I YVLH AUTHOR'S DEATH.
YVLH AUTHOR'S DEATH. The Passing of Mr. Tom Matthews, Wales has sustained a great loss in the daath of Mr. Tom Mathews, son of Mr. Matthews, the Llandebie schoolmaster. Mr. Matthews was one of the most en- thusiastic and earnest of young Welsh Nationalists. His spirit, indeed, was too intense for his frail body. He threw him- self with most intense energy into litera- ture and art projects for the betterment of the country he toved ao well. In art, he had won for himself a pecu- liar position in Wales. He had written the tife of John Gibson, the sculptor, and this year there was published from his pen an exceedingly useful catalogue of works of art suitable for school deooratton. In important issues of « Cymru" lie was bringing the great outside world of art int& the lives of the Welsh peasantry, and we hope that at some time it will be found pos?bl? to r?nbli?h those brilt aFtisIa? of &ig. He had done ranch historical Teseareh work, and one' result of his studies amongst the av-ehives of Paris wais the publication Qf a volume throwing new light upon Welsh history. He was also a kppn educationalist, and it is revealing no secret to Estate that some brochures from his pen led years ago to new discussions on points in the Welsh educational system that had been regarded ds finally dde4 and settled. Mr. Matthews had been for many vearg a great sufferer. He died on Wednesday in his sleep. The funeral takes place at Llandebie on Monday.
