Pontygwaith Poitage.I
Pontygwaith Poitage. I The old saying of the oldest inhabitants that Pontygwaith is the centre of music le for the" Rhondda Fach Valley, is no doubt perfectly true. --+- At present, Hermon (Baptist) and Seion (O.M.) are busily ireh/earisitng their re- spective oratorios, "Judaa Maceaboaus and Messiah." The local Male Voice Party, which is three figures strong, is making great pro- I gress, and in a. short time will be seen on the eisteddfodic platform. The local Hockey Team last Saturday travelled to Cowbridge to meet the Grammar School. Here they suffered their third defeat. -+- The team- has still its ground record. since no matches have been played at home. -+- It is rumoured that the tennis court will be, after it is completed, one of the finest in the Valley.

Mid-Rhondda Musings.
Mid-Rhondda Musings. Is there to be a Horse Show in Mid-1 **hondda this year? It looks dark. At rate, we hear the Chamber of decided that they will not promote event. It is a thousand pities that such an ex- cellent show should be dropped because ot the Chamber's misfortune over the ■fiusteddfod last year. We trust that some arrangements will yet be made whereby Mid-Rhondda will • still retain its annual Whit-Monday fix- ture. By the way, what was the reason the Press were excluded from the last meet- ing of the Chamber? We hear that a considerable discussion took place over the Horse Show business. Surely, it would be better that an accu- rate report of the proceedings should be fvl6?! *han that all sorts of rumours should go abroad. "r of commercial icdr i m Tonypandy:. Pentre Pellets.
Pentre Pellets. i re.a(^6rs remember the recent mportant questions about Ruth and uher. It seems that there is: another similar question discussed. Can a "reader" Of^me & Read' with no daylight to matter? If we "read" the Miss" correctly, she'll not" miss" the "Read. I A popular weekly paper of scientific trend recommends the practice of gum- chewing for strengthening the muscles of the jaw. Does this account for the American people's habit of repeating long and tall stories? If so, we trust that some of our own people will be allowed very little chewing gum. --+- A bootshop was opened last week at Pentre, when no less than 300 dulcimers were given to boys and girls on the day of opening. This is the first time we have heard of boots being accorded musical honours."
Ystrad Yaps.
Ystrad Yaps. Who were the four young ladies and two gentlemen who marched down Ystrad Road in single file on a recent Saturday inorning? Were they following the tram- line home, or do they intend joining the « Terriers ? --+- There must be some magnetic attrac- Kt*11 near a certain corner in William At any rate, it seems rather ruIn" at all the inebriates should tnake it their headquarters. They are evidently courting death," for it seems they have a great affinity for the "undertaker." Some of our leading men seem adverse to the Daylight Saving Bill, for they have their ashes put out in the twilight." Rather a bad practice, for were it not for the (gaslight," many would un- doubtedly kick the bucket." Great excitement prevailed in Ystrad Road the other Saturday night while a free fight was in progress. Many of the combatants saw "stars" in profusion, but when they saw the "stripes" they quietly dispersed. --+-- A "copper" with .a "silvery" appear- ance is sometimes worth his weight in gold." -+- When asked for his verse on Sunday, a little lad promptly said, Myfi yw y winwningen (winwydden). The congre- gation had a rare-bit of fun over it. The little lad had probably "burrowed" deeply "hare he found such a verse.
Treherbert Tags.
Treherbert Tags. We start our Tags this week on foot- ball, for we are full of congratulations to Treherbert N.U. on the excellent dis- play against Merthyr on Saturday, when the Rhondda team fairly routed their opponents with the score of 13 points to 3. --+-- Ever since, the general talk at Treher- bert is, Who beat the Kangaroos? Merthyr." Who beat Merthyr? It was a surprise packet, but Duncan showed that it can be dun." People at Treherbert have apparently lost the inclination for self-denial." Perhaps they consider life is too short. -+- Are conductors allowed to drop off the cars to pick flowers which certain damsels throw at them? —♦— If this continues, we should not be sur- prised to see the cars themselves running into hotels and calling for refreshments. We know a young man who always takes electric snuff when riding in a car. I --+-- Much difficulty was experienced by the drivers and others in getting a derailed oar back to position at the terminus on Sunday night. A large crowd gathered and witnessed the sparking" of the electricity. Some were bent on the same sport themselves. The Treherbert Breweries have recently been considerably extended and enlarged. The beer industry is evidently rising." Yeast has a deal to do with this. -+-- For the same reason, many will say that the above is inclined to be rather barmy." But we know it's all froth." "Vat" do you think? Things go up by hops nowadays. We advise all interested to consult our local grocers on the question of What's t the 'raisin' generation coming to." They

Tynewydd Tits.
Tynewydd Tits. We are sorry to hear that the great racing match at JMaenrhoudda has been postponed. One of the intending runners has been through such a severe training, we won- der how he still lives. --+- It seems that his backers," who were determined that he should win, put him to run around the Blaenrhondda. Tip I fourteen times, and afterwards gave him 1 a cold bath in the horses' bosh." --+-- On another occasion they put him ti exercise with tram wheels. Then the; sent him to Pentre to fetch some artieu and come back in an allotted time. Was and come back in an allotted time. Was it brains they sent him for? —« We congratulate the local drape rami prominent Wesleyan that approached the Rev. J. E. Rattenbury last Thursday in Swansea. Treherbert will yet be honoured as the first place in the Rhondda at which the rev. gentleman will preach; Look out, Socialists! We hope the photographs of the bud- ding artists" have come out well. Surely they ought not to need a camera now to take photographs. Why not paint them in water colours? Much more artistic.
Ton Talk.
Ton Talk. The cup-holders defeated their old rivals, Cwmparc, again on Saturday in the semi-final for the South Wales Cup. Now when Ton and Merthyr meet. a splendid struggle should be witnessed. Ton had decidedly hard lines in being defeated by "Sweet Berdar" on Mc; day last. We trust they'll not get sour over it. It is only fair to state that the cham- pions lost the game owing to their half- backs being missing. All supporters will "Grant" this. --+- The other side of the subject, Socialism and the Kingdom of God, was given at the English Congregational Church this week by the Socialist, Mr. Graham, of Huddersfield. Where were the enthu- siastic members of the Lib.-Lab. League? True. there were a few present (some already known to fame) who did not fo get to ply the preacher with questions. A certain class of people regret that there is no sign of a Council election coming on at Ton and Gelli this yea Not that they wish the present worthy members to be ousted! But the reason is obvious. The Coronation Hotel is still waith g to be crowned. The figure asked for i some time ago was £1,000. We wond *>• what would Mr. Carnegie say about it! The burst of sunshine was thorough' appreciated by the inhabitants of T n this week. Some felt like going Woo' ward. .-v ? Measles*, scarlet fever ami diphtheria are rampant in Gelli. Who said that are rampant in Gelli. Who said that Gelli wasn't a healthy place? The children taken to the Workmen's Hall must in future be paid for. Such was the reading of a paper circulated in the district lately. A fine principle to get principal 1
Forth Jottings.I
Forth Jottings. At the meeting of the Cymrner work- men at the Palace last week, the miners' agents were metaphorically termed lambs," meaning that they were in- capable of leading the men. On Saturday evening the metaphor became more obscure, for another gentle- man, in a rapturous peroration, exclaimed I that the agents were sheep" in wolves' clothing. That the Porth Labour Council are capable of dispatching work, and are an energetic body of men, has been abun- dantly proven. Through their instrumentality alone we I have obtained covered tramcars and a reduction of fares for children, and a fairly convenient service for workmen in the early hours of the morning. We desire not to forget Mr. Nesbitt in our comments, for he has—on each occa- sion a deputation has waited upon him- given earnest attention and a serious con- sideration of their request. Having noticed (in the last issue of the Leader") of the fish in Alaska, which, when dried, proves an effective candle, one of our local fish and chip merchants intends having his restaurant lighted up with them. Roars of laughter were evoked at the Buffs' "smoker" at the Vaughan's Arms on Thursday by the spontaneous wit of a local wag. --+-- Councillor W. T. Davies said that he was now being termed by some unkind friends a Capitalist and "Monopolist" "Never mind," extclaimed the witty °,ne> 'tis very evident you are not on the Black List."
---Pontygwaith.
Pontygwaith. We are sorry to record the sudden death of Rowland Morgan, Llanwonno Road, who received fatal injuries on Saturday morning at Tylorstown Pit. The cage came down upon him, and he was crushed severely. He died the same evening. The funeral took place at Llan- wonno Cemetery on Wednesday afternoon, the Rev. J. R. Phillips officiating.
Proposed Cottage Hospital…
Proposed Cottage Hospital for the Upper Rhondda. A short time ago, a proposal was made at one of the meetings of the Tvnybedw Workmen's Lodge that a cottage hospital be established to serve the needs of Upper Rhondda, just as the present cottage hos- pital at Porth has for many years been doing excellent work. This proposal gradually spread to the whole of the Federation lodges from Bodringallt to Treherbert, with the result that a joint meeting of representatives from each lodge was held on Wednesday night last at the Griffin Hotels Pentre, the chair- man being Mr. Isaac Evans, Tynvbedw. After the question had been fully dis- cussed, the matter stood adjourned for a fortnight.
Ystrad.
Ystrad. The aiinuil supper of Court Lily of the Valley" of the Ancient Order of Foresters was held at the Greenfield Hotel, Ystrad-Rhondda. Notwithstand- ing the inclement weather, a goodly num- ber appeared, and' were regaled with an excellent repast provided by the host, Mr. Burnett. A meeting was afterwards held, Dr. Thomas presiding. Musical items were contributed bv Messrs. Tom Royall, Joe Jones and Richard Davies, who thoroughly maintained their reputa- tion. Mr. J. Eastman, with his phono- graph, also proved a source of entertain- ment to the audience. The chief feature of the evening were the presentations to Bros. Jacob Kingdom, Fred Golding and John Collins. The report on the position of the lodge was highly satisfactory, con- sidering the heavy amount of sickness which marked the preceding year. Dr. Thomas also commented on the age of the lodge, which has weathered the storm for 49 years, and has accumulated funds to the amount of JE800. The funeral of Joseph Morgan (58), ostler at Pentre Colliery for over thirteen years, who resided at 137, Ystrad Road, took place on Tuesday, the 9th inst., at Treorchy Ocn etery, Messrs. R. Keen and G. Durnell Primitive Methodist Chapel, Ystrad, officiating. The mourners in- cluded Mrs. Clara Morgan (widow); Miss Maud Morgan (daughter); Masters Geo. and Ivor Morgan (sons); Mrs. Bowen, Leominster (sister); Mrs. Jones, Brecon (sister); Mr. and Mrs. Jones, Hereford (brother-in-law and sister); Mrs. Thomas, Cheltenham (sister-in-law). Floral tributes were sent by the family and friends. The funeral arrangements were conducted by Messrs. Howell Williams and Son, funeral directors, Ystrad-Rhondda.
