WHAT IS BEFORE US ? "Wisely has it been ordained that no man may know what the morrow will bring forth That ignorance is bliss is, its regards any r, other point, a most fallacious conclusion but as regards that which we are destined to ex- perience, the condition involving evil in other matters becomes to a considerable extent a oood It is well that many are spared a know- fed<>e of the reverses of fortune, the heai trend- ing" bereavements, the dreadful deaths, to- wards which they daily drift; or they would be deprived o.t all heart tor the battle ot lile and every moment would be embittered with agonising reflections. Ignorance of the future prevents despair, and leaves us the perhaps greatest boon, thrice-blessed hope. Heavy as our afflictions may be, we are sustained by a reliance on possibilities. Experience has taught us that the darkest hours come just before day- light, and that reflection somewhat reconciles us to our misfortunes. Hut though meiciiullv spared from foresight of evil to come, we arc all prone to desire that a corner of the ycil may be lifted and we may see what is before us in the shape of good. And though we do not pretend to wield a wand so potent as that of Prospero, and to be able to dispel at once the cloud of gloom which has gathered over Pontypool, we can exercise our faculties of observation, investigation, and deduction as to a matter on which just now all arc anxious, the future fortunes of the town. 1 he result is this. We congratulate our neighbours on there being good prospects of an early arrange- ment of the "dispute between the 'trustees of the Park Estate and the Ebhw Yale Company. The negotiations have a favourable tendency, and it is to be hoped that no hitch mav occur, There are further signs of the times' from which we prognosticate a return of prosperity An enterprising gentleman from iSw«nl 15 treaty for a lease ot lands near Pontypo;;l-road station, with the intention of erecting diereon a charcoal bath forge. As such a business must. if judiciously earned on conduce to the general benefit, all will hope that that which is planned may become a reality. The rail- way people, again, are about to extend and improve the accommodation at Pontypool-road station, and that certainly is an encouraging augury. The Great Western Company are also said to have determined on forthwith carrying out the works of the Pontypool, Caerleon, and Newport Railway, the necessary sanction loi which was obtained several years ago, and which must be of g.cat advantage to the local w rks. With these indications around us, .j >- there is really •niu> cotnihg'' *iot- T-i'tyiKoi. •!k> bulcheis '.lie example oi uis, who. we are told, has been selling gout; bevi at twopence a :.our/l!_ ^ous.y, we think that the town has seen its worst days, and that U LUUir \.j1..1t::t;11UJ.. Matters have not been finally settled, and prudence will, for the present, withhold its sanction from too great confidence that we shall find all our wishes speedily realised.
WHO WAS ST. DAVID?
WHO WAS ST. DAVID? The recent recurrence of this saint's day (March 1st) has led to inquiries about his saintship. We cannot answer them better than by giving the fol- loming from, Chambers' Book of Days" St. David, popularly teimed the titular saint of Wales, is said to have been the son of a prince of Cardiganshire of the ancient regal line of Cunedda Wleuig" some, also, state that lie was the son of Xanthus, son of Ceredig, lord of Ceredigion, and Non, daughter of Gynyr of Caergawh, Pembrokeshire. St David has been invested by his legendary biographers with cx- travagant decoration. But leaving the reis-A.. of fiction, there is no doubt that the valuable services of St David to the British church eu- title him to a very distinguished position in its earlv annals. He is numbered in the Triads with Teilo and Catwjg, as one of thp three canonized saints of Britain.' Giraldus terms him' a mirror and pattern to all, instiuctiug both by word and example, excellent in Lis preaching, but still more so in his works. He was a doctrine to all, a guide to the religi- ous, a life to the poor, a support to orphans, a protection to widows, a father to the fatherless, a rule to monks, and a model tb teachers be- coming all to all, that so he might gain all to G o, I.' To this, bis moral character, St David added a high character for theological learning. St David received his early educatior at Me- nevia, (derived from Main aw, 'a narrow water. frith, or strait), named afterwards Ty Ddewi, David's House,' answering to the present St David's, which was a seminary of learning and nursery of saints. At this place, some years after, he founded a convent in the Vnle of Rlios. The discipline which St David enjoined in this- monastic retreat is represented tS of the most rigorous nature. After the Synod at Brevv, in 519, Duhrieias., or Dyvrig, Archbishop^of Garf loon, and consequently Primate of Wales, signed his see to St David, who removed the archiepiscopal residence to Menevia. the present St Don id's, where he died about the year 544, after having attained a very advanced age. The saint was hu;ied in the cathedral, and a uno.ni- uietit rai-vd t" 1i" memory. It is nf sunple vo.isi.oil. the ovnameu's eons;*tin;• of otio row of four quati\ iKil epe.ui.js « p^- tomb.

THE MARKET TICKET QUESTION.
THE MARKET TICKET QUESTION. The Monmouthshire RaiJway Company hara declined to accede to the request of the Ponty- pool Local Board that market tickets may be issued at Blaenafon for Pontypool at a single faro for the double journey. The announce- ment has revived milch dissafisfactiou hero, and has renewed all that personal feeling which it is to he regretted should ever have arisen. The Company, we understand, uase their refu- sal on the assumption that people who wish to combine busiuess and economy will not waste an extra threepence, and an extra hour in tra- velling, in going to Newport when they can got, to Pontypool for a shilling and in a very short time. This is something to the purport of our remarks in a recent article on the subject, and has the advantage that it presumes the residents in Blaenafon to be actuated by common sense, There is but one objection to it. It does n <t grasp all the bearings of the question, and lea\ unanswered the complaint that the Blaeoaf n people are refused a privilege which is enjoyed by the people of Cwmbran. If the people Blaenafon find it to their advantage, and seems that they do, to atteud PoutypOol ket, the diminution in the firice of the tick r would in all probabilty ensure an amnie cor pensation in inducing a greater uumbe- to tr vel. We dispassionately recommend this -z) the further consideration of the Company, and may add that they may further find it to their advantage to dispel by this concession the anta- gonism which has been excited and which is leading the folks in thiJ neighbourhood to pledge themselves to support to the utmost the opposition line through Caerleon. t,
