Lovers of thrilling and sensational fiotion will be delighted to learn that we have seoured the right to publish an absorbing new work of amgulu interest from the pen of JOHN K. LEYS, Author of The Lindsays." In tlhê The Mystery of Lowdon Castle," On the Track of the Iron Horse," GniUy or Nob Guilty," A Bird of Prey," &o., THE JGROKEN "piEXTER possesses an unusoal plot and an abundance of incident, and s. moreover, written in a style to please the most fastidious reader. The autbor of our new story, Mr John K. Leys, is well known as a writer of skilfttlly con- structed stories. His works, whilst quite within the domain of probability, nevertheless derive much of their interest on account of the fertility of their author's imagination. They are eeentially stories of action, rapid in movement, and are written in a vigorous style. Mr Leys has few compeers in the art of con- structing a story so as to sustain and increase the intereit with eaoh succeeding chapter. He lures the reader on from scene to scene, and holds him spellbound to the end of the story. In a serial competition instituted by one of the great weeklies, Mr Leys obtained the first prize of £160 tOr his sensational story In the Toils, THE BROKEN FETTER IS NOW APPEARING IN THE QARTIFF TIMER AND GOUTH -YYALES YYICEKLY NEWS OUTLINE OF OPBNING CHAPTERS. Dr. Stanford is summoned to attend a young Russian lady who seems to be dying from an inexplicable cause. On examination he deoides that she most have inhaled some poisonous gas from a scent-bottle placed by someone on tae table. The dootor manifests an unusual interest in bis patient. When he re-visits the girl be discovers the incriminating Bcent'bottle has been removed by Madame Fabrini, who is ostensibly the housekeeper. On being closely questioned he reluctantly produces a bottle, which is recog- nised by Ursula Beritaa, the patient, as the identical bottle. Dr. Stanford's suspicions of Madame Fabrini are temporarily allayed, but in | leaving the honse hie eye is canght by a sparkle of glass in the grave), which proves to be a fragment of a similar scent'bottle* The doctor returns, but finds that Mftdarfie Fabrini has disappeared he ia informed that Ursula also has gone, but is sceptical about the latter information. He oasually sees bet at a window, whilst he is going through the gardens, and goes back, when she confides in him, inform, ing him of the plot to destroy her 1,1. Her story is a sad and exoiting one. The foregoing conveys but a faint idea of the opening inoidente of a vety exoiting serial. The story itself is largely oonoerned with the affairs of the Nihilist Society, one of whose members is a traitor, and the evil gonitis of the story. He plots and counterplots, his ohief design being to obtain possession of the Beritza estates. To further his purpose nothing is too diabolical for his scheming brain, He causes Ursula's brother to be arreeted, thereby hastening ber father's death, and matures plans by which he hopes to get rid of Ursula herself. Attempting far too muoh) he defeats his own ends. A strong love element runs through the story, wfeich is one of "extraordinary power and sensation. THE MINE ]\jASTBR JQAUGHTER OUTLINE OF THE STORY. The Mine Master's Daughter deals with the varying fortunes of Annie Lynn, the charming daughter of a miserly colliery pro- prietor. Father and daughter have widely different temperaments Abraham Lynn is avaricious, unfeeling, vindictive whilst his daughter is generous and sympathetic, and endears herself to all with whom she conies in contact. Across the paths of these two lives there oomes John Ulvarston, olever and shrewd, but manly in character. He ooflMs as the new manager for Abraham Lynn, and soon makes drastic ohanges in the conditions of labour. He deals firmly with the old man, pointing out to the latter the consequenoes of bis niggardly policy. The miser yields reluctantly and suspiciously to the irresistible arguments aad infectious enthusiasm of his How manager, with the result that bis mine develops into a very valuable property. Meanwhile Ulvarston is captivated by Annie Lynn, but honourably refrains from expressing his feelings to his divinity, who if engaged to the son of a local banker named Cunningham, The hero plunges into wøtt. hoping to ODd therein an anodyne for his disappointment, and sucoeedB in amassing for himself a considerable fortune from an Old mine his employer has refused to work. Fortune's wheel turns slowly but surely, and Abraham Lynn finds bimself on the Veree OF bankruptcy. His daughter's iaue6. Cunningham, refuses to help him, but thfc noble instincts of Ulvarston prompt the latter to AESIGT the old man in his distress. Gradually Annie Lyan learns the Utle character of Cunninghnm, and marries Ulvarston. There are exciting incidents in the ooal wines, including the entombment of several miners by a large fall. Ulvarston is over- Powered by gae in a daring attempt at and is injured by a falling rook. The reader beoomes interested ia the hero and heroine from the first chapter, and follows them with increasing interest through all the vioiseitudes which lead to their anion.
