h. CORXTY COUNCIL ELECTION. IDtO. 1 1, I -1, 1,' T-1, PORTHCAWL DIVISION.
LADIES AXD- GENTLEMEN,
LADIES AXD- GENTLEMEN, At the request of a large number of Rate- pavers hailing from several parts of the Divi- sion, I have the honour to offfcr myself as a Candidate at the forthcoming Election, which takes place on Monday, March 7th next. I therefore make an appeal to you for your sympathy and support. I need scarcely remind you that the County Council is not a legislative body it has simply to administer and carry into effect such Acts of Parliament a3 come within its scope. It is, however, of great importance that the Council should consist of men who are in full sympathy with these various Acts, and who will aid in carrying them into practice. I am in favour of Small Holdings, and would do my share in trying to procure them in suitable districts, where there is a genuine demand for them by men likely to make good use of them. In those districts where there is a genuine demand for Small Holdings I would try to make myself acquainted with the local condi- tions, but I would NOT advocate or support any scheme which would interfere with small farmers and their present holdings. I would try to secure for our Division a fair share of the large sums which are annually expended on the maintenance and repair of the main roads in Urban and Rural Districte: and also of the sums expended on the main- tenance and improvement of Highways or Public Footpaths. I am also in full sympathy with the humaner side of the County Council's work. I would interest myself in that part of the work which has to do with the treatment of the unfortunate inmates of our County Asy- lum and would bring to this work the brotherly sympathy of one who feels keenly for them in their helpless condition. I also favour the Medical Inspection of. School Children, recognising the importance of looking after the bodily health of our child- ren, as well as the training of their minds. This is essential, as in the stress of modern life, we need to emphasize the need of a healthy mind in a healthy body. The work of the Council is so låTge and varied, that I cannot deal with it in detail in my address. It has to do with Education and Sanitation, Food Adulteration, Police, Shop Hour Acts, Secondary and Evening Schools, LocarTaxation, License, Estate, and Customs and Excise Duties, and many other matters. I intend holding as many Public Meetings as I can during the brief time at my disposal, when I hope to have an opportunity of laying my views more fully before you. If you do me the honour of electing me as your representative, I will endeavour to serve you well, and to be worthy of the confidence reposed in me. I am, Ladies and Gentlemen, Yours faithfully, WM. J. PHILLIPS. Post Office, Newton, Porthcawl, February 24th, 1910. 1515
COUNTY COUNCIL ELECTION, 1910.
COUNTY COUNCIL ELECTION, 1910. TO THE ELCETORS OF THE COITY DIVISION. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, In response to the urgent appeal of a large number of representative Electors in various parts of the Division, I again beg to offer my- self as a Candidate for your suffrages and support at the forthqoming Election. During my term of office as your represen- tative on the County Council, I have endeav- oured to faithfully attend to my duties and to honestly represent your interests in this im- portant County. As a Ratepayer I have always opposed ex- cessive and unjustifiable expenditure. My political opinions are well known to you. I have always been a consistent Liberal and an earnest friend of Labour. It has been my pleasure to serve you on several important Committees of the County Council. I have regularly attended the meetings of the Committee of Visitors of the County Lunatic Asylum, and I trust that my tech- nical knowledge has been of some value as a member or the House, Farm, and Works Sub- Committees of this Institution. I have endeavoured to faithfully and impar- tially represent you on the County Assessment Committee. Educational matters have always com- manded my deepest attention. I have been for many years a representative of the County Council on the Bridgend Group of School Managers. I have always advocated the placing of Provided and Non-provided Schools on an equal footing. In appealing to you for your support, I am persuaded that my long and varied experience as an Estate Agent and as a Civil and Mining Engineer will appeal to you as a strong and important qualification in a Candidate seek- ing a seat on the Glamorgan County Council, and it must inevitably prove of great utility to the Ratepayers of this Division. My 12 yearservice as a County Councillor is before yov and I trust that the manner in which I hay., endeavoured to faithfully repre- sent your interests will win for me the enthu- siastic support of a large majority of the Electors. Should you again honour me with your con- fidence. my time and abilities shall 1- loyally devoted to the duties which will devolve upon me. I am, Ladies and Gentlemen. Your obedient Servant, WILLIAM EVANS, The Court, Pencoed, February 24th, HJlÚ. 1614
