Rupee Paper, 56 to 5634- In another column is published a pros- pectus of the Peat-Charcoal Fuel and Iron Company of Ireland, Ltd.. which is a com- pany about to be formed for manufacturing peat charcoal for fuel and other purposes. A process has been discovered whereby raw peat can be evaporated, and the water entirely got rid of, and after the by-pro- ducts have been distilled off, such as the ammoniacal liquor, acetic acid, spirits of naphtha, and volatile oils, the residuum becomes peat charcoal, and in this state it can be compressed into solid blocks suitable for domestic- fuel at a price that will compare favourably with the best coal. In addition to this it can be usefully employed for the smelting of iron and iron ore, and for this purpose alone there is a large demand. The by-products are all valuable, and for which there is a ready sale in the markets at the present day. It is well known that there are very extensive iron properties in Ireland, particularly in the county of Leitrim, and known as the Creevelea Ironworks, which from careful surveys it is estimated that there are at least over seven millions of tons of iron ore of good quality. This property has been re- ported upon by very eminent authorities, who are all of opinion that by starting these works it would be im- possible to over-estimate the importance of this industry. The company which is now being formed has a capital of Y,120,000, which they intend to use for the purpose of developing and working these mines, as well as to utilise the raw peat in the manu- facture of peat charcoal, not only for the smelting of iron ore, but likewise* to manu- facture the charcoal, so that it may be efficiently used for domestic purposes, a necessity much felt in Ireland, where all the coal of good quality has to be imported. The list for subscriptions will open this day and close on the following Saturday for London and on Monday for the country.

BARROW IRON TRADE.I
BARROW IRON TRADE. I BARROW, are quoted firmer to-day, as prices have slightly advanced I owing to the restricted production of pig iron catisod by the damping down of furnaces during I a wagv-a crisis. There is no life in trade, and makers report that very litr,!r business is L"mg I done. Orders for Bessemer iron are very slight. Warrant iron is at 42s lOd net cash sellers, and Id l.css bnyfvis. Makers quote 43 6d to 44 "i,t irtt f.o.b. for mixed Bessemer numbers. Steel makers are doing no new trade, and report quiet demand for all classes of rails, plates, and other ( products. Shipbuilders are busy, but no new orders are noted. Iron ore is very much de- pressed, but old prices rule. Coal and coke in small..r consumption. Shipping- very quiet all round.

HEATH & SONS, 0ARDIFF, JpONTYPRIDD, AND -&- Y ONDON, ij pIA NOFORTE AND QRGAN IERCHANTS. (FROM SOUTH WALES DAILY NEWS. Zm JANUARY, 1891.) VERDICT OF Nixe HUNDRED.'—Under this title Messrs R. J. IIea1.li and Sons, Queen-street, Cardiff* pianoforte makers, organ builders, and music ware- housemen, have collected an imposing array of testi- monials and Press opinions relating to the quality of the musical instruments supplied by them. The Arm is so well known in Cardiff, and, indeed, throughout Sou h Wales and the West of England, that it is hardly necessary here to dwell upon its influence and commanding position. This collection of testimoaials serves, however, to do something more than certify to the excellence of the instruments furmshed by Messrs Heath and Sons. It shows, in a sense, how steady is the growth among tole general public of a desire for a knowledge of music, and how increasingly .lumeious, even in the homes of the working classes, are pianos, organs, and harmoniums. The great majority of the letters in this list relate to pianos, and while manv of them have reference to most costly instruments containing all the latest improvements, supplied to the well-to do, the greater number relate to serviceable instruments purchased for the homes of the wage-earning portion of the community. This growing love for so refining an art as music is a most favourable sign. For though in the Principality music has for generations been the chief recreation of the people, it has for the most part been choml music iu connection with churches and chapels that has occu pied attention, instrumental music is now, however, receiving lis fair share of attention, and all those in true sympathy with the art must trust that the move- ment will go steadily onward. These testimonials have been received from every quarter of the Princi- pality, while not a few come from other portions of the United Kingdom, and some noui South Ameriea.India, and other distant, countries. All speak most favour- ably of Messrs Heath's business methods as well as of their instruments. I-t. J. HEATII & SONS INVITE INSPECTION.
