1-"[ALL BIGHTS RESERVED.]…
1-" [ALL BIGHTS RESERVED.] A NOBLE SACRIFICE. By DUANE C. STARKWEATHER. "Sergeant," said Major Swayne, of the -th United States Infantry, a scout has just come in and reports that the Indians have broken loose, murdering and pillaging. My wife and children are at Stoughton's ranch. I want you to take four men and bring them in." ril get them in, sir." Sergeant Kimball saluted and left the room. The maJor controlled himself Till the man was gone, then paced the floor in agony. Kimball was one of those men occasionally to be found in the racks of the army who are understood to be gentlemen, but about whom nothing is known prior to their enlistment. He had shown himself careless of danger; henee the major's selection of him for the task. That afternoon the sergeant and his four men rode into Stoughton's ranch, and Kim. ball told Mrs. Swayne that her husband desired her to return to the fort, though his object in sending for her was concealed. A wagon and horses were taken from the barn, and the family placed in it, and, attended by the escort, the journey was begun. One soldier rode ahead, one on each side of the wagon and one directly behind. A mile in the rear rode Sergeant Kimba.LL. Half of the journey had been accomplished when the sergeant., standing at the summit of a pass between two hills and looking backward, saw Indians emerging from a wood and making for the road. There were more than a hundred of them, and he could see by their gaudy trappings that they were on the warpath. He watched them till they struck the Mad. and when they turned in his direction he knew that they would soon overtake the wagon. The colour died out of his face, but a desperate resolve settled there instead. Casting about for loose timber, be made a pretence for a barricade across the road. Then, lying on his stomach, with his Winchester pointed across a log, he waited the coming of the Indians. This man who was about to die that others might live was in a strange condition of mind. He remembered one who, born of the same mother, had fallen under temptation, one whose punishment he had taken upon himself. He re-called having been dropped by his friends, the contemp- tuous, averted look of the girl he loved. These were in his thoughts confused with sounds of the tramp of ponies, the guttural mutterings of Indians coming up the road and the creak of the wagon lumbering toward the fort borne back on the wind. They'll hear the firing," he said to him. self, "and move on at full speed. Better give the signal now and save time." SELECTING one of the Indians, he fired, emptying a saddle. The savages halted, ceased their jargon, and looked up the road whence the shot had come. Kimball fire-d three more shots in rapid succession, drop- ping a man each time. Then the Indians ^OOK to cover. Again the wind brought back the sound of the creaking wagon, this time noisier and accompanied by the gallop of horses. Kim- ball knew that every moment he could delay the inevitable advance of the Indians over his body would add to the chanoes for the lives of the women and children. The Indians below were quiet. The ser- geant was familiar with their tactics, and knew they were stealing upon him and around him. Presently there was a shot from his left. A bullet sang by his ears; then all was still again. But what a still- ness! Insects were humming; birds wee on the wing, occasionally pouring forth har- monious notes, then a far, faint creaking of the wagon, now doubtless nearing the fort. As sure as the sun shone mildly on that autumn afternoon, as sure as the leaves rustled in the breeze, death was creeping up on the man who was waiting for it. Kimball knew the Indians were puzzled. They could not get into a position where they could see behind his little fortification, for he was screened by trees on both FLANKS^ He saw an Indian creeping out on the limb of a tree close to his right. His rifle cracked, and the man pitched headlong to the ground. Meanwhile there was another sound I coming from the rear, the gallop of horses. Kimban knew that he had saved his charge and that in time succour would come, but he also knew that when it arrived all would be over with him. Since hills lay between the Indiana and the coming horsemen the former did not hear for a time, and the soldiers were enabled to come within a short distance before they were discovered. Then the redskins, knowing that relief was at hand, poured a fire from a hundred rifles into Kimball's little fortress, and mounting their horses, galloped away. Major Swayne, followed by his men, coming like the wind, spurred his horse to the crest of the hill where the sergeant had made his defence. There lay Kimball, still alive, but bleeding from many wounds. The major dismounted, and bent over him to thank him for the lives of his wife and children, but words would not come. The sergeant saw tears streaming from his com- mander's eyes and knew what he would say. Major," he whispered, "when you are again transferred to the east, find Margaret Miller. Tell her that John took upon him- self Frank's sin. She will understand." When they had lain him away in the burial ground near the fort, the music, as in the return from all military funerals, was gay, but on every heart it felt like a I wail.
- - - "I WILL BE THERE."
"I WILL BE THERE." By KENELM Y. SP0TTISW0DE. I had always been possessed as a boy with a burning desire to visit the uninhabited regions of the west, and after beiag graduated in medicine resolved to spend a summer in that way before settling down to practice. I went to Denver, where I found a party organising to visit the Colorado. I was invited to join and was soon on the way, greatly exhilarated at the prospect before me. When we reached the extreme limit of what was then inhabited country, a man in sombrero and buckskin came into camp one evening and asked if we carried a medicine chest. His little daughter, ten years of age, was ill, and he wanted something to give her, though he didn't seem to know what. When I told him that I was a physician and offered to visit the child, the man looked at me with an expression of relief and gratitude that I shall never forget. He led me to his cabin, a short distance from the camp, and there I found a bad case of typhoid fever. What was needed most were weeks of care- ful nursing, but there was no one at hand with experience sufficient to nnrse intelli- gently. The nearest neighbour was twenty miles away and if reached would not likely be available. I knew that the only chance for the child's lite VM for me to-remain with her until she had passed the crisis. To do this I must abandon my trip to the Colorado, for it was out of the question for me to think of following the party through the wilderness. I laid out some drugs, with directions for their use, and told the father and mother what was required. I was young: in the profession, and the appealing look they both gave me broke down my intention to leave them. I saw my party move on without me the next morning, remained with the child till she was on the way to recovery, then returned to the east. Before leaving the 1\ father—John Granger was his name—took my hand and, looking at me with strange dreamy eyes, said to me: Stranger, if you ever need help to save your life, J will be .there." I It was twelve years before I got ten T>PRWR« tunity to make another attempt to visit the far west. This time I struck farther south and, having my own attendants, began a tour through the south-western territories. It was the middle of August and very hot. We started one morning to cross a belt of country on which there was not a drop of water. I attempted to hire a couple of mules in order to carry an extra supply, but failed, and we were obliged to start with but two kegs, one slung on each side of a pack horse. The supply was a-plenty if we got through on time. We had gone but a short distance when our guide was taken sick and insisted on returning. One of the men of the party declared that he knew the way perfectly and would pilot us through. I told him to go ahead. All day we rode over desert plains on which there was neither tree nor shrub, not a thing to break for a moment the heat of thd sun. In the afternoon I notioed our volunteer guide looking about him, evidently for landmarks, and with a troubled expres- sion. "Shall we get water in time for supper?" I asked him. I "Oh, yes, in time for supper, sure." The sun hung, a great round ball of red fire, on the horizon, and there were no signs of timber. The day faded into dusk, and there was naught about us or before us save a deso- late plain. The black night came on. W. were lost! The sun rose round and red, forewarning 118 of a burning day. At noon we drank the last drop of water we possessed. When the fiery ball sank a-gain in the west, we had begun to suffer the paegs of thirst. Another day, and. our course was marked by tho bodies of men and animals We left them, still pushing on, still straining our eyes for a distant view of timber. That night I lay apart from the rest think- ing of the home that I did not hope to see again, my wife, my children. The saddest thought was what would be their grief if they knew that within a few hours I should die in the agonies of thirst. Then I heard a low voice: "Doctor, I am here." I arose, and through the gloom saw a maat in sombrero and buckskin beckoning me. I could not distinguish his features, but I knew it was John Granger. Wakening my com- panions, I directed them to fellow me. I did not tell them that before me was a guide, either in the flesh or in the spirit, who bad once said to mo, "Stranger, if you evar need help to save your life, I will be there." .^or hours I kept my eyes on the figure before me. Now and again some meaaiber ot the party must pause for rest. Then I lost sight of our guide. When we moved on, there he was, a shadowy form, barely distinct enough for me to distinguish him from the surrounding gloom. At last I turned my bead to look for a sign of day. When I looked again before me the figure had vanished. Lowering my eyes to my feet, there wae4L spring of water! I have spent years trying to discover if John Granger was at the time alive or dea4 without avail. I submitted the case to medical society of which I am a member, and it was unanimously decided that I was delirious and fpllowed an illusion, happening to come upon the spring. I have never been able to bring myself to their opinion.
A PRIVILEGED CLASS.
A PRIVILEGED CLASS. Yes, sir, if you wants justice, the real thing, full weight an' solid all through, it's British justice you want, an' you see thet you git it, an' tek no other," said Sergeant Gandy. You'll hear some folks say thers one lor fer the rich an' one fer the poor; but don't you believe it. You know, McCesh, better's I do, 'mos likely, there's British justice f'r all on 'em, an' more'n enough to go round, a.n' every man, big an' little, gits the same value for his money. The trouble is they ain't all got the money, an' when they haven't they can't hev no JUSTICE unless they're crim'nals. "Crim'nals is the on'y privileged class which gits British justice for nothin'. If a man owes you a debt, or swindles you out of a. property,, an' yer anxiouis to hev British justice out off him, you've got to pay for it. That's fair. You. can't expect to hev as much as you want of th' best thing of the kind that's on the market without payin' for it. It's a good article, an' like all good things, it's expen- sive, an' if you're too poor to pay for it, don't go grumblin' as if your poverty affected the value of British justice—save up yer spare cash like a reasonable man till yer can AFFORD to buy some. NNIU crim'nals it's different. They dcmt want British justice, so yer can't fairly ask 'em to pay for it. They'd sooner gp without. But the lor says, You got to hev it,' ses the lor; 'tain't as if you wos 'poor but honest. then, in common fairness, I couldn't allow you to hev more'n you could buy; but, see in' you're a worthless ruffiun, I'm goin* to give you as much as is good for yer, free of charge.' So the crim'Hal gets his share for nothin', an' it's as good quality, too, as the innercent man carries off when he's paid full price for it, an' no discount."
AN INVALUABLE PIN.
AN INVALUABLE PIN. Johnny Samkins," said the school teacher, impatiently, what is it you are fidgeting with ?" Johnny did not reply, but the class sneak was ready, as usual, with information. "Please, teacher," he said, "it's a pin he's got." Take it away from him, and bring it here," was the next command. And the offending pin was accordingly brought. There was no more trouble from Johnny until his turn came to read, and then, instead of standing up, the poor little fellow made no sign, except that two big tears rolled down his cheeks. "Why don't you go on with the reading?" cried his much-tried mentor. If you don't behave better, young man, I shall have to make an example of you!" P-please, mum," whimpered Johnny, I— I can't stand up! That pin you took ke-keeps me trousers up
