MONKY MARKET. .,........--
MONKY MARKET. LONDON, Tucs(fay. The Money Market continues to harden, and there is less capital offariD?. Rates keep firm, ] and were there more 'oiUi\ offering charges would be distinctly higher than they are. As it is, three months' bank bills ue not generally taken under 31 to I per cent. Mouey, until the turn of the year, is worth about 4 per cent., and it is expec- ted on Friday that the banks will charge house at the rate of 5 par cent. per annum. Foara of heavy bullion movements continue to excite tbn market. Paris Cheque Exchange is 22'18! Berlin short, 20*37. Quite as much business was transacted on the Stock Exchange to-day as was expected, con- sidering it is Christmas eve. Acsount begins on Friday, and the fact that markets are disposed to be firm, shows that the bull" feeling is still well pronounced. Although money may be expected to be tighter, there i a no reason to apprehend .1ny difficulty '<Jvsr advances, as stringency can only be transient. There was ¡'gain some inquiry for Home .Rail- ways to-day, and a fair business was dona in American Railways. Consols cl'^fd at 974 to 97ixd fOr" jplivery, and 97 5-16 to 97 7-16 x fur account; 2i per Cpnt. (Childers'), 99* to 99i xd 2 per C^nt. 94j to 95i*xd. Local Loan Stock, 103 to 1032 xd,. Foreign Government Securities hava moved very quietly. International issues were neglected. There was not sufficient doing in theni to fix quotations, and closing prices of the more specu- lative issues scarcely differed from yesterday. Business in Brazilian stocks is rendere'I difficult Just now, because of the conflicting nature of news from Rio, and the fear that troubles may yet crop up. The 1888 Bonds fell 1. Bnenos Ayres Ceduias were weak. Of Home Railways to be purchased on dividend estimates, London and Brighton A Stock has been as high as 164, but closed rather under. The more optimist of specul'' org put tho dividend on this stock as ligb as 8. but probably 8i will be the, maximum. South Eastern A continues to drag, and in heavy JlOlr variations did not exceed i to i. In Scotch stock-! there wasnothing doing. Sheffield Deferred Stock was rather easier. In Canadian Railways there is agaia a distinct want of animation. Grand Trunks were almost entirely neglected. Canadian Pacific Shares were firrcer. United States Railways are certainly attracting more attention. There is a certain irregularity about movements, and the majority of changes to-day have been adverse, but reaction is slight; and meanwhile there is a growing belief that with the New Year speculation in this depart- ment will revive in force. Chicago and Milwaukee and Louisville and Nashville gave way a little on realisations. Mexican (Vera Cruz) Railways were quiet. Pend- ing the publication of traffic, ordinary stock was 1Ir shade firmer. Mexican Central Bonds were steady. Amongst miscellaneous securities, Nitrates were very quiet. Primitiva Shares were a shade better. Gaslight and Coke were drill, and T A Stock, 1 down. Guinness Ordinary receded 2. ( FOOTBALL. LONDON WELSH v PENARTH. The London Welsh journeyed to Pena.rth on Tuesday to do battle with the loctl exponents of the popular winter pastime. Tiey ha.d. unfortunately, to take the field minus thl services of Tom Morgan, who has accompanied his old team I (the Cardiff Quins) on their northern tour, and A. C. J)avies, the international. The Seasiders, on tho other hand, played their strongest team. The teams were as follows :— POSITION. LONDON WELSH. PEN.RTH. Back H. A. K#es H. E. Mtrgan Three-quarter..L. M. Jones G. Rowle! Three-quarter.. E. Spear Three-quarter..Conway ReesR. Garret: Three-quarter. A C Jones" J. Williatis Ha.lf-back .D. H.. Evans T. Hutcliilgs Half-back .A. J. Edwards .F. E. Moore Forward .R. J,. Thomas (capt. )G. Brown Forward W. Thomas .T. White Forward .T. E. Jones .T. Garrett Forward Pooie-Hughes J. Matthews I Forward. W. Daniel. A. Willians Forward.D. G. Davies P. O'Brier Forward C. Bowker A.Mears Forward Green .J. Hayes Referee, Mr W. M. Douglas, Cardiff Matthews opened the ball with a low kitk, which was smartly returned to the centre by Reid. Scrim- maging ensued in the vicinity of "no man's ilnd." and after some loose play Garrettgot off with one olhis noted corkscrews, but the ground so gained was 'ecovered by some good dribbling by the Welshmen, chief of whom were Daniel R, Thomas and W, H. Thomas. The oval getting into the open, was propellid by the Seasiders' forwards up to the Londoner' lines. and Brown, who was going like a racer, kicked the ball dead. H. A. Itees re-startsd, but the effect of his long drop was equalised by an equally fine punt on the Dart ot Mofgan, the home custodian. A. C, Jones received tbs sphere and putting his foot into it he drove it to th) neigh- bourhood of the centre, which was the scene d hostili- ties until Moore, picking up very smartly from tile scrim. mage, carried th? oval to within two or three ya*ls of the line, where he chucked to Garrett, who missec the pass through no fault of his own, for the ball had bcome so greasy as to be most difficult to handle. 'Ibanks to the splendid combined work of the Thomases, Bowker and Poole-Hughes the invaders were driven blCk, but the Penarthites were not to be denied, aid in an incredibly short space of time the game wtS again waged in perilous proximity to the visitors' goal- line. Following a succession of scritnmiges, which were held on the very verge of tie line, Hutcbings transferred to Garrett, and the latter lost what was a certain try by failing to gather He ball. D. G. Davies, Green, and Daniel changed the renue by means of a capital rush t > a little beyond the ?. from whence the play was taken pa,t the equatoial tinM. A free kick, splendidly seconded by the home forwards. enabled them to register another minor. 'le drop- out brought no .relief, and the Wtchers' boys" still pressed their rivals and succeeded in penning them to their own position. In a few minutes another minor was added to the tredit of the home side. The visitors thereafter, until hill time was announced, were quite outclassed at eYery point of the game, this being most apparent in He back divisions. The greasy state of the ball alone pre- vented the homesters from scoring on several ocsasious. On changing ends the Welshmen, now put frirly on their metal, went away with a rush, and for fliHy ten minutes they closely be-ieged the home charters. Daniel, W. H. Thomas, and Evans were now very prominent. Despite their repealed on- slaughts the defence put forth by the hooe men was not destined to be broken down. PlayirS with fine combination, the Penarth fronc contingent at length managed to alter the complexion of Rame, and swept the leather before their roes to mid-Seld, where Evans saved in grand style. Immmdiatelf after- wards Reid received an injury and was compelled to retire. By dint of ruodiIl, the Seasiders again placed the visitors' goal in danger, but Daniel iolieved. with the best dribble of the day to the centre. Again the homesters asserted their superiority, and Williams got within an ace of scoring, when he was brought to earth by "Jones." Receiving the leather from Hutchings, Williams again went off in a hurry, and this time he planted the leather behind the posts, but on the extreme edge of the line. The try was unimproved upon. The drop-out was charged town and bounded over the line. Harry Rees, the visitors' b^ck, however, quickly drove it dead. Forward work of a rather brilliant order was next witnessed, in which the home ups showed to adv;tnta«e as they played together. A loose rush swept the leather across the Rubicon, and half a dozen players at once pounced on it. Out of the melee Tom Hutchings emerged triumphant, thus caining for Penarth their second try. Matthews again failed to convert. Gallantly as the Welshmen tried to repel their opponents they Were unable to drive thpm back. After a series of drii;bles, in which Brown, Williams, and O' .Brien were to the fore, Row/es outdistanced the Londoners, and notched the third try in a favourable position. Matthews essayed, the shot, although a good one and well judged, falling short. The shrill sound of the whistle in a few minutes brought to an end ? splendidly contested game. FINAL SCORE PENARTH «3 tries, 4 minors. LO.NDOIN WELSH .Nil- CARDIFF HARLEQUINS v. MANNINGHAM. Played at Valley Parade, Manningham, on Christmas Day before 6,000 spectators. Both clubs put strong teams into the field. Price kicked off for the visitorg. e A line out was formed at half-way. Fawcett, by a gOOll run and kick, took play to the Welsh 25. Walton made his mark from a kick by W. H. Keepings and Fawcett nearly sent the ball over the bar from that place. The Welsh forwards then reached tho home twenty, five, but Fawcett. by a timely kick, snt it to the centre. The Welsh forwards then got away with a rush, which was well stopped by Toothill. Manninghan responded with passiug and kicking, but the teams seemed pretty evenly matched, and neither gained more than very temporary footing on the other's terri- tory. Eventually some good kicking by the Welsh backs, especially W. H. Keepings, resulted in scrim- maging at the home team s twenty-five. Fawcett missing the ball, it was nearly driven over the JiI1. Brown, however, ran and kicked the ball out of danger, and good passing and kickirg took the game to the centre. Roderick atd Taylor retaliated w.th a splendid bit of dribbling, t, which Brown responded with a kick. The game had now become very fast, and the Welsh goal was soon ia danger, tiie home team bringing Mason out of the scrimmage to counteract the Welsh strength in tfco back department and spoil their passing. From a pass by Walton, Fawcett opened the scoring with a dropped goal. On resuming the Welshmen assumed the offensive, aud a rush by Cullen compelled Ma*, ningham to touch down. Wilkinson and Holmes shortly afterwards shctwod up with a dibble wilich Nicholls stopped cleverly at his own twenty-five. From a kick by this player Fawcett obtained possession directly afterwards and ran over the line. Fawcett took the place kick and just: missed going inside the posts by a few inches. The home team continued tI) have the best of the game for the remainder of the half, but the visitors defended well, Lewis especially rendering valuable service. Half-time was called WltJ\ j 'he score1 MANNINGIIAM .1 goal, 1 try. CARDIFF minor, # After the iinterval, Holmes kicked oti for Manning, ham. Exciting play followed at the centre, which ended in the visitors threatening the Manningbatn j goal. They looked very like scoring when Newton, by 1 a speedy run, took the ball out of danger. Scrim. maging ensued in midway. A number of kicks were exchanged by the opposing backs. Keepings then got I off with the ball, but his career was soon cut short, j and more scrimmaging followed at the centre. The j ball becoming loose, Nicholls obtained possession, and after a smart run kicked, compelling Manningham to I touch down. The visitors now played up capitally, and again threatened the home line, Nicholls once more cloing excellent service. Keepings, Davies, and Lewis, by a series of splendid passes, nearly crossed the line. Directly afterwards Lewis succeeded in 1 getting over, and Taylor just missed an easy kick at goal, sending the ball just beneath the post. Combined play by Price, Davres, and Lewis was nearly successful J in adding another point, but Manningham gradually cleared their lines. Cardiff had a frea kick allowed for off-side play, and W. H. Keepings nearly kicked a uoal. Fawcett ran out with the ball, and for a long time the game was fought in mid-territory. Manningham then 1 b id a look in, but did not score. The weather was favourable, and the ground was in excellent condition- There were a very large number of spectators present. Llanelly kicked off at 12 o'clock, and the game was very fast and exciting throughout. M. It. Chalk made a try, and Morgan Davies converted. The play was then for some timu very even. J. Evaui secured possession of the oval and grounded behind the posts after a clinking rnn, which elicited great enthusiasm and cheers. Davies converted, and shortly after half- time was called. The score was 2 goals and 1 minor. Breathing time over, the play was for some time in tht3 centre, but the Pentre forwards, headed by D. Lewis. drove the ball to the visitors' 25, where the game continued for about ten minutes. The visitors subse- quently recovered their lost ground, and threatened the home goal.
