I SWANSEA'S YOUNG HOPES
I SWANSEA'S YOUNG HOPES Physical Exercise for Naval j Brigade. A Imrre number of boys pf the Naval Bri- ] gade took part in various health-giving drills on Wednesday evening, at the old Swansea Castle headciuarters. Single-stick exerei-sa was aliro included in the programme 0'1 that ooctteion, asi it is an excellent meau-s for strengthening the fttcul6" It iB Ecldom found that those who have fcahen part in this practice laek the gift of ob- servation. and this training, therefore, be- comels, apart from the sport—of real value to them in after-lift The pretty movementc in company drill, too. must not be forsrot- ten. its without skill and prouer attention to discipline, it would be impossible to ciirry out the manceuvres successfully. IN THE GYM. When drill was over. Chief Instructor r Ashbury pave the boys half-an-hour in the I gymnasium. where appliances for sport ana physical cultnre afford endless delight The M'cret of the Naval Brigade training lies in the fact that every muscle in the bodv is given an equal chance to do its share of work, and when tiiev are kept in order Ln this manner they act as a lire-place for the I nerves to prevent them from losing their power. MENTAL CULTURE. The minds of youths ream for a wider outlook for they are 'conscious that they possess hidden talents, which they yre t anxious to develop in order to enter int^ tha work! of achievement. It M then tha book help to ripen the character by Î'n- (?ftttinK ideas for thinkh'K and doing while the rest of youth is there. For the loom of I destiny is hourly weaving the threads of hum?n character into a beautiful fabric, (md it depends entirely on the training ib? mind receives whether our portion is per- fected or spoiled by unskilful Snsers. VALUE OF B00K8. The boys of tha ?wan?a. Naval Brigade h?YL era sped the fact that books can be used in the same way as a bunch of keys, to open door", that hide the wonders of the world from onr eyes. So that even if cir- cumstances compel some to lire amid dis- mal surroundings, their thoughts are un- fettered and tboy can learn by readme how to rise to Ligher things. For theiv is always 90mething to learn from every book. whether it be action or fact. COMMODORE'S KEfi-T CURE." The Commodore (Lieut. John Hodgens O.B.E.) I am told, has greatly benefited by the rest and cbanpe of air in Cardiganshire, which the bovs of the Swansea Naval J gad a will, no doubt, remember was the home of the famous Welfih explorers. All the companies are doing exceptionally wdl. fi ud have been for some considerable timet past, both in drill and sporty but it i;: particularly gratifying to observe the re- markabie progress being malIc by what iriirht he termed the "baby companies"— those that have been formed within the past two years or fK), The C.L.B. training, a* given in th<<organisation's official drill book, covers numerous subject*, and-before cadets can acquire even a fair knowledge of all branches of work a deal of time must be devoted to hard training. CAMP RECOLLECTIONS. The last divisional caml) held was that 01 t 1914. the Swansea Battalion being under canrafi wh,M war was declared. The camp was marred by a very large number of ofil- •cer*, warrant officers, and N.C.O.'b (ex- ^rniy men 'an.i Territorial*) being called n-.). On the battalion's return to Swansea, tho recruiting office was raided hy O.L B.- eager to do tfitir bit. and m:i,ny of them nave, alav fallen while carrying out this aesite. They have- surely fitood by the motto of the C.L.B. which they knew so veil, and have "fought the good fight." The divisional camp« held on a larue scale were after careful consideration susoended in 1915 until after the war. C.L.B.-ites are eagerly looking forward to -the happy days to come— soon, let us hope— when Bank- Holiday W,tJ!{ and the week previous wiU again be times of excitement—ajid of happi- ness. ST.
