mitted the United States had secured the adhesion of France. Germany, and England. It is proposed by the State Department at Washington in the Circular Note to the Powers to clothe that prize court with "the jurisdiction and functions of an International Court of Arbitral Justice." The language quoted is practically the same as that of the Note of the United States asking the Powers to aid in the formation of such a court.

George Preece, collier, Newbridge, was changed^ Abercarn to-day with gaming with cairds at Newbridge on August 24, 1907. and also on September 1, 1907. Defendant pleaded guilty, and he was fined 20s. for each offence. Mr. C. Clarke, Independent Lib.-Lab. candi- date for Shrewsbury, has withdrawn. The candidates now aire Mr. J. H. Military Honours & Masonic Rites j Never, possibly, in its whole history hae I Merthyr witnessed such an imposing funeral as that of the late Colonel D Rees Lewis, V.D., colonel commandant of the 5th Battalion Welsh Regiment, which took place on Wednesday afternoon. He was buried with military and public honours, and the tribute of respect paid to his memory will be for ever remembered in the annals of his native town. And it was not the people of Merthyr only who joined in signifying their desire to demonstrate their eense of his worthiness; from far and near came men who were anxious to show how great. was their appreciation of his noble character. No national hero oouid have had a more splendid funeral than the modest colonel, for th"" procession which accompanied his remains to the cemetery at Gefn was in itself considerably over a mile in length, and its progress from Plas Penydarren was watched by many thousands of persons, the whole line of route being densely packed; whilst every other point of 'vantage was utilised by those who did not care to occupy the streets. There wak a general suspension of business in the trading establishments during the time of the funeral, and in almost every private house the blinds were drawn. Before the cortege left the residence there was a short service in the house, conducted by the Rev. Daniel lewis, rector of Mer- thyr, and the body was afterwards carried out by the sergeants of the Merthyr Detach- ment of Territorials, and deposited upon a srun carriage brought from Cardiff, drawn by six horses, the team being in com- mand of Sergeant-major-instructor Sealy. Tho ooffin was covered with the Union Jack, upon which were placed the gallant officer's sword and helmet. It was of polished oat with massive brass/fittings, and on the plate, which was engraved by Mr. David Evans, was the following inscription: "Colonel David Rees Lewis, V.D., J.P., born 28th December, 1843; died 31st December, 1909." then a procession was formed, the chief marshal being Mr. J. A. Wilson, the chief- constable of the borough police, who was assisted by Mr. T. Elias, Mr. J. D. Parry, Mr. Washington Morgan, and Mr. T. Gunter. Three mounted members of the borough police rede at the head, and then came the firing party, consisting of about 95 officers and men of the Merthyr Detachment, in charge cf Captain D. C. Harris. The band of the 5th Battalion Welsh Regiment and the bani of the Breconshire Eegiment of Territorials followed, and on the way to the cemetery the former played Beethoven's I" Funeral March," and the latter alternately Chopin's March Funebre and the Daad March from Saul." The gun carriage came next, Colonel Banfield, Colonel M. Mor- g-au, Colonel J. J. David, Colonel Wilson. Surgeon-colonel Thompson, Major Phillips, Major Davies, Major Gittings, and Major Dyke actinT as pall-bearers. Behind strode the colonel's horse, with the jack boots slung reversed, the animal being led by Corporal Poles and Private James, the late colonel's orderly. Then ma.rched the officers and men of the 5th Battalion, under the command of Colone] A. P. James, and those of the Brecon- shire Regiment, under the command of Cap- tain Ruthven, there being present sevcjral officers and men of other regiments, the names including Major Gaskell. Major Prit- chard. Major Rram well Jones, and Captain E. Jones, In the absence of Captain Richards Lieutenant H. H. Southey fulfilled the duties of aNin adjutant. Succeeding the soldiers came first the borough police, about 60 strong, under the command of Chief-inspector Phillips, the other inspectors present being Inspectors Roberts and Lamb, and then the county police, over 80 in strength, commanded by Captain Lindsay, the chief-constable, Superin- I tendent Gill and Inspectors Xott, Canton. and Morris being also on parade. The borough amhulanc.e brigade and the Boy Scouts were along with the constabulary. The mourning carriages came after, and they were thus occupied:— First carriage: Mr. L. F. C. Lewis. Mr. W T. Fifth carriage: Mr. Parry de Winton Colonel Forrest, Mr. Salmon, and Mr W. S. Corbett. Sixth carriage- Sir Marchant Williams, Colonel J. J. Jones, and Mr. Sutcliffe. Scene at the Cemetery A tremendous crowd of people gathered at the cemetery to await the procession, and upon arrival at the chapel the coffin was taken off the gun-carriage, put on a bier, and carried into the little sanctuary, where the first portion of the Burial Service was con- ducted by the Rector of Merthyr, the Rev. D. Jones, and the Rev. C. A. H. Green, the hymn, Saints of God, their conflict past," being sung, led by the St. David's Church Chpir, under Mr. Percy Birmingham. At the grave- side, to which the body was shoulder-borne. the same rev. gentlemen officiated, and alter the hymn, Now the labourer's task ie o'er." had been sung, the firing party discharged three volleys, and the buglers sounded -The Last Post." The Masonic ritual, < .ducted by the Rev. Peter Williams, was subsequently carried out. darkness setting in .5 the final ritea concluded amid a most impreiïQve and affecting scene.

A FIERCE BLIZZARD I Fishing Boats Missing I FEARED LOSS OF 76 LIVES I HALIFAX (Nova Scotia), Wednesday. Seventeen fishing boats, with crews totalling 76, are missing from Canso, and it is feared all have perished. These vessels were caught in a fierce blizzard yesterday afternoon and blown off the shore. They spent the nig& at sea, with the temperature ten degrees below zero. Altogether 25 boats were blown off. bnt eight have been accounted for. It is regarded as impossible that any of the men on the others can have survived the rigours of la-st night's icy gale. The Government is sending steamships in search of the missing vessels. A North-westerly wind is blowing to-day. and snow is falling heavily.—Renter. Two Hundred Excursionists Wrecked Router's Agency has received communica- tion of the following telegram which has reached the High Commissioner for New Zea- land in London:— WELLINGTON, Wednesday. "The Union Steamship Company's steam- ship Waika-re, with NO excursionists and a crew of 70 on board, struck a rock in Dusky Sound yesterday and sank. All the passengers and crew were brought safely ashore. His Majesty's ship Pioneer proceeds at daybreak to the scene of the wreck to bring the passengers to Bluff Harbour. The Prime Ministar will accompany the Pioneer." HALIFAX (Nova Scotia), Thursday. Later reports state that 42 men belonging to the fishing fleet perished in the blizzard off Whitehead. The rest or the crews cf the 25 iishing boate are sale aiter terrible expe- riences. Brilliant feats of courage, endu- rance and nautical skill enabled the sur- vivors to esca.pe from the storm.

Split Amidships j FATE OF THE STEAMER SHANDON Fourteen, members of the crew of the Cardiff steamer Shandon (Messrs. W. J. Tatem. and Co.), which ran on the rocks near Heligoland whilst on a voyage from Odeesa to Bremen with barley, arrived at Cardiff to-day. The captain. J. E. Shotton, of Sunderland; S. Cottle, of Bristol, and two of the crew have remained at Heligoland to render assistance, ï.r ;).ÙJ{E.ssary, in the salvage operations. A fireman, seen at a Bute-Street boarding- house, t-aid-. "The Shaudon first struck a rock IS the neig-hbourhood of Heligoland on December 29 dusk was approaching. The sea was very rough, and the vessel, which afterwards ran on the sands, commenced to leak so rapidly that distress signals were hoisted land lights burned for assistance, in re.siJOii.se two lifeboats put out from Heligo- land. Preparations were then immediately made to leave the vessel, and the crew were taken off by the lifeboats without difficulty. | The "following morning the weather moderated sufficiently to allow them to return and col- lect their effects. The former said that his natural disappoint- ment was tempered by the fact that in the game there was little to choose on eithjr side. He was of opinion that the rout of the Englishmen yesterday was due to over-anxietv to obtain runs. The South Africans bnd plaved wonderfully well, and Vogler was ei-ii better to-day than yesterday, while the field- ing was magnificent. BURGLARY AT TREDEGAR David Edward Evans, collier, Tredegar, was sentenced to eighteen months' imprisonment at Monmouthshire Quarter Sessions on Wed- nesday for breaking into the counting-house of Wm- Evans at Tredeg-ar on November 4 and stealing £13 7s. 3d. Prisoner was found "Not guilty" on a oharge under the Preven- tion of Crimea Act of being a habitual criminal. John Owen Williams (40), labourer, Lang- etone, was sentenced to twelve months' im- prisonment with hard labour for neglecting" and exposing his children by tramping about the country with them.

It is hoped that by the end of the week a large number of men willresume work in Durham. Fifty thousand men are idle. In very few districts have three-shift pro- posals been accepted, and in a number, where work has been commenced under a two-h ift arrangement, there is great dissatisfaction. At Cambai-s, Throckley, and elsewhere new terms have been accepted "on trial," as it is phrased, and there is no guarantee that work will be continued- AGENTS' MIXED RECEPTION. The men's agents are visiting colliriee as rapidly as possible and endeavouring to arrange a settlement, bat a.re meeting with a. very mixez rocepti-oli and having little success. The agitation for a county ballot continues, and frequently resolutions are being passed asking" the agents to resign. Coal shipping, both abroad and coastwise, is cfompletely disorganised, and seither at Blyth nor on the Ty.n-e is much doing. A few coals are arriving at the staithes, but ship- ping is accumulating. At a mass meeting attended by 3,000 miners at Medomsley yesterday afternoon, it was decidaft to remain loyal to the ballot of the local lodges, and remain out on strike against the eight hours a.gr>oom and also to ask other collieries at present working to oeas-e until the dispute is satisfactory setiled. ÀI. amendment that the men resume work under protest for three months pending modification of the three shifts per day agreement was only supported by about fifty men. It was anrvcuneed tha.t the Langley Park Colliery had struck work, and it was agreed to appeal to the collieries unaffected for financial assistance until a set Lenient was effected. At a meeting of the men employed at the Joicsy Collieries, Northumberland, yester- day, it was unanimously determined to stand oot against the three-shift system, and to ask the whole of the other collieries in the county to come out and assist in abolishing it.

Mr. WiPiani Phillips, underground manager, said thoy had been paying certain allowances in 01 e of the districts owing to "roll" in the coal. UNKNOWN BODY IN CANAL. I The body of an unknown man, about 48 years of age, neatly dressed, of slight build, and about 5ft. 4in. in length, was found in the canal near the Jersey Dry Dock, Swansea, to-day. It was wedged against the lock gates, the head being above water.

TREDEGAR DISTRICT COUNCIL Mr. W. North presided. The precept of SI,647 made by the Western Valleys Sewerage Board was parsed for payment. The Gas ment?. 'Phe G as Manfasea* (Mr. D. W. Davies) reported that the gas supply practically failed on December 11.. 23, and 24. The sanction of the Dooal Govern- ment board to a loan for extensions and improvements to the works had not yet been received, and the clerk was instructed to write pointing out the danger to the work- men at the works and the ineonvenienoe to the public arising out of this delay. Instruc- tions were given to the surveyor to prepa,re plans and estimates of a proposed water supply to Park Hill, which i6 being developed by Lord Tnedegar. The supply will be for 259 new houses in addition to the existing ones.

SLIPPED ON ORANGE PEEL. Mr. W. L. Yorath held an inquest at Cardiff on Wednesday touching the death of Thomas Arnold, aged 27, a native of Mogeely, County Cork. Mrs. Georgina. Littley, of 7, Pearl-street, said the decased came to lodge with her on December 18. On the 23th he came downstairs with hi- face swollen, and eompla.inod of pains in the head. He also said he had fallen upon apiect- of orange-peel. Mrs. Mary Jane Best, of 39, Portmanmoor-road, said tha deceased had also lodged with her. She informed the parents of the death, but they wired. "Must be buried in Cardiff; sorry, we are too poor to do anything." Dr. E. II. price said the deceased was admitted to the work- house with symptoms of compression of tho brain. Death was due to meningitis, and sa the fall would have lowered the vitality of the brain tissues he was of the opinion that the fall was indirectly the cauee of detith. The verdict was "Meningitis, caused by a fall accidentally received."

HOTEL"TRAGEDY Three revolver shots -were heard in an hotel 1.'hree revolver s-hots 'Wre heard in an botej at Falmouth during Tuesday night, and on a se arch being made two bodies were found on the floor. They were those of a German named Kirschkron, formerly employed in the kitchen, and Mabel Burley. a waitress, and native of St. Austell, who had been keeping company. Each was shot through the head the presumption being the man murdered the girl and afterwards committed suicide. In the man's pocket-book was a note, stating the couple had decided to die together.

OUTRAGE ON VICAR BOUND & BEATEN SEQUEL TO A SENSATIONAL POLICE CASE Arising out of the extraordinary afisanlt on the Rev. Jt G. Dax, the vioax of Stain- more, Westmoreland, last September, a com- mission (appointed by the Bishop of Carlisle) to inquire into the scandal eat to-day at. Kirkby Stephen. The commissioners con- sisted of Mr. G. A. BAmington (Penrith), chairman of the Cumberland Quarter Ses- sions, who presided; Mr. Heywood Thompson, of Nunwdck Hall; Mr. John Xanson. Appleby; Qanon Shepherd, Appleby; and Canon Hall, Wreay. It will be TOfmembercd that on the evening of the 13th of September last a body of young men committed an assault on Mr. I-iax whilst he was in the company of Miss Mary Henison, the village schoolmistress and church organist. He wa.s bound and mal- treated. Proceedings were taken against the assail a lists, with the result that eight were subsequently fined £5 each by the locad magistrates. Mr. H. F. Mellor, K.C., and Mr. H. D. Craw- ford represented the Bishop of Carlible; Mr. Gordon Hewa.rt appeared for Mr. Lax. Mrs. Lax, the wife of the vicar, was also legally represented. Mr. Lax occupied a seat in court near to his counsel. Miss Bennison, a demure-docking and rather pretty girl o. 22. sat by the rev. gentleman until, with thl- other witnesses, she was directed to leave tee court. The Commiioner-s were authorised by t-ha bishop to make the inquiry, on the ground tha-t there existed scandal or evil report regarding Mr. Lax as having offended against the laws ecclesiastical, and as hating been guilty of conduct not becoming a clerk in Holy Orders. and tending to evil example and impurity of life. Private Inquiry Desired At the outset Mr. Hew art urged that. tne inquiry should be conducted in private owing to the actiofis pending of Miss Bennison against some of the men who assaulted Mr. Lax. Many of the facts, which would be brought out at the inquiry would be the same as in the action. So far, however, ad Mr. Lax himself was concerned, he courted inquiry. » The Chairman said the commissioner3 thought them waf no sufficient reason why the proceedings should be in private. THE CASE OPENED Mr. Mellor, in opening the case, sadd that for some considerable time past rumours of a very grave character affecting the con- duct of Mr. Lax with reference to Mary Ren- nison had beeu in circulation. Mr. Lax was a married man, who was not now living with his wife, and was between 40 and 45 years 01 a.ge. The farmers and others in the. district strongly objected t, the conduct of their vioar, and the result was that no one attended the Church services besides Mr. Lax. Miss Bennison, and, he thought, another woman. The inhabitants of the district also deoLned to send their children to the school with this talk about the schoolmistress and tht, clergyman, and the state of affairs became intolerable in the district. The out- come of it was that a body of the men in the district on September 13 comimdtted au assault upon Mr. Lax. Counsel went on to say that in March last Mr. Lax and the girl were seen together in such a position as would lead people to the ooncluson that they were courting. AN ANCIENT CUSTOM There was a special service at the Chapel Roy.al, St. James's Palace, to-day, at which representatives of the King attended and presented gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh in imitation of the wise men from the East, who presented similar gifts to the infant Saviour at Bethlehem. The olergy reoeived his Majesty's gifts, and when these had been handed over a general collection was made among the congregation The proceeds of this collection, together with the King's offerings of gold, will be distributed among the poor, while, frankincense and myrrh, according to ancient custom, became the property of the Dean of the Chapels Royal.

I M usic-hall- Sensation I MANAGER DECAMPS WITH DRAWINCS A remarkable fraud has been perpetrated at Edinborough. An elaborate entertain- ment was lavishly adver-tisei for the Albert Hall, the Zanzigs heading the bill. The man who took the hall posed as "from the Zawcigs." On the first night the hall was packed, but a telegram of apology was read from the stage, purporting to come from the Zanzigs, stating that owing to illness his company would not be able to appear this week- As the Zanzigs were the star turn free passes were distributed for a future date. The lessee was pressed for his rent, and to- day it was discovered he ha ddeciamped with the drawings. About a dozeu artistes are stranded. The Zanzigs are in America, and the coolness of the fraud is now realised. The show was boomed in advertising, none of which is paid.

I A COLLIER'S NEGLIGENCE At A be ream to-day William Treble, collier, Cwmcarn, was summoned for committing a brea-ch of the Mines Act by fadling to sprag his working place in the Abercarn Colliery on November 26. Wilfred F. Tullis stated that .whilst making an inspection of the Prince of Wales's Colliery, he found defen- dant's working place very improperly spragged, and it required posting as wel'. Sprags ought to be erected every six feet, but defendant had not put a eprag for twelve feet, and a quantity of coal was overhanging. When a.sked to put a sprag up he refused. Defendant pleaded guilty, and he waa fined 20s.

I A FRAUDULENT TRAVELLER William Jones, mason, Newport, was sum- moned at Abercarn to-day for travelling on the Great Western Railway between Netwport and Nantyglo on November 29 without having previously paid his fare and with intent to avoid payment. Mr. T. Baker Jones, New- port. prosecuted, and defendant pleaded guilty. Ticket-collector Weihb stated that defendant attempted to p¡u;.s off a ticket which was a week old, and on which the date haod been altered. A fine of 408. was imposed.

I JUDGE INSPECTS HOTEL The bearing was continued at Cardiff County-court to-day of the case in which Meesrs. Holt Brothers, brewers, of Ruraham, Somerset, sued Kcjjen George Oummings, of rnion-stroot, and Walter Hemininge, of Walker-road, Cardiff, as tiie executors under the will of the late Mr. Willi am Parker, of the Custom House Hotel, Cardiff, for £57 10s. 8d., damages for alleged breach of agree- ment to keep the hotel in tenant-able condi- tion. Mr. A. Parsons (instructed by Mr. A. F. HiH) was for the plaintiffs, and Mr. Lincoln Beed (instructed by Mr. J. B. Stephens) for the defendants. After visiting the hotel, Acting-Judge Amphlett found for the plain- tiffs for .£2a and costs. The sum of £15 had been paid into court.

l A charge of stealing two sacks, value Is., the property of the Ebbw Vale Company, from Abercarn con July 26 last, was preferred against Alfred WatkinsI collier, Cwmcarn, at Abercarn to-day. Defendant pleaded g'uilty, and wa4 fined 10s.

COLLIERY BLAST I SEVERAL MINERS BURNT I In the early hours of this morning an coal gas occurred at Berthllwyd Colliery, Benclawdd. One man—John WlUiams, of Bryn Row-was severely burnt about the arms and face. Several other miners were also injured by the fire. The colliery is owned by M r. D.Williams, Cefngolan Park. Mutiny on Warship ENTIRE CREW IMPRISONED ROME, Thursday. According to a telegram from Bari to the "Meæaggero," the crew of the warship Volta mutinded because they were refused leave. As a result 39 petty-officers have been degraded and eleven of them imprisoned, while all the man have been ordered a month's confine- ment.—Central News.

I A Fog at Sea LONDON STEAMER SUNK During the dense fog which prevails over the Humber the steamer Holm wood, of Lon- do.n, was sunik this, morn.ing off Orfordness, ne,a.r Aldeburgh, during a collision with the steamer Aberdonian, of London. The crew of the vessel were saved. At Hull during the fo.g a collision took place between the steamer Bell of Usk and the sloop Providence, of Ferriby Sluicc, which was at anchor, and the skipper's son, Frank Burkill, was drowned.

Married 60 Years BUSY LIFE OF CLERCYMAN AND WIFE Not often does a diamond wedding anniver- sary fiild a couple with so firm a grip on life's pleasures and activities as the Rev. Charles and Mrs. Holland, of Shottermill, Surrey, possess. Mr. Holland, who is aged 93, was for nearly 40 years rector of Petworth, Sussex, and is a former prebendary of Chichester Cathedral. Mrs. Holland is 83 years of age. It was on New Year's Day 1850 that Mr. Holland, then rector of St. Stephen's, Ipswich, married Miss Emily Tori esse, daughter of the Bcv. C. M. Torlessa; and yesterday congratulatory messages were still reaching The Watchers." their picturesque old house near Haslemere, whose name is a survival of the old smuggling days. The old clergyman, who has had nine children and 39 grandchildren, besides a host of friends in many parishes made during his 70 years in Holy Orders, always attends to his voluminous correspondence himself. When he found with increasing years that writing became laborious he learned type- writing, and now clicks off his letters with ease on the keyboard.
