IUNDER BOTH CODES. ——..
I UNDER BOTH CODES. —— Ii MOVEMENTS OF SWANSEA SCHOOL- BOY FOOTBALLERS. INTERNATIONAL TRIAL ARRANGEMENTS. I (BY ILkCISTER.") The Swantjea Rupger schoolboj-g not only played tlioii- full complement cf matches at the Kecreation Ground on Saturday morn- ing, but they aiso sent a strong fifteen to Pontardawe to give a helping hand to the Swansea, Valley Kugby Iieagne. The school- boy a of the Valley have been well organ- ised, and Mr. T. E. Jones, of the Pontar- dawe I-ligher Elementary School, bae gathered round him a band of enthusiastic teachers who intend to make the Swansea- Yalley League one of the beet in South Wales. Considering that they have only been in existence but a couple of months, the Yaileyites were inviting a ttiif proposi- tion when they opposed the Swansea Hoys on Saturday. As waa to be expected, they suffered a heavy defeat, but, they must not be disheartened, as the Swansea, fifteen is the otmnM4 the local league has been able to command for some years. Another year's expet4,ence will work wonders and when the Swansea boys a [rain visit the dis- trict they will probably have a. less i,-asy journey. THE EOISTEROUS WINDS. The games at the Keereation Ground were spoiled to a great extent by the DOis- teroue wind which swept the district. Yet riasyite this handicap some excellent foot- ball was witnessed. I was delighted with the fine display given by St. Joseph's and St. Helen's. Both sides this year have suf- fered much owing to the players being: of small pbvotoue, but on Saturday diey were equally matoheu in this respect, and were thus able to experiment in back play. The Greenbill lads deserved their win, hut they had to go all the way to get the bet- ter of the Vincent-street lads. Had Tom WilFamt3 been present, it ia possible that he might, by his customary cleverness, 41ave fru.trate.d the attacks of the St. Joseph's lads. As it was, Kedvere Riec almost suc- ceeded in equalising in the lost moment of the frame, when a well-directed shot just failed to reach its intended destination, the wind carrying the boll outeide the up- rights. Price, the SU Helen's custodian, played a clever game, and although one of the smallest lads playing, showed plenty of pluck in pulling up the St. Joseph's rushes. Collins a.nd Tucker also gave a good account of themselves, and were always in the thick of the fight. GOOD HANDLING. The St. Joseph's backs handled the ball well, Sullivan, Nae-h, and Lock especially showing: a fine aptitude for taking- the nail. The firet-named is improving each week, and he completely mystified the St. Helen's backs by giving a perfect "dummy," snd scored a really fine try. I hope that tins will be the. forerunner of many 6uoceases for the Greenhill la.ds, as they have !iad an uphill fight during the present season. Brynhyfryd put paid to the account of Da.nycrraig, who auffercd their first defeat in the second round. The Efustsiders opened well, and severely taxed the Brynhyfryd defence, but their lead of one try was iiot sufficient.. In the cecond moiety Bryn- hyfryd bad the assistance of a. stiff breeze, end they wore not lojig in wiping out their deficit. The forwards proved too good 16r D any graig, and forced the Eastsiderti to defend strenuously. Just before the call of time A. Lewis eueceeded in gaining the lead, and gave them a fully merited aouple of League pointro. Kees, Thomas and Alwyn Le\vi<s were prominent for Brynhyfryd. and their smart following up worried the Dany- graig backs. ivoi, Williams was at the top of his form, while Ham also gave con ciderable assistance, especially in the initial etagos of the game, when the Bryn- hyfryd defence was hard prefiecd. CONSPICUOUS PLAYEB6. C. Thomas and Grey were the most con- spicuoua of the Eastaidere' front rank. ind both worked hard to retain the lei-d gained early in the game. Among the backs. Hunt, Jarvis, Jim Evane, and Thome wero noticeable for come good play, but os a whole the back division failed to utilise the chances given them. Terrace-road fur- prised Brynmill by the quality of their play, and deserved their six-point vin. During the first half the game was confined to the Wee-icnders' territory. The Mount Pleasant lads ma-dc commendable efforts to open out the game, and the firet try ecorcd by Bell Jones was as good as ue I could wish to see, and this, followed by C. Daviee's try, practically (settled the result. After the interval the Westenders were unable to retrieve their pocition, -,A the forwards lacked determination a .id vim. Fitzgerald and Silvey did their ut- most, to pull them together, but until the last five minutes the Brynmill pack was in- I ferior to the Mount Pleaasnnt front rank. Mai I lard played well at full-back, and the two wiugs-Barter and Evans—tackled upleudidly, but the others were poor. a/nd lacked Peter's infl-uenoe. Tije Terrace-road forwards showed improvement, and were get a good example by Andrews, Williams, and Ilarrln. In the rear division Drintr was of inestimable value, hie lengthy kicking, both against and with the wind, gaining huge slices of territory. Boll Jones and C. Davioa ran well, the former taking lÜ8 passes splendidly and making ,1 bee-line for the posts. THE WINNING POINTS. Manselton put up a game fight against National, and ii. waa only in the last couple of minutes that the Oxford-street IM1 »"?re able to notch the winning points, In the second half the Manuel toniatte, put up a great dei«nee, And Although tho National- ists kept play near the Manselton line, the defence was only pierced on one oocation. Higgicfe, Weaver, Gimblett, and Burgeae formed ft Quartette cf sterling defenders, and the National lads well remember for some time the kLtiiDeoe (if the Manselton < tackling. Cohen and ltippon WCJIe the Dck t of the National forward: and both worked -5 untiringly throughout the gairn?. LT. r- ris was frequently in the picture, but, was It selfish, and did not. give his backe sufficient chances. Quick deecrves to bo compli- mented for (scoring the winning try, all he was continually on the W:iLeli for a ncorirg chance. Dyfatty were opposed by Tlafod. and ae each side were without some of their beet player* the footbnll displayed did not reach the u.?ital tft.indarcl. iiiisli was the pick of the Dyfattyitee, and was well supported by Ben Smitharn and Yal Trew. Halotl played a very moderate game, and Burns and Jim Thomas waa the meet capable lads oil the side The othene plodded hard, but they lacked the finish necessary to bring about scores. THE DRIBBLING CODE. "Dominie" writesAnyone who saw last Satr.rday'# trial match at Victoria Park ill readily admit that We pos?e»H Soono ex- cellent talent in Cur schools. It was grati- fying to see several of the "Swans," includ- ing Hamilton, Cubberley, Duffy, and Ander- son, on the touch-line. Ther were very keen on the play of one or two of the lads, especially little Shefford,, of Brynmill. The Poachers had a stiff task before them. They Were called upon to plek two or three out. standing players, whose nalt" were to be submitted to the Welsh Ooujtcil at Cardiff, on Saturday evening lstet, with a view to appearing in the international trial on Sat- urday next. The score shows how evenly matched the aides were. Play WOA rely fast and exciting. No sooner did tho goalie on ot'e side save frem his opponents than his own forwards art up an attack on the op- posite .go..I. Both goalies defended in en able manner. Of the two, was tested oftemA* than Winstone. and he was coolness personified. GOODING THE PICK. None of the four backs showed any zr-oaa merit. Gooding (Dyfatty) watl the pick, Jones (St. Helen's) was not 80 good ae usual, though at times he was most safe. West; ilorJev, and Hamilton were the pick of sii very good half-backs. The first numed-th4 biggest lad on the field—certainly possessed a very good idea of centre-half play. Hit trapping and placing were particularly fine. Playing in good fonn next Saturday. he bhould "walk" into the international side. Morley (Sketty) was in tip-top form. His Caves wei,o really splendid, and ha seemed a born Soocerite. Lack of inches alone kept him out of the trial match. "Jock" Hamilton has evidently studied hia father's play. He was here, there, ma everywheie, but he. aga,in, is too much on tho small side for international play. Curiously enough, of the two lines of for- wards, each possessed a most capable righft wing—iStonehouse and Young for the East. and Kees aud Japp fcir the West, showed very clever combination. Yonng, as right wing, was brilliant, bringing off many good rtitle along the touch-line, and centreing splendidly. Elsey was the best of the lefla men, rnd he did all that came his way in commendable fashion. SCHOOLS' COUNCIL.. The iocal Soecer League elected theiB secretary, Mr. E. C. Poole, as their repre* eentative on the Weleh Council, the gov* erning body for Welsh Schools' Association. Many member* of the local League at Jaet Saturday's meeting were very strongly op* poeed to the idea of holding the Interna* tional match with England at Swansea on March 7th, ae that wa& eo very near tha Rugby International date (viz., March >1). It wae felt that the Soocerites should da nothing which promised to be harmful to their Kugby friends. Tbe delegate wa a therefore asked to point this out at the Council meeting at Cardiff last evening. We understa-nd, however, that the arrange- menta between the Welsh Council ( ars been completed, and that the ma.toh will definitely be played at the Vetch Field on March 7. The Swaneea Schools-' Committee are to carry out the whole of the arrange-1 merits, and a grant of five guineas he* been made to the local League. The Swan- sea Committee suggested the following names (in order) for the Trial Match stA Pcnarth on Saturday next:-I, West; 2. Storehouse; 3, Morley; 4. Young; S. ReeO (Skefcty); 6, Elsey. At. the council mmtinm West was chosen at left-haif and Stone- houae inside-right. Young experienced very: hatd luck for the wing position, after & tie. the chaiTman "caoting" in favour oA Stevenson (Barry). i- ——————. ——?
