The campaign for the nationalisation oi "the mines is proceeding vigorously, and if "he general public outside the trade unions j'oes not hear so much of it as those within the fold there are good enough reasons for such restraint as the promoters maintain. These campaigners know very well what ;they want, but they consider that the jpetieval body-of electors is not ripe for ac- ceptance of their schemes. Matters appear irore promising to the revolutionary Labour leaders in the sphere in which they can bring to bear their characteristic and favourite methods of exercising sway. For the outside public the case for the national- isation of the mines is put forward as one to bf decided on its merits and as a detached issue, and the arguments which are kept in prominence ara those which concern the miners only—those which make an appeal, ,deseTving of all respect when it is genuine, on the ground of the dangers of the pits •and bad housing condtions in the mining' ,districts. But Mr. Smillie and his friends are not always discreet. And our readers will remember thfit in the course of the re- ,oent by-election in the Bothwell Division of Lanarkshire, the chief organiser of what is .intended to be the Triple Alliance Dicta- torship of Britain disclosed in plain terms .the fact that the nationalisation of the jtnines is only the first item in a programme -ixlilch includes the nationalisation of the railways and of the land as the immediate sequel. On the subject of the nationalisation of the railways we will say no more than this, fio has been tried in many countries, new ;.and old. It has not been generally success- ful -from the point of view of the travelling jand <the trading publicJPand it has never ..secured or even tended to promote satisfac- tion and contentment among the employees. Men in the service of State railways are just as prcne to industrial unrest as State J rstal .servants. We propose to review very ~bi iefly the most salient points raised by the proposal to nationalise the land. If this :js done, private capital will necessarily be Vanished from any fertilising work upon the soil. Is the national Exchequer to raise the requisite capital for the whole expanse of agricultural land from Land's End to John o' Groats? If so, from what source? The nationalisation agitators seek to win .their campaign by promising all the wor- ikers whom they professedly seek to benefit, shorter and shorter hours of labour and .progressively higher wages. Already the mines and railways, which the war brought under State control in this country, stand as object lessons of the truth that industries so conducted are conducted at a. heavy loss which the taxpayers must make good, and the industrial agitations of the last few months have made it plain that Labour leaders intend to offer the taxpayer no re- lief in pence conditions. Is the taxpayer to shoulder the burden of an uneconomic eys- tem for the land when he is weighted down by-uneconomic mining and railway systems as well as by war debt? The nationalisation of the land involves State control of every farm and small holding in the kingdom. If farmers will not accept the position of subordinate civil servants under Departmental dictation and subject to incessant bureaucratic interfer- ence, farming operations will have to be conducted by the bureaucracy itself, experi- enced or not, and presumably its activities will be directed by Socialist theories. Is this likely to conduce to efficient and suffi- cient food production? Can even Mr. Smillie and his friends believe that it would? Probably they are indifferent about the result. They are revolutionaries, and they went the "social revolution." Nothing else matters to them in comparison with that. And dearth and misery in the homes of the people are their allies. Want and resent- ment beget the revolutionary frenzy. And our extremists are wholly unscrupulous and Ireally skilful in imputing the blame for privation and failure which justly rests on themselves to any and every person who is striving to stop the mischief they are doing. The Talk is:- That it is not true that the end of the world was on VV ednesday as prophesied by an American professor. That in view of the prophesy, a local resi- dent made his will at the beginning of the week! That the rowdyism at the fermers meet- ing at Carmarthen on Saturday did not reflect credit on the disturbers. That a movement is on foot at LIanelly to raise a memorial to the 4th Welsh Regi- ment. What does Carmarthen do? That the Carmarthen borough teachers are in clover, having been granted increases with back pay to April 1st. Look out for the "ca:rrv over. That the effort made at the Carmarthen Borough Education Committee on Tuesday to get the question of teachers' salaries discussed in camera was a short-sighted and feeblemanceuvre. That the lighting of the town is bad enough without having two or three lamps extinguished. That it is not "Give it to Balhe, but "Give it to Hurley." That people going through Spilman-street on Thursday morning thought the end of the world had started. A G.W.R. van com- menced its Way to the antipodes. That only a very thin crust of ground covered the cavity which was opened through the weight of the van. That a prison warder suggested that the cavity was on the route of a subterranean passage leading from the prison (formerly the old Carmarthen Castle) to St. Peter's Church. That is sounds better to suggest that the passage led from the prison to the church than vice versa.

Call.-A-fr. W. S. Griffiths, of the Presby- terian College, has accepted a unanimous call to the pastorate of Bethania Welsh Congre- gational Church at Abertysswg, Mon. Mr. Griffiths, is one of the youngest students at the college and a promising preacher. Old College School.—The College of Pre- ceptors examination was held last week. The centre of this part was the Old College School. Thirty-one candidates sat for certi- ficates. The results will be published on the 20th January, and the certificates for the successful will soon follow. English Baptist Guild. Mr. Percy J. Williams, Carne. gave an address on "Malta" at the above guild on Friday even- ing last The address was very interesting throughout, and much enjoyed by all present. Included in a new list of honours for war services is that of Q.M.S. R. J Owen, R.E., Carmarthen (son of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Owen, Nott-square), who is awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. Accident.—Whilst following his employ- ment on Saturday, Mr. Fred Harries, Parc- rnaen,street, an engine-driver on the Great Western Railway, slipped from the foot- plate of the engine, and received severe JacVtI injuries. He was conveyed to the Inlirmary, where he is progressing favour- ably. United "Cymanfa Ganu." Coun. W. Dunn Williams, G. & L., conducted a very successful united singing festival of all the churches of Cymmer at Hebron Chapel on Sunday. Interesting Subject.—Mr. Joseph Evans read an interesting Welsh paper at Beth- ania Young People's Society on Tuesday evening on Gwasana-eth Griffith Jones. Llanddowror, i Addysg Cymru" ("Griffith Jones' service to Welsh Education"). The pastor, Rev. J. O. Jones, presided.. Poultry Successes.—At Ferndale i'-nj^ry Show on Thursday, the 11th iri--r. Mr. Garnet Lewis, Cambrian-place, r. on a pnze with his Anoona pullet: while at Loughor Show on Saturday, Mr. I. Brrriker won a third prize, and was 'very highly 'om- mended for his pullets in the open (lass Free Church Council.- At a meeting of the Free Church Council on Friday last at the Welsh Wesley an Schoolroom, Ald. John Lewis presiding, it was decided to conduct a week's mission in the town the second week in January, when the ministers of the town will officiate. It was also decided to ask the Rev. Keri Evans, M.A., to give his lecture on the Education Bill at a later date. Concert.—A successful concert, in aid of St. Dunstan's, was given at the Lyric on Sunday evening by the Carmarthen Male Voice Party, conducted by Mr. G. B. Isaac. The solosists were:—Soprano, Miss Annie Davies: contralto, Miss Irene Thomas tenor' Mr. Bryn Jones; baritones, Messrs. W. J. Williams and Jack Thoma.«s. The <w om- panist was Mr. Stanley Isaac. The Lyric was packed. Zenana Mission.—Meetings m connection with the Church of England Zenana Mis- sionary Society have been held during the week. On Sunday afternoon, Miss A. E. Allen, of Cilrhiw, who has worked in the foreign mission field under the Church Missionary Society, addressed a. joint meet- ) ing of the Sunday Schools and Bible Classes of St. Peter's parish. On Monday evening, Miss Allen gave a lecture at St. David's Church Room, which was illustrated by lantern slides, and on Tuesday afternoon she addressed a meeting at St. Peter's Church House. Tea was served at the afternoon meeting. Water Street Y.P.S.-The weekly meet- ing was held on Wednesday evening, the 10th inst.. when the chair was taken by Mrs. Harries, Towy Works, who, in a few well-chosen remarks, introduced the speaker for the evening, the Rev. W. D. Rowlands, who chose for his subject, "The debt of Wales to its villages." A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the speaker for his interesting address. Salvation Ai-niy.-Special services were held in connection with the Salvation Army on Sunday last, when Comandant Tomkins, of the Swansea Headquarters, conducted meetings throughout the day. There were large congregations at each service. C.E.M.S.—The St. Peter's branch of the Church of England Men's Society had its meeting on Monday evening, and devoted an hour or so to Bible study. The Vicar (Rev. B. Parry Griffiths, M.A.) presided. G.F.S. Social.—The members of the St. Peter's branch of the Girls' Friendly Society held a social at the Church Room on Tuesday evening. The Vicar (Rev. B. Parry Griffiths, M.A.), who presided, gave an address. After the tables were cleared an enjoyable time was spent in dancing and games. Miss Parry Griffiths presided at the piano. Bird Successes.—Mr J. W. Johns, Caiman House, Parcmaen-street, has added to his long list of successes with his birds by winning the following prizes at the Ebbw Vale Cage Bird Show on the 10th inst:— First and special for best Norwich Canary in the show, and third and fzhirill prizes for special best adult. Increases.—At a meeting of the Carmar- then Borough Education Committee on Tuesday evening, the following increases were granted to the school cleaners: -Priory- street School and Model School, from 15s. to JB1 per week; Quay-street School, 7s. 6d. to 12s. 6d.; Johnstown School, from 5s. to 7s. 6d.; and St. Mary's Schoo, from 4s. 4d. to 7s. 6d. School Parties.—Parties were held at tht1 County Girls' School on Tuesday and Wed- Tlosday evenings prior to "breaking up" for the Christmas holidays. On Tuesday evening the lower school had their party from 6 to 9 p.m., and on Wednesday even- ing the upper school from 7 to 10 p.m. Games and dancing were indulged in, and the staff and pupils spent a very enjoyable time. Insurance Committee.—At the quarterly meeting of the Carmarthenshire Insurance Committee at Carmarthen on Saturday, Mr. Wm. David, Llanelly (chairman), presiding, a letter was read from Dr. W. D. Owen, Whitland, complaining that the mileage grant is unfairly operative in his case, where his panel patients had increased four times as much as when he took over the practice six years ago.—The Clerk (Mr. J. W. Nicholas) said the Panel Committee were dealing with the matter when a return would be supplied of the distance travelled hy Dr. Owen in visiting insured persons.— It was reported that the term of office of members of the committee which expired on the 31st December, 1919, would be ex- tended to 30th June, 1920.-Ald. Cymmrodorion Eisteddfod.—The annual children's eisteddfod, in connection with the Carmarthen Cymmrodorion, was held at Water-street Schoolroom on Tuesday even- ing, the RCiV. E. U. Thomas presiding. Post Office Proinotion.-ILeai-ty congratu- lations are extended to Mr. David Thomas, overseer at the Carmarthen Post Office, on his promotion to the rank cf superintendent in succession to Mr. W. J. Wilkins, who resigned owing to failing health. The ap- pointment is a very popular one, and has given great satisfaction to the staff in the Carmarthen district, where Mr. Thomas is held in high esteem. Mr. Thomas, who is a native of the district, has been on the post office staff for 25 years, and his promo- tion is well merited. During the years 1911- 1913, Mr. Thomas was employed especially in reorganising rural posts in Carmarthen district, which embraces an extensive area, and as a result all restricted deliveries vere practically abolished without addi- tional expense, and it is said that at that time there was not even a footpath between Llidiadnenog, beyond Gwernogle, and Llan- teg, below Whitland, that Mr. Thomas was not aware of. A tireless worker, he is oi a consistently affable disposition, and is j always ready to oblige. We congratulate « turn heartily on his promotion and wish him every success. Coal Supply.—We believe the public ought to appreciate the efforts made by the Carmarthenshire Coal Company to meet the very trying local conditions which have prevailed recently at Carmarthen in regard to the supply of coal. It may be news to Carmarthen people that in the matter of coal supply the town is far better off than any other town in South Wales. This seems on the face of it an exaggeration when one thinks of the other towns in the Welsh coalfields, but the statement is perfectly true. The proprietors of the Coal Company are themselves colliery owners, and were able to demand an ample supply of coal during the strike. In this way the Company are enabled to guarantee as good services in the future as they have already rendered. It is a curious fact that other coal proprie- tors in towns like Newport, Swansea, and Cardiff have been short of coal owing to the intricacies of the Government control of coal supply. The Carmarthenshire Coal Company appeal to the public to bring in 1 their Christmas orders at once. Mr. Ian Walters, Penllv yn Park, with his usual readiness to support, local sport, has presented to the Carmarthen Thursdays two beautiful footballs. We have been asked by the Auctioneers (Messrs. Lloyd and Thomas) to state that olring to Christmas week, no Marts will be held at Carmarthen on Wednesday, ancf Newcastle-Emlyn on Friday. Messrs. Masters and Co., Ltd., in their two branch shops in this town, -have as excellent stocks of Gents, "and Boys' Cloth- ing, etc., as will be found in any large town. Carmarthen being such a fine centre for business, Messrs. Masters and Co. de- serve hearty support for their contribution to the town's catering Mart—The usual weekly mart was held at Carmarthen on Wednesday. There was a good demand for cows and calves, the trade being better than lait week. Fifty- three were entered and all were sold, with the exception of three, at prices ranging from £ 22 to L54. There was a small entry of store cattle, but those olfered were sold at good prices. Ninety calves were sold, the top price being BT 7s. 6d. The pigs offered found ready buyers, young pigs realising up to 54s.. and older pigs to Ell). Penuel Young People,•• Society.—The first meeting of this soc.it' was held on Monday, 15th inst., when t; Rev. Waldo Lewis, B.A., delivered an able and instruc- tive address on "The challenge that the condition of the world to-day gives to the Christian Church." Following this was a short discussion, in which members tooli part. The meeting was ,Presided over by Mr. J. Jordan Evane. Late Mrs. K. E. Davies.—The funeral of Mrs. K. E. Davies, wife of Mr. Ti oinas Davies, 125, Priory-street (whose death was reported last week), took place on Saturday at New Quay, Cardiganshire. The obse- quies were strictly private. Prior to the departure of the cortege a., 10.30 a.m., a short service was conducted at 125, Priory- street by Rev. B. Parry Griffiths, M.A., I vicar of St. Peter's. At Llanllwchaiarn Church. New Quay, the Vicar ('Rev. Henry ëlils, B.A ) and curate (Rev. A. Ll. Jones, B.AJ officiated. Tenants of the Penrhyn Estate acted as h.,arers at New Quay. Local Weddings THOMAS—GOODWIN. The Rev. L. M. Thomas, of Openshaw, Manchester, son of the late Rev. John 1 homas, Tabernacle, Carmarthen, and oi Mrs. E. M. Thomas, of Newport, and Miss Beatrice Maud Goodwin, only surviv- ing daughter of Mrs. Goodwin and the late iVIr. Price Goodwin, White House, Builth Wells, and grand-daughter of the late Alderman John Powell, Builth Wells, were I married at Tredegarville Baptist Church, Cardiff, on Wednesday. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. T. Thomas, llisca, uncle of the bridegroom, who was assisted by the Revs. J. A. Thomas (brother ol the bridegroom), A. T. Ward (brother-in- law, Gloucester), Principal W. Edwaros (Cardiff), and B. Grey Griffith, B.D. (pastor of Tredegarville). The best man was Mr. R. J. Thomas (brother of die bridegroom), and the bride, who was given away by her cousin (Mr. J. Jarman, Penarth), was attired in heliotrope, and carried a sheaf of lilies. She was attended as bridesmaids by the Misses Blodwen and Vera Thomas (nieces of the bridegroom), who also carried baskets of holly, mistletoe, and flowers. The bride was for many years organist of Builth Wells Memorial Church, from the rnernbers of which she recently received a wallet of Treasury notes, whilst the bridegroom last tSunday terminated 25 years' ministry at Manchester, and in recognition of his ser- vices he received from hit church there a cheque for JBICO and a gold-mounted foun- tain pen. A reception wa.. subsequently held at the Park Hotel. The honeymoon is being spent hi South Wales, after which the bi-idegroom will take up the pastorate of the Baptist Church on Ross-on-Wye. REES-THOMAS. A pretty wedding was solemnised in London on December 12th at St. John's Church, Westminster. The contracting parties were Mr. Daniel D. Rees (of Peter Robinsons, Ltd., Oxford-street aid Regent- street, W.), son of the late Mr. John Rees, Penybont Farm, Abergwili, and Myfanwy, daughter of Mr. Benjamin Thomas, Cothi House, Nantgaredig. The bride's pen-name is Eira Gwyn," and some of her earlier productions in fiction, were published in the "Carmarthen Journal." The marriage was by special license, and the Vicar (the Rev. T. H. Passinore) officiated. The bride, who was given away by her uncle, Mr. II. Shaw, of Knightsb ridge, looked charming in cream panne velvet, trimmed with ermine, with hat to match, and carried a bouquet of carnations and white heather. The bridesmaid was Miss Kitty Shaw, of Man- chester-square, W., who was attired in pale blue cloth trimmed with fur. Mr. Reginald Blacklock acted as best man. After the ceremony, the wedding party, consisting of close friends of the bride and bridegroom, repaired to the Ritz Hotel, where a recep- tion was held. Congratulatory speeches were made by Sir Salter Pyne, the Rov. T. H. Passmore, etc. The newly-wedded pair entrained at, 5.30 p.m. en route for Broad- stairs, where the honeymoon is being spent. The bride's going-away outfit was of chafer blue gaberdine with hat and furs oi akunk. WATTS-JONES. On Tuesday, the wedding took place at Ebenezer Chapel, by the Rev. Orchwy Bowen, of Mr. Wm. L. Watts, second son of Mr. Watts, 31, Lakefi eld-road, Llanelly, and Miss Marian Jones, only daughter of the late Mr. Herbert Jones, 46, King- street, Carmarthen, and of Mrs. Joncts, Minarafon, The Parade, Carmarthen.

Local Obituary MRS. JANE JONES. Mrs. Jane Jones, wife of Mr. Thomas Jones, Bryntirion, Waterloo-terrace, passed away on Monday after a week's illness. Deceased was 52 years of age. Of a quiet disposition, Mrs. Jones will be sadly missed by her many friends. She is a member of Ebenezer Chapel, Abergwili. Great sym- pathy is felt with the bereaved husband and three children. The funeial will take place to day ^Friday) at Ebenezer burial ground. "MAPI PA VI" One of Carmarthen's well-known charac- ters passed away at 1, Penlan Road on the 7th inst., in the person of Denis Oherley, who was known to all as "Mari Davis," He was 85 years öi age, and was able to carry the bag until a fortnight before his death. 11; came ftOOl Ireland when considerably on it- yearly 3nd earned his living by col- lecting for itiri:i;¡æ stores, He was a fluent speaker of the Irish language, and also tpoke English and Welsh volubly when he felt disposed. He acquired his nickname by the habit which he adopted when he first came to Wales of addressing every Welsh woman as "Mari Davis."

Carmarthen Town Council HAPHAZARD WAY OF APPOINTING J.P.'s. A meeting of the Carmarthen Town Council was held on Wednesday night, the Mayor (Rev. Fuller Mills) presiding. A letter was read from the National Work el's' Union stating that the corporation work- men were prepared to accept the increase of 5s. per week offered. With regard to the Borough Advisory Committee which appoint magistrates, a letter was read from the Lord Chancellor's department stating that the present com- mittee was formed in 1911. There was no reason why the committee should not in- clude representatives of the, council. The Mayor said perhaps the time had come when they ought to overhaul the whole thing and see that the committee was one in which they had absolute confidence. Mr. H. S. Holmes-And have some con- trol in it. The Mayor—The method of selecting J.P.'s has always been a haphazard one. When I was on the county council, and had passed through the chair, my name was put on the li-:t sent up to the Lord Chan- cellor. Lord Halsbury was the then Lord Chancellor, and I will tell you a thing that will probably make you laugh. The late Mr. Gwvnne Hughes was the Lord Lieu- tenant of the county at the time, and Lord Hasburv sent him a letter in which this sentence appeared: "We don't want any parsons, preachers, or publicans," and my name was struck out (laughter). Apart f-om myself, I must say that it is a very haphazard way of dealing with responsible individualst who halve served the com- munity. A sub-committee was appointed to go into the question of the Advisory Com- mittee. The council decided to grant a holiday to the corporation workmen on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, and that they should work half a dav on Saturday, 27th inst., and get a full day's pay for it. —

NEW QUAY. Interment was made on Saturday at Llan. llwchaiarn of the mortal remains of Mrs. Kate Elizabeth Davies, wife of Mr. T. Davies, 125, Priory-street, Carmarthen, whose death had taken place on Wednesday of last week. In spite of the inclement weather, a number of people assembled to pay their last tribute to the deceased, who was well-known and highly respected in the. neighbourhood. The Revs. H. Evans and A. Jones officiated. She leaves a husband, two sons (Mr. Edmund Davies and Lieut. 1. T. Davies), and three daughters (Mrs. Sells (Northfleet), Mrs. O. Edmunds Davies, and Miss Clarice Davies. The news came on Saturday that Mrs. Margaret Edwards, wife of Mr. Thomas Edwards, Podre Farm, had passed away at the Aberayron Cottage Hospital. She was removed there on Friday last. An account of the funeral will appear in our next issue. Congratulations to Mr. David Rees Davies, Moelydon, who has just succeeded j in passing the final examination for the B.A. degree.

Bank Managers Shot At ONE OF THEM A CARMARTHEN- SHIRE MAN. FORMERLY AT A CARMARTHEN BANK. The manager of a bank at Leeds was mur- dered on Thursday afternoon, 11th inst., by an armed robber, who attempted to hold up the whole of the b-uik staff. The voene of the criiue was the branch estab- lishment of the Yorkshire Penny Bank. us: as the establishment was closing for the day a stranger entered, and, holding up the otaff with a revolver, ordered them to put up their hands. The manager, Mr. E. P. Oates, refused to obey, and advanced to- wards the intruder, who at once fired. Mr. Oats was shot through the head and instantly killed. A lady clerk and her assistant were locked in a lavatory afterwards by the man, out whether he obtained any money is not yet clear. The assailant took to his heels and, according to the testimony of people in the neighbourhood, was driven rapidly away in a motor-car which had been seen waiting near by. A man named Albert Redfern, who served as an officer during the war, has been arrested near Bristol on sus- picion of being the murderer of Mr. Oates. Another bank outrage occurred on Friday, the circumstances being almost identical with tliow at Leeds the previous day. Happily, however, the manager in this instance, though shot at with a revolver, escaped injury, and the assailant-was over- powered and arrested. The bank in this case was Barclay's Bank, Wood Green, Lon- QUl and the plucky manage* was Mr. F. Edgar Morgan, a native of Gwybfe, Lkil- gadtipk, Cai-J!?wtb§#shi.re. The intruder, a man named Reginald Lock (32), droye up to the bank in a taxi just at closliig tunc, and proceeding to attempt to hold up the staff produced a revolver. Mr. Morgan, the manager, approached him, and the weapon was fired, but the shot missed. A pair of scales was thrown at the assailant and he was felled, and subsequently taJ<en into cus- tody Mr. Morgan, who is little the worse for his experience, is still on the sunny side of forty. His promotion has been rapid. Educated locally and at Llandovery College, he com- menced his career at. the London and Pro- vincial Bank, Carmarthen, and after serving on the staff of the Wood Green Bank, the scene of the shooting affair, he was pro- moted manager of Barclay's, W rexham, over four years ago. His success at the latter place marked him- out for bigger things, and the managership of Wood Green, one of the chief offices of Barclay's, fell to his lot in April of this year. Councillor D. R. Mor- gan, Dinas Powis, and Mr. C. Morgan, Capi- tal and Counties, Ammanford, are brothers. A DRAMATIC NARRATIVE. Interviewed by the London "Daily News," Mr. Morgan said:— The man Lock came to see me a week ago after ringing me up on the 'phone and making, an engagement for 3.30, after we had closed. I told him to tap the window and we had a conversation on business. He wanted certain information, but could not give me all the particulars I wanted. He said he would call again. and rang me up oil Thursday to say he would call the next day and bring a gentleman with him to supply the desired particulars. The engagement \yas again for 3.30, and I was about to leave when he arrived. He had given me the name of Ma*. G. H. Brown, and I asked him to walk into my room. "V.e sat down. He was carrying a long envelope, and when I said, 'Where is the gentleman you were. to bring' with you?' he replied, 'I have all the particulars here,' a-id handed me the envelope. I was just gomg to open it when he handed me a photograph, and said it was the man of whom he was inquiring. I got up and looked at the photograph, and said, Why, I don't know this man. Mr. Brown.' "-Just then I looked up and saw that he was pointing a revolver at mo. It was only a few inches from my nose. I shouted Good God, is that your game? What are vou doing, man?' Then I brought my elbow up quickly, knocked his arm up, and, running low, made for the door, intending to lock him in the room. He was too quick, however, and got out into the office. He shouted, 4 X,' 11 shoot you,' and I said, "Shoot if you dare!" Then I rushed at him and tackled him low, calling to the staff, "Catch him, fel- lows. Don't let him get out.' He jumped on one side, and three of my cashiers, Mr. Lewin, Mr. Bidwood. and Mr. Tilley, jumped the counter to help me. I was on the floor then, and Mr. Lewin picked up a heavy pair of scales and flung them at him hitting him full in the face. He did not fall, however, and the four of us struggled with him to get the revolver from him. He gave us a tough time, but we wrenched the weapon away, and dragged him back to my room Before I tackled him he was backing to the door with the revolver pointed and I followed him up. The force with which the scales were thrown smashed them up, so that the blow was a considerable one. I want to say that my staff were excep- tionally brave, and between us we tied him up with his own rope, ready for the police, who had been sent for. We could find no trace of the bullet."

LLANDYSSUL. Mrs. Howell Davies, organist and pianist, Clifton Terace, has successfully undergone an operation for a serious internal complaint at a Swansea hospital, and is making ex- cetlent progress towards convalescence. A benefit concert was given at Saron on Wednesday last, the artistes being: Soprano, Miss Hannah Williams, Clydach-on-Tawe; contralto. Miss Beatrice Hughes, Swansea; tenor, Mr. Todd Jones, Treorcky; bass, Mr. Myrddin Evans, Llanelly; accompanist, Miss Lizzie Johns, A.L.C.M., Pencader. Mr. T. M. Jones (London City and Midland Bank, Newcastle-Emlyn),, presided. A grand entertainment was given at the Porth Assembly Rooms on Tuesday and Wed- nesday, Dec. 9th and 10th. Heartiest congratulations are extended to the Rev. H. R. Evans, vicar-designate of Broadhampton, on the honour conferred upon him at the Investiture held by his Majesty the King at Buckingham Palace last week, when he received the M.C. won while serving as a lieutenant in the King's Own Regiment in Mesopotamia. The gallant gentleman is the eldest son of Dr. E. R. Evans, Brynawel. The death is announced of the Rev. J. Wesley Morgan, Abercynon, who for four years up to August last, was in charge of the Lampeter Wesleyan Circuit, which in- cluded Llandyssul. He was a native of Dafen, Llanellv. During his ministerial residence here he made himself extremely popular.

LLANSTEPHAN. On Friday evening, 12th inst., Major T. iI. Dowdeswell, D.L.. J.P., presided at Bethel Vestry over a well-attended com- mittee of the proposed Memorial Hall. Several new members were added to the committee, so that every part of the parish may be adequately represented. The hall i intended to commemorate the service ot. the boys from the whole parish, and for the use of the whole parish whenever required, and it was deemed advisable to enlist the sympathy and support of all the parish. The Chair mar,, Messrs. G. Barrett Evans, J.P., C.C.. and J. LI. Richards, D.C., Pant- athro, were appointed to arrange some pre- liminary matters, and the Revs. J. Rowland Thomas, B.A. (vicar), J. John, and D. E. Thomas will also act in addition. Four sites were mentioned as being suitable for the purix>se the committee had in view.
