OLWYN BAY AND COLWYN URBAN COLWYN BAY AND COLWYN URBAN DISTRICT COUNCIL ELECTION, 1909. TO THE ELECTORS OF THE COL- WYN BAY NORTHERN WARD. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, My term of office as one of your five representa- tives being about to expire, I beg to offer myself for re-election, and this I do at the wish of many of the ratepayers in our Ward. In the past I have endeavoured to do my utmost for the whole of the district, and especially for my own Ward. I have attended all the meefings of the Council with very few exceptions, and I think you will find that I have been as faithful as any member of the Council in doing my duty on your behalf. Everything within my power has been done in favour of improving the roads and footpaths in Colwyn Bay and neighbourhood, in the lighting of the town and Dingle, in providing seats for the Woods and East Parade, and in finding work for the local unemployed. Also when the Electric Line extends to Old Colwyn arrangements have been made by the Council to illuminate Abergele Road with electric light. It has been a pleasure to me to do my part to influence the authorities to hold the National Eisteddfod of Wales here next year, and I will exert my efforts in the future in bringing anything of public interest to our locality which is likely to benefit the people. For the last fifteen months I have worked dili- gently for securing public Baths and other amuse- ments which are so much needed to increase the popularity of the place, and sincerely hope that my efforts will shortly be crowned with success. I have not withheld my interest in the working- men, lodging-house keepers, shopkeepers, cabmen, and boatmen. The recent expenses of the Council in connection with the Sewerage Scheme, Promen- ade and Water Schemes, have been so heavy that I could not dare to advocate any other heavy ex- penditure, and for this reason several matters of importance have not been mentioned. Every effort must be made to keep the rates down, so that more residents and visitors may come to the district, and in a few years, by this increase of ratepayers and income, I feel confident we shall be able to reduce the rates considerably, and to usher in brighter days for the inhabitants. I have still great faith in the future of the district in which now for twenty-two years I have resided. If returned again you may rely on my taking the same deep interest in the welfare of Colwyn Bay as I have done in the past, and in all classes of the community. You will bear in mind that five members have to be elected to represent this Ward. I have the honour to be, Ladies and Gentlemen, Your obedient servant, W. HUGHES. African Institute, Colwyn Bay, 13th March, 1909. Voting is to take place from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., on Monday, April 5th. 624
COLWYN BAY AND COLWYN URBAN…
COLWYN BAY AND COLWYN URBAN DISTRICT COUNCIL ELECTION, APRIL 5th, 1909. TO THE ELECTORS OF NORTH WARD. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, At the request of a large number of Electors of the above Ward, I have decided to -allow myself to be nominated as a Candidate for your suffrage at the forthcoming Urban District Council Election. Prosperity of Colwyn Bay.—I trust I am suffi- ciently well-known to you to require no word of introduction. I may say that my business ¡I premises are situated in the North Ward, and that the success of the same depends solely on the pros- perity of Colwyn Bay as a whole, and that of the North Ward in particular, and if elected it would be my duty to do all in my power to secure such I y prosperity. Public Baths.—I am strictly in favour and would support any measure brought forward in the Council for the promotion of Public Baths, for in the absence of such our Invalid Visitors and others are compelled to use the Baths at Rhyl, Llandudno, and other places, to the detriment of Colwyn Bay. I have been a Member of the Town Advertising Association since its formation, and have en- deavoured by its means to serve the interests of the Ratepayers. Extension of the Tramways.—I consider that no time should be lost in the Council coming to an agreement with the Tramway Company as to the widening of the Abergele-road so that the extension to Old Colwyn could be proceeded with at the close of the coming season—not only for the convenience of the Public, but to give employment to a large number of working-men, and thus avoid the terrible privation experienced by them this winter in Colwyn Bay. Colwyn Bay to the Front.-While I am against waste and extravagance in any form, I am not in favour of economy at the cost of efficiency, it being in my opinion essential for a town of the impor- tance of Colwyn Bay to be in the front rank as regards sewerage, good water supply, and well-kept roads. Public Footpaths.—I am of opinion that the Local Authority, in conjunction with the County Council, should take the necessary steps to re- claim all Public Footpaths in the neighbourhood, and put them in repair, so that the Visitors to Colwyn Bay may enjoy some of the most beautiful walks and scenery to be found in North Wales. Sunday Trams.- While not opposed to the running in our large towns of Sundav Trams, by which great numbers of the working classes and others are enabled to get to the open country and derive the benefit of fresh air at a small cost, I am of opinion that it would not be to the interests of Colwyn Bay, where fresh air abounds, to have trams running on Sundays, unless demanded by a majority of the Ratepayers. If by the help of your votes and support you elect me as one of your Representatives, I will endeavour to the best of my ability to serve you faithfully. I beg to remain, Ladies and Gentlemen, Yours obediently, SAMUEL KYFFIJi WILLIAMS. Clock House, Abergele-road, March 17th, 1909. 627

OLWYN BAY AND COLWYN URBAN COLWYN BAY AND COLWYN URBAN DISTRICT COUNCIL ELECTION. FELLOW ELECTORS OF THE NOTRHERN WARD. At the request of a number of Ratepayers, I have decided to allow myself to be nominated for one of the Seats which will become vacant at the expira- tion of the term of office of the present District Council. As a citizen and ratepayer it will be my earnest desire, as it has been in the past, to help forward any movement which has for its object the welfare of our town and community. Whilst I would endeavour to do my duty to the whole district, it would be my special aim to see that the improvements which are needed in the East end of the town are better attended to than in the past. In the matter of Local Government and its Administration I would endeavour to secure that it was carried out in a pure manner, with business- like methods and without fear or favour. I fully realise the responsible position in which I should be placed if elected as one of your repre- sentatives on the Council, and would alwavs strive to justify the trust which had been confided in me. Yours faithfully, J. WILLIAM E. GREENFIELD. Brookfield, Dingle Hill, March 23rd, 1909. Voting will take place on Monday, April 5th, at the new County Buildings, Rhiw Road. 6-zo 630

COLWYN BAY AND COLWYN URBAN DISTRICT COUNCIL. TO THE ELECTORS OF THE SOUTH WARD. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, Having been urged by a number of Ratepayers to offer myself as a Candidate for South Ward, I appeal for your votes in this important Election. I believe that all the Council's business should be dealt with in a businesslike way, particularly the Finances of the town, which, together with the other important questions about to be considered, will demand very careful attention. If elected, I will endeavour to secure that Efficient and Economical Administration which is so essen- tial to the continued progress and prosperity of our town. As to my qualifications, they are well known to you. I have resided at Colwyn Bay for practically fourteen years, and my business has brought me into contact with nearly every householder in the town. As one whose interests are centred here, my one aim is to promote the success of Colwyn Bay as a First-class Visiting and Residential Resort. I am more than ever convinced that, if properly conducted, Colwyn Bay both can and ought to be made one of the Premier Watering-places of the Kingdom. Much could be done to improve Colwyn Bay as a Winter Resort, and every movement or enterprise having that good object in view, should receive all possible encouragement. In particular do we need Turkish and other Baths, whether provided by public or private enterprise. Every possible effort, also, should be made to attract Wealthy Residents, who will be here winter and summer, help to pay the Rates, and assist local trade. Remember that my interests are identical with yours in the welfare of Colwyn Bay as a whole. In conclusion, let me summarise my views by stating that I am in favour of BUSINESS-LIKE METHODS and in FAIR PLAY ALL ROUND. Hoping to be favoured with your Votes on April 5th, 1 beg td remain, Ladies and Gentlemen, SAMUEL JONES, Victoria Buildings. Master Painter. Abergele-road, 17th March, Igog. 529

COLWYN BAY AND COLWYN URBAN DISTRICT COUNCIL ELECTION. TO THE ELECTORS OF THE SOUTHERN WARD. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, At the request of a large number of rate- payers, I have decided to offer myself as a Candidate at the forthcoming Election, as Mr. Charles Reynolds informed me to-day that (much to the 1 egret of many in our town.), he is retiring from the Council. My previous experience on the Council for some years will be invaluable, and being my- self a large Ratepayer in the district, I feel strongly the need of extreme care during the next few years to PREVENT THE RATES BECOMING INTOLERABLE YOUR INTERESTS ARE MINE, and if you con- sider me worthy of your support, please vote for me on Monday, April 5th, at the Council Chambers, Conway-road. And if you again dOl me the honour to elect me as one of your representa- tives, the three years' experience I have had., will, I hope, enable me to be a still more use- ful member of the Council. It has always been my object to promote the best interests of the town, and to. see that all work with which I was connected was carried out as economically as was compatible with efficiency. In the second round the winners of the Wrexham v. Ruabon match will have a bye. The Abergele v. Llandudno match was played at Abergele on Thursday, and the contest excited much interest, from the, fact that the two. clubs were considered about equal in playing strength, and that each was expected to play its strongest possible team. This expec- tation was not, however, realised, the usuafl second and third board players being absent from the Llandudno, ranks, and No-. 3 from those of Abergele.
