NOTES AND COMMENTS
NOTES AND COMMENTS MESSRS. Gwilym Parry and Abel Anwyl have been re-appointed borough auditors of Denbigh* DENBIGH Primrose League Habitation will hold its annual meeting on Thursday in Easter week—On the following night the Volunteers hold their annual Ball. A A report was current a few days ago, that the War Office Authorities had not sanctioned the militia coming to Denbigh in May for the annual driii, but had ordered that they go to Altcar. We are, however, able to say, on the authority of information which has been received -rom the War Office, that the Militia will cme to Denbigh, in May next for their annual training. IT is just possible also that the Hussars will hold their annual training in our midst this year. It is the turn of Ruthin to have the training, but owing to the condition of the Ruthin troop it seems doubtful whether the Regiment will not come to Denbigh instead of Ruthin. YESTERDAY afternoon the Rev D Griffiths was presented with a valuable and handsome marble clock, bearing silver plate with suit- able inscription, together with a purse containing 966 13s as an acknowledgement of his services as curate of Denbigh. On Tuesday evening the members of the church guild presented him with a pair of bronze ornaments to match the clock. DR, Turnour made the presentation, on Thursday, on behalf of the parishioners in a most admirable speech, full of feeling and most appropriate in allusions to the valuable services rendered by Mr Griffiths, and the high regard in which he is held by the whole of the parishioners. Reports of both presentations will be found on page 5. LOVELY weather has prevailed in the Vale of Clwyd this week; indeed it has been too warm and beautiful to last. One I, imagines that Easter had passed and that genial May was here. Flowers are most forward and everything assuming a spring- like aspect. It is to be hoped the winds and y frosts of March may not seriously alter this state and things. I « FREQUENT reference was made in the House of Commons on Friday night to the work of the Church in the Diocese of Sfc Asaph, by speakers for and against di2f\F- establishment; the figures in the Bishops recent charge being quoted by Mr Raikes to prove the great strides the churoh is making. THE inquiry at Denbigh on Thursday, as to the application ot the Council for money to buy Waterloo House and the property in Higbgate for street improvements, was a most formal affair, and over in half-an.hour. There was no opposition to the Highgate scheme, and only some slight objection offered by Councillor J T Hughes to the Waterloo House purchase, but the general feel- ing is clearly ID favour of the scheme of the Council. m m IN the reconstruction of Denbigh Fire Brigade, alluded to last week, there has been an appointment of new officers, the Brigade having elected Mr George Llwfo Lewis as captain. Mr Edward Henry Joyce, Vale street, as first lieutenant; and Mr R Davies, Britannia Buildings, as second lieutenant. Mr Helsby has been elected a member of the brigade in the place of Mr G LI Lewis promoted to be captain, and the latter also fills the office of engineer, which formerly was filled by a private member.

. ; IS THE MILITARY CENTBE…
IS THE MILITARY CENTBE ALL A MYTH ? NO BARRACKS TO BE 1 ERnTRn AT DENBIGH! LATEST RELIABLE INFORMATION. Have we all been fighting for nothing ? Has some one hoaxed as ? Is there really to be no military centre after all ? Such will doubtless be some of the excla- ) mations made by our readers on glancing over the heading to this paragraph, and we fear we must confirm their suspicions, bo- cause we have to assure them that the information contained in the above announce- ment is absolutely correct. We have obtained the information upon the very highest and best authority, and after the informant had been in direct com- munication with the War Office Authorities, that they have not the slightest intention of erecting barracks either in Denbigh ur in any other part of North Wales And thai I, a!» regards the establishment of a new military centra, no arrangements of the kind have been made, nor are any such t arrangements at present likely to be made. j.iiU WliOifci ouOjoCi, bO i&L t»a ihe Ceiltltt ib concerned, is in the future, and amounts to no more than this, that there is JUST THE POSSIBILITY of such a Centre being created no more than this, that there is JUST THE POSSIBILITY of such a Centre being created in Wales, and that IF it ehouldbe, Denbigh stands an excellent chance of being selected because of its situation, the facts ascertained as to its suitability as a camping ground, shooting range, and the military spirit per- vading the district, as evinced by the num. ber of army recruits obtained therefrom. That is fully as far as the matter has gone. Barracks certainlywill not be erected, and as to the Centre it is purely problemati- cal and amounts to no more than a few casual inquiries as to suitability; the only definite thing considered and acted upon by the War Office Authorities being whether the Militia should encamp at Denbigh for this year's training, and that question the Authorities have settled in favour of Denbigh. Undoubtedly the action taken in the Council and by the public meeting will bear good fruit, inasmuch as it will have strengthened the convictions of those who will have charge of the matter, if it should take definite form, as to the suitability of Denbigh as the Centre, and in that way the action of the Council and public meeting will have had good effect. Thus the "moralists," and "the army factors,' the opponents of the military, thd prophets of evil have poured out the vials of their wrath, and ottered their wleiietmi immmmiyi jtevwgi worked themselves into a white heat, and 1 others expended their ten pounds uselessly. ,1.. If they had been less impetuous they might have saved themselves all this, by learning what we are now able to impart to them, i that the danger of a military barracks is | a myth (no such barracks being contem- Jj plated), and that the probability of the town being made A military centre is VERY REMOTE INI>KED, and has not even reached an initial stage. Personally we regret, as the vast majority I y of the townspeople will, to find that there is so little foundation for the hope that Den- A bigh would once become what it gloried in t the past to be a garrison town," hut those > who have worked for this must keep their eye on the future, and be as ready as they were this time to step in and help on the movement when the scheme dops .teCe definite shape. vj

TXMPKRAHCB LBCTURB.—On Thursday evening last the Rev Daniel Davies, St Asaph, the organising secretary of the Church of England Temperaace Society in the diocese of it Aaaph, delivered a most eloquent lecture on the subject of Temperance to a fairly large audience at the i "J111"" 7* R,%ctnr nroaiding. The lecturer, 'n the most forcible manner. allalt with the subject in Welsh and English, depicting the terrible evils ef the drink traffic; urging that the drink was not neeessary to health and enjoyment, and pointing out that it was the bane of the in uuotiii! cl- ruining the bodies and sou!sof its victims, urged all to join 'nrch Tempertscs Society, and thus seek to stamp out the evil, Whilst he besought them to do this from the highest and most lofty motives that ef members of the Church of Christ, taking their inspiration for service in the cause from the Cross of Him who lived and died to save the lost. Wrox nana, popularly designated the "chief," of chief Shepherd, added more than ordinary interest to the proceedings. After some routine business had been disposed of and several new members initiated, Mr CromAr addressed the members, and ill. the course of an exceedingly interesting address gave some sound advice to his listeners. He pointed out the benefits to be derived by mankind from such societies as that one, which, he said, was making headway in North Wales. (Hear, hear.)
