In the recent Oxford senior local examina- tion, Madge Thomson, Muriel Oldfield, Rebecca John and Constance Yarrow, pupils at the Tenby County School, passed in the first divi- sion, while Gordon Williams, another scholar, obtained a place in the second division.

On Wednesday and Thursday, September 22nd and 23rd, Mr E. Glover Thomas, will offer for sale by public auction the contents of Pas- keston, near Pembroke, the residence of the late Mr Henry G. Allen, K.C. Particulars of the sale will be found in the advertisement which appears elsewhere.

At the last sitting of the Pembroke-Dock County Court, John Davies, of the Prince of Wales, Tenby, obtained judgment for £2 13s. (goods supplied and money lent) against Frank Collins, late landlord of the George Hotels Tenby, an order of half-a-crown a month being made.

Mr Alexander Burnes Holland, of Bank House, Tudor Square, Tenby, formerly of Cambridge Villa, Newport, Isle of Wight, who died on the 11th August last, aged 50 years, son of the late Major Edward Burnes Holland, R.E., left estate of the gross value of E4105 15s. 2d. with net personalty JB5976 15s. 4d., and probate of his will, dated July 8th, 1898, has been granted to his widow, Mrs Frances Anna Lucas Elizabeth Holland, to whom he left the whole of his estate absolutely.

Sergeant-Major Pearce, the founder and hon. instructor of the Haverfordwest Boys Brigade, has during the past fortnight made strenuous efforts to raise a section of boy scouts to be attached to the boys brigade. He has found, however, that it is impossible to equip boy scouts for less than 26s. a head, and as the boys whe desire to join are unable to defray the necessary expenses, the idea has had to be dropped. The Haverfordwest Boys Brigade is maintained entirely by voluntary effort, and Sergeant-Major Pearce feels unable to add to the present heavy expense of further outlay on boy scouts.

At the Haverfordwest Petty Sessions on Monday a fisherman named James Humphreys of Milford Haven and Ferryside, was sum- moned for attempting to board a train while in motion at the Haverfordwest Railway Station. Mr H. D. Williams, on behalt of the Railway Company, mentioned that on the departure of the up mail train on July 31st defendant, who wanted to leave the railway premises with the object of getting refreshments, attempted to board the train while in motion. The train was brought to a stop just as defendant fell between the footbaard and the platform. He narrowly escaped injuries of a very serious nature. A fine of 10s. and costs was imposed.

An interesting ceremony has just taken place at Hook, Pembrokeshire, where Mrs J. S. Roberts, of Little Milford, has cut the sod of a new pit which is being sunk by the Hook Colliery Company. In doing so, Mrs Roberts wished the' undertaking every success, and hoped it would be the means of greatly adding to the prosperity of the district. The new pit will be about 100 yards deep, and it is intended to work three seams—the ton, tumbling, and rock seams. It is situated on Mr J. F. Lort Phillips s estate, and work will be provided for a large number of men. It is expected that over 100 tons of coal culm will be produced daily, and shipped at the Hook wharf on the river Cleddau.

The death has taken place at Spring Gardens, Haverfordwest, of Mr Stephen Phillips, who was employed in the local paper mills for over 50 years. Mr Phillips, who had attained his 82nd birthday, was known as the "last of the. Haverfordwest paper makers." He enjoyed remarkably good health, and during half-a- century was absent from work for only a few months. Prior to the introduction of machinery he was for 13 years engaged in making paper by means of a hand sieve, and he produced the last hundredweight of paper manufactured by the Prendergast Mill before it was closed down some ten years ago. Deceased is survived by a widow, to whom he was married 59 years ago, and several children, who now live at Haver- fordwest, Cardiff, Bristol, and other places.

Sir George Armstrong, the prospective Con- servative candidate for the Pembroke Boroughs, speaking at Hakin, Milford, on Monday night, said if the Government had done its duty it would have had all important bearing in Pem- broke and Milford Haven. The extraordinary development of the German navy meant that in the event of a war the North Sea would be impassable for our mercantile marine. Conse- quently diverted trade would inevitably go chiefly to Liverpool and Bristol. Milford Haven was essentially the port which com- manded this district, and if the Government had done their duty during the past three years they would have gradually brought Pembroke into the position of a first class naval port in- stead of neglecting it as they had done.

A petition signed by 22 residents of Rhodiad a hamlet just outside St. David's, complaining of the water supply, was read at the last meeting of the Haverfordwest District Council. The petitioners pointed out that the only water available was obtained from the wells on the neighbouring farms, and there was a scarcity in these during the summer months. It was men- tioned that this matter had been before the Council on several previous occasions and re- ferred to the St. David's Parish Council, but the latter body had neglected to take action. A report of Dr. Walker, the medical officer of health, was read, recommending the sinking of a public well, and it was resolved to inform the Parish Council that unless they took action within a month, the District Council would take the matter into their own hands. m

A curious and we dare say unprecedented incident (says the SUllthWales Daily Netos) has occurred in Pembrokeshire. The managers of a group of schools have resolved to resign because the Education Committee have appointed a lady to a headship. The managers wisely point out that the objection is not to the lady herself, but to the system, and they revolt for principle's sake The lady is eminently qualified. She is a graduate of the Welsh University. But the managers hold that the school is such that a headmaster is necessary, and—here is the point, we think—4 they further think that there are reasons why their wishes in this matter should not be ignored.' That may be; but the Com- mittee is the best judge of that. The revolt of the managers does not really matter. Educa- tion will not suffer; nor is the world likely to come to an end 11
