LLAifcLfiLO. -1 The week-end witnessed a successful performance of the cantata entitled "Under the Palms, given under the aus- pices of Ebenezer Baptist Church, at the Drill Hall. The proceeds were in aid of the Soldiers' and Sailors' Welcome Fund. Councillor W. Ilopkin, J.P., presided. Mr. J II. Rees conducted. Mrs. Daniel and Miss Olwen lives accompanied, while Mr. Frank Jones led ihe orchestra.

LLANGEftNECH. Every business house at Llangennech was closed at six o'clock on the occasion of the Soldiers'" conceit last Saturday night. Un Saturday evening, at Bethetda Chapel, a concert was given in aid of the Soldiers' Fund. Aid. D .James Davies MayüJ; of Llanelly), presided, and the artistes were Misses Megan Thomas (Llan- elly), Betty Evans (Burryport). Mr. Dd. ilarry, R.A.M. (Llvvynhendy), and Mr. D. Brazell,, R.A.M.; violinist, Mr. W. H. Simon; organ and accompanist, Mr. Car- edig Williams. The expenses incurred were defrayed by County Councillor D. J. Jone«.

PEMBROKE DOCK. A remarkable accident occurred recently in a shop in Pembroke Dock, in the neigh bourhood of the dockyard. A num- ber of persons, including soldiers, work- men, and several women munition work- ers were standing in front of the counter when the floor suddenly collapsed and tho whole lot were precipitated into the cel- lar below. When they had finished sort- ing themselves otit of it, strangely vnuugn noiwdy wa-s injured, though tho women had been badly scared, and ono of them fainted.

PONTARDULAIS. j The death has taken piace oi an old and resected native of Pontardulnis, in the person of Mr. John Thomas, St. Teilo- "treeL Ho was an- old servant of the G.W.R. Co., retiring as a lirst-class engine driver utter 35 years' service. He w.as a senior elder dt the local Wesleyan diurch for over 30 years. He was S2 years of age, and is survived by two sons, Messrs. A. and A. Thomas, tho well known builders' merchants and con- tractors. The elder son, Mr. Arthur Thomas, who lived witli. his father, is lying dangerously ill.

GRlTOi^F ERRYi County Councillor T. Gwynne, Briton- ferry, who has recently been seriously ill. is improving in health. One of the prizes offered by the Briton- ferry Vegetable Show Committee at their annual show to be held in August is for the luigee-t and heaviest potato grown, and another for the most ireakish freak vegetable. The statement of accounts of the 'icrry Boys at the Front Fund for last year shows that the public subscriptions were Ss., against £123 8s. the previous year. From fetes, cone-erts, etc., £ 177 17s. d. derived, in comparison with £138 9s. 2d. in 501G. Including the balance of 1 £ 3f>9 9s. lid. brought forward, the total income of the year was £ 631 18s. lid., and the expenditure £ 303 7s. a sur- plus 01 E238 lle. 4d.

I NEATH. An interesting lecture on Alsa,ce and Lorraine was delivered at the Neath and. District War Hospital by Miss Phillips, of London. The lecture was illustrated by lantern slides. Capt. Morris, the M.O. in charge, presided. The matron, Miss Billing, proposed a vote of thanks to the lecturer, which was seconded by Mr. Tom Bavies (secretary), and supported by Dr. Prell. Swansea. Lodge of the Pastmasters of the L.O.A.S. met in conference at the Shepherd's Hall, Neath, on Saturday, under the presidency of Bro. J. C. Rowe. The chief theme for discussion was tho creation of a Ministry of Health, intro- duced by the Chief Shephexd, Bro. W. Bowen Davies. An interesting inter- change of views resulted, and there was a general agreement to the principle of the scheme, and a unanimous opinion that it was in the nation's interest to create one department to take sole charge of the public health of the country. The subject will be further discussed at a future meet- ing to be held at Swansea.

LLANELLY. Llanelly's young tenor, Sergt. Sydney Charles, is figuring in the concert at Wellington Pier Winter Gardens. Mr. Wm. Evans, Lakeficld-road, Llan- elly, has been presented by the London Committee of the Bible Society with a Bible in recognition of his services as hon. secretary of the Llanelly Welsh branch for 18 years. A most gratifying report has been pre- sented to the Llanelly Borough Allotments Committee. It states that last year there were 772 allotments in Llanelly. This year there will be 1,181, an increase of over 50 per cent. One of the most interesting develop- ments in Llanelly after the war will be on the town estate where the G.W.R. Co. have purchased ten acres of land. It is intended by the company to make Llan- elly one of the most important engineer- ing centres in South Wales. Llanelly"s V.C., Ivor Rees, is home on leave from France. The death is announced of Mrs. Phil- lips, widow of the late Mr. Tom Phillips, the tinplaters' leader, which took place at the Llanelly Hospital, deceased, who was 68 years of age, was a faithful mem- ber of Lloyd-street Chapel.

A correspondent writes to us to draw attention to a very pluck deed performed on Friday by Mr. Harry Taylor, the Swansea .boxer, It ap- peare that a horse attached to a I wagon. took fright and flashed doin-n Cal- vert-street at a terrific rate. Hearing the commotion Mr. Taylor ran from his house and, without a moment's hesitation,. grasped the tail-end of the cart. By this method he was enabled to keep pace with the runaway, and eventually reached the horse, which he grasped around the neck and brought to a standstill.
