IN Tli-IE DISTRICTS, AMMAN VALLEY. It is estimated that there are about fifteen musical works under rehearsal in the Ammur Valley at present. They range in class from simple juvenile can- tatas to oratorios. There are basidot, about six miscellaneous concerts in course of preparation. The mortal remains of IrA. J. Jones, M.A. (vioar), performed the ceremony, which was followed by a re- ception at the bride's home. The honey- moon is being spent in London. > AMMANFORD. I The provisions of the Local Government Board housing scheme, and the reasons which have weighed with the Urban Council in not applying the scheme locally, were succinctly stated to a rate- payers' meeting at the Y.M.C.A. Hall on Thursday night by the council's clerk (Mr. T. M. Evans, M.A.), who made free use of the blackboard for demonstrating rome of his arithmetical calculations. Mr. J. E. Jones, the chairman of the Council, presided. The opinion was pretty freely expressed that the scheme, tiS at present constituted, would confer few benefits locally, and would undoubt- edly impose upon the town a heavy burden in rates. The report and balance-sheet of the Ammanford Co-operative Society for the term of 26 weeks ended December 4th last show an increase in sales of S:1,133 17s. over the previous half-year, and an average weekly increase of Y.127, over the corresponding period last year.' The share capital has increased by 21,807, and the Penny Bank by £140. The reserve fund stands at £1,718, an increase of £79. The net savings amount to £ 3,920 lGe. Gomer Evans (Field-street), Bombardier Gwilym Evans (Tirydail-lane), Pte. Idns Peregrine, and Pte. Charles Marshall, the latter coming from the Salonika front. I An interesting and instructive lecture was delivered at the Presbyterian Chapel on Thursday evening by the Rev. Thomas Williams (minister), on the subject With the Welsh at Aldershot" The chair was occupied by Mr. Daniel J. Rees. A collection was taken on behalf of the iund to provide comforts for the We! !i troops at Aklershot, among whom Mr. Williams has laboured during the pas', month. BURRYPORT, I On Tuesday, the operetta, The little old woman that lived in a shoe," -was Giveii at the Parish Ball, Burryport, by scholars of St. Mary's Sunday School, trained by the Misses Bevan and the Rev. —. Richards (curate). The chair was token by Mr. John Walters. The pro- ceeds were for local war funds. Mr. J. Lewis, Inter. B.Sc., chemistry teacher at the Llanelly Higher Grade School, gave a most entertaining lecture and demonstration to the members of the English Congregational Guild, Burryport, the subject being: The Air We JBreathe" On Saturday afternoon, at the Neptune Hotel, Burryport. Mr. W. Evans offered for sale a quantity of antique ware, the property of the late Mr. U. E Bowen, J. P., of Rumsey House. Kidwelly. Bid- ding was very brisk, and good prices were I realised. Lieut. Ivor Rees, the second eon of the tlev. J. H. Rees, preached at Zion Chapel on Sunday evening. Lieut. Rees was badly wounded in France, and was a prisoner of war in Germany for many months. He still has to tisil two crutches to walk. At the English Congregational Church. Abercynon, last week, Mr. W. T. Roberts, I A.R.C.O., gave a recital in aid of tit? Soldiers' and Sailors' Fund of the church. Mr. Roberts is a native of Burryport. Hi? mother and sister are living there at present. CADOXTON. (Penygrocs); cornetist, Mr. Haydn Wil- liams (Penygroes); elocutionist, Mr. Tom Thomas (Cross Hands). The accompanist was Mr. Tom James. Selections were uven by the band. I CWMAVON. I The death is reported of Captain J. Allon Nicholas, R.F.A., the elder son of Mr. and the lale Mrs. Rhys Nicholas, Cwmavon. While on his way home after three years' service in the East, he died at No. 1 Rest Camp Hospital, Che.Ixmrg. of pneumonia. He was buried at the military cemetery, in the presence of his father. Capt. Nicholas joined the Colours immediately on the outbreak of war. Capt. Nicholas was educated at Christ Hospital and the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, where he graduated. When war broke out lie was on the staff of Crediton Grammar School. Much interest is taken in the prospec- tive election of a county councillor for Cwmavon in plam of Mr. Percy Jacob, who does not intend seeking rf'kctíon. The Labour Party claim the seat, and the name of Mr. John Jones Edwards is mentioned as their candidate. After! considerable pressure we understand that Mr. John Banbury has consented to run as a Coalition candidate. Mr. Han- bury is known throughout the district as a powerful speaker, and is probably the moct cultured man in the parish. He has proved himself a sterling fighter for the'Liberal and Coalition cause for many I' years. He is employed at the Tinplate Works, Cwmavon. DUNVANT. On Thursday evening, &t Ebener.er Chapel, a performance of the drarua, "The Great Experiment," was given. Mr. D. E. Williams, M.A., Gowerton. presided. Mr. Alf John, Brynaeron, Dunvant, has been successful in passing the Home Office examination and receiving his second class manager's certificate. He also passed first class in surveying under the London City and Guilds, and also first class in mining under the Glamorgan County Council. Mr, John. who is A miner, is employed at the Killan Colliery. FPORESTFACH. Mr. A. Harding presided. Mrs. Arthur Stone, May field, Gorseinon, has received a notification that her hus- band. Gunner A. Stone, R.F.A., has been accidentally wounded in th-e thic-h. Giin- ner Stone has been nearly three and a half years in France, and got off un- scathed. He is now in a military hospital at Glasgow. Gunner Gilbert Sluman. R.F.A. re turned home on Saturday night fron Palestine, where he has been during the whole of the campaign. He was one ol several in his battery who volunteered in France for Egypt. Gunner Sluman, in pre-war days, was a teacher at the Boys' School. Gorseinon Sergt. W. D. John, 27450, King's Shrop- shire Light Infantry, son of Mr. Jonah John, Kingsbridge, Gorseinon, at first re- ported killed, afterwards a prisoner in Germany, reached his home in Liverpool January 14th. lie died of pneumonia on Sunday, the 26th, in the presence of his wife and hie father and sister. The show was a one. with over 400 entries. Mr, Edwards' birds were very much admired by a large gathering of fanciers. MUMBLES, I The mortal remains of the late Mr. Ernest Withell, of 5. Promenado-tcrrace, Mumbles, were laid to rest at the local cemetery on Monday afternoon. Deceased passed away at the Swansea Hospital on Wednesday of last week. Much sympathy is extended to the widow in her bereave- ment. A concert was held at the Paraclete Hall, Mumbles, by the Society Variety Entertainers, in aid of the local Sailors' and Soldiers' Fund. The programme was arranged by Mr. Cecil Elias. and the fol- lowing artistes took part: Miss Nellie Pressor, Madame Lilian Edwards, Miss Ireno Groen, Mr. E. S. Evans, Mr. Glen I Prosser, and Mias F. Winter. MORRISTON. I The Horeb Schoolroom was packed on Tuesday evening, when another of a series of weekly concerts was held in aid of the Soldiers. and Sailors' Fund. The Rev. Wm. Williams ably accom- panied. NEATH ABBEY. I Up to the present it has been found impossible to ascertain the whereabouts of Pte. H. E. Hares, 9th Battalion R.W.F. A letter has just been received from the Red Cross Society stating that in September last he was in a .London hopial. since when he cannot be traced. It was in March 1918, that he first pro- ceeded to France. His sister-in-law. Mrs. W. Smith, Cromwell-terrace, Neaiili Abbey, would be grateful for any infor- mation concerning him. NEATH. The remains of the late Mrs. Phillips, wife of Mr. John Phillips, Gwacwm Farm, were laid to rest at the old Parish Church graveyard, Pembrey, on Tuesday after- noon. The chief mourners were Mr. J. Phillips (husband), and Mr. and Mrs. John Nicholson (daughter and son-in- law). The curate of Pembrey, the Rev. J. Williams, officiated. The many friends of the v. D. A. Jenkins, M.A., vicar of Pcmbr^y. will be glad to .Iearyi that he is now almost quite well after his recent serious illness. On Sunday morning an interchange of pulpits took place between the Rev. J. H. Rees and the Rev. Glyndwr Ricliarda, B.A.. B.D.. when the Rev. J. H. Rees preached in English at the English Con- gregational Church and the Rev. Glyn- dwr Richards in Welsh at Zion. Pte. Oliver Jones, Burryport, who has been a prisoner of war in Germany, came home last week. He had not seen his little daughter, aged two. The large number of men who have been released from the Army and Navy, and have come home to Pcmbrey and Burryport. and also the released prisoners of war, will be given a reception in a few daye. Thomas held an inquest at Taibach on Wednesday on James Summeral (50), Mill-row, Taibach. who died on Saturday. Evidenoe was given that while at work as engine driver at Vivian's Copper Works on the previous Sunday he was repairing a valve, when a bar he was using struck him on the car. He complained of the blow, but kept working till Thursday. Dr. J. H. Davies ■said death was due to coma, the result of the blow. Verdict: Accidental death. TALLEY. The funeral of the late Mr. Thomas Rees. J.P., Glanyrafonddu, well-known as a member of the Llandilo Board of Guar- dians for 45 years, and as a large and highly-respected farmer and stock breeder, took place at Taley Church. The funeral was private, the mourners being Sergt.-major Osward Rees (son), Coun- cillor Blagdon Richards, J.P., and Mr. Morgan (sons-in-law), and Mr. T. Mor- gan (grandson).
