TO THE ELECTORS OF THE BOROUGR…
Municipal Bye-Election, Dec. 3rd. 1907. TO THE ELECTORS OF THE BOROUGR OF ABERYSTWYTH. Ladies and Gentlemen,— The result of the recent Municipal Ejec- tion shows very clearly that the Ratepayers of Aberystwyth are not satisfied with the tvay in which the business of the town has been conducted during the last few years. The reckless expenditure of the, past year or two is nothing 'nore or less than a scan- dal, and the only pity is that those who are responsible for this waste of public money cannot be made to bear the loss themselves instead of the poor ratepayers. The action which you, as Electors, took on the 1st November will be made of 110 effect if you allow the seat now vacant to be taken by anyone who has been a party to the doings of the majority, whose policy you so unhesitatingly condemned at the re- cent election. It is therefore to give you a further opportunity of expressing your opinion that I now place my services at your disposal, and in doing so I wish to.say that my sole object in coming forward is to en- deavour to maintain the nigh reputation andi true welfare of the town—both of which objects, I 1 egret to say, have suffered much of late at the hands of some members of the Council, whose experience should have taught them to act otherwise. If personal squabbles are to continue the town must inervitably suffer as the time which should be devoted to the interests of the Ratepayers is wasted in unseemly scenes. v it is your wish that I should serve as one of your Representatives I shall endeavour not to lose sight of the fact that, we in Aberystwyth depend mainly upon the repu- tation of our town as a Health Resort and as an Educational Centre. I believe that if Aberystwyth is to hold its own with other Watering Places, better provision must be made for Visitors in wet weather, and I shall be prepared to support a scheme for the erection of Winter Gardens which be open all the year round. I believe ill this way a mucii large!- number of visitors might be induced to stay at Aber- ystwyth during the Winter Season, whilst the Undertaking—if properly maiiage-O.- should be a direct source of revenue to the town. In view of the extraordinary growth and J popiilarity of the important Educational Institutions which are located at Aberyst- wyth, it is more than ever necessary that our saiit a ry -,ir rangements-drain age, water supply, provision for isolation of infectious diseases—should be perfect. These are matters which allow of no delay if the natural growth of the town is to proceed. There are many other matters which I might mention, but I will only refer to the urgent need of providing Houses for the Working Classes. It is the duty of the Council to meet this great want by the provision of suitable houses which can be let at a figure within the reach of the ordinary Working Man. The tendency in the past, on the part of private owners as well as the Corporation, has been to build houses which arc beyond the means of the Working Classes, but which they have been forced to take owing to the scarcity of smaller houses. In such cases it becomes an endless struggle for the tena-nt to meet his rent and rates. That is not the position in which the Working Classes of this town or any other town ought to be placed. Ladies and Gentlemen, my desire is only to serve the town of Aberystwyth with a view to increasing its popularity, and I trust that In tie forthcoming Election you will be Qood enough to give me that support which you have so often given me on other occasions. I remain. Ladies and Gentlemen, Your obedient servant G. FOSSETT ROBERTS.

Abeirystwyth Municipal Election.
Abeirystwyth Municipal Election. TO THE ELECTORS. Ladies and Gentlemen,— I have been urged by a large number of Liberal and Nonconformist Ratepayers to offer myself as a candidate at the forth- coming election to take place on Tuesday, December 3rd. I have, therefore, decided to allow myself to be nominated, and now appeal for your support. Having served you up to a few years ago, for 20 years upon the Town Council and for nearly the same period up to the present upon the County Council, I venture to think that I can claim to have had considerable experience of public life, and I trust that my services in tha past will merit your support and vote on this occasion. There are important ques- tions of policy and administrations which will of necessity lead to debate, and pos- sibly differences of opinion, but it shall be my constant endeavour by my own conduct upon all occasions to prevent a recurrence of the unfortunate scenes that have occurred in the past. The growth of the town has t by this time made it necessary to consider the important question of Water Supply, and this matter shall have my best con si- deration. Another question of great im- portance is the provision of an Isolation Hospital. It may be possible to deal with this by joint action with the adjoinirg authorities which would reduce the cost to the town, and at the same time provide more efficiently for the needs of the town and district. This matter, as well as many others, such as the Extension of the Bor- ough, has been before the Council for many years and should be dealt with at an early date. I am fully alive to the importance, of Aberystwyth as a Watering Place, and any measures which make for the future development and success of the town shall always have my hearty support. I remain, Ladies and Gentlemen, Yours obediently, D. C. ROBERTS. 10, South Marine Terrace. November 2oth, 1907. 833c
