CARDIFF EXCHANGE.
CARDIFF EXCHANGE. "BUTE DOCKS, SATURDAY. As during the last two or three days, there was very little new business moving in the steam coal market. The general disposition seemed to be to await the final decision of the miners' delegates to-day in regard to the settlement, and also the action of the miners as a body in regard to Mabon's Day next Monday. There can be no question about the fact, however, that merchants are doing their level best to bear the market. On the other hand sellers are resolutely sticking out for good prices. If tonnage happens to be scarce for a time the "bears" will have a good time; otherwise, the market will remain in sellers' favour. Quotations are bound to be wide for a few weeks, owing to the uncer- tainty of the output, but after next Tuesday or Wednesday they will begin to get narrower. Meanwhile a fair amount of best Cardiff steam coal has been sold at'prices ranging from 15s to 16s, and best small steams can be bought at 7s to 8s. There is not much change to note in the freight Uiarket, but, if anything, ~the tone is a shade quieter than yesterday. The following comprise the latest operations:— OUTWARD BOUND STEAMERS. Cardiff to Algiers, 9 £ fce. (Algerie). Cjvita Vecchia, 9s 4*d fuel. Genoa, 8s coal, 8s 9d fuel (Illtyd). Genoa, 88.
------------SWANSEA EXCHANGE.
SWANSEA EXCHANGE. SWANSEA, SATURDAY. The following fixtures were completed here to-day:— Swansea to Cronstadt, 7s 9d coal, 8s 6d fuel. Honfleur, 6s. Stettin, 6s 9d. BALTIC REPORTS. LONDON, SATURDAY. FREIGHT !rIAnKET.-As usual on. Saturday, th^re is little to report, the feature being that there is. more American business at hardening rates, 3s 4d to 3s 6d being quoted. FIXTUItES-STEAUEUS. Azoff, 13s, new charter, barley cargo (Oaklands), 2,600 tons, 1st—10th September. Nicolaieff to Bergen or Copenhagen, 13s (Berkshire), 3,600 tons, 12th—20tlf September. Danube to Antwerp or Rotterdam, 12s 9d (Newquay), 3,400 tons, 17th September. GKNEEAXJ REPORT.—At the Baltic appeared to be no attempt to do business in cargoes of wheat; excep- tionally brilliant weather here, holiday in America, and short day combined, militate against trading; the tone of the market 'ruled dull. Maize-round, flat, and River Plate qualities offered at lid to 3d less money; buyers.hold off. Barley easier—14s lO^d.bid 'steamer four options due out to load for prompt • Azotf," 15s3d' wanted.

-----AN APPEAL TO THE REPORTERS.
AN APPEAL TO THE REPORTERS. David Rees,a man one would expect to see any- where but in the dock of a Police Court, is a sen- sible individual. He appreciates the preponder- ing influence of a Pressman compared with- a bench of magistrates. Rees is a venerable look- ing man, who when charged with drunkenness in. St. Mary-street at the Cardiff Police Court on Satardhy dramatically waved his hands and wagged bis head, convening the impression h e was quite deaf. Consequently the evidence as given was written and shown to prisoner,,who re- pudiated the? whole thing. The constable said* Ilees was drunk, aiid was so frivolous as to catch women round by the waist. This was indignantly repudiated. Corroborative evidence was furnished by the police,, whereupon Rees said his state was a matter of opinion. Councillor Andrews said he preferred to think it was a question of fact, and ifined prisoner 7s and costs; wfth the alternative of seven days' imprisonment. Rees was-about-to -remonstrate with the Bench, but despondently shook his head as if he considered such a course useless apdi turned to, the -.reporters' seat. He did not address them, but hts reproving gesticulation, apparently meant to convey. It's all a mistake,. and should not be published" was too much' for the gravity of the court.

General sympathy is felt with the bereaved family.
WHO KILLED THE" COO"
WHO KILLED THE" COO" ALLEGED EXTRAORDINARY DEPRE- DATIONS AMONGST CATTLE. An unusual object was placed on a chair near the solicitors' table at Newport County Police Court on Saturday. This was the head. of a fawn coloured cow of Jersey extraction, with the pretty curved short horns of that favourite strain. Beneath the ski. of the forehead was the envious rent by which her bovine ladyship's life had been abridged. Two men named Wil- liam Evans and William Johnson, respectively collier and butcher, of Risca, were in the dock about the affair, which was described as the felopious killing and slaying of the cow. Accord- ing to the statement of Mr H. Lyne, whoappeareds /for the police, there had lately been mysterious deaths of animals belonging to farmers in the "district of Rogerstone—those left apparently well overnight being found dead next monrmg. The two defendants had acted together in thfrdis- covery of the dead animals, and their purchase c from the farmer for a mere song and in thisf '011 way suspicion was aroused. Mr James Smith, tenant of the Golynus Farm, near Rogerstone, left two milking cows in one of his fields on the evening of the 29th, and at 4.45 a.m. next ,morning the defendant Evans called him up by rattling the door, told him there was one of his cows dying by the brook, and when they reached the spot Evans wished to bleed the ani- mal by cutting its throat. Ultimately Evans went away, and in an adjacent field the farmer saw him join Johnson. About 11 o'clock the same morn- ing Johnson, identified by the coat he wore-as the same man who had joined Evans, went to the farmer's place, remarked that be had heard there had been an accident with a cow, and. wanted to buy it for £ 3. Johnson was very anxious to buy the cow, and sprang its price tp £ 4, but the farmer decided that he would have the carcase examined. There was no external, mark to show the cause of death, but on If ting, the skin of the forehead, which the farmer did before the magistrates, the skull was shown to be fractured by a blow from some blunt instrument, probably a hatchet axe. A butcher afterwards^ cut up the carcase, and all the organs were healthy. She was a beautiful milking cow, said the farmer, and worth zEl3 or zE14 in the market. On this. evidence Mr Lyne asked for a remand, as two other similar cases were under investigation by the police, and it was believed that three charges would be preferred against the defendants instead of one. The magistrates accordingly re- manded the defendants for a week.

A CARDIFF WINDOW DISPLAY. If the advent of the autumn's chill evenings, were not sufficient to incline the mind of man and woman to the necessity of discarding their' lighter summer attire for the warmer and more comfortable tweed garments. which come "in, about the same time as the commencement of partridge shooting, the attractive, ingenious window display at the West End tailoring estab- lishment, in Duke-street, Cardiff, should provide the stimulus wanting.
