THE OAKS DAY.
THE OAKS DAY. For the complete success of an Oaks day celebration the weather is the most important factor, and probably never before in this respect have the elements been more propitious than was the case this year. The wel- come rain of the preceding day had removed all traces of the great Derby carnival, and the beautiful Surrey landscape, as viewed from the grand stand and the hill, looked at its very best in all the charming verdure of early summer. It is not at all surprising, therefore, that such an attractive morning should have resulted in the road being largely patronised, and with the dust not nearly so objectionable as was the case on the Derby day, the drive was most enjoyable. The two railway companies conveyed a large number of visitors from London, and although the multi- tude was not so great as on Wednesday, the attendance was nene the less an enormous one. The Oaks is a race which is especially identified with the pitronage of the fair sex, and never has the occasion of the "ladies'" race at Epsom been more adorned by the beautiful toilettes to be seen in the almost endless number of drags and carriages drawn up on the opposite side of the course. Royalty was represented by the Duke of Cambridge and Prince Christian, and the great majority of the noblemen and gentlemen who were to be seen on the Derby Day were again present. The celebration, in fact, in all its surroundings was of the most en- joyable and successful character, forming a fitting windup to one of the best meetings ever held at Epsom. For the Oaks there were seven runners, bein: in exact accordance with the list of starters transmitted over- night. The paddnek was but sparsely attended, and Lady Hermit, Palisandre, and The Smew were not to be seen, being saddled in the vicinity of the starting post. Slight odds were laid on La Fleche, while, with the exception of Palisandre, who was well supported at 9 to 2, long prices were obtained against either of the others. No delay occurred at the starting post, and there is really not much to describe in the race, for after Broad Corrie and Lu Fleche had kept in front until coming round the bend, the former dropped out, and the issue appeared at the mercy of the favourite. Half way up the straight, however, The Smew came dashing along, and challenging with the greatest resolution, it was only I»y the shortest of heads that La Fleche was enabled "to atone for her being second insteal1 of first for the Derby. Her vic- tory, however, was without doubt one of the most popular ever witnessed, the enthusiasm being of a very hearty description as she returned to the weighing in enclosure. Although she failed to carry off the Blue Riband, La Fleche thoroughly vindicated her character for being a wonderfully game and generous mare. Our racing report supplies full details of the various events.

The seven runners were weighed out in good time, but as Palisandre, The Smew, and Lady Hermit were saddled in the neighbourhood of the starting post they did not take part in either the parade or canter. Broad Corrie led the parade and canter, but it was seven minutes after the time set for the race before the white flag was hoisted. After one slight break away, the flag fell to a good start, and Broad Corrie made slow running trom La Fleche and Lady Hermit; then came Palisandre and Arise, with The Smew last. On passing the mile post Broad Corrie drew clear of La Fleche, and the pair were followed through the furzes by Lady Hermit and Palisandre, with The Smew next, and Arise now last. At the top of the hill La Fleche drew up to Broad Corire's heels, but the latter drew away again half-way down and came round Tattenham corner clear of the favourite, with The Smew dra, wing up third, in front of Shining Star and Lady Hermit, the other pair being now well beaten. When fairly in the straight La Fleche pulled her way to the front, and at the distance she looked like winning easily, but The Smew closed with her in the last 100 yards and a splendid race home ensued. The Smew ran with unflinching gauieness, and once looked like catching La Fleche, but the favourite just held her own and won annd the greatest exciteraeut by a short head Lady Hermit was a bad third, Arise feurth, Broidt Corrie fifth, and Shining Star last. IT WAS A NETT SALE. An action for the recovery of commission was heard -ittlieCardiffcounty-courtyestorday-bafore his Honour Judge Owen.—Mr Arthur Lewis ap- peared for the plaintiff, James Leach, who sued Mr Gregory, of the firm of Messrs Wheeler and Gregory, wagon builders, Radstock, represented Mr Metcalfe. The plaintiff's case was that he was instrumental in 70 railway wagons, being sold by the defendant to Mr Chivers, secretary of the Western Wagon Company, Cardiff, at L31 10s per wagon. When he applied to Mr Gregory for the payment of 10a per waggon commission, he repudiated all liability. It was urged for the plaintiff that it was a universal practice in the trade for the vendor to pay commission. Volumi- nous correspondence was read, and his Honour found that the sale was a nett sale, and gave judgment for the defendant.

A good number of sellers in the two first mentioned stocks have come in, as was thought probable yssterday, and this, coupled with an easier dem accounts in great measure for the temporary slackness of things and a tendency of prices to "eaken. CALLED BACK AT NEWPORT.
CALLED BACK AT NEWPORT. At Newport borough police-court yesterday the burly form of Patrick Ryan, a notorious cor nerman, appeared in the dock. There were two charges of assault and one of larceny against the prisoner. Thomas Wilson, an old man, who is nearly blind, stated that he was in the back pre- mises of the Wiltshire Arms, when a man came in and asked him for money. He declined to comply with the request, and the man called in Ryan, who held his hands whilst the other rifled his pockets, and took six penny pieces, and some tobacco and a pipe. Ryan, in answer to the usual question, elected to be tried by a jury. In the second case Bridget Caine, who appeared with her head bandaged, said that on Tuesday night Ryan stopped her in Cross- street and demanded a pint of beer. The lady protested that she had no money, and was knocked down. Her head came in contact with the kerb stones, and an attendance at the Infirmary was necessary. Ryan now protested that he wasinnocent of the assault, and quoted the the old adage about giving a dog a bad name," &c.-The Bench dismissed the case d larceny, and sentenced Ryan to two months' imprison- ment for the assault on Wilson. Ryan then turned on his heel, and was disappearing when he was called back, and received afurtherfourmonths' sentence for assaulting the woman.—Ryan "That's six. Thank you; thank you!"
THE REVELATION CAME TOO LATE.
THE REVELATION CAME TOO LATE. At Newport borough police-court yesterday— t before Messrs H. Phillips and H. A. riuzzey, magistrates—Dennis O'Leary appeared to explain whyhe was found Jl1 the bedroom of MrsSanders, in Quiet Woman's-row, on a recent date. Margaret Sanders, the thirteen-year-old daughter of Mrs Sanders, went upstairs for her cloak, when she was seized by O'Leary, who attempted to throw her on the bed. She snatched herself away and ran down the stairs screaming. Mrs Sauders came to the foot of the stairs, and all she could get from O'Leary, in resixmsc to her What are you doing there?' was a thrice-repeated "Come here, missis .Mr Digbv Powell, solicitor, stated that prisoner's brother lived next door to Mrs Sanders, and was proceeding to show that his client was drunk at the time, when the Bench told him that was no excuse. Asked if be could prove that prisoner was not in the bedroom, Mr Powell said he could not. Fined 20s was the abrupt comment of the Bench.—Head Constable Sinclair said that prisoner was well known to the Court, and was sentenced to three months' im- prisonment on the last occasion.—The Magis- trates' Clerk: Why did you not tell us this before ?—Mr Digby Powell (with a smile): It's too late now.
A FIFTY-FIVE YEARS' CHARACTER…
A FIFTY-FIVE YEARS' CHARACTER IN JEOPARDY. At Newport police-court, yesterday, Elizabeth Kelly, midwife, presiding in Charlos-street, was charged with stealing a pair of boots, the pro- perty of Catherine Daniels. The prosecutor visited Mrs Kelly's rooms and left her apron and boots there. She afterwards went out, and was locked up for being drunk. When liberated the applied for her apron and boots, but they were not forthcoming. It afterwards trans- pired that the boots had been pawned by a lad named Thomas Crowe, who told the court that he met the prisoner in Dock- xtreet, and whe sent him with the boots to pftwn. He pawned them and handed the proceeds to Mrs Kelly, and she gave him a penny. Prisoner said she did not knew whether she was guilty or not; she would, however, pUtad guilty. She had lived in Newport 55 years, and was th» mother of fourteen children it was her first offence, an>d drink was the oause of it. The penalty was fixed at 10s.
A WHINING THIEF.I
A WHINING THIEF. At the Newport police-court, yesterday, Lewis Hughes, a young fellow of 18, who has already undergone 11 terms of imprisonment, appeared to answer three charges of theft from the locomotive yard of the G.W.R., Dock-street, and a charge of assaulting two railway officials. Hughes who was described as the leader of a gang of coal stealers, was caught in the act of stealing coal from trucks. On another occasion he was. seen taking several ingots of steel; the third time he was chased and captured by Walter Lewis and Thomas Wright, and he kicked both of them. Hughes pleaded to be released, and the officials let him go. Shortly afterwards Hughes pelted Wright and the driver of an engine which was in motion, and one of the stones struck Wright on the arm. HugVes now boo-boo-ed splendidly, and promised to leave the town. The Magistrates' Clerk: Oh, yes, you will be sure to leave the town; and the Bench decreed that the length of the absence should be five months. On hearing the sentence Hughes set up a dismal noise,—Mr Henry Phillips, magistrate (to pri- soner Don't cry, it will do you good.

It is said that a rupture has occurred between Mr Abington and Charles Morton, and that the former gentleman's horses will be removed forth- with to Joseph Cannon's stables. By the success of Sir Hugo in the Derby, the Earl of Bradford won £ 8,000 in addition to his yearling bet of £ 10,000 to £100, and the value of the sttc-ag, £ 7,010. Lord Bradford does not as a rule back his horses largely to win, as he is a very careful speculator. He, however, generally has a big plunge for a place, and it is said he backcd Sir Hugo heavily for a situatiou, but did not expect the colt to win outright. On Wednesday Pater Jackson journeyed to Epsom, and for the first time in his life saw the race for the Blue Riband of the Turf. Peter was fortunate enough to draw the winner in a sweep, whilst one of his friends, whose figure is weU known at the Hoffman House, New York, was dead in luck throughout the day. George God- frey, of Boston, Jackson's first opponent in America, also witnessed the decision of the big race. There was not much cheering when Sir Hugo won the Derby, because the crowd had not won much money, but there were plenty of congratulations to the owner, Porter being one of the first to offer his. You didn't « think my colt could give your mare SIb." bis lordship observed in reply. I scarcely thought I should beat you, but I knew my horse must run well." The Duke of Cambridge kindly sought to cheer the disappointed trainer with the remark that the mare ran very game," but the fatal part of the business was that for the first time in her life she was beaten. "I thought she could not possibly be beaten, didn't you?" a disconsolate friend observed to the Duke of Beaufort, who sagaciously replied, I never think that of any horse."
THE STATE OF TRADE.
THE STATE OF TRADE. THE AMERICAN IRON TRADE. NEW YORK, Thursday.—The American iroB market, although quiet, exhibits a firmer tone. Prices are quotably unchanged. Business in American forge and foundry pig is slow, and prices are barely steady. Scotch pig is firm, with a good inquiry. American Bessemer pig is in fair demand, and values are upheld. Muck bars are in fair sale, and quotations are well main- tained, Spiegeleisen is still quiet, with rates un- steady. Manufactured iron is in moderate request at late quotations. Old materials are in limited demand. There is a moderate business doing in tin-plates, and prices are steady. Steel rails and blooms remain quiet and unchanged. Billets and slabs are in fair request at irregular quotations. Crop ends are dull at late rates. Copper is steady with the demand fair. Tin i* strong and in good request at an advance of 0'2 cent, being now 21'60 cents. Lead is rather sluggish at a decline of 0~2% cent to 4'25 cents. Spelter is steady and in fair inquiry.-Iron.
SCOTCH IRON TRADE.
SCOTCH IRON TRADE. GLASGOW, Friday.—The Scotch iron trade is fairly active, but the pig iron market itded, ment of the dispute in Durham has a depressing effect on pig iron warrants. Cleveland and Cumberland pigs are materially cheaper than last week the impression is that values will go still lower. A comparatively large business has been done in Scotch warrants at about 41s for cash. Special brands of makers iron are in some cases rather easier export demand is disappointingly small, and there is little chances of its improving before autumn. Con- tinental tariffs, as well as those of the United States, are now operating severely against the export trade. The demand for forge and foundry iron on the part of home consumers is easier.- The finished iron trade continues in a back, ward state, all the works being on short time while some of them are kept going with difficulty. Common bars are quoted L5 15s to L6 5s 6d, and best bars JB6 5s to B6 12s 6d, less 5 per cent. The steel workers have now all accepted reduced wages, and the -works are in full operation. Steel prices are on the basis of JE6 2s 6d to 26 5s for ship plates.
WHY HE DID NOT LEAVE THE HOUSE.
WHY HE DID NOT LEAVE THE HOUSE. Yesterday, at the Cardiff County-court, before his Honour Judge Owen, the Cardiff Tramway Co. brought an action of ejectment against George King. The defendant came to Cardiff shortly after the tramway strike, and was engaged as a car driver for three months, after which he was made foreman at the Oxford-lane depot. He then occupied a house belonging to the company, whose service, how- ever, he had now left, but whose notice to quit the house he had ignored. Replying to his Honour, the cletenciant said to" reason he did not leave the house was that when he left the service of the com- pany his arms and body were covered with sores from mangy horses. —His Honour I am very sorry for you, but I have nothing to do with it. That is no reason why you should not get out of the house.—Defendant But I have not been in a fit state to apply to anyone for apartments.- An order was made calling upon the defendant to give up possession of the house in a week.
