FLINT BOKOUGH3 AND FLINT COUNTY.
FLINT BOKOUGH3 AND FLINT COUNTY. The fibt in the Flint Boroughs is ovor, and Mr J. lic-t bci t Lewis Im8 emerged from the coDflict with flyluc colours. Trao his majority shews n considerable shrinkage compared with that recorded in his favour three years ago. Still the result is nouo the less gratifying. Never before has so deter- mined an onslaught beon made ly the Tory party np 'n the constituency, and cortainly never havo so many ndversa influcnocs com- bined to affect the Liberal position. When we oomo 10 cxumino CLO whole of tho cireum- Htauces attending tho election, the aurprisa is uot thiit Mr Herbert Lewis should find him- self with a considerably dlereifio,i majority, but that he should find himself with a majority at all. The contest in tho flint Boroughs have always been severe, and on two occasions Mr Pennant required the transfer of only some fifty voters to obtain tho position which he haa so often and so vainly struggled to secure. But at no time has he had so propitious an opportunity of attaining the prevailing wish of his life as daring the contest just ended. First of all Mr Lewis was handieapped by tho removal of upwards of on,) hundred and fifty of his supporters from Flint. Tho prut.al stoppage of the great chemical industry in the county town, has been an important factor in tho contcst. Not only hlij Mr Lewis's poll been affected by the removals that have taken ph:ce, but there is only too much reason to boliove that a substantial proportion of those who remained withdrew their support from him aDd tccordcd it to his Conservative op- ponent. They allowed their minds to be pais ned Ly the ab urd fallacies promulgated by To y o'ators, that tho depression which his piO-iucad so much distress in Flint, is the Liincfc result of a Liberal Government. When a large body of men, three-fourths of whom are lgcorant of the varied inflaences which govern and regulate trade, are in the which govern and regulate trade, are in the throes of the distreas caused by the want of sufiicieDt employment, they lend only too willing an ear to the sophism of thoss who wish to gull them. It is a comparatively easy matter to play upon the feelings of mon reduced to so impressionable a state of mind. They are ready to believe almost any- thing, and the occurence of the distress dur- ing the regime of a Liberal Government was to them sufficient proof of tbo truth of the representations made by Mr Pennant and his supporters. They were led into the trap, and ensnared by the specious argument of the Cockney Christian Socalist sont down to convert North Wales, not a few of them wavered in their allegiance to the Liberal party and cast their votes for Mr Pennant. Then the great le-actionary wave which has spread all over the country was also an in- fluence which told severely agunst Mr Lewis. This invariably has tho effect of encouraging the winning iside land discouraging the losing side. Add to this the combined in- fluence of the Publican and the Parson, and a pretty accurate idea may be formed of the formidable combination which Mr Herbert Le vis had to combat. But powerful as it undoubtedly was, it was not sufficiently strong to overpower the domination of Liberalism in the Boroughs. With such a candidate as Mr Herbert Lewis, it would indeed have been a disaster if tho Liberal colours had met with a reverse on Saturday. It i8 no exaggeration to say that the whole of North Wales regarded with special interest the outcome of the iesue in Flint Boroughs. Mr Herbert Low s seems to have ingratiated himself iuto tilo afFoctian of Welsi-imou in all parts ol the laud. Thoy admire hia con. scientious, upright honourable conduct; they arc impressed with his deep earnestness and have followed with sympathetic interest his promising parliamentary career, marked as it has been with a spirit of so much patriotism and nationalism. Not only would the defeat of Mr Htrbert Lewis have deprived Flint Boroughs of an ideal representative, but Wales as a whole would have been deprived of the assistamce of one of her ablest and ixost conscientious som at a grave crisis in her history. It is therefore a subject for general rejoicing that Flint Boroughs has not been submerged in the ro-actionary tide, and that Mr Herbert Lewis has retained his seat by a majority, which haying regard to all the circumstances, is of the most satis- factory nature. The example so well set in the Boroughs is we hope going to be followed to-day in the County, where the Liberal forces are assailed by the game formidable combination which has been so successfully r repulsed in the Boroughs. The depression in trade" shriek bus been worked in the County to its extreme point. It may have seived its purpose in a few instances, but we cannot bring ourselves to believe that it will result in any appreciable reduction of Mr Smith's majority. But it is the imperative duty of every Liberal voter not only to record his vote himself, but to see that every other Liberal elector does so. Every vote is needed, not one can be spared. It is not enough to merely return Mr Smith; that would only be a meagro acknowledgement for all he has done ft r this county. Whet the party should strive to eccure is such a majority as will shew to the worjd that Flintshire at least has shewn no disposition to follow the lead of those con- stituencies who have been fa'se to all their traditions ond principles, and handed their representation over to the enemies of the people. The one redeeming feature of this disastrous general electiou has Veen the loyalty with which the North Wales constituencies have clung to the party of reform. They have resisted in the most emphatic manner tho tiemendous attack made upon them. Not a loss has been recorded in North Wales; nor has, on the whole, the large Liberal ma joiities ehewn any considerable reduction. Flintshire is the last seat that is attacked, and it has been besieged with a determination that Deeds nil the esources, stroegtb, and the energy of its defenders to prevent it weaken- ing the Liberal position. Not a stone, there- fore, should be left unturned, nor an effort spared between cow and the close of the poll to maintain intact the great majority which Flintshire has always recorded for the Liberal patty. 6-1-
