PONTARDULAIS D-G- M. | ViCKQUR AFTER BEING OFFICIALLY REPuliTEO KILLED There was great jubilation at Pontar- dulais on Thursday when news officially arrived that, Private Willie Williams, eldest eon of the late Mr. Gritfith Wi- liams and of Mrs. Elizabeth AA-illllull;, Goppa, had received tbe D.C.M. for conduct in underground war- fare near Ypres, on August 2(ith. He joined the Devons in Sep- tember last, but a snort while ago was transferred to the Royal Engineers. A few months ago hi6 widowed mother received official intimation from the War Office that he had died of wounds. Fur- ther inquires were instituted by Mr. Isaac L. Davie.s, schoolmaster, and the report was officially contradicted. He was home on furlough early in August, and had only been a few day £ back in the trenches when his oportunitv came. Prior to enlistment Williams was en- gaged at the Graigola Merthyr Colliery, and the greatest enthusiasm prevailed amongst the men there when flia news was communicated to them by the popu- lar manager, Mr. D. Joseph Davies, M.E. The hero comes of a large, well-known, and reepected local family. He is 26 years of age. and married. The official ehromcle of his brave deed runs th-tts:— -The e nemy had exploded a mine jnst short of our parapet- A gallery was driven out to protect our trench, and a German mine was struck. It contained a charge, but, our gallant men "-Priva.te Williams and two othe-" csucceeded in withdrawing the detonators and over half a ton of explosives in time." Before he enlisted Pte. Wil,liains was employed at the Graigola Merthyr Collieriee.

She was carried into the Mermaid Hotel, and at- tended to by Dr. Davies and Dr. Curtis, Mtlmblfa. It was di^ovemd that fjhe had sustained a fractured thigh. She now lies &t the. Swansea Hospital. Pentland, of the South I Wiiles Borderers, nephew of Mrs. Peter Davies, Temperance-place, Lammas-6trect, Carmarthen, is reported wounded in France. Ho had been previously wounded and invalided home. PONTRHYDYFEN MAN KILLED. I Pte. Dd. Thomas Miles, North Staf- ford, a native of Pontrhydyfen, who wa^ kiiiwl in action on the 23rd August in the Dardanelles. At the outbreak of the war he enlisted in the Welsh Regi- ment. and trans- ferred to the Staf- fordshire Regiment. In times of peace; he worked at the Cynon Colliery. He was a very genial yowng fellow, and popular amongst all classes. CWMGORSE MAN DIES OF WOUNDS. Private 2057 Tommy Evans, of the lst/3rd Welsh R.A.M.C., has died of wounds received on August 14th at the Dardanelles. His parents reside at 28, Church-street. Cwmgorse, and before the war ho wn; employed at tho Gwaun-cae- Gurwen Colliery. Private Evans was 21 years of age. LLANDOVERY MAN WOUNDED. The parents of Private Tom Manning, 1,4th Welfh, of Stone-street, Llandovery, have been informed that he haA been wounded in the arm and is now in hospi- taL He took part in several bayonet charges in the Dardanelles. Hie. father is also serving with the colours. MYSTERY OF SWANSEA MAN'S I FATE. Mrs. Sullivan, of 22, Caepistyll-street, I Swansea, has received intimation from the War Office that her son, Edward Sullivan, of the Munster Fusiliers, had been wounded in the Dardanelles on August 15th last. His wife lives at 22, Marsden-street. Last month intimation was received from the Record Office, Cork, that the soldier had been killed in action on that date. Father Harrington is in possession of tile letters, and is I making inquiries. PONTARDULAIS PIONEER. -1 Corpl. SWANSEA NAVAL. BOY'S QEATH. News has been received from the Ad- miraltv of the death from fever after ser- vice in the Dardanelles, of Leonard Phillips, A.B.. of the Naval Brigade. He was one of a patriotic Swansea family, re- siding at 137. Carmarthen-road, the four boy., of which enlisted in the service < -f their King and County soon after the out- break of war. Two othej- brothers havo seen active service—Stoker Willie Phil- lips, who has been in two r.aT:11 battle*, and Private John -Sawyer, of the fah Welsh, now invalided. The remaining brother. Robert, is in training withttha Army Service Corps.
