SATURDAY, AUG. 15th, 1840. In commencing the first number of this our unpretending publication, our numerous friends will readily overlook the imperfections neces- sarily attendant on a first essay and in making this our conge to our Readers and kind friends, we feel great pleasure in being able to congra- tulate them on the delightful weather which we have enjoyed during the last fortnight, and we trust we may hail it as an auspicious omen that our little bantling is ushered into the world by as resplendent a sun and as cloudless a sky as can adorn the heavens. This beautiful weather has enabled Aberystwyth to appear "herself again;" and the crowds of elegant women thronging the fashionable promenades of The Marine Terrace, the Castle Grounds, &c. have carried us back, in pleasing contemplation to her most palmy days. The Carriage-drives too have exhibited their usual annual appear- ance of bustle the road to Hafod, that pic- turesque seat of His Grace of Newcastle, and to the far-famed Devil's Bridge, being daily enlivened by groups of Tourists anxious to take Sketches of Scenery so justly pronounced majestic. Those too who know how to appre- ciate, in all its excellence, the benefit as well as the pleasures of a sea breeze, have not neglected to avail themselves of an excursion on the Water, and nothing can by possibility exceed the splendour of our magnificent Bay of Cardigan, studded with its beautiful little pleasure boats, or bearing on its bosom riches and merchandize from across the Atlantic. That very elegant recreation Archery has been revived under very auspicious management, and The Aberystwith Cricketers have taken the field for the Season ;-the Theatre too has been opened for the gratification of the admirers of dramatic talent; and a very efficient military band has been engaged to play martial airs and other selections of music on the Promenades our Arrivals are daily increasing in number and importance, and we look forward with confidence to as brilliant a season as it has ever been our good fortune to witness. Aberystwith Cricket Club This Club commenced their play for the season, on the 24th ult. and have met every succeeding Friday, when we were glad to see them muster so strong in the field. Considerable excitement prevails in anticipation of a Match to be played between Eleven University Gentlemen, (whe- ther Members of the Club or otherwise,) and Eleven of the other Members of the Club. The match is to come off on Friday, the 27th Instant, and specu- lation is very busy as to the result. We have also been informed that the Wellington Club, Salop, have challenged the Aberystwith Club to play a match to come off at an early day, which, we understand, has been accepted. Archery Club The Society of the Rheidol Arch- ers, established in 1832, has been revived, under the patronage of Col. Powell, M. P. with the Countess of Lisburne as Lady Patroness, and the Earl of Lisburne President. John Boultbee, Esq. acting as Honorary Secretary. The Society having revised their rules, have fixed to meet for the purpose of shooting, every Tuesday, unless the weather be wet and unfavorable? and then the next fine day from the hour of one till four, from the first week in May, to the first week in October. The Society commenced their meetings for this Season, on Tuesday last, when we observed the Patron and President on the ground, with numerous other Members, but the rain commencing almost im- mediately after the hour of meeting, the Ladies re- tired from the field :-on next Tuesday, however, we hope they will be favored with a more sunny day The Aberystwyth Races take place on Wednesday and Thursday next, the 19th and 20th Instant: and our readers will perceive by the Advertisement, that the Stewards have provided a bill of fare, which must satisfy the most perfect gourmand in turf matters,— there being no less than five Races and a Match for the first day, and four races and a Match the second day. Some of the Nags have already reached here. Physician and the Saracen Colt arrived at their Sta- ble3 at the Belle Vuc Hotel, on Wednesday last, from Jones's Training Stables, at Prestbury, and when we say Merry Lass and brother to Confusionee will be amongst their competitors, we think some- thing approaching to Racing may be expected. The Race Ball and Supper.-The Lessees of the Assembly Rooms, the Messrs. Careswell, have an- nounced that their Annual Race Ball and Supper will take place on Wednesday evening, the 19th instant, when we heartily wish them a bumper. The M. C. Ball.-Our respected M. C. has fixed Friday next for his Annual Ball, and we have no doubt that all the rank and fashion of the Neigh- bourhood will be present on the occasion. Mr. Williams's Concert We perceive by Adver- tisement that Mr. Williams has been induced to postpone his Concert until Friday evening, the 28th instant, in consequence of the numerous engagements in the Race week. The celebrity of the Misses Williams in London, as well as in the Provinces, justifies our anticipating a high treat on the occasion- They are engaged to perform at the approaching Musical Festivals in Hereford aud Birmingham, and we are happy to find that His Grace the Duke of Newcastle, has kindly consented to be patron of the Concert, on the 28th instant. The Flarbour.-A Meeting of the Trustees was holden on Tuesday last, at the Town Hall for the despatch of business, when a number of tallies were signed, and other matters discussed We were much gratified to hear that at this meeting some very important and admirable suggestions were thrown out, in reference to the general welfare of the Town, and we have no doubt that, emanating from the quarter they did, they will receive all that attention to which they are so pre-eminently entitled. We understand that the Earl of Lisburne has be- come the Owner of the Abermade Estate, situato about four miles from Aberystwith the Noble Earl having purchased it of Col. Gateacre, of Gateacre Hall-the purchase money we believe is £ 44,000. Duke of Newcastle's visit.-Oil Wednesday last, His Grace, accompanied by the Ladies Clinton, and Lord Robert, arrived at Aberystwith, from the Duke's seat at Hafod; and on Thursday, His Grace, accompanied by his family, walked to the Harbour, when he very minutely exam- ined the works there, as well those which have been executed since his last visit as those now in progress: with the whole of which, His Grace ex- pressed himself highly satisfied observing particular- ly the work on the Glacis on the sea-side of the Pier and the method of laying the stone on that portion of the work, which being placed vertically, presents a greater resistance to the sea, and adds to the firmness and solidity of the work. His Grace also observed on the utility of the transporting buoys, one of which was laid down about a fortnight ago, in four fathoms low water at spring tides, on the North of the entrance to the Harbour, and to which, a loaded Brig, the Renown," was lying moored, during His
