The Solicitor-General, who conducted the Prosecutions, stated to the Jury, that offences of this nature must be pro- secuted with considerable severity, as tap Importation of Goods of th s description was highly injurious to the Manu- facturers of this Country, and to tfte labouring Persons who are employed therein, and depend upon it for their subsist- ence.; that if one Tradesm&n sold them, others were natu- rally induced to do so too j that they would otherwise lose their custom, as Persons who were prejudiced in: favour of Foreign Articles would frequent that Shop where the Fo- reign Articles were sold, and the c onsequence would be that they who obeyed the L^w wpnia sufi'er by that obedience, and they who violated the law would profft by the violation; that he therefore thought it an obligation upon those who are to protect theiRevenue to put the Law in strict force, in or- der that all Traders may be on thesame footing, and the Bri- tish Manufacturers protected.—And that, for the future, no mitigation whatever would be made in the Penalties tfiat might be strictly incurred-le the above cases, Penalties to a considerable amoiytf were recovered.
