During the interval of judging an excel- lent luncheon was partaken of in a commodi- ous marquee which had been erected in the Show yard, the chairman being Mr. Bertie Davies-Evans, the president tor the year, who was supported by a large number of influential county people. The President submitted the health of the "Kinc; and Queen, and the rest of the Royal Family," a tost which, he said, was always most cordially received by Cardiganshire farmers. They all knew what his Majesty had done for agriculture. He was a keen exhibitor at, agricultural shows,. and took the liveliest interest in all that concerned farmers. All had, no doubt, seen photo- graphs of the King in the papers with a cigar between his teeth as he interestedly viewed the various classes at a show. A no more genial figure or a no more interested spectator could be found than his Majesty the King. Mr.- Loxdale proposed "The Lampeter Agricultural Society," which was, he stated, established many years ago, and had from I its formation done a great deal of good. It had always kept its head above water, and had ever made progress. As its shows there were always good exhibitiors whose entries I were generally very satisfactory. It gave him no little pleasure to couple with the toast the name of a gentleman whom they all highly respected, namely, Major Harford. (Applause). They did not know where Lam- peter or even its Agricultural Society would be without the great support which was al- ways given so readily and willingly by that gentleman. (Renewed applause). Major Harford, in cordially responding, acknowledged the kind way in which the toast had been given and received. He re- marked that at one time they had a very large balance in hand, but they kept in- creasing the value of the prizes until the balance had dwindled almost to nothing. They, however continued to offer very good awards He must remind them that more subscriptions were needed, and that more exhibitors should contribute to the classes, notably, the jshorthorna, which, he had noted, were comparatively fewi To bring about the desired end it was necessary that help should not only be given within, but without tli- Society's area. Not only should thev hold the show for the purpose of en- abling competitors to win prizes, but they should hold it with the objects of getting the farmers together for as all new re-unions of that kind were of a. profitable character. He could not help observing that farmers needed better shires. Cows were on the improve, but better bulls were wanted. He hoped that some of them ,would be brought into that country. It was no use selling animals at £ 15 when they could get jEoO. Advice was quite as good as money on occa- sion, although it seemed delicate to mention !t, still, he might say that many members did not pay their entries. Some had given considerable trouble in this respect, and he hoped that the committee would be so help- ed in future as would benefit this matter. (Hear, hear). Mr. Prvse-Rice, who had entrusted to his care the toast of the day, namely," The Judges" stated that without such gentle- men they could not very well have a show. It was no small matter for officials in their position to adjudicate upon such classes as had been witnessed that day. He thought 'they had done their work satisfactorily, and in so doing had found it difficult work. This spoke volumes. Mr. Forrester Addie, in acknowledging, the compliment on behalf of himself and colleagues, stated that this was the first occasion on which he had had the honour of judging at the Lampeter Show. He could only say that the classes which had faced him were as excellent as they might be. He had often heard Lampeter spoken of as 'a seat of learning, and from the stock pro- duced there that day, they might learn a lesson or two. Thev could very well inter- pret what he meant. Mr. Thomas, another judge, stated that he was agreeably surprised to see such an excellent lot of shorthorns. They would want a lot of beating in any part of the country. One heifer, owned by Mr. J. Lloj d Morgan, and a young bull, gave a good ac- "ount of themselves. He congratulated the owners on their enterprise. He would. however, like to see a better selection of milking cows. Mr. Rees proposed the "Health of the President," and coupled with the toa;t, the names of the vice-Presidents. Their Pre- sident had always taken a great interest in their show, and, for this, he was to be highly commended. The toast, having been warmly drunk, The President, who was received with great applause, acknowledged the kindness of the company. To be elected for the second time president was, he thought, a great honour, and he was pleased that in his second year of office they had secured a record gate, and that the Society was in a sound position. He then proposed the "Health of the Committee" coupling with the toast the name of Mr. Footman, who, in replying, gave much credit to Major Harford for the able manner in which he marshalled the committee. Professor Jones spoke highly of the de partment with which he had to deal. In class 86 of the crops there were three competitors, and lie had had no little difficulty in giving the premier award. The same remark might equally apply to class 88. The Lampeter Brass Band, under the con- ductorship of Mr. E. Davies-Jones, was in attendance, and played selections of music throughout the day.

AIACHYNLLETH Free Church Concert.—The following were appointed on Sunday last to represent the Graig Chapel on the Free Church Council.— Messrs. J. M. Breese, T. R. Morgan, E M. Jones, Evan Jones, B.A., H. Lloyd Jones, and Edward Breese. Poaching Affray.A, serious encounter took place on Friday night between keepers on the river Dovey and nine or ten poachers. A net, suit of clothes, and other articles were captured, and several persons identified It is expected that magisterial proceedings will shortly be taken. Show Committee.—At a meeting of the Show Committee on Wednesday, the lion, treasurer (Mr. John Rowlands) intimated that after receiving outstanding subscrip- tions he hoped to be in a pesition to submit a satisfactory statement at the next meet- ing which will be held in a fortnight to finally pay out the prize money. Death Abroad.—The death is reported from Australia of Mr. Thomas Hughes, eld- est son of the late Mr. Daniel Hughes, Fron- fraith ,Oorris. Decejased, who was sixty- eight years of age, emigrated to Australia in 1863, and paid a visit to his native land in 1887. At the funeral a Welsh hymn was rendered ov a Welsh choir. Popai-ture for America.—Miss Lizzie Lewis, daughter of Mrs. Lewis, Dolguog Farm, leaves Liverpool for America, (to-day) after a three months' stay at Machynlleth. A tea and concert was given at Penybont chapel on the occasion. Miss Lewis leaves with the best wishes of a large circle of friends. Vaccinators' Fees.—At the Guardians meeting last week, Dr. Rowlands, Towyn, and Dr. Edwards, Cemmes, refused to accept the revised and reduced fees offered by the Guardians for vaccination. Dr. Matthews wrote stating that he accepted terms with great reluctance. It was decided to refer the terms in dispute to the Local Govern- ment Board for settlement. Obituary.—The death took place last week of Mrs. Anne Jones, Poplar-terrace, late of Tanybryn Farm, at the advanced age of 78. Deceased was one of the oldest wor- shippers at the Graig Chapel, which place of worship she attended regularly untla. short time back. The funeral took place on Monday at the cemetery, the Rev. Josiah Jones officiating. Much sympathy is felt with the family in their bereavement. Golf.—A very pleasant match took place on the home links on Saturday afternoon last, when eight Towyn members paid a visit Some very good play was witnessed, and the hI ks (which are in excellent condition), played fast and well. The cups have to be won three times in succession to enable the holder to claim them as his property. Eulogistic references were made as to the excellent work done by M. Owen Davies fcr the club, and to whose untiring energies most of the success was due. The weather was glorious, and a good number of specta- tors were present. Petty Sedans.—Special Sessions were held on Wednesday last before Messrs. T. W. Bonsall (presiding), Edward Rees, Dr. Davies, and Major H. Bonsall.—Evan Evans, Blaencwm, Llanbrynmair, was brought up under a warrant charged with having been drunk and disorderly at Llanbrynmair. P.C. Humphreys proved the case, and defendant was fined 2s. 6d. and costs.—-John Pritchard, Caecarrog, Aberhosan, was charged by P.O. D. T. Williams with having ridden without reins on August 24th. Defendant said he had a leading strap, tut the Constable de- clared lie could not see it. Fined 6s. in- cluding costs.—David Price, Goedwig, E&- gairgeiliog, was summoned by Lloyd Roberts, river watcher, for illegal fishing on Septem- ber 3rd. Mr. R. D. Richards, Barmouth, clerk to the Dovey Fishery Board, appeared for the prosecution. Lloyd Roberts said lie saw defendant searching the banks of the river. He told defendant that he must search him. Defendant then produced a and triangle-shaped instrument for catching salmon Defendant, wHo did not appear, was fined £1 and costs. Rural District Council.—At the Rural Council on Wednesday, the Medical Officer reported that twenty-four cases of measles occurred in Commins Coch district and the school was closed. It was impos.si'ile to isolate the cases. The yard of Penegoes Inn was in a most insanitary condition and injurious to health.—The Inspector was directed to report on the well.—It was ordered that the school at Commins Coch should be closed for a fortnight.—The Coun- cil decided to press for the completion of alterations at Penegoes nn.—In his report, the Inspector (Mr. Richard Williams) stated that Green Villa Cottage, Oemmaes, was kept in a most insanitanr state and was smelling badly. Lecturing and serving notices had no effect. The condition of the house was a source of public danger. There were two cottages at Commins Coch over- crowded. One house contained only one room for eight persons. The attention of Sir W. W, Wynn's local agent was called to the house, and notice was served upon the occupier to find another house. "Clara P>otherem" upon which we have frequently commented at other shows was awarded the challenge cup for the best mare or filly in the yard. The Agricultural horses were of a type as would be oÎ usefulness to the dis- trict, and here Mr. Wynford Philipps, M.P., was a successful exhibitor, his" Lydstep Bloom'1 taking the silver medal offered by the Shire Horse Society. Mr. Harford brought five carters and he took several prizes. Although within easy reach of thousands Otf sheep, the Welsh mountain breed were few in number. "Tom. Shon Dafydd III" shown by Mr. Morgan, Capel Sion was a typical Welsh ram, but was a bit slack in I ins fleeoe. The lambs also were very good. In ihe Shropshires, Mr. J. Rees. Dol- gwm-issa. whose name as a successful breeder is well-known at all the leading shows showed very fine exhibits, and a young ram from "Heredity" which was recently sold for 40 guineas was described as being almost perfect, and worthy of exhibiting at any show. It took the challenge 'cup. Mr. H. i Bankes-Price, Dole, and Mr. J. S. Vs illiams, (JeUi were also successful exhibitors in this section. Pigs—described as the main support of every cottager—filled only eight pens, but all were of a high standard of quality. As at Tregaron, Mr. R,. S. Rowland took first prize or the best boar of the large breed, whilst in every other class all the prizes prizes went to Mr T. Davies, Pistilleinon, who for vlie fourth consecutive year took the challenge cup. Mrs. Roberts, the judge of butter and cheese expressed her gratification with all that had been submitted to her. The pot .butter she described as excellent, and so [was the Caerphilly cheese. The skim chcess was too "skimmed" and she advised com- petitors to make full milk cheese. The butter was well made both as regards coloar and taste. The garden produce did not cover the irsual space allotted for them, the poor Spring season having greatly handicapped horticulture.
