CWMTWRCH CWBLLYNFEU. I
CWMTWRCH CWBLLYNFEU. I Amongst the lads home on leave this wek is Driver Willie Gnffitilí" of the Motor Tnnsport, A.S.C. He is the son of Mr. Thos. Griffiths, Ystrad- owen House, Cwmliynfell, and before joining the army was employed at the L. and P. Bank, Neath. He has been granted leave after some strenuous work in France. Pte. Griff. Jones, motor mechanic, popularly known locally as "Griff. Jones, Gwynfe," has also been on fur- lough at Cwmliynfell. Lieut. Howell Lewis, Gwvs, has also visited his home. He has been recuper- ating at a Cardiff hospital, and will proceed to the front shortly. He was wounded some time ago on the Somme. Sapper Arthur Trencher, of the Royal Engineers, who is a native of Barry, visited Cwmllynfell, the home of his adoption, whilst on leave from France. Consequent upon the s lack times now prevailing at Brynhenllys a ur- ther "draw out" has been resorte-.i and seven more men have been hC ..en notices. It is the wish of all in the Cwm that things will improve at an early date. Whilst following his employment at Cwmliynfell Colliery on Sunday, Mr. Willie Powell, Cwmliynfell, was in- jured by a fall of roof. He was con- veyed home and medically treated. He is now progressing favourably, and seems to be suffering chiefly from shock. Mr. Towyn Jones, M.P., and Mr. Gwyn Morris addressed a meeting at Cwmllynfell under the auspices of the War Aims Committee. The addresses were very well received. Mr. John Hughes, Cefnbrynbrain, presided. The sad news was received at Cwm- twrch during the week-end of the death in action of Lieutenant Daniel J. Williams, the second son of Mr. Joseph Williams, Abergwys. ri lie (w- ceased lieutenant was very well kno»n in this locality, and previous to enlist- ment was omploycd as a schoolmaster in London. At one time he also filled a similar position at Colbren, and was married to a Seven Sisters lady. He leaves a widow and one child to mourn their loss. Lieutenant Williams enlist- ed as a private, was given a commis- sion in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. There was a good attendance at the Temperanse Hall, Gwys, on Friday evening, when Sapper Ted Morris was presented by Mr. D. J. Price (school- master), Rhiwfawr, on behalf of the S. and S. Committee. The following took part in a miscellaneous program: Solos, Miss Olive Rees, Miss Ray Rees, Mr. Jack Oliver; comic song, Mr. G. E. Davies; penillion (in English) com- posed by Mr. Willie Owen, were sung by Miss Betty Davies; Welsk penillion (W. Owen), Miss May Williams; solos, Mr. Dd. Williams, Mr. Griffith W. George, Miss Getta Maddock, Mr. Sammy Martin, Mr W. Kendrick, Miss Walters, Cwmllynfell; Miss Morris, Cwmllynfell; Mr. Glyn Rowlands, Mr. Hy Harries. Mr. Lewis Thomas, J.P., proved an able chairman. A vote of sympathy was passed with Mr. Joseph Williams in the death in action of his son, Lieut. 1)1. J. Williams. An excellent jumble sale has been arranged to take place at the Cwm when the proceeds will be handed over to the S. and S. Funds. Further par- ticulars will be published later. On Tusday evening the Rev. Glas- nant Jones lectured at Bethel Chapel, on the subject "Gurnos Jones," under the auspices of the Lower Cwmtwrch Welsh Society. The attendance was good, and augured well for the session. The lecturer gave an excellent por- trayal of "Old Gurnos," which was greatly appreciated by his audience. The Rev. W. T. Hughes (president of the society), presided, a-nd amongst those who spoke were Councillor Jas. Powell, Messrs. Herbert Geo. Davies, loan Howells, and Mr. C. H. Edward s (Myfr Mai), who will deliver a -lecture at the society's meeting next week. On Sunday next anniversary meet- ings will be held at Bethel "Chapel. Glantwrch, when the well-known poet- preacher, the Rev. Crwys Williams, Swansea, will officiate. Large congre- gations are expected. The Rev. Llewelyn Bowyer, Dany- graig, Alitwen. will preach at Eben'e-I ezer Chape), Gwys, on Sunday. Mr. Tlioni;is, J.P., was the preacher L.bt ?undny. The Rev. J. Jeremy Jones, Cwmliynfell, -,)icaclii!(i at Veliii- dre on Sunday on The oeo,.«ion of the j ;■ nniveitsary meeting. Sapper Tom Jones, formerly of "Iks — tradgynlais, but IatK"r!y of Rh:mwt, has come home to the Valley on leave. He has been with a tmineliir'i pany of the, lloyal Engineer in France, j 1 t" Thanksgiving services In connect ion with Beulah Chapel, Cwmtwrch, were held during the week. ¡ News has been received from Pte. Evan Dd. Davies (late of Bryneithin, Lr. Cwmtwrch), who is with Army I Service Corps, that he has arrived at Me.sopotamia. "Gweledydd" captured the englyn prize at the Birchgrove Eisteddfod on Saturday, and was a close runner for the chair prize.
SOLDIERS LEAVE
SOLDIERS LEAVE In the House of Commons on Wed- nesday, replying to Mr Hogge, Mr. Maepherson said in June of this year there were 107,000 men in France who had had no leave for 18 months, but in August that number had fallen to 36,000, and he had every reason to suppose that since that, with the hearty cooperation of all concerned, arrangements had been made for leave not only for the remainder of the men in that category, but also for those who had no leave for 12 months. Answering further questions, Mr Maepherson saiid no man in France, at the present moment, had been out for two years without leave unless he had misconducted himself or overstayed his last leave. Regarding other theatres of war, Lord Derby had ar- ranged for special representations to be made to all the commanders-in- chief so that leave shall be given as frequently and as early as possible. Regarding men in Ireland, they were treated the same as the extreme North of Scotland, and instead of ordinary four or five days' leave 'it was hoped that in the case of men who had to travel long distances ten days' leave might be granted.

j 3UNE EXAXINEKS DIS- PUTE. TIT ISSUE. The dispute which ha* prevailed be. tween the South Wales eoalowners and the South Wales Association of Gol- iiery Examiners, which recently threatened to develop into serious trou ble, now sh()'S signs of being amicably settled, for the colliery owners have conditionally recognised the association, and on Wednesday the I first meeting of the two parties was » held at the oc*alowners' offices, Cardiff, Mr Thomas Griffiths, J.P., prt-sidinp, over the owners and Mr W. Frowen over the examiners. The points in dispute were lbcus-sed, .but no final settlement was reached, though the examiners were satisfied that genuine efforts were being made to arrive at an understanding, and the Examiners' Executive Council propose to recom- mend their assication to accept thf treins under which the Examiners' As- sociation will be reoogiris-ed. This proposal was considered by the Examiners' Executive Council at their meeting at the Park Hotel in tin afternoon, and it was resolved to refe" the matter to a conferenoe to be called at an early date.
STANDARD SHIPS
STANDARD SHIPS In the House of Commons on Wed- nesday, Sir L. Chiozwi Money in an swer to Mr Pringle, said the number of standard ships actually complete^ up to Sept-ember 30th was three. The hon. member would understand that this answer did not indicate the true situation: because it did not take in- to account the number of ships under oonstructkai or the number nearly completed. Mr Pringle askeo whether the pro- gress was up to the expectation held out bv the Prime Minister. Sir L. Chiozza, Money: It is difficu'ii- to make a partial statement on the subject without beting misleading. I hope my hon. friend wiH wait for & general statement which will shortly ht made in the House.
