BRECON BOROUGH POLICE COURT.-
BRECON BOROUGH POLICE COURT. Monday.—Before the Mayor (Mr W. F. Parry deWinton), Messrs W. Williams, Evan Morgan, and H. C. Rich. LIQUOR CONTROL ORDER I PROSECUTION. Thomas Roberts, licensee of the Bridge End Inn, was charged under the Liquor Control Order with permitting Wm. Morris, labourer, of 8, Dinas road, to take intoxicating liquor from his premises during prohibited hours, and also with supplying the liquor and Morris was charged with taking it away. Mr A. Jolly (Messrs Edgar Thomas and Harries, Brecon) appeared for the prosecution, and said he was quite willing that the Bench should deal with the two charges against the innkeeper as one offence, but there were two offences under the Order, and they were bound to issue two summonses. With regard to. the question of penalty, he had to point out that in that court and others there had been penalties under this Order which had left the county at a loss, a loss which fell on the ratepayers, and he suggested that at least the fine should cover the cost to the county. Acting-Sergt. Boore stated that at 4-10 p.m. on the 3rd inst. he saw Morris leave the Bridge EndJLnn, and found he had two pint bottles of beer in a pocket inside his coat. Asked how he came by the bottles at that time of day de- fendant said he ordered them at 12 o'clock, but he had to go across the road to Mr Morgan, the currier, for some money for his brother, and then forgot them. Witness went to the land- lord and nskc1 nn explanation l-mt hpfnre he could answer Morris repeated his story, and Roberts then said "That is correct." Witness told the latter he should not have allowed the beer to be taken away at that time of day, and he replied that he knew he was wrong. By Mr Jolly Witness pointed out to the landlord that the beer was fresh. Morris There is froth on it.now.. Defendant Roberts There was froth in one bottle only. and I shook the other to show that froth could be produced by shaking. Cross-examined, witness said he did not hear Mr Roberts say that he was not aware that Morris had taken the beer until witness took the bottles back, but not hear him say he had not drawn it then. Defendant Roberts, giving evidence, stated that Morris came to his house shortly after 12 and had a drink, and paid for two pints in bottles. Witness filled the bottlete and put them on the bar counter, and noticed some time after Morris had left that he had forgotten to take them. About four o'clock Morris brought him some cabbage plants (a great many more than he had ordered), and left whilst he was examiniiflf them f and witness did not know that he had taken the beer till the officer came. Mr Jolly Have you, ever known this man buy beer and leave it for four hours before ?— (Laughter). Witness Yes. Morris also gave evidence, and naively re- marked that the constable would not have knov.'n he had the bottles if they had not rattled.—(Laughter). William Powell, timber haulier, Silver street, said he heard the order given for the. beer at about 11<\1). The Bench, after a-private consultation, dis- missed tiie charge of supplying, and lukû Roberts 15/- on the other charge. They also fined Morris 1 f> Mr Jolly applied for advocate's fee, ob- serving that otherwise the cost would fall on the county.. The Mayor said the Bench had considered the question, and decided not to allow ad- vocate's fee. AFFILIATION CASE. Thomn; Sc.inlon. a soldier, said to belong to Manchester, who did not appear, was ordered to pay .1,1- a week towards the support 02 the jl child of May Morris, of Mill street, and costs.

DRESSMAKING AT HOME.I
DRESSMAKING AT HOME. BY SYLVIA. A TWO-PIECE OVERALL. This pattern has been designed to be as useful as possible to a variety of workers, which is madf all the more possible by the fact of its being in two pieces of one, as in the ordinary overall pattern. In fact, it could be made to serve a wide vari«ty of pur- poses, and is thus a real war-time mode]. For instance, the upper portion, as can be seen in the smaller sketch, forms a nice use- ful everyday blouse, whilst the skirt can be used for an eve.ryday affair, and realised in a variety of materials. Made in washing fabrics, it forms an excellent model for an overall skirt for the business girl, which ean be slipped on and off a-s easily 5 an apron, and so lengthen the life of the outdoor skirt. So far -is land-girls are concerned, I have found that under certain conditions they pre- fer to work without a skirt, as this frequently < Pattern No. 1,223. Høre we have a real "multuna ion r'" .1"" mcdfcl as the pattern r can be used for at least three garments, viz., blouse, skirt, and overaii. It will take 3 to 4 yds. of doube-width material- hampers the movements, but they like to "have a skirt that can be easily slipped on when re- turning to their quarters. Hence this design. Fo Place and Cut Out. The centre-front of blouse and skirt should be placed to the selvedges, and the centre- back of the corresponding back port-ions to the fold. And here, let me add, if you want an ordinary all-in-one overall, all yen need do is to put the two parts of the pattern to- gether and cut all round the outline, excelt at the waist. The sleeves can be cut on the fokled material (lengthways, of course), wkilst collar, cuffs, and pockets can be placed to the best advantage OIl the pieces remain- ing. Trace round carefully, and cut out, allowing good turntngs, with 2in. at Isci.tf for the hem. To Make Up, Turn in and stitch the hems of right rnd left fronts qf blouse and skirt, make t'he but- tonholes, sew on the buttons to correspond, make and stitch on the pockets in both cases, and then join the blouse by the shoulder and tmder-arm seams, which should be French ones if the material will allow this, if i.ot, they must be nentened in the usual way, and then pressed. Make the collar, which is double, and stitched at the edges—secure to the neck, and finish off. Join and make the sleeves, arrange and stitefc in the annhole, neftten and finish off. Xow roin the skirt together by the s'de- seams, turn up the hem. stitch and press. Gather and stitch the waiSt-part in the band. which should be of the correct size, and finish off neatly. LAND GIRL'S KNICKERS. This pattern can be used >6 complete the land-ghT's outfit, or be accepted by the onli- narv wearer for autumn and winter use. Both kinds of wearers will find it a very comfort- undergarments. The darts at the knees do away with the bulkiness which is the ob; jection so often urged against the gathe-red variety, especially by wy active workers. As to materials, either cotton, or v,kjo«.iQH J can be employed, iftecerdins-, to circumstances and the wearer. Where the land-werker. how- ever, is concerned, drill is usually selected, either in blue cc khaki. l o Fiace and Cut Out. Open out yoiir material to its fuH st extent, and fold in'half, widrhways.
