SOUTH WALES FINANCE
SOUTH WALES FINANCE ICES DAY, Jan. 8th, 1395. A quieter tone prevailed to-day generally ill round. There were many inquiries for Barry New Preference Allotments, business being done at 9%, 9%, and 9% additional premium—slightly better than yester- day. Barry Preferred Ordinary were negotiated at 117%, 117%, and 118. As business has already commenced in Barry Preferred and Deferred Ordinary Stocks, it has been considered advisable to give them a quotation in order that the public may be in a better position to form some idea as to their market value. Taking the mean quotation of each, it will be seen that jointly they are worth about 240, but as they carry no dividend and Barry Ordinary Stock presumably carries about £5, the latter would appear to be 3 to 4 per cent. cheaper. It must, however, be remembered that purchasers of the existing Ordinary Stock will have to pay in a few days' time, while those of the split stocks would not have to do so until the middle or end of February. Rhymney Ordinary were easier, being offered at 209%, but no transaction is reported. There were sellers of Taff Vale Ordinary at yesterday's figure, namely 81%. Rhondda Preference were done ab 12%. Rhymney Iron New were marked down at the close to 16s 9d. Albions, too, were easier, being offered at a shade under 12 and London and Provincial Banks were transacted at 20. CARDIFF EXCHANGE. BUTE DOCKS, TUESDAY. A fairly satisfactory state of business continues to prevail in the coal and kindred trades, and shipments during the past six days have kept up well. The demand for steam coal, however, has not ben heavy, but stems are now filling up well, and last prices are maintained. The sharp frosty weather has improved the demand for house coals, but present prices are much lower than they were io the corresponding: period of last year. Patent fuel manufacturers are busy, and there is an average inquiry for coke. The pitwood market at the moment is quiet, but importers anticipate an improvement before thj expiration of the present week. The termination of the holidays has naturally given a slight impetus to the tin bar trade, but the market for iron and steel trades generally is very depressed.
