PRUDENTIAL ASSURANCE COMPANY, LIMITED, CHIEF OFFICE HOLBORN BARS, LONDON. -:0:- r Summary of the Report presented at the Forty-fourth Annual Meeting held on 2nd March, ,I893. i !n* i THE DIRECTORS have much pleasure in pre- senting their Report and Accounts for the year \S-i2. ORDINARY BR A.NCH.—The number of Policies Ifvwd during the year was 56,912, assuring the sum Of *-5,886,889, and producing a New Annual Pre- Ujiaui Income of £ 319,948. Premiums received during the year were 1, bring an iacretiae ot £ 2224jJ65 ovi$|pte Of the year amounted to £ 418,667^. of Deaths was 2,932, and 117 Endow- it Assurances matured. yhe number of Policies in force was 301,643 INDUSTRIAL BRANCH.-The Premiums re- ceived durfegrthe y«ar wer<j5 £ 3,849,157, being an increase of £ 160,619. The Claims of the year-amounted to £ 1,601,816. The number of Deaths was 178,231 and 1,230 En- dowment Assurances matured. The number of Free Policies granted during the year to those Policyholders of five years' standing, yrko have desired to discontinue their payments, Was 47,395, the number in fcrce being 288,493. The total number of Policies in force was 10,105,877: the average duration of them is seven years. The total Assets of the Company, as shown in the Balance Sheet, are £ 16,30.J,652, being an in. oroase of £ 1,686,025 over those of 1891. The Directors have since 1886 been considering A plan whereby the great labour and expense at- tendant upon +be Quinquennial Valuation might be lessened, and have now maured a system of record- ing and classifying the risks in both Branches from day to day in such a manner as to make the work cf actual valuation possible at any moment at a comparatively small cost. The Directors therefore determined to exercise the power recently conferred upon them by the l-areholders, and a complete valaation for the past year has been made with the following results — ORDINARY BRANCH.—The valuation of this Branch has been made upon the same principles as those of the preceding Quinquennium, namely, a net premium valuation on the Institute of Actuaries' (Hx.) Table of Mortality for the life risks, and Mr. Fialaison's Government Annuity Table 1884 for the aafiuities, the rate of interest in both cases being 3 per cent. The surplus of Assets over Liabilities amounts to £ 369,500. INDUSTRIAL BRANCH.—The valuation of this Branch has also been made on the basis of a. net premium valuation at 3 per cent. interest, the Ttfble of Mortality being Dr. Farr's "English Life Table," No. 3. The surplus of Assets over Liabilities amount to £ 2^4,609. The total surplus of the two Branches is £ 664,109, out of which it is proposed to carry forward £ 270,0 JO (£70,000 from the Ordinary Branch and £ 200,000 from the Industrial), leaving X394,109 for distribu- tion among the participating Policyholders and Shareholders, in accordance with the Regulations of the Company under its special Act of Parliament. It may be thought that in carrying over so laroce a sum,,™ £ 270^000^6 D;h¡a9<>F 1 unoeeeasary oa'Uviotf'"bur..lthoi;f" ii fcciple provision | has betin made for every known contingency, it must not be forgotten that in so extensive a business the working of a single year cannot be taken aa the measure of the average profits over a series of years. The processes and results of tie valuaton. which has been carried out by the Actury, Mr. F. School- ing, have been approved by Mr. A. H. Bailey. By the adoption of an annual declaration of bonus Policyholders will obtain eal.h year a vested increase to the sum assured and will not have to wait until the end of a Quinquennial period. This advantage is emphasized by the fact that reversionary bonuses can be surrendered for cash. The Directors desire to record their high appre- ciation of the efforts of the staff of the Company in carrying out the work of the valuation, which, under the improved methods, was accomplished in less than one month from the cluce of the vear. The Balance Sheet has been submitted to Messrs. Deloitte, Dever, Griffiths and Co., whose certificate is appended to the accounts. Extracts from the Report of Mr. F. SCHOOLING, the Actuary to the Company. ORDINARY BRANCH.—The number of Life Policies in force at 31ht December, 1892, was 301,613, assuring, with bonus, £ 33,971,264 and producing a premium income of £ 1,707,488 per annum. After providing for all liabilities, there remains a surplus of JB369,500, which includes the tsum of £ 50.000 brought forward from last year. IMDUSTRIAL BRANCH. The number of Policies in existence at 31-t December last was 10,105,877, including 288,493 Free or Paid-up Policies, and the amount assured £ 98,214,167. The weekly premiums receivable in respect of these Policies amounted to L78,050 per week or L4 058,600 per annum. 0 After providing for all liabilities there remains a surplus of £ 294.609, which includes the sum of j6150,000 brought forward from last year. During the year C77,000 has been added to the sum assured by Policies completing their fifth year of existence, and £ 60,000 to the sum assured by Policies completing their tenth year. The present cash value of these increases, and of the sums assured under Free Policies granted during the year is £ 140,000.
