STAGE AND STALLS 01 Next Week's Programtras at Local Halls. I' A iiitrfit of life and laughter he en- joyed at the Grand Theatre ou ilonday next, when OIL I 1 Say!" described as the greatest of all laughter-makers, makes its welcome re-appcarance in Swansea, on a six nights' visit, and a special matinee at 2.30 on Saturday. The present company in- cludes Miss Gliulys Archbutt. who "starred" in the powerful character of "Sidoiiie" during 1915, in nearly all the principal pro- vineal theatres, and Air. A. i]. Story, a CLever comedian, who has only recently re- turned to the stage after seivinp in Prance for years. Mr. Story joined his Majesty's Forces on November 3rd, 1914 and retires with the rank of lieutenant. The other artistes of note include the Misses Dorothy Hudson. Irene Verona., Carmen Strong. Rosa, Thornbury and Fay Hivitig- ton, and Messrs. Otto Minstre. F. D. Fraser. W. Tozer and Fred Knight. 'Oh! I Say'" possesses a good story, and is peopled with intereetmsr characters, each one of whom is distinctly interwoven with the series of amusing complications which arise from a simple uninvited predicament. A good laugh 18 worth much in these nerve-wrack- HIET tim?. and ? Oh! I S?y!" is oyernow- ing with laughter, it is well worth recom- mending as a war-time tonic." Due at the Empire jiext week is" The Better Ole. or L", sub-title has it. iraiments from France.' which is nothirc leas than Captain Bruce BairasTather's pic- torial characters brought to life. The men and women he shows us in this inimitable play are thoso he actually met "out there J Old Bill and Alf and Bert arc men lie knew: in fact we know tham too—the li!"ht- hearted British Tommy of the Old Army and the New; the chaps who take the most senouo situations in the erreat tragedy that is being enacted a; a ioke but with a sen- timental recard for those who 're left be. hind. In the midht. of all the (medy there crops up now and aprain a touch of serious- ness that brinsra to light the determineo purpose of these men. Before Old Till goes over the ton" to the accompaniment of machine guns h., hands his pal a packet of his wifes letters to be delivered to her versonally should anything befall him on his dangerous mission. The pathos of thp old soldier makes one's eyes grow moi<t. and then he is writins to his wife. He a-ked her to thank the parson's t.ister for the pocks she sent out and tell her h;* is wearing one of them as a Balaclava. hel met. and is carrying hi? charere of clothes in the other. The nlav is full of evervdav comedy and everyday nathos. Tt will be played twice n izh t 1. at 6.30 and 8 40. At the Picture House on Monday next, iitip-m Uerinoud and Enid Mackay appear if a teiiic and vivid Triangle drama. "Blood WiJI Tell," a tine story of a boy after being expelled from college, ajid disinherited by hig father. made good The second star is Th? Intrigue." a fascinat- ing story of love and adventure, featuring Lenore Ulrich. The- second episode of "The Fighting Trail," the story of Ybarra, "An lee Man's Bride," the Triangle Keystone, featuring Eddie Gvibbons, with "Pathe's Animated Gazette and Weekly News." com- plete the programme. For the week-end For All Eternity." founded on the grand old English song will he shown. The pro- duction reflects the greatest credit on Mr. Davidson and his producers. Beautiful set- tings of English gcenerjr are reproduced, and the setting of the trial scene in the Old Bailey is a triumph of realistic stage management. Mary Miles Minter also ap- pears in "The Gentle Intruder;" J'immy Dale," No. 9, "lathe's Animated Gazette." and a Paramount Travel" will also be screened. A five-part sKxua- photo-drama, entitled "An Ancient Evil" will be shown at the Castle Cinema. Monday next, and duriug the week. It is a companion picture to "Where Are My Children?" and'has been approved of by the National Council oi Public Morals for presentation to adults only. This pitiful and touching play is I built on James Adams' book entitled "A ?cw Conscience" and "An Ancient Evil." The film is not to be regarded as a chance incident pictured to pa?s awav an idle hour. It is typical of the lives of thou sands, < ad the story of the film is ad- drested to those who lead the sheltered lives. Other pictures for Monday. Tuesday, and Wednesday are "The Isle of Life," a I five-part drama, and two-part Keystone comedy, "An Ice Man's Bride. All pic- tures. with the exception of "An Ancient Evil will be changed on Thrusday. when Dorothy Gish will be featured in a five- part Triangle drama. "Her official Fathers.' At the Carl to A Cinema, on Monday, Tues- day, and Wednesday, Julian Eltinge the popular feminine impersonator, appears in his first picture. The Couutess Charmill" Mr Eltinge is seea as a bewitching and beau, tifully-gowned foreign countess, who lures mens watches, scarf pine, and wallets into her fair ringed hands for no less a purpose than the Red Cross Fund. The picture abounds with humour of the best sort, and has unexpected situations and a scream- ingly funny plot. The second star is it's Never Too Late to Mend." from the famous novel by Charies Reade. featuring George Lev ton as Tom Robinson. A Winning JjOseT is a comedy which. with Patlie's Animated Gazette and Weekly News" in pictures complete the programme. For the week-end, W. S. Hart appears in the great- est Hart-Triangle drama. Wolf Lowry," yet produced. W. S Hart who takes the part of Wolf Lowry. lyerforms precisely the act that such a, strong, forceful character would do in real life. The scenes chosen as the back:?rounds of the play are rich in natural beauty. The second otar is "The Son of-the Immortals." featuring If War- ren Kerricran ii a Blue Bird master pro-i duction. "The F.,t,al Ring." No, 11, "Jerry's Brilliant Scheme," and Mr. and Mrs Sidney i Drew in II: "Tootsie," complete the pro-I gramme. On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday next. at the Royal Theatre, the star picture will be "The Bait." a virile drama of life in the trappers' country, featuring William Clifford and Betty Hart supported by a strong cast of artistes. "The Queen of Dia- monds is sufficiently original and exciting to please the most exacting taste in sensa- tions. and its story can easily be followed by all: Floret's Enchantment," a three- red Vitagraph drama: episode three ot "The Lass of the Lumberland," two reels: Jerry's Brilliant Scheme." comedy: and Patlie's Gazette." For the latter end of the wellc the ever-popular little screen ac- tre-F,, Zoe Rap," in a five-reel drama. The Little Pirate," supported by an all-star cast: second feature "Ttose of the Alley," featuring Miss Jackie Saunders, three reels; 13th episode of "The Neglected Wife," two reels: "Deep Sea and Desperate Deeds." a comediy in two reels, and Pathe's Gazette." The instant success of ex-Ambastador Gerard's disclosures of Hun aims and methods in My Four Years in Germany" now being run in weekly instalments at the Elysium is an education in itself. It discloses the depth and preparation that the Germans went to show under guise ,of friendly relations they fomented the greatest crime against civilisation to serve their own ends. The revelations are truly remarkable, and the instalments grow in interest as they were unfolded Next week they enter upon a rich field of subtle sen- sation and cunning intrigue. Not one of the two instalments should on any account be missed. In other respects the Elysium programme next week brims over with good things. There is the much talked about Fox film of "A Rich Man's Play- thing featuring V desk a Suratt. Charlie Chaplin will be seen in "The Property Man." Then there is The Life of Lord Kitchener," a page from the history of the re-birth of the British Empire; another enthralling chanter in the popular Red Ace" serial; "Roarinsr Lions and Wedding Bells"; vraumont's Graphic and comedy films replete with laughter.

CYCLING AND MOTORING. I
CYCLING AND MOTORING. Riding as an Aid to Physique. Dr. Jane Walker ascribes tho great im- provement in the physique of young women of to-day to the bicycle and the blouse, using these as indications of modern ten- d.eneies for recreation and easy dress. "The young women of the lower classes at the present day." she writes. are inclined to be undersized, perhaps from insufficient ex- ercise. The middle-class young woman is usually of fine physique, and can best be described as strappillg-: owing to her ap- preciation of sports and other forms of ex- ercise." If parents would. but realise the rull value of the bicycle for their daugh- ters we would see even far more ladies cycling than we do to-5aay. The bicvcle not only provides a healthful, srentle exer- cise, but it takes the; girl into the fresh air. and ie M inexpensive as any form of physi- cal exercise can be. We have always be-e r- Inclined to look upon the bicycle too much I a,3 a man's exercise. In its ease and sreni tleness it is the ideal for the growing girl. i MOTOR-CYCLING. F Great and rapid were the development* of the motor-cycle during the few Yeail preceding August. 1914. Hardly a mollil, passed without some innovation; not al; ways an improvement it is true. but ifcf showed that the makers were devoting their? thoughts and energies to the improvement* of the motor-cycle, teince the outbreak oi1 the war manufacturers have been far to busy to devote much time to the working out of after-war problems. They have had all, and sometimes a great deal more, than they could do to keep pace with the heavvi demands for Government requirements^ Now however when there seems a DO sibility of peace within a reasonable tiyne. manufacturers are again turning theirt thoughts to the post-war machine, ajid ara? busily enfraged upo 1 plans for the improve* ment of the new models "THE WAJNDEREB." ——-—————————————————— <
