There was a full house, who thoroughly enjoyed the excellent programme. Their efforts on the various instruments were highly applauded, and dt-servedly for it mattered not whether it was a broom handle or a coal shovel, the music they prodnced was as pure as though it emanciated from a real Strad. As vocalists they were also good, and the whole entertainment was undoubtedly the most finished and complete that has ever been witnessed in the town. MUTUAL IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY.—At the monthly meeting of this society, held on Wednesday, a debate was opened by Mr J. J. Lloyd on "The oppression of the dead hand." A lively discussion took place, The chair was occupied by Mr J. D. Jones, solicitor. ENTEHT AINMENT.-On Friday evening an entertainment was given at the Mission Room, Seotland-street, at which the programme was mainly sustained by juveniles who attend the Mission. The chair was occupied by Mr J. Machno Williams, Gwynfa. Songs were rendered by Catherine Owen, E. Jane Jones, Annie Hughes, Owen Griffiths, T. J. Owen, Blodwen Owen, Annie Jones, Lizzie Williams, T. J. Jones, W. T. Jones, Mr D. Ellis, Miss Thomas (George-street), Miss Edith Roberts (Nant Cottage), and duett by Lizzie Bryers and Meta Williams recitations by Mary Jones, Willie Parry, and Katie Robarts. For reciting a Psalm, the prize was divided between Mary Jones, Phyllis Savin, and Willie Parry The accompaniments were skilfully played by Glynne Jones, Borthwen. SATURDAY EVENING ENTERTAIN- -M-ENTS.-In connection with this mjovement a futther meeting was held on Thursday evening, when Mr. Thomas (National School) was elected chairman of the committeie, M'r. J. M. Wil- HamtSj, Metropoliitan Bank, as Treasurer, and the secretarial duties were given to Mr. R. S. Roberts, Haulfre. The first entertainment was held on Saturday. after but one day's notice. There was a good attendance, and the chair was occupied by Mr. William Hughes, J.P., Chairman of the Council. Mr. Thomas, in in- troducing Mr. Hughes as chairman, said he hoped; that the movement had come to stay, and that much good work might, be the result. There were also present on the platform the Rev. D. C. Davies, Dr. Owen, Dx. Huw Wil- liams, Mr. Thomas, and others. A good pro- gramme followed, ithe artistes being Mrs. Thomas (National School), Miss Agnes Evans, Mr. William.'Hughes, and IMr. Maddocks, whilst Mr. T. F. Hughes provided amusement with gramophone selections. Next Saturday's pro- gramme is in the hands of Messrs. J. M. Wil- liams, T. Latimer Jones, and W. J. Roberts. The accompanist was Mr. A. Morley Jones. CHARGE OF FALSE PRETENCES AT EGLWYSBACH.—At a special Police Court ait Llanrwst on Wednesday, a young domestic ser- vant giving the name of Fanny Jones, and her home as at Colwyn Bay, was brought before Messrs. Isgoed Jones and W. J. Williams charged with obtaining a skirt and blouse of the value of 10s from Sarah Lloyd, London House, Eglwysbach, on false pretences on the 6ffi December ilastt. The prosecutrix (Mrs. Lloyd) said she knlew ithe prisoenr, who had been in service with Mr. David Roberts, Bryn- fron, Eglwysbach. She: visited the shop about six in the evening of the 6th December, and asked witness for a sk1.rt dross for Mrs. Ro- berts, Brynifrom, and stating thait Mr. Roberts would pay for ilt on 'the Monday evening, as he was going to chapel. Witness: gave prisoner two skirts on approval, on the faith of what she ,had said abouit iMs. Roberts. Poisoner brought one: skint back on Saturday morning, sttating that Mrs. Roberts liked the other one which she: had keptt, and she asked for a blouse oilso for Mrs. Roberts. Witness at the request of the prisoner made out a bill, which was the one produced that day.—John William Lloyd, son of the last wtness, corroboraetd.—David Brynfron, said prisoneT was^jin bis .service for a fortnight. He never gave her any authority to purchase the goods in Mrs Lloyd's 'shop. Prisoner asked witness if .there was a draper's shop in Eglwyisbach, and he replied 'thiat there were tiwo. She showed the articles in the house, but did not say that she used his niame. She did not giive him the bill. He only saw the bill on the Monday morning after the prisoner had decamped. His wife found the bill in prisoner's bedroom.—The Chairrnan Did you give her any money during the fort- night?—I gave her is. when engaging her.— Did you know the ,gilrl before engaging her?- No.-So you took her without a character ?-=- v Yes, but her own.—No one: in. Eglwysbach knew her?—No.—Superintendent Wooillam said that the prisoner's father and brother were re. sipeotable working men in Colwyn Bay. This was the first time she had been before magis- trates. There was a s-i-miliar case against her at Glan Conway. He, however, did not wish to press the caSle.-In: reply to the charge, the prisoner, who appeared to be somewhat of an imbecile, pleaded not 'guilty, and said she was quite willing to pay Mrs. Lloyd the money. She was 20 years of age, and her mother died 20 years ago. The Chairman, addressing the prisoner, safid it was a very serious case, and ithey hoped it would be a warning to her. She had left home', and he was afraid she was a bad girl. She mUiSit now turn ovear' a. new leaf, and he wanted a promise from her to that effect. TRAIN DELAYED.—On Wednesday moirn- ing owiirg to the failure of the staff on the train due from Festinilog at 7.32 a.m. the train was delayed for quite an, hour. Several pas- sengers for the Abergele fair were greatly jn- convenienced by the mishap, as were also a few marketers who -,verei bound for Liverpool, and who naturally lost theitr connection. DEATH.—It is with depp regret tbalt we an nounce the, death of Mr. David Williams, of the Manchester Clothing Company, which sad event occurred early on Wednesday morning. The deceased, who was in his 60th year, had carried an a successful draper's establishment in Station,-roiad for some years. He was highly respected as a quielt and 'straightforward busi- ness man, and was a member of Zion C.M. chapel, where he was: a constant worshipper. He leaves- a widow and five ichildren to' mourn his loss. The funeral takes place on, Saturday, at 2.30, at Zion chapel. SOCIALIST FELLOWSIP.—On Thursday evening, at the Central Restaurant, a paper an "The 'municifpalisiation of the milk traffic" was read by IMr. L. P. Davies, Stati,on-road. It was decided that an ,appeal iShould once more be mad.e on behalf of the Christmas dinner far the poor children of Llanrwst. TIOREB LITERARY SOCIETY.—The sub- ject for debate on Monday evening was "Is it by reading or by travelling that the moisft knowledge' is gained?" The travellers were Messrs. Bertie Evans, William Jones, and John Jones, whilst the readier!.} were Messrs. David Daviets, Pelter Mf/fc'calfe, and William Griffith. Others who spoke were Messrs. Idrwial Davies, Arthur Owen, W. H. Roberts, Robert Roberts, E. Davies Jones, and the Rev. Edward Davies. On a vote being taken,, 17 voted for travelling, whilst 21 favoured reading. AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY.—The annual meeting in connection with this Society was held on Tuesday, at the Eagles Hotel, when there were present Messrs. O. Isgoed Jones, J. E. Humphreys, E. Davies Jonies, Owen 'Hughes*, Maurice Williams, Roland (Hughes, Eidwiard Bickers, D. G. Evans, R. R. Owen, John Williams, J. Lloyd Morris, and the secre- tary, Mr. Watling. In .the aIbsence of the Pre- sident and Vice-President, Mr. J. E. Hum- phreys was voted to the chair. The report of the auditor (Mr. P. Mclntyre) showed a balance to the credit of the Society at the close of the ,acoount,s, of ^20 5s. 8d., an (increase on last year's balance of £ 6 i.s. gd. The report was adopted, as well as the secretary's! report. .Several names were submitted for the Working Cammii'ttee. The date of next year's Show was decided upon as August 2ISit. Votes of thanks were accorded to the President, Vice-President, Secretary, and the 'Chairman, and the Auditotr for the good work done on .behalf of the So- ciety. GEIRIONYDD DISTRICT COUNCIL.— A meeting of the Geirionydd Council was held on Tuesday, the Rev. John Gower in the chair. There were also present the Rev J. Ll. Richards, Messrs. R. T. Ellis,, E. W. Roberts, J. Lloyd Morris. D. G. Jones, Evan Williams, and T. J. Roberts; with the Clerk, Mr. R. R. Owen,, and the Surveyor, Mr. R. H. Willijarns.-The Clerk reported that an .appeal had been lodged against the decision in the recent case, G-eiirionydd Council v. Mssrs. Green., timber merchants. The Surveyor re- ported that there was a sewer cover broken at Tefriw by the traction engine, for which it was resolved a hilll .should be sent to the owners of the traction. MARKET.—The Christmas market was held on Tuesday, when there was a fair attendance, .althou.gh the 'supply .did not seem to be nearly as large, as, in the previous year, possibly be- cause of the fact that the day was slightly early to buy in the holiday supplies. MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS.—At the Petty Sessions held on Saturday, before Col. Johnstone, and other justices, James Roberts, Pentre Fe'in, was charged with being drunk and disorderly. Sergeant Breese gaye evidence of the defendant's drunken condition in the village at 10-15 on Satur- day night, November 16th, when he was being assisted home by a friend. He was shouting and swearing, and witness told him to go home quietly when defendant replied Mind your own business." Witness wish such people to know that it was his business to bring them before their worships. A fine of 2s 6d was inflicted. LICENSING COMMITTEE.—At the Petty Sessions, on Saturday, on the motion of Mr L. W. Jelf Petit, seconded by Mr H. Parry, Col. Johnstone, Mr Peter Mc'Intyre, and Mr W. B. Halhed were re- appointed on the Licensing Committee. SCHOOL CONCERT.—Last Friday evening a school concert and prize distribution was held ait the Girls' School, Bettwis-y-Coed, when the 'prizes were distributed by Mrs. Buxton, and an address was delivered by Dr. Priehard, the Chairman of the Managers. There was a large attendance when the concert was opened with an action song entitled "Babyland," after which Katie Jones recited "Nant y My.nydd." A song, "Topsy Turvey," was prettily rendered by four girils, after which Vivienne Miehell .sang "To the Moon" in beautiful manner. The song "Soldiers Gay," by three infants, was well re- ceived, and a hioop drill !by twelve Ig,imls was ■cleverly done. Mrs. Buxton afterwards distri- buted [the prizes for ischool attendance. Broochcls for three years' full attendance were given to Hannah Elgentonwnd Moywen Davies. The second pant of the programme was contri- buted to by A. Jones, Evelyn Jones, Miss Milligan and girls, and Car id wen Owen. The concert was a very successful one, and reflects greait ,credi,t upon the teaching staff for the ex- cellent training of the children. FUNERAL.—On Saturday, the remains of the late Miss Livesey, of Penmaenmawr, andBettws-y- coed (her brother, Mr Livesey, being for some time organist of the St. Mary's Church) were interred in St Michael's Churchyard, a short service being held at St Mary's Church. SOCIAL—On Thursday evening the fortnightly social gathering was held in the Girls School, the host being Mr W. E. Jones, and the hostesses Mrs Prichard and Miss Pullan. Games of various kinds were indulged in, and a competition in naming twelve pieces of music played in quick succession was won by Miss E. J. J. nes.

EGLWYSBACH. THE LATE. DR. DAVIES.-Unirven,al sym- pathy is. felt with the, Rev. H. L. Davies. B.D., our highly esteemed JViicar, in his sad bereave- ment in the loss ocf his talented ison, Dr. T. Glassbrook Daviels, who died suddenly on Tues. day, the 101th linist., at his residence at Mausel- ton, near Swansea. The doctor was taken ill on the previous Thursday, but it was not until Saturday that his illness became serious. On that day he attended a man who had m'eft wiilth an accident, and afterward,s become much worse, and expired as stated iabove. The de- ceased gentleman, who was only 39 years of age, had an exceedingly large practice at Maus- elton, .and was very popular there, being always ready to revnder assistance to anyone in need. About two yeaiis ago he miariiiied a daughter of IlVk. David Glasisibrook Morriston. The remains were laid to rest in Llangyfelach Churchyard last Saturday. Dr. John Davie.s, of Swansea, is a -hr-other of deceasied; another brother, the Rev. H. R. Davies, is curate iat Briton. Ferry while his only sister is. the wife of the Rev. Mr. Davies, of Minera. WEDDING.—'Last Saturday the wedding of Miss Hanson, Liverpool Housei, and 'Mr. Llew- elyn Jones, Llanrwist, to.ok tplace at the fibanr ezer chapel. The bride was given away by her cousin, Mr. Hamson, of Manchester, and was accompanied by a friend from London. Mr David Ellis, Llanrwst, acted as bast man. The ceremo-niy was, performed by the Rev. W. J. Jones, The Villa. PASSED AWAY.—We regret to announce the deaith of Mr. William Wynne, Llindir, which sad event occurred last Friday after a painful illness. The, rema-inis were interred aft the village churchyard on. Wednesday. THE LATE MR. OWEN WILLIAMS.— It is with regrelt that we have to chronicle the death of 'Mr. Owen Williams, which took plaoe at his residence, Nant-y-G.lyn, on Sun- day, the 8th insit. He had Teached the ripe age of 85 years, having been born at Ffrithfan, Llangiernyw, in May, 1822. During the l'ast few weeks he was entirely confined to hiis bed, .and although not enjoying the bast of health for a long while, was nevertheless able to. be about at intervals. Mr. Williams settled down at Eglwysbach in early life, and built for him- self an extensive connection in the boat trade in this district and at Ool.wyn Bay, where he had a branch establishment for several years. He leaves a widow and three children to mourn his loss. Of the: ¡two. daug¡htefls, the elder is the wife of Mr. James Griffiths;, Colwyn Bay, who is a preacher in the C.M. Connexion., the younger is Mrs. J. T. Roberts, who has lived in London for some years. The only surviving ,son is Mir. Owen W.ilililams, A.C.M., who makels, his home wilth his. mother;, and wh)o is welll known in. the "world of song" .through Conway Vale, and who devotes, so much oi his time and brilliant talents, to the furtherance of all worthy objects. The family all have the con- dolence of many friends in their bereavement. Mr. Williams, was admitted to church fellow- ship at Bryndaionyn as for back as the year 1858, and was elected deacon in 1866, in which office he served faithfully and zealously until 1885, when the new chapel (Betlhania) was built in the' village, and on removing there together with (Mr. Roger H ughels, they were both con- firmed in the office to start the new ca UISie there wlhere he remained to the end deep in the re- spelot of the whole, brotherhood. His loss will be keenly felt bOltllí" in the church and in the Sunday school, foir which be dilspllayed great zeal, a;n,d in which he was present the very last Sunday he was able to leave his house. The funeral took place on Thursday last at the Parish Cemetery of St. Martin's which is but a few paces from the deceased's residence. A short service was. held at tbe house, an old and valued friend, the Rev. Thomas Parry, J.P., Colwyn Bay, officiating, at the conclusion of which the rernains were bcmine on the .shoulders of his to-other deaconls to. the church, where the burial service was read by the Rev. David Williams, Rector of Llanyruys, near Den- our respecteo Vicar, i<ev. n. L. juavies, B.D., was not able to officiate, being himself stricken with a great ,sorrow by the sudden and unexpected death of his first-born son, Dr. Tom Davies, who- was. on the threshold of a promis- ing career in Itlhe noble profession of medicine in South Wales. With neighbourly kindness, the Vicar was present at the funeral of Mr. Williams. During an interval in the com- mittal service alt the graveside the Rev. T. Parry delivered' the oration usual at the flmenal of Nonconformists, in, which he' feelingly referred to the long friendship ,that had existed between himself and Mr. Owen Williams, recalling the occasion when he (Mr. Parry) as a l,ad of about 13 years had gone with Mr. Williams and another during a week, might service at Bryndaionyn to be admitted to the "Seiat" for the first time, and afterwards both were admitted members, of the Conway Vale Monthly Meeting at the sarnie time, but for different churches ,that was 41 Yeiars ago. Mr. Parry being then chosen as deacon ait Hyfrydle, Llandudno. The funeral was, one of the largest: .seen, at Eglwysbach, and included the following ministers in addition to those al- ready named :-Revs. T. M. Jonelsi, Colwyn Bay; W. J. Jones (W.), Eglwysbach; J. Tudno Williams, M.A., Denbigh (nephew) and James Griffiths, Colwyn Bay (son-in-law). The ar- rangements were in the hand's of Mr. David Owen, undertaker, and were carried out with every regard to the deceased's wishes in the matter of simplicity.—J. R. H.

David Davies, one of the foresters on the Bryn Eisteddfod es- tate, who received inij-uriss whilst removing .some fallen trees last week, is now able to re- sume his work. DEATH OF MR. WILLIAM ROBERTS.— Aftteir an illness cV five weeks' duration, the death took plaice at his residence of (Mr. Wâil- liam Roberts, C.apel Moriah. House, Glan Con- way, on Friday last. Mr. Roberts was well- known and highly respected in the village. The interment took plaoe on Tuesday at Fiforddlas Cemetery. CHRISTMAS TREE AND SALE OF WORK. —The village of Glan Conway its second to none in the .manntir of its .thoroughness in carry- ing out to a successful issue its functions of a social and entertaining chara.oter. Particulairly SIO, was this the case with the Christmas tree ,and sale of work held yesterday (Wednesday) at the National Schools. The Rector, the Rev. Griffith Williams, is happy in having such a iband of willing lady workers connected with hiis Church of St. Fifmaid, and the function under noticie was tihe spontaneous efforts of the ladies to .raise the sum of about Z-30 for the p,rovision ■of hydraulic motor power for the working of jthie new organ. Hiis Worship the Mayor OIf Conway (Dr. R. A. Priehard) performed the opening ceremony, when he dredar.ed his plea- sure at being prElsrent to help in the furtherance of Church work. In these troublous times in itlhe Church's life it was well that Church- pieople should work Ishoulder to shoulder and show ithe world that they had some "gUlmtion" in theim. The large room looked imposing with a large Christmas trtee kindly given for the occasion! by Mr. C. B. Jones-Mortimer, J.P., of Bryn Eisteddfod, and which was laden and illuminated by kind, friends of the cause. In various parts of the Toom were soimle pretty an,d artistic water-colour figure painitiags alpropois of ,the occasion. The large cliassro,om had been ,convertted into a tfea room and was nicely de- corated, and here a very brisk business was done with the fragrant cup that cheers. A hearty vote of thanks, on the proposal of Mr. Joneis-Moirtimer, was passed to the Mayor for jijis kindness in opening the sale1. BLAENAU FESTINIOG. ACCIDENT.—Mr. Richard Bowfon, of Gr.aigddiu Quarries, met with a very serious .accident on Thursday, whiile iasceniding one of the inclines to the quarry. It seems that in turning into one of the empty trucks, on the side of which he was stittin.g facing ouitwards, he fell raJtheir violently on his back into the truck. THE SLATE TRADE.—The latest news in connection with the slate trade is not encourag- ing. The Carnarvonshire owners have reduced tfhe price again by 5 to 10 per cent., making a total of about 40 per cent. within very recent years. Prices Right. 3136 SELLING WITHOUT T,ICENCE.-At the Bettws-y-Coed Petty Sessions, on Saturday, before Col. Johnstone and other magistrates, Chas. Fruen, of the Hotel Belle Vue, Trefriw, was charged at the instance of the Inland Revenue with selling spirits without a licence. Mr W. H. Darbyshire, Inland Revenue Officer, stationed at Llanrwst, conducted the prosecution, and said that defendant was served with the usual notice of the expiration of the licence before the ioth of October, at which date the license expired. He however, visited the Belle Vue Hotel on the 28th of October, and a purchase was made. He ordered two glasses of whiskey, for whieh he paid eight pence. Defendant pleaded guilty, and said he was under the impression that the license had been taken and paid for by the mortgagees. A fine of 20S and costs was imposed. At the same court Mr O. Lloyd Griffith, Llanrwst, applied for the transfer of the license of the Belle Vue Hotel from Mr Chas. Fruen to Mr Gerrard Carnell, who was in possession of the premises for the mortgagees. DEATH.—We regret to announce the death of Mrs. Ellen Roberts, of Tai Isa', which took place on Thursday, run her 56th year. The de- ceased was a beautiful character, and her de- mise will create a gap in rtihe Little village chapel at Llanrhychwyn which will be difficult to fill. She was at all times ready to dio good, ,an,d the large attendance of mourners at th-ie funeral on Monday was a clear testimony of the great esteem in which tibe deceased was held in the 'district.
