DANGERS TO PEDESTRIANS AT CARDIFF. TO THE EDITOR OF THB WBSTERN MAIL. SIR,—I feel called upon to endorse the re- mark* of Mr. Frederick J. Mattey with regard to the railing in Fiizlinmon-einbankment. It scarcely needs his touching reference to re-call to all our roiuda the pad accident to which he alludes; and, from personal experience, I can bear him out as to the great danger there is Df othr. meeting a similar fate at the spot in question. I BRITISH .AND AMItlUCAN SF.AMEN.
BRITISH .AND AMItlUCAN SF.AMEN. TO THE EDITOR OF THE WKSTFRN MAIL. a_n Sir,—In these d.?. when General Hoocn M an the .g? and a credulous "ubilc in England an?a the Colonies ?o,.tin to p,,?r,ts thousands into his coffers, it may be refreshing to the public to hear that work equally meritoriiius and equi-117 deserving of the great heart of a Christian pubiic is b"in" carried on in other fields, in a less ostenta- tious manner and without the leverage of that most perfect system of modern advertisement* "the Salvation Armv." I refer to the missionary work carried on by the Church of England atnoug Britisii and American seamen in foreign ports. I venture to say that there is not a single work of reformation which General llooth is doing that cannot bo done, and is not being done at this moment, by our sailors' missions, while I woult challenge the permanence of our results as against hie. i have two seamen's institutes under my charge, one in Genoa (where the field is shared with an old-established Presbyterian mission, which, both in respect of its zealous management and the generosity of its supporters, is an example. to many) and one in Savonn, where the Church is in sole charge. E ich has a resident reader, who visits the ships for nbout eight hours daily, dis- tributing tracts, leaflets, and ns"fulliterature, and at the same time inviting the men to come to the institutes, where everything is provided for their comfort and social recreation, and where on certain lixe i days during each week concerts, temperance meetings, and prayer meetings are held, and special services conducted by the chaplain. Nor does the work end when seameo have visited and left these institutes, for the men are followed up by correspondence and commended to other missions when possible. This is the work that goes on from day to day throughout the year (14,864 sea. men having visited our institute in Genoa hst year and 9,478 our institute at Savona), and the £500 a year (roughly speaking) required to support these iusticuw is made up ?.ti,,Iy bV the voluni ary contributions of the friends of the mission and tbe seamen themselves. This year we require a considerable increase of funds. Shall we appeal in vain to a charitable public ? The institute at Genoa requires re-decoratioa throughout, and we require a magic lantern and some new furniture. We have the intention, too (if means will allow), of taking in an extra flat. At Savona we are building a now institute, as we have been turned out of the old premises. Fortunately, we have obtained a most excellent site close to the ships, which saves "Jack" from running the gauntlet of eighteen drinking shops. 11 We have seen tbe plans," says the Newcastle Chrmicle, "of the new establish- ment, and we CSD sorely say that nothing is being left undone to make the seamen who visit it com- fortable and bappy." Will any of your readers help us? One hundred pounds would send U9 on our way rejoicing. One dinner party less in the year among ten people would do it. The smallest contribution will be tbankfuUv received by Messrs. Granet, Brown, and Co., Via Garibaldi, Genoa, or by myself, at 26, Via MilanOt and 1 shall be glad to send a report of either institute to any interested reader.—I am, &c., reader.-i am, &c., J. T. CHRISTIE. British Chaplain of Genoa with Savona, Oct. 14.

The order made was upon a judgment summons against me, but I have a month to pay the amount of the judgment debt and costs, aud am, therefore, not likely to undergo the 42 dnys's imprisonment allotted to me. I may further mention that the debt upon which the summons wos issued was only crented sixteen days, so that I had the goods, solicitor's letter, and it summons all within that time, and if I wrote a sharp lettor to the plaintiff it waS the result of very sharp circumstances—I am, &c., JESSE W. SPREAD OF EARLY CLOSFNG. I TO THE EDITOR OF TUR M WBSTKBN MAIT. SIR,—Under the above heading I note a letter in your contemporary of Saturday signed R. Davie. in which lie glorifies Me-sr*. Jothara and Sons for their generous action-vioniely, promising to close their shop from November 1 at the same hour as their neighbours have been doing for the last fourteen month., I hall their promised gene- rosity with gladne. but why wait until the let of November ? Can it be thllt the spproching municipal election has anything to do with it ? May I ask Councillor Jotham, Why not close at once, anrl thereby secure the votes of a large number of shop assistants who reside in yocr ward, and who are at present a little dubious at this seeming sudden conversion to early closing? The good example thus, set I hope will have its effect. —I am, &c., Cardiff, Oct. 14. AN ASSISTANT. THE CYCLING CARNIVAL AT CARDIFF.…
THE CYCLING CARNIVAL AT CARDIFF. TO TRa BDITOR OF -THE WKJiTHBN MAIL. BIB,—We are glad to leain irom your edition oi to-day that the committee of the above carnival have decided to alter the datil from Saturday to Monday, November 2. We feel sure that this deeieinn will prove a wise one, and aid greatly to even a better financial result Ih-u that obtained last year; and, in addition, will remove the com- plaint that the procession will in any way inter- fere or stop business for some hours. May we suggeBt 11 the committee that they endeavour to get all tradesmen in the line of route taken by the procession to illuminate their shop window. with fairy lamps, Chinese lanterns, &c„ and, In addi- tion, to endeavour to obtain one or two ladies to stand in every slidj) door with a collecting box, suy from six to eight o'clock on that evening. We feel convinced that the amount so col- lected would prove a valuable addition to the total proceeds of tlie day. If tbecommiitee think one or both of these suggestions wise, we shall be only too Inppv to carry out the idea if they desire it.- We are, &c., SAMUEL BROTHERS. We are,-&c., SAMUEL BKOJHEK3. ARCHITECTS AND CARDIFF CORPORATION…
ARCHITECTS AND CARDIFF CORPORATION I WORK. TO THE BDITOR OF TIIII WESTERN MAIL. I SIa,-At Monday's meeting of the county berough council Mr. ShackelT expressed a wish that any corporation work which the borough engineer was unable to undertake without en- gaging extra assistance should be given to tbe architects of the town. How the suggestion was received I do not know, but I see that the matter was referred back to the committee. Meantime, will you allow me to put in a word to the same effect, and to thank Mr. Shackell for speaking on behalf of the architects of Cardiff. There are in the town no less than 32 architects or architectural firms, all of whom are ratepayers, and some, at least, very able and experienced members of the profession. Yet it is a fact that, rather than employ any of these gentlemen in that capacity in which they stand as professional men, the corporation have almost invariably instructed the borough engineer, whose ordinary duties, as has lately been seen, are sufficient to thoroughly engross his attention, to engage architectural assistance, in order that the work shall be carried out in his own office. The exception which proves the rule is, of course, the extension of the free library, art gallery, and museum, which work has been given to the architects of the original build- ing, with the approval, I may safely say, of every member of the profession in the town. Had this course produced unsatisfactory results the cor- poration would have some slight show of reason for not entrusting more work to architects. But as that has by no means been the case, let us hops that the advisability of carrying into effect Mr. Shacksll's suggestion will make itself apparent to the committee, with the result that some of our profession may even yet find themselves from time to time in the position of architects to the county borough council.—I 8m. &c., j F. THE CARDIFF CYMMRODORION SOCIETY.…
THE CARDIFF CYMMRODORION SOCIETY. I TO THB EDITOR OF THB WKSTBBH HAIL. I $in,-Tliere is a society of the above name in Cardiff. Its member, aslatn informed, are many. The main object of its establishment was to bring together the Welsh portion of the inhabitants ot the town into closer social union with one another for purposes of culture and improvement. It has existed for a number of years, and h. taken a leading part in arranging a certain number of dinners on successive St. David's Days, where the nation and its language have formed ter?ile themes of bibulous oratory. It has promoted in each year some half a dozen or so of lectures by disfinguished and semi-distinguished men of learning on various subjects, dealing chiefly with antiquarian researches, poetic effusions, and social habits of an antediluvian economy. These last have been particularly interesting to tho.e who live entirely in the past and who are not satisfied with any theory respecting the origin of man which makes not Adam a Cvmro "in whom there is no guile." All the lectures, it should be added, have given the lccturere an opportunity of dis- playing their special btrengtli to the admiration, if not always to the intelligence, of their audience. I must not, forget, lest someone forcibly remind me of the fact, that a series of pic-nics to localities of interest in the neighbourhood have been held under the society's patronage. In the last excursion its many os 27 members of the society, young and ol-l, enjoyed a whole dny together, and were as hnpi>y, I fancy, as the odd individual in the company would let them.
