COLLAR TOO SMALL I ABERAYON GREENGROCER AND PONY. I At Aberavon on Thursday, Cornelius Wil- liams, greengrocer, Frederick-street, was charged with cruelty to a pony; Win. Sheehy was also charged with cruelty to e pony by driving it. -r.s. 'xj'iwes said he saw the lad Sheehy driving a pony and trap belonging to the defendant Williams. Witness examined the auimal and found a wound on the left shoul- der, It inches by 1 inch. Later in the day he saw the pony again being worked and witness told the owner of the horse's condi- tion, and also said he would report the mat- ter. Inspector Lindsay (R.S.P.C.A.) spoke to examining the animal, which he found. in good condition. There was, however, a nasty sore on the left shoulder, which had been under treatment. The sore might nave been caused by the horse's collar being too small, which would cause friction on the sore. Defenda.nt. in evidence, said he had lCrked the pony during the last seven years. The pony was in excellent condition, but he admitted the presence of a sore, which had been probably caused by the wrong collar being put on. The Bench, who took a lenient view of the case, fined defendant 15s., the case against Sheehy, the driver, being dismissed.

The morning neWPrtper", commenting on the reported peace terms of Germany, throw ridicule on all the proposals. The "Tribune" declares: "No American should be deceived thereby. From the view points of London, Paris,' Petrograd, and Kome, the war has just began. Peace will come when there has tieen a decision, and as yet there has been so suggestion of a de- cision. A year from now it may be pos- sible to talk about peace, but to-day all peace talk is either purposeful or preposter- ous—purposeful on the Teutonic side, and preposterous elsewhere." Tl^e "Tribune" likens Germany to a card player, who, in the çdv hours of an aIll' uigfot game, made good winnings and desires to quit with them, while the other players have no intention of permitting him to quit until they recover their losses and even more. The Sun," referri,? to the proposal of equal rights for Jews, says: It would he an insult to the intelligence of the Jewish people that they should be used with such obvious hypocrisy by Gerrnafiy which has so long dis- criminated against them." The Times," reverting to Cardinal Gib- bon's message, declares: While the Pope's impulses are worthy of all praise, it is not possible for President Wilson to act upon the suggestions which he makes. BRILLIANT NAVAL FEAT. RUSSIAN WORK IN BLACK SEA. (Press Association War Special). -F-k;f Lllo,,iday. In connection with the successful encoun- ter of Russian torpedo boat destroyers and the cruiser Hamidieh and two Turkish tor- pedo boats, the toLLowmg details have been oEfta?ned from an authoritative source:— it is known that a. system of providing Constantinople with coal by means of a large number of sailing vessals has ended in a coinpiete fiasco. The Germans and Turks are endeavouring to organise another system, and in this connection fotir large transports and one barque filled with coal were making for the Bosphorus, convoyed by a detach- ment of naval vessels, including the Hami- dieh, of 3,800 tons (armed with two 6-inolr guns and eight 4.7-inch guns), and two of the best modern torpedo boats of 620 tone ea-ch. At early morning on Sunday the two Rus- sian torpedo boat destroyers, Pionsiedny and Bystry, carry 3-inch guns, met the enemy. In spite of the latter's enormous superiority the Russian boats attacked at once. The i fight lasted three hours. After the Hamidieh had been struck seve- ral times, causing among other damage the putting out of action ot a 6-inch gun, utie enemy lied towards the Bosphorus. The Pronsiedny and Bystry, under the command of Captain Prince Trou- betikir, foilowed the enemy, keeping up a continuous fire. When the enemy had rounded Gape Nephen and was approaching the Bosphorus, our torpedo boats returned towards the coal transports, which had re- mained near Zanguldak, and sank tl\em, thus doing a useful piece of work, at' the same time as performing one of the most brilliant I actions of this war.

I iiie suoiy 01 an unKnown and mysterious assistant who rendered great help to the late Sir James Murray in his tremendous task of editing "The Xew English Dictionary" is told in the September number of the "Strand Magazine." Sir James was assisted by a large number of volunteer readers with whom he cor- responded, and much of the most valuable data which reached him in this way came from Dr. W. C. Minor, who wrote from Lrowthorne, a small village in Berkshire. For many months this went on. Eventu- ally, so much did Sir James feel himself and I Oxford University in the debt of the mys- terious scholar, that he invited Dr. Minor to be a guest of the university for a week, during which time every possible honour should be paid him. Dr. Minor replied regretting that it was impossible for him to accept the invitation owing to physical- reasons, but added that it. Wf)'lId give him the keenest pleasure to make the ;->cquainta.nco of Dr. Murray, a.nd invited hillJ to be his guest at C'rowthorne. Mr. Hayden Church, who contributes this I remarkable story, says that Sir James ac- cepted the invitation, and was met at Wel- Imgton Co!)e?o Station by a liveried ser- vant, who a&ked if he were Dr. Murray, and on deceiving aai affirmative answer, ex- plained that he came from Dr. Minor, and I led the way to a handsome brou,gham, drawn by two fine horses, which was waiting near a1, hand. Sir James entered the brougham, and, after a ride of a couple of miles, found him- self being driven into the courtyard of a HfJGE BRICK BUILDMG, ot a lorbidding appearance, as to whose character he could not even make a surmise. "Have the kindness to follow me, sor," said the servant, and straightway conducted the puzzled savant up a gloomy st-aircase and through a. corridor, ushering him eventually into a well-appointed private office, at which a. man of unmistakably offi- cial appearance was sitting at a desk. "Dr. Niii-ior, I presume?" ventured the puzzled philologist. No, Dr. Murray," replied the unknown, "I am not Dr. Minor, but he is here; and meanwhile I don't suppuse you have the iuea wnere you are. tills is Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum, and I am the governor." Dr. Murray stood speechless. "I had better explain at once," continued the .governor, ."that Dr. Minor, with whom vou have been corresponding, is an inmate of this institution. He is, in fact, an in- mate who has stood his trial for murder. "Dr. Minor is a citizen of the United States." the governor went on, "and when he came to us he was not in his right mind. "Dear Sir,—Much has Oeeai written about Germany's military met-hods and aims on land; not so much about her methods and aims at sea. et, in truth, the two a.re so intimately connected that neither can be understood apart from the other. It was in lfeOO that Germany first proclaimed the policy of build- ing a lieet against Britain, and, from the point of view of her own ambitions, the policy was a perfectly sound one. She aimed at world-domination, and against world-domination the British Heat from the r'l-- T"'I" I tune ui yueen J^iizabetn to the present day has always been found the surest and most effectual protection. The Germans have every reason to be II aware of the fact, for without the British fleet Frederick the Great must have suc- cumbed to his enemies, and without the British fleet Prussia would scarcely have I shaken off the Napoleonic tyranny. It takes, however, time as well as money to create a grand fleet, a.nd German states- men were too wise to suppose that they could at once call into existence a navy able to contend on equal terms with the Power which, as they saw clearly enough, was the most formidable obstacle to their aggressive projects, but they did not on that account doubt. the immediate advantages which their maritime pohcy conferred upon them. Thev calcu lated that a powerful fleet., even though it were numerically inferior to that of Bri- tain, would nevertheless render the latter impotent, since no British Government woulq dare to risk a conflict which, how- ever successful, might leave them in the end with naval forces inferior to those of some I third Power. j "This is the policy cleajly, though cau- j tiously, expressed in the famous preamble to the Navy Bill. It is unnecessary to add that the German Navy League entertained much more ambitious designs. So far, how-' ever, neither the designs of the German Government nor those of the German Nan" League have met, with any measure of sue- i cess. The British fighting fleet has become relatively stranger than it was thirteen months ago. and there is no reason to be- lieve that during the future course of the war this process is likely to be arrested, "It is, indeed, plain that after six months of hostilities Admiral Tirpitz %nd the Gov- ernment which he serves arrived at the ¡ same conclusion; they saw that the old policy had -broken down and that a new ¡ pcHcy must be devised. Is it because the arguments of the Secretary, of State have become more persuasive? It is to be found in tLe fact that the authors of the submarine policy have had time to measure its effects, and that deeds which were merely crimes in May, in September are seen to be blunders. I MOTHER AND CHILD. I I Scene at the Neath Workhouse. Rachael Bray, an inmate of the Neath I Workhou&e, was before the local magis- trates on Monday charged with assaulting an official. Mr. Windsor Willianis prose- cuted. The evidence showed that a nurse had occasion to correct defendant's child on Sunday laet, wh- t-ho mother sprang &t her, striking her a violent blow on the face aiid on the chest. Defendant, who wept copious tears, said the nurse beat her child unmercifully, and her mother s passion was aroused. "Unless discipline is maintained a.t the workhouse," said the Chairman (Mr. W. B. j Trick), "it W111 be pandemonium. 'W. thinJ? you acted too rashly, and you will be j sent down to Sw seven days."

The Allan liner Hesperian (10,920 tons) was 1 erpecioetj by an enemy submarine on Saturday night while conveying passen- j gers from Liverpool to Montreal. A number of pecple were injured. Happily, however, there was no loss of life, and the damage was nov sufficient to sink the laner, which is boing towed into Qissens- town. The attack occurred about 8.30 p.m. under cover of darkness, and, in the absence of evidence to the contrary, it is apparent that no warning was given in the terms of the reply of Cermany to the United States demands. When the liner was struck the captain promptly sent out an S.O.S. signal, and Government vessels arrived in time to rescue all on board. Among the passen- gers were wounded soidiers from the front. The Hesperian was torpedoed at 8.20 in lat. 50 N., long. 10 W. The vessel carried a crew of nearly 300, and the captain and twenty of the crew remained on board. A naval tug, \vith a portion of the crew and local seamen, went to the assistance of the disabled liner. About twenty of the pas- sengers and crew who were injured in the explosion were landed at Queenstown. Among them wero some Canadian soldiers returning to recuperate. Survivors landed here are almost destitute of clothing. Two other Government vessels are returning with additional survi vors. A. J I A. yueensbovvii correspondent adds that a sailing ship was also torpedoed. The Hes- perian was bound from Liverpool to Mon-  treal. I According to information received at the offices of the Allan Line in London, the tor- pedo struck the liner near the bows. The damage was sucli that the liner's two for- ward holds are full of water, but it was not sufficient to sink her. The total number of passengers was 314, and the company state I that all these have been saved. Happily, also, there has been no loss of life among the crew of 300. The Hesperian is being towed into Queenstown. I HESPERIAN SINKS. j LINER GOES UNDER ON I MONDAY MORNING ON INQUIRY AT THE ALLAN LINE OFFICES IN LONDON ON MONDAY MORNING THE PRESS ASSOCIATION WAS INFORMED THAT THE HES- I PERIAN SUNK THAT MORNING AT 6.47. I CREW ALL SAFE. A wireless message to Queenstown, re- ceived on Monday afternoon, stated that the crew of the Hesperian were all taken off be- .fore she foundered. 1 li AS HE FORETOLD. BLINDED CANADIAN: AMAZ- ING STORY. The Canadian soldier, S. G. Chambers, of Truro, Nova Scotia, who had been blinded in action and recovered his sight as the re- sult of being thrown into the sea when the Hesperian was torpedoed, had been under treatment at IUcj$Emergency Hospital. On bidding good-bye to the chairman of the hospital governors (Mr. Ben Bailey), last, Thursday night, he used the remarkable words All I want now is for the Germans to torpedo the ship and then I shall get back my sight.

"25 MILES AN HOUR." I MOTOR PROSECUTION AT I NEATH. I WITNESS WHO HAD TO GO FASTER." At Neath on Friday, Ernest Williams, Aberdare, was charged with driving a motor-car recklessly through the Vale of Neath, ou the night of the 11th August. Mr. Toulsen defended, pleading not gualty. P.C. Evans (Cwmgwrach) said he was standing by Captain Jenkins' motor-car, when defendant came a;long in a taxi. To avoid an accident witness had to 'jump on the step of the officer's car, but another man was not so fortunate; he was struck on the hip by the mudguard and knocked to the ground. At the officer's request he jumped into his car and pursued the taxi, and after going about half-a-miJe caught it lip, Captain Williams (5th Welsh) said the taxi passed him at the rate of 25 miles aai hour, and was aig-zagging from one side of the road to the other. j Mr. Toulsen If the car was going at 25 miles an hour, You had to go faster in order to catch it.N aturally. MI. Toulsen Perhaps the superintendent will make a note of that. It may form the subject of another summons. (Laughter.) Defendant told the court that previous to parsing the officer's car he had a punc- ture the wheel was flat, and it was unpos. sible to drive the ca.T at the rate mentioned. He was not going more than seven miles an hour. Sidney Williams and the Rev. John Thomas Williams (brothers of the defen- dant) gave corroborative evidence. Defendant was fined 20s.

A telegram to the newspnpe8 from Rome states that Serbia and Rumania are concen- • irating considerable forces along the route which would have to be ta.ken by German armies in order to join hands with the Turks. One hundred and fifty thousand Ruma- nians are said to be concentrated at Turn- Sever in, near the junction of the Austro- SeriOian-Rumanian frontiers. r ENEMY'S DUPLICITY. LAST DARDANELLES BA TTLE. —————— ??.—————— HILLS IN FLAMES. MAGNIFICENT VALOUR. i The great battle in the Anafarta sector of the Dardanelles battlefield on August 21st is vividly described bv Mr. Ashmead Bart- I lett. Our New Effort. The first atttinpc to se-zc tie hills round Anafarta having definitely broken down by the morning of August 10th (he says), dt required tune to scut and reorganise the Llnt, to collect the wounded, aud to land stores, ammunition, and artillery before any fresh attempt could be made against the position, and it was net until August 21st that the army was dn a position to make a frontal attack on the Turns in this quarter. The prizes which would reward success were great, and fully justitted a supereme effort. This ten days' intervaJ was, of course, made full use of by the enemy, who, now knowing definitely where our main blow would fa-H, was able to release his divisions cn the north station round Bulair, and bring some of them to the threatened point. All hope of effecting a surprise had now vanished, and it was obvious that the posi- tion comprised within the sector stretching from Hill 70 to Hill 112, the lines chosen for our assault, could only be taken by a frontal attack and sheer hard fighting. Meanwnile the Turks had made full use of the time afforded them, and, according to their invariable practice, had dug them- selves in up to their necks. Every dawn disclosed new trenches, which had been dug ill the night, and it was obvious from the manner in which they searched our beaches and camps with shell fire that several fresh batteries had been brought to this front. Tho British objectives were:—Left, Centre, and Right, Hill 70, Hill 112. The forces i-old off for the assault were: Hill 70, four battalions; Hill 112, eight battalions; a yeomanry division in reserve. Other divisions to the south were to charge the Turkish trenches in front of them and then wheel to the north, to their left, to attack Hill 112 from the south. The Attack. I' Exactly at three p.m. on August 21 the first gun wite fired, and for half an hour we witnessed another of those terrible bom- bardments which have becomo common- places on this bloody soil. The battleships and cruisers concentrated on Hills 70 and 112, supported by field guns and heavy howitzers. Once again the enemy's trench.es appeared to be swallowed up in clouds of earth and smoke, but the Turks showed no sign, and not a man left his position. Whilst this bombardment lasted the enemy's guns replied furiously, I ooncootratin;gtheir lire chiefly on and be- hind Chocolate Hill, which was wreathed in bursting shrapnel. Very soon the shells set fire to the bush and scrub, which, fanned by a breeze, burnt furiously, spreading with amazing rapidity, and a.t. times blotting out the pesi-1 tions in clouds of rolling smoke and lfames. Two battalions thus advanced on Hill, 70, and at ten minutes to five they made a final rush up the hill, one battalion from the west and another from the south. A great solid mass of khaki, with bayonets glistening amidst the smoke and dust, seemed to emerge from the burnt scrub and surge towards the trenches on top. j For a few minutes the artillery length- j ened the■ •• fuses and she Led the. reverse slopes, lea. Ing the trench line clear. The Turks came out on top and fired furiously into the advancing lines. Some of them seemed to waver for a moment and aban- doned the cnSij, rjrnnivg down behind, but the majority stuck to their trenches, determined to die where they stood. Our men got high up the hill, but on the north side the battalion was brought to a standstill by machine-guns aud cross- fire. On the south some of our men reached the top and jumped into the trenches, where they died fighting amongst the Turks at the point of the bayonet. In fact, at this southern angle a desperate hand-to-hand combat took place, and never have the enemy fought with greater courage and determination. For a few minutes it looked as if the i hill were won, for our men were swarm- ing all over it just below the crest, and had actually occupied a section of the trench line on the south. But then the Turkish battery behind Hill 112 began to pour salvoes of shrapnel into our ranks at & range of only 1,200 yards, which simply swept whole lines away and forced the survivors to retire further down the slopes to s me feebie cover. Here they hung on for a few minutes, but the attack had spent its force, and the men came back to the trenches they had so recently left. The attack had failed. Once more Hill 70 was left to the Turks, the wounded, and the dead. On the south side a division stormed the Turkish line of trenches on the fiat but failed to take the second. Unable to cleal- the Turks from the open our infantry wheeled to the north, according to the pre- vious plan, to form for an assault on Hill 112, whilst a brigade advanced from' the ridge in front of Yilghin Burnu, or, rather, they were driven off it to the south side by the terrible fire which had broken out. hav- ing been ignited hy the bursting shells. The flames swept in 11 solid bank, sur- mounted by rolling clouds of black smoke, right a-crcsjs the hill, and the heat was ter- rific. Many of the wounded who had been placed or had crawled there for safety had to be carried out hastily a.nd laid in the open. All this delayed and stopped the further development of the attack on Hill 112. The A division, wheeling towards the same objective, were caught at short range by the enemy's second trench on their flank in the open plain. It became obvious that it would be impossible to pro- ceed with the advance on 112 unless this trench line was taken. Throughout the af- ternoon the fighting in this quarter was in- tense, and the^rifie fire tremendous, but we could not gain another yarn or ground. N f Meanwhile orders were issued for another attack 011 Hilll 70 by a battalion which had hitherto been held in reserve and a mounted j division in reserve behind Lada Baba. This splendid bodv of troops, in action for the first time and led by men bearing some of the best-known names in England, moved out from under cover and proceeded to cross the Salt Lake in open order. No sooner did they appear than the enemy concentrated a heavy shrapnel fire on the advancing lines, i fully exposed as they were in the open, hut the men, moving as if on parade, pressed steadily on,, losing many, but never waver- ing, and farmed up behind the infantry bri- gade in front of Hill 70.. It was now six o'ciocK, and once more the crest was furiously bombarded by every available gun, while the Turkish batteries concentrated on our trenches. The scene was maj estic, but awful, for the light was now rapidly waning, and the whole horizon was almost blotted out by enormous clouds of smoke and flaipe as the trees, scrub, homesteads, and the very grass burnt furi- ously at a dotfen different points, while the noise of the guns and the incessa.nt and never-ceasing i-oar from thousands of rifles rendered the scene a perfect inferno. little after six a battalion went forward and seized the southern slopes of the hill and began to dig themselves in preparatory to a further advance against the top. At this point the shell fire seemed to begin to tell j on the Turks, for many of them could 00 seen streaming from the northern knoH! of the hill down the trench line, cither becaUM it had become untenable or they were pre- paring to meet the advance of our men. For about an hour there was no change in the situation, and then th-a Yeomanry again moved forward in a. solid mass, iorrriing up under the lower western and northern slopes, it was now almost dark, and the attack seemed to hang fire, when suddenly the Yeomanry leapt to their feet, and as a single man, charged right up the hill. They were met by a withering fire, which rose to a crescendo as they neared the northern crest, but nothing could stop them. Thev charged at amazuig speed without a single j halt from the bottom to the top, losing many men, and many of their chosen leaders, including gaiiant S:r John Mdlbanke. It was a ,storing sight, watched by thousands in the ever-gathering gloom. One moment they were below the crest, the next on top. A moment after many had disappeared in- side the Turkish trenches, bayoneting all the defenders who had not. fled in time, while others never stopped at the trench line, but dashed in pursuit down the reverse si ones. A Bitter Disappointment. Froni a thousand lips a siiout went up that Hill 70 was won. But night was now rapidly falling, the figures became blurred, then lost all shape, and finally disappeared from view. The battlefield had disappeared completely, aud as one left Chocolate Hill one looked back on a vista of rolling clouds of s-moke and huge fires, from the midst ot which the incessant roar of the rifle fire never for a moment ceased. This was ominous, for although 70 was in our hands the question arose could we hold it through out the night in the face of determined counter-attacks? In fact, all through the night the battle raged incessantly, and when morning broke Hill 70 was no longer in our possession. Apparently the Turks were never driven off a knoll on the northern crest, from winch they enfiladed us with machine guns and artillery fire, whilst those of the Yeomanry w ho had dashed down the ..reverse slopes in pursuit were counter-at- tacked and lost heavily, being obliged to retire. In the night it was decided it would be impossible to hold the hill in daylight, and the order was given .for the troops to withdraw to their original positions. Noth- ing, however, will lessen the glory of that final charge of England' s Yeomen. Thus ended this great fight. However, the troops at Ansae achieved some suc- cesses, the Australian infantry finally driv- ing the enemy from Hill 60, while our whole line was linked up with a trench line in- stead of isolated posts. )

Morgan Davies, J.P.. in the chair, the clerk (Mr. Wyndbara Lewis) reported on the compiling and coding of the national re- gister. and said the work was proceeding remarkably well. He way very interested to find that out of A population of from 3S,SC0 1 to 36,000 in the d!rict, no fewer than 55 per cent. were between the ages of 15 and 65. Immediately after getting back the forms they ta-ckled the coding and the arrange- ments of the pink forma, but regarding the latter the Government had not yet Vecided exactly what to do about them. They ac- knowledged the very generous aid given by tbeir numerous enumerators, and particu- larly the members of the scholastic profes- sion. The whole of the expenses would be little more than Ll, in view of which it did not seem necessary to trouble the Govern- ment about a refund. There had been some little difficulty with the forms coming from other districts. For example, one had been to Portadown, North Ireland, and another addressed to Rhos, Pontardawe, had gone to Rhos-on-Sea, North Wales. The chairman said they could congratulate themselves on the manner in which the work had been carried out. They owed much to the diligence and ingenuity of the clerk.

Evidently Army life agrees with Billy," for Morgan has come back in the boxih- world with a; bound, and at the two days boxing tournament held at the Ccsmopolk tan Gymnasium, Plymouth, Private "Billy" Morgan won the middle-weight competition of the Southern command. The winner got to the semi-final pretty easily and beat Private Dunn at this stag. of the competition. In the final Morgan was pitted aginst C. S. M. Ware. Thi. bout was very hotiv contested and there was so little between them at the finish that the referee ordered an extra round in whic' Private" Billy" Morgan secured the laurel s. I THE HESPERIAN. "HUGE VOLUME OF WATER." STORY OF A SALOON I PASSENGER. I Mr. Ronald Whiteway, of London, and lus wife were saloon passengers on the Rea- perian. Interviewed at the Queen's Hotel. Queens town, where Mrs. Whiteway had been conveyed with a dislocated sho Ulder, Whiteway said "We left Liverpool on tridtfy evenmg for Quebec and Montreal, having on board about 200 saloon and cabin passengers and probably a much larger num- ber of steerage passengers. Everything went well, and we had a pleasant trip down, the Irish Sea and St. George's Channel in delightful weather. On Saturday mght my wife and myself had dined and had pro- ceeded to the upper deck. At about 8 p.m. wt were sitting there and discussing the ex- pectations of a pleasant voyage, being then, as we thought, practically out of the danger z:ue and well west of the Irish coast. The se« was like a huge sea of glass, with not a ripple on it, and the Hesperian was steara- ing steadily on towards the west. Quite suddenly we i Felt a violent impact, 'J which almost Knocked us on uui chairs, and ,'<' in less time than I can tell it, a huge volume of water shaped like a round pillar rose high up in t.he air, almost as high as the mast. Then v ater -fell on the deck like a broken water-pout, and drenched us to the sl-in before we could seek shelter.
