MAY DAY AT RHYL. -
MAY DAY AT RHYL. CROWNING OF THE MAY QUEEN. GORGEOUS CEREMONIAL AT THE QUEEN'S PALACE. (By a "Pioneer" Representative). To-day was the annual May Festival at Rhyl the fifteenth of its kind held in this town. Owing to varied circumstances there has never been witnessed such a like gathering or one Which has aroused eo much interest, and on no previous occasion have thoee who were oon- noctod with t worked harder or with better purpose. For some months the arrangements have been under carefui considerttion. This year ma.ny changes have bocn effectod in the personnel of the committees, and new blood in troduced. By th b means, and while tho oomniittce contained many of the older ajid more experienced workers, new members were brought into the work, and the signal Kucoostf achieved to-day is ample vindication of tho reforms introduced. In fact, everybody, in whatever position he or she held, worked whole-heartedly for the success of the demoai- strit ion. East year's festivities resulted in a small de ficic.buo those who t^ok up the rel*ns of office tvcre determined that that shou!d be wiped out, and JI. balance carried forward. At the time of ■writing, it certainly looks a3 if their expecta- tions will be leaiised. In addition to subscrip- tions roceivod from generous patrons of the movement, the prize-list was swe!!ed by gifts from tradesmen and others, and these wero a-IIott-xl to the various classes. Certain difficulties have had to be centearidod wirh. For instance, some of the ladies resigned at a late hour, but though ladies may come and though ladies rr.ay go, the work of organisation laily cft. Another difficulty I i ),(-rt oroppod up was in connect ion with the band. The committee asked for tenders, and l:>ecauso they declined to pay the Rhyl Town B.,ijid more than last year, and accepted the lowest tender, there was considerable hubbub, but after events showed that the action of the Commit toe met with the approval of the townspeople. u' The general arrangements were directed by a. committee, of which Mr Philip Thomas. High -street, was eh-airma.n. Mr Thomas has been connected with these festivities for sev- eral vears, and on this occasion he made an excellent, and tactful president. He was ably supported by Mr Richard Sykes as vice-chair- man, and as a new member of the committee, Mr Sykes infused considerable energy into the movement, and in no srrwill measure* helped towards its success. The duties of hon. treasurer devolved on Mr Frank J. H. Beech, who, although an o worker, has not before held otica, but he proved a most capable offi- cial. giving much time and attention to the details. His ehief duties were discharged to-day, and without doubt the position of treasurer on thn day of the demonstration ro- ouires above average ability. The secretarial duties were again entrusted to Mr J. D. Polkiri_'horne \\ho connection with the festi- vitl% dates from 1894. The arduous work of training the children was once mere placed in the capable handy c-f M rs Davies and Mias Chilweil. who with un- I wards of 100 lit'e ones to instruct had no ligltt task, but it was m, which they diec.harsred with entire satisfaction to all concerned. The music was supplied bv Mr C. DeO"ineey's Or- chestra. a band of mr.sioians who did much to ensure the success of the proceedings. Mr F. RLron. M in previous voivr5:. 'made a capital Queen's Marshall, and 3-191) filled the position of chairman of the May Qneon's Committor'. The stacre management was. of course, in the hands of Mr P, T. Ashfield. and therefore it ;6 elm 's" needless tos! ate that the work was cured out efficient^ and satisfactorily. He crsranised end carried through the dramatic entertain- T" t, ic tnent. r>.nd if", suecess i" doubtless sufficient rf)- wird for the splendid' services he rendere< The Prize Committer had likewise plentv to do. and rt was no liVht that devolved upon its ohiirman fAIr Chas. SEA EROSION AT COLWYN Sp.…
SEA EROSION AT COLWYN Sp. Y. SAFETY OF THE LINE. At noon, on Tuesday, when the high tide occurred there was a brisk nor'-wester blowing at Colwyn Bay, and the sea washed over the promenade for the greater part of itii length, again soverely- trying the sea-wall, upon which the edge of the promenade rests. A largo ex- penditure in groyne's has recently been incurred by the Council, and they have been to some extent. successful in accumulating protective shingle a,gaihst the foundations of the sea-wall. ,g Erosion of the beach between Old Colwyn Station and the Penmaenrhos Headland is taking place, and the railway company are be- coming concerned for. the safety of the line at this point. The sea during yesterday's high tide waslied over tho sea-wall supporting the high embankment on which the railway ascends to the tunnel, and as this has not been so sub- stantially built as most of the company's eea-walle as the sea was not then deemed likely to do more than wash occasionally against it-there is some risk of the wall giving way. It appears that the. company haye ground for uneasiness also respecting the portion of the line between .the opposite end of the tunnel and LI ye- faen Station. This is laid on a high bank of earthen material, which » uperposed noon the limestono cliff, and owing to the constant and increasingly heavy, railway traffic, togther with the operations carried. on at the, limestone quarries and the attacks of the sea at tho foot of the lofty cliff, there is the possibility of a landslip which would involve the railway line. For months past the Railway Company have been boring into the soft material on the sea- ward side of the line, and reccritly thev cut gullies and channels with a view to the better .drainage of the water from the bank, as the Water is. of course, a factor in producing land- slips. The station-master's house at Llysfaen shows signs of being damaged by nce, s.nd has recently been supported with timber sho rings.

MR HERBERT ROBERTS, MP., SUPPORTS LOCAL OPTION FOR SCOTLAND. In the House of Commons the, second read- ing of tho Scottish Local Option. Bill was sup- ported bv Mr J II. Roberta, M.P. Me said Wales had for many years taken an interest in this question, a.nd on two occasions a VVclsh looal ojAron bill was read a. second time (hear, hear). He believed that in same farm the principle of the I»: 11 wou^d soon beeorno the law of the land. References had been made to the prohibition areas in large centres of population in England, and he had been r ferred tlo a's one who was more responsib'e tJ1-a,¡: anyone, else in the House or oountrv ;n resrard bo the application of I)ri.Twiile of prohibition in large building areas. Neither he nor his firm had over received a single resolu- tion or note <f protest, from any<ii living within thin area..Nothing-but £ ood had coime from the application of the principle in this particular area, and after 8.11 practical ex- perienoe was very valuable in the solution of a question of this kind.
