Medical Officer Wanted. rpHE Guardians of the above Union will, at their Meeting to be held on Friday, the 23rd day of August instant, proceod to the Election of a duly qualified MEDICAL OFEICER for the Denbigh Distriot of this Union, comprising the Parishes of Bodfary, Bylchau, Denbigh, Eenllan (Urban), Llnn- nefydd (part of), and Trefnant. Area 21,732. Population 7,899. Candidates must possess the qualifications required by the Orders of the Local Govern- ment Board, and must be conversant with both the English and Welsh languages. Salary 2100 per annum (subject to Statutory deductions under the Poor Law Officers' Superannuation Act, 1906), to include all Medicines and Surgical Appliances (other than Trusses), and extras under Articles 177, 182, and 183 of the Consolidated Order, 1847. The Officer will be required to reside within the District, and otherwise conform to the duties prescribed in the above named Order. The prizes given in connection with the Agricultural Show were paid out in record time this year. They were all distributed bv Tuesday. MOTOR CYCLE TRIALS. The Auto Cycle Club are holding their six days trial for motor cycles this week. The competitors will pass through Denbigh on Wednesday, August 21st. Mr W M Buller, cycle agent, Denbigh, has been appointed to act as "checker" in this district, and will time the competitors as they pass through. SMART ARREST. On Tuesday, at Denbigh fair. from a des- cription received from the Corwen police, Police-constable Williams, Llandyrnog, arrested a man named John Jones, alias Jack Denbigh," of no fixed abode, on a charge of stealing six combs from Bettws, near Corwen. He was handed over to the Corwen police. EXAMINATION SUCCESS. Amongst the local successes achieved by scholars in the recent Oxford Higher Local Examination is that of Enid Grierson, Howell's School, Denbigh, passing most successfully in mathematics, religious knowledge, &c. Also honour certificates, under the new regulations, have been awarded to Mary E Lambe and Gertrude Mulligan, St Mary's Convent, Rhyl. CORRECTION. In condensing our report of the Vale of Clwyd Agricultural Show last week the paragraph relating to the stands of Messrs Day and Sons, Crewe, Limited, animal medicine manufacturers; and Messrs Hewthornes, veterinary specialists, were accidentally mixed up. Messrs Day and Son's stand was in charge of Mr H Lewis Dale, and Messrs Hewthorne's in charge of Mr R M Evans. OTTER HUNT. An Otter hunt has been proceeding during the course of last week and this week, and the sport last week was not very good, but on Monday a most exciting hunt took place. The party started from near Llannerch, and at Glanywern Bridge a large otter was captured weighing 28-lbs. The hunt was considered to be one of most successful ever held. FIRE IN A CHIP SHOP. A fire broke out on Saturday afternoon at Mr J Simon Roberts' chip shop in Chapel- place. The fire brigade was immediately summoned, and before much damage could be done they had the fire under control. A large piece of the weather board and a portion of the roof, however, was destroyed. But for the timely assistance of some willing helpers the fire might have proved serious. ACCIDENT. Mr William Williams, gardener at Dolhyfryd, met with an accident on show-day, in Love- lane. tie was leading a young heifer to the show when the animal became unmanageable and pinned Mr Williams against the wall. Mr Thomas Lloyd, Southsea-terrace, and Mr Evan Evans, carrier, rendered assistance, and removed Mr Williams to Dr Lincoln Roberts' surgery. He was not very seriously injured, and was able to proceed home soon afterwards. SCHOLASTIC SUCCESS. Mr Walter Wheeler, son of Mr Wheeler, builder, Denbigh, has successfully passed his intermediate B.Sc." examination. He is a student of Nottingham University, and re- ceived his earlier education at Denbigh National School and Ruthin Grammar School. He is to be heartily congratulated upon passing this examination at so early a stage in. his educational career, and his many friends wish him continued success. AGAIN REMANDED. On Wednesday, before W D Griffith, Esq. (in the chair), Col Heaton, Mr John Roberts, and Mr J D W Griffith, William Roberts, Bryneglwys, Llansannan, again surrendered to his bail, on a charge ot unlawfully wounding Edwin Jones, Brynaden, Llansannan, by shooting at him with a gun. Defendant was remanded, on bail, for another eight days the injured man not being well enough to appear. It was stated, by Mr A 0 Evans (for the police), that Jones would not be able to attend f(r two or three weeks again. THE ACCIDENT AT THE SHOW. Some idea as to how an accident can be magnified by local gossip can be gathered from the accident which happened to the rider who fell whilst riding Mr Carter's horse in the jumping competition at the Vale of Clwyd Agricultural Show last week. First of all we heard that he had broken three ribs, and finally that he was dead. However, as it happened he was simply conveyed to the Infirmary, from which institution he walked out of in about half-an-hour after he had been there. All that had really happened to him was that he had been winded. THE REV. H. EATON THOMAS' VISIT. The large congregations at St Mary's Church on Sunday were pleased to see the Rev H Eaton Thomas, Llansilin, amongst them once again. He delivered two admirable sermons during the day, one at the English service in the morning and the other at the Welsh service in the evening, which were most acceptable. It will be remembered that he was curate of Denbigh for a number of years, and he received a hearty weloome from his many Denbigh friends. He will officiate at the Church services for the two next Sundays.-We might add that another old friend visited us this week in the person of the Rev Ivor Jones, who paid Denbigh a visit on Wednesday. THE "TWELFTH." In North Wales the day opened under favourable conditions. The covers are well stocked with birds, strong on the wing, and in good condition. There were several shooting parties on the moors in Denbighshire and Merionethshire, and heavy bags were made early in the day. Sir Watkin Williams-Wynn, Col Francis Hayhurst, Sir Arthur Douglas, Mr Middleton, Chirk Castle; Mr Lloyd Edwards, Trevor liall; and Lady Storey, Tantyr Hall, are entertaining shooting parties on the Denbighshire moors, while in Merionethshire Sir Henry Robertson, the Hon Charles Wynn, and Mr Lloyd, of Rhagatt, have psrties.-Oll Wednesday, the 14th inst., Col France- Hayhurst and his party shot over the moors of Bylch Du and killed 109 brace of grouse, 1 hare, and 2 snipe. On Thursday the same party shot again, and killed 68 brace of grouse, 2 hares, 3 plovers, and 2 snipe. Heavy rain both days, birds wildish and inclined to pack, but no disease. COUNTY CRICKET In another column will be found a report of the county match which took place this week, at the Vale of Clwyd cricket ground, between Denbighshire and Carnarvonshire, and which ended in a win for Denbighshire by 83; runs. DENBIGHSHIRE HUSSARS I.Y. A letter has been addressed by the Clerk of Rhyl Urban District Council to Colonel Parry asking if it is likely that the Denbigh Hussars- Imperial Yeomanry are likely to train at Rhyl next year. Colonel Parry has replied in the negative. FIRE BRIGADE DRILL. On Monday night a full muster of the members of the Denbigh Fire Brigade turned, out for drill, under the command of Lieut John Morris Davies. The Brigade tested variou hydrants in the town, and also the hose whicn was used at the Alafowlia stack-fire. THE WEATHER. The changeableness of the weather is ever* past joking about. On Wednesday and Thurs- day we were visited by heavy downpours of rain which caused much damage. There is still a quantity of hay out, and there seems no chance of harvesting it. J ATHLETIC SUCCESS. Mr Alfred Ward, "Free Press" Office). Denbigh, won the high jump for the fifth time In succession this season, at Denbigh Primrose League Sports, Caerwys. Ysceifiog, Ruthin, and Old Uolwyn on Saturday. At the latter place he won a handsome silver-plated butter cooler. A RECORD COUNCIL MEETING. There was quite a record Council meeting yesterday (Thursday). The business was over in less than three parts of an hour, and there were no scenes whatever. There was not a single alderman present, and at one time it looked as though there would not b6 enough councillors present to form a quorum. THE PAGEANT. A meeting of the Executive Committee of the Pageant was held yesterday, Mr P P Pennant, presiding. After considerable discussion it was decided to hold a meetinc, of the General Committee, on Thursday, thelsth. of September, to consider the present financial position of the Pageant, and to finally decide whether it should take place or be abandoned. THE COUNCIL'S DEPUTATION. The deputa- tion consisted of Alderman James Hughes Councillor S T Miller, and the Town Clerko (11; Parry Jones). LITERARY SOCIETY. A special meeting of the Literary and Social Society was held at the Society's Hall on Monday evening, when it was decided to make a presentation to Mr W F Allen, B.A., on his leaving the town. Mr Allen has been a very active member of the Society since its in- ception, and its success has been mainiy due to his efforts. The other business, siieti as the preparation of a syllabus for next session, was referred to another meeting to be held iu the near future. HOSPITAL SATURDAY. The public generally in the town and district will to-morrow (Saturday) have the opportunity of subscribing something towards the Denbigh- shire Infirmary. The ladies will be busy at work with the collecting boxes, and everybody can help if only by a small gift. This year is the centenary year of the Institution, and we hope the collections will form a record, as the Institution is doing excellent work. We trust that all, rich and poor, will do what they can to help to carry on the beneficent work which the Infirmary is doing amongst the sick, and the surgical help afforded to the injured. THE FAIR. There was a splendid attendance at the fair on Tuesday when a large amount of stock changed hands. Messrs Clough & Co. had a good entry of cattle, and although trade was rather slow a grand clearance was made. Amongst the cattle sold were some grand young bullocks from Mrs Lloyd, of Lodge Farm, and Mrs Hooson, Colomendy; also a grand young stock bull from the well-known prize-winning stock of Mr Jones, Cae Gwyn, which fetched the excellent price of R14. The number of sheep and lambs, entered for the sale, were well up to the average, the lambs still remaining at the high price they had been throughout the season.—Messrs Byford and Sheffield also had a good sale of sheep and lambs. MONEY VERSUS HEALTH. At a meeting of the Health Committee of the Wrexham Town Council, on Wednesday, it was proposed that two representatives should be sent to a conference of the authorities of Benbighshire to discuss the proposed erection of a sanatorium for consumptives, near Wrexham. The proposal was defeated, an amflnendment being carried to the effect-that while not opposed to the provision of a sanatorium for the County, the Council did not consider they should take any action, as a local authority, at present. The Mayor (Mr Edward Hughes) was afraid the members of thb Council were placing 2 s. d. in the balance against the health of the people. The refusal to. send representatives, in his opinion, would be a slur upon the good name of the borough of Wrexham.
North Wales Border Brigade.
North Wales Border Brigade. FIELD DAY AT SCARBOROUGH. I Scarborough, Thursday. The 3665 officers and men ot the North Wales Border Volunteer Infantry Brigade who are encamped on Scarborough Race- coarse had their first field day of the week to-day. The 1st Royal Welsh Fusiliers from Wrexham and the 2nd Shropshire Light Infantry from Newport, were the defensive army, and were commanded by Col Wynne Edwards. The attacking force, commanded by Col Howard Maclean, con- sisted of the other three battalions—the 2nd Royal Welsh Fasiliers from Hawarden, the 1st Shropshire Light Infantry from Shrewsbury, and the 1st Hereford Infantry Volunteers. The latter bad with them a fully equipped transport company, which has proved very interesting to visitors to the camp, it being the first to be seen at Scarborough. j The day was very fineo The troops left I camp about half-past seven, and the fight lasted until just after noon. The defend- ing army were ordered to take up a strong position in the woodland and moor to the north of the camp. They were supposed to be a defensive force which had been ordered to retreat from Scarborough to York, but found the railway line broken just beyond Scarborough, and were, there- fore, obliged to take up a defensive position and hold their own as well as they could. The other three battalions ot a force that had landed at Hull and were advancing northwards, and this column was ordered to secure Scarborough. The two forces quickly got into touch, and a keen fight took place, the attack being pushed vigorously home, and the defence ottered was very atnbborn. About noon the cease fire sounded, and the battalions mnrcced back to camp after a very instructive morning's work. Brigadier Dunn was prevented by ill- ness from being at the camp, and the umpires were Acting-Brigadier colonel Scobies, of the 1st Herefords, tt,e Brigade Major, Captain Umfrevill, the transport officer, Captain Cowling, and Col Swayue, and Captain Leather. The camp broke upon Saturday, t!ie men having thoroughly erjoyed themselves. The Denbigh Company arrived homo at 8.15 on Saturday night, lookingAmuch the better for their life in camp.
