Rhyl Town Band's Concert.
Rhyl Town Band's Concert. Another very enjoyable function yesterday evening was the concert given in the Rhyl Town Hall under the auspices of the Rhyl Amateur -urass Band, which is under the able conductor- ship of Mr David Owen. Appropriately enough, the chair was occupied by the president of the band, Mr WJ P Storey, who has just relinquished office as High Sheriff of the county. There was a most appreciative audience, the programme being of a particularly attractive nature. Besides selections by the band, including a splendid rendering of the Welsh fantasia, Llewelyn, several delightful items were given by a specially selected choir of about 60 voices, and a fine selection ef solos was contributed by Miss Bessie Evans (soprano). Miss Nesta Jones (contralto), and Mr J Morris Jones (bass), each of whom was in capital form. Miss Mabel Hughes proved, as usual, an efficient accompanist. During an interval the Chairman, who was accorded a great reception, made a brief speech in the course u w he expressed his delight at the progress the band was making, and trusted that they would be accorded every encouragement. He 1- 1 j 1 nopea max mali concert would become a hardy annual (applause). He also paid a warm tribute to the choir, which Avas enthusiastically endorsed by the audience. The Chairman was heartily thanked for his attendance, on the proposition of Mr F L Rawlins, seconded by Mr Hugh Edwards, the former at the same time announcing that Mr Storey had given another fundsS°me SubijCription 10s to the band The Study of Christian Socialism. tion °ofhtrhrCTful ffathering for the considera- C.M. Sin,—The letter of Ratepayer in your last issue calls attention to an evil which appears to bo lightly thought of by some persons. It is sometimes said that the tendency of Nonconformity is towards disloyalty and law-breaking, and there certainly seems to be ground for such a statement. Nonconformist places of worship are licensed by the State for the exclusive purpose of public worship. They are therefore established by the State, and an Act of Parliament passed in the reign of William IV. exempts them from paying rates, as long as they are used for this purpose only. Any meetings, therefore, that arc held for a secular purpose, and for profit, are an open violation of the law which exempts both Churches and Chapels alike from local rates as long as their use is confined to public religious worship." Political meetings, concerts, &c, cannot by the greatest stretch of imagination be regarded as for religious pur- poses. When held, such action is done at the expense of the general community, and such place of worship becomes liable to be rated. Where does Christian morality come in when the law of the land is openly defied in this way ? ANOTHER RATEPAYER. Startling Fiscal Facts. TO THE EDITOR. SIR,—In looking up points and facts for a speech on the fiscal question, it has struck me that the f 1 /-» In 4- U -& _L_1 • 1 1 1 -r a t)Llu iiiuziti burikincr an(i unansweraoie 1 aave ever seen, and as I have not seen it given in my speech or publication, I send it you herewith:— Total exports of United States, year 1881, 902,000,000 dols. year 1891, 884,000,000 dols. decrease, 2 per cent. Here the McKinley Tariff came into furce. A great meeting was held by the Cobden Club to protest against it, at which Lord Playfair (who, I believe, was president) said If the United States be right in principle and successful in practice, then the whole policy of the United Kingdom is founded upon a gigantic error, aod must lead to our ruin as a commercial nation." In 1901 (ten years after the McKinley Tariff and Lord Playfair's speech) the total exports were 1,488,000,000 dols. increase, 70 per cent. over 1891 In the words of Lord Playfair, then, our policy is founded upon a gigantic error, and muse lead to our ruin as a commercial nation." It is interesting also to note that in 1S91 the value of the United States imports was practically the same as that of the exports, namely,845,000,000 dols., whilst in 1901 it was only 823,000,000 dols a decrease of 3 per cent., against the inu:eas-i of exports of 70 per cent. Exports, therefore, were not dependent upon imports, and must have been due to high Protec- tion. My figures are from Whitaker's Almanack, page 627.—I am, Sir, your obedient servant, P W TULLOCII.
