CARNARVON AND THE BILL WHAT THE CHURCHES ARE DOING FOR TEMPERANCE. In a great many chapels in NortJi Wales signatures are being obtained to petitions in support of the Licensing Bill, and similar work in opposition to the Bill is being done in the public-houses. There is reason to believe that in manf dis- tricts the opponents of the Bill are far more energetic than its supporters, and it may not be surprising, therefore, to learn that the public-house petitions in Carnarvon have been more extensively signed than the chapel peti- tions. One would have thought that the church members' of the town would have pio- vided an overwhelming majority in favour of the Bill, and they could easily have done so had they only tried. There are between 4,000 and 5,000 church members in Carnarvon, but not one in four has gone to the trouble of put- ting his name to the petition! We may not all believe in the efficacy of petitions aa a method of expressing public opinion, but if it is worth while starting a movement in opposition to the public-house petition, it is certainly worth while giving it all support possible. He says :— "Dear brothers and sisters,;—I should like to say a few words upon leaving the denomina- tion after serving it for fifteen years, lit is hard to say good bye—much harder than some people imagine—but I am under such obliga- tion to the great number of people who have shown me much kindness during a long period that I cannot but write a few words. "I cannot forget the kind welcome always given me; I cannot forget the steady support I received from people whose names will ever remain dear to me I shall cherish pleasant re- collections of Carnarvonshire and Merioneth es- pecially, for I know I have true friends there who have a warm corner for me in their hearts. "I believe Wales is to be t.he scene of my life's work. I fear there are dark days in store for religion in Wales—days which will demand greater unity between the churches—and who knows that some of you may not feel better disposed towards the Church of England be- cause of the fact that she will in future be the spiritual home of one who has received so much kindness at your hands."

An interesting figure on the Holyhead Town Hall platform on Thursdav. WH6 Ch^noeikH' O. L. Williams, of Llanrhydidlad, who is know a I as the "lifeboat parson." He holds the Na- tional Institution's silver medal for lifesaving, and he commanded for many years the local lifeboat, going out in ail weathers to the rescue of distressed eailors. For hi; services to them a large numbo? of sailors 011 the Welsh coast a large numbo? of sailors on the Welsh coast subscribed towards a presentation gold watch and chain, which he priaes greatly. Slater, William Parry, 'Rarddgron, Llanddona, labourer, 24, was charged by In- spector Owen Jones for unlawfully and mali- ciously setting fire to certain gorse and fute* at Rhos, Llaniestyn, near Beaumaris, the pro- perty of Sir R. H. Williams-Bulkeley, Bart. P.S. Richard Thomas, Beaumaris, gave evi- dence to the effect that he charged the accused with the offence, and he admitted striking a match to light his pipe and threw it away, and the gorse took fire. Mr. Robert Thompson, headkeeper, and Hugh Roberts, underkeeper, gave evidence tha.t damage was done, and the are consumed about 14 acres of the gorse, etc., and 'extend- ed within three feet of a large and valuable covert, and the damage was estimated to bet J315. It had come on. to rain heavily, and a keen wind was blowing so I orept to the shelter of a huge boulder and intetMied. lying there till the morning, hoping that a eearch party would find me."

WHAT HE ENDURED. Hahn did not tell of the pain he must have endured that night. (Sleep was out of the ques- tion. He was drenched, to the skin the wind was keen and the cold intense. Add. to this the torture of a "broken limb and innumerablo brakes all over his body, together with the pangs of hunger which began to make them- selves felt, and one can form a faint idea of hie sufferings. The c, Iniv food he had with him waa five little bits of chocolate, but he knew theee would support life for a considerable (period. He kept, a perfectly cool head through it all, and after a wearv night watch he at last eafw the glimmer cif dawn, and thought he might attempt to make the descent. "I had waited long enough," he told our re- presentative, "so I tried to see what I could do tvith my broken leg. I had a walking- stick, and with my penknife I cut it in two. One piece I uæd, as a splint, putting one end of it in my boot and tying the other inside my breedhas at the knee. I was wearing two paire of thick stockings, and by putting the splin-t inside the outer pair I made my leg fairly secure. The other piece of the stick had a carved handle to it. I held it in my right hand, placing the crook around the calf C of my iimjured leg. Then, assuming a fitting posture, I began the downward journey, pro- pelling myself with'my left hand, and holding ■up my broken limb with the curved end «f the waikm-gHsftiok. "You pee how my hand is bruised."

CHOCOLATE FOR FOOD. Hahn held up his hand, which was badly cut on the palm. Of course, he had to exercise extreme care with his injured limib. Every movement was fraught with danger, and every inch of the way had to be traversed most care- fully. He had temporarily stayed the pangs of hunger with a. piece of chocolate, and the pain of propelling himsellf down the stony slope of the mountain made him forget the "inner m-an." Occasionallv he would take a rest, and then hunger would seize him again, but another piece of chocolate would set things right once more. On and on he crawled. The fog lifted, and be thought he, could see some houses in the faT distant valley. He shouted "till he was hoarse, and held up his handker- chief as a signal, but no relief came, and he could do nothing more than resume his tedious journey downwards. The day wore on; tihe mountains were once more enveloped in fog, and darkness made it impossible to proceed any farther. "I had been on the move since six o'clock in the morning," he said, "and it was now eight at night, so I had been crawling on the mountain side for fourteen hours. I was very tired and tried to sleep, but I could not keep my eyes closed for more than ten minutes at a time. The night seemed very long, but day broke again, and I found myself close to a. wall. Not. far away I found a hole made for the sheep, and I got through. Then the fog 3ifted gradtially, and I saw I" was not very far from the hotel. I shouted and held up my handkerchief again, for although it was very lonely where I was lying I could see houses in the distance, I had kept one piece of choco- la/te, but I wanted food badly, so I finished it up there and then. After signalling for a long time the search party which had been sent ouit saw me, and brought me here. I have done a good bit of iinountairt-cltiripinor, said Heirr Hahn, in conclusion, "but this is the woret experience I have ever had.; They tell me that during the fourteen hours X was crawl- ing on the mountain side I travelled over three miles." At Penygowrhyd Hotel Herr Hahn received every attention. The soivices of a trained nurse were requisitioned, and Dr Mills Roberts, of jLlaniberis, was immediately sent for. Herr Hahn is now progressing satisfactorily, though he cannot 'be said to be completely out of dan- cer seeing that in addition to a broken leg he has a very bardly-bruised back, and the suffer- ings he endured for two n.ghts on the mountain eide aTe bound tQ have tr.:O: I" effect. He is gifted with a sound const't uticn, however, and the bracing air of Snowdonia. should also help -to bring about a speedy recovery.

LADY DUNDONALD'S BALL IN LONDON Lady Dundonald, of Gwryeh Castle, Aber- gele, was the chief hostess of Monday night. when she gave a ball for her second daughter, Lady Jean Cochrane at 34, Portman Square. No dinner parties were given either by the hostess or her friends, even 'Lady Grizel Hamil- ton, the married daughter of the house, coming on informally after dinner with her husband, the Master of Belhaven. There was an im- mense gathering of pretty girls, including most of this season's debutantes. Chief among these were Miss Generis Bhilkeley, eldest daughter of Lady Magdalen Bulkeley, and Miss Kathe- nne Cochrane, daughter of Lady Ortrude Cochrane. This was their first ball, and they were generally voted to be among the belles. Another very good-looking girl -was Miss Lou- vinia Knollys, chaperoned by her mother. Lady Kenmare escorted her daughter, Lady Aileen Browne, and Miss Dfa Spencer, her niece, l^ady Mary Dawson caaSe with her mother Lady Dartrey, and the Duchess of Wellington and Katherine Duchess of Westminster were ac- companied by their respective daughters, Lady Eileen Wellesley and Lady Helen Grosvenor. A notable beauty was Lady Cynthia Needham, whose simple white dTess well became her. Lady Rosemary Cairns and Miss Mildred Car- tar were also much admired. The hostess, who is one of our handsomest peeresses, wora a black dress upon which gold and silver embroideries sparkled. Her diamond ornaments were varied with turquoises on the neck and corsage. Lady Jean, in faint blue satin, had a rose in her hair and another at her wai?:, and Lady Marjorie, whose hair was "up" for the first time, was allowed to join the dancers, although she is to remain for an- other year in the schoolroom. After the opera, where many had gone to hear Tetrazzini in "Rigoletto," there was a steady inrush of young married women as well as chaperons. Count and Countess Benckendorff came with their daughter Countess Natalie, and M. and lime, de BiLle (regret at whose early departure from London was generally expressed) were accom- panied by Miss de Bille. Lady Betty Keppel, one of the tallest girls now in town. towered a head above all her contemporaries in the ball room, her beautiful old gold hair adding to her effectiveness. Dancing men were very numer- ous. In addition to Lord Cochrane's messmates in the Guards there were Lord Grimston, Lord Colum Crichton-Stuart, Lord Eliot, Lord O'Hagan, Prince Mirsky, Mr Wyndham, the Marquis de Villalobar, Mr Arthur Brodrick, and Prince Frederick Liclitenstein.

EMPIRE DAY VIEWS OF MR, ISSARD DAVIES AND MR. J. A. PICTON. DISCUSSION AT THE COUNTY EDUCA- TION COMMITTEE. At the Carnarvonshire Education Committee, yesterday, Mr D. P. Williams (chairman) presiding, Mr J. Issard Davies proposed the following resolution: "That in view of the fact that some of the schools of the county on the initiative of the local managers have decided to set aside the 25th instant for inculcating' a love of country, and the duties of citizenship, it is desirable that such a patriotic and praise- worthy movement should be uniform through- out the county." Mr Issard Davies said that it would be within their recollection that three or four years ago he moved a resolution somewhat similar to that he brought to their notice that day. He was then unsuccessful. The movement was in its infancy, and he ventured to think it waa re- jected because it was misunderstood. It was credited at the time with all sorts of sinister designs—it was promoted to foster a spirit of militarism and Jingoism. Now the movement was better understood, and it was shown that it did nothing of these terrible things. He hoped his resolution would meet with a kindlier reception. There surely (continued Mr Davies) can be no objection to inculcating a. love of country and creating in our children a sense of the responsibilities and duties of citizenship (hear, hear). We have heard a great deal of late years about finding out something that will unite in closer union the Anglo-Saxon race of his Majesty's Dominions at home and be- yond the sea. We have heard no end of what is called consolidation of the Empire. All sorts or suggestions have been made. We have heard of such pretty phrases as "the crimson thread of kinship," "the sordid bonds of trade," but all have come to us politically tainted, and are regarded more or less as the patriotic patter of political parties. Here we have a movement that proclaims itself—non-party, non-sectarian, and non-aggressive. Its watchword is "Duty," and its motto "One King, one Flag, one Fleet, and one Empire" (hear, hear). This is gurely a movement that should have a place in th« education of the rising generation of our coun- try. Whatever may be our differences, poli- tical or religious, it is an article of faith we can all subscribe to. I was very much pained the other day as a Welshman to read in a leading article in a leading English newspaper, discussing Mr Haldane's territorial scheme, that. recruiting in Wales was a dead failure, that we were a psalm- singing, contemptible lot without a spark of patriotism in the country, and then it went on to say, which I hope Wales will repudiate, that it nva £ all due to the influence of Noncon- formity. I do not believe it for a moment, and X hope Welsh Nonconformity by joining in this movement will at once repudiate the foul stigma (hear, hear), We may be a psalm-sing- ing lot, but Cromwell's Ironsides were none the less patriotic, and fought none the less bravely because they sang psalms. The old Scotch Covenanters were none the less brave because they sang psalms, and, on the other hand, they were none the less religious because they could fight and fight well (hear, hear). I will never believe that a people whom Milton described as "an old and haughty nation proud in arms" would ever act so ignoble a role as to flinch at the call of country, and whatever may be the glory and greatness of the British Empire, whether won on the field of battle, literature, art and science, Welshmen have taken their part in the struggle, and have every right to share in the glory. All that tihe promoters ot this movement ask is that our children shall be told once a year the story of the British flag, the Union Jack—what it means, how it has added country after country to the Empire, and carried in its folds liberty and freedom wherever it floo.ts--(hear, hear)—that they shall be told that it is 'their duty to hand down what we owe to the energy and enterprise and pluck of our ancestors, to their children in turn, not only unimpaired, but stronger and firmer than they have received it. He did not. ask the Committee to spend a penny on it. He believed every village among the hills of Wales, that, year in, year out, re-echoed the strains of "Hen Wlad fy Nhadau" would require Tie money stimulus to make their patriotism known. He simply asked their imprimatur to the movement to make it uniform through the county (hear; hear). It had been received with enthusiasm in the colonies and at home, 27 counties, and 13,000 schools had taken it up. Mr R. Fisher: What is thereaíJOli for as- sociating this particular day with this motion? Mr J. Issard Davies: The 24th is the Queen's birthday. Dr R. A. Pritchard seconded the mocion. Mr J. A. fPicton said that he could not help feeling some regret that he was not able to support the motion (hear, hear). He regretted because the feeling which animated both the mover and the seconder was so obviously pure and good and so thoroughly patriotic. He did not yield to them for one moment in his senti- ment of patriotism—(hear, hear)—though he thought there wei<e principles of religion and morality which were far greater and grander than those of any local patriotism whatever. In the House of Commons on Tuesday, a simi- lar question was raised, when Mr Asquith de- clined to approve of any compulsory measure being taken on any particular day, though he approved of it where it was done voluntary. Commenting upon this matter the "Westminster Gazette," said: "It is one thing to have these voluntary celebrations, which, so far as they are spontaneous, are wholly to the good it is another to have them by administrative com- mand. We want loyalty to the Empire, but the fewer tests of loyalty we impose by Govern- ment decree, the better it will be for the free- dom and good-will which are the foundations of our Empire. So long as the flag-flying and the flag-saluting represent genuine sentiments, by all means let us have them, but the moment they have the appearance of being ordered by the Imperial Government, virtue is likely to go out of them; and the moment, that not to tly 'the flags and not to salute them is taken as an omission reflecting on loyalty, they may even be a cause of trouble." He heartily agreed with those words. They were moderate and judicious. He could not imagine that Wales was deficient in local patriotism. Welshmen needed no stimulus in that direction. There were objections to the ritualism of flag-flying I and flag-saluting. He was not regarded as very orlhodox-(laughteT),-but he entirely honoured and gloried in the traditions to which he was about to allude. They had been taught by I he Founder of the Christian religion — and cer- tainly His teaching was echoed Dy His Apostles, that the love of man as man, the love of hu- manity, was something far greater than the love of country (hear, hear). He was afraid that this WOUIQ! be obscured if they set up the flag on a particular day and saluted it, and re- minded the children of the bloody battles fought and the numbers that were killed (hear, hear). Mr R. Jones Roberts agreed with Mr Pictcn, and said that there was quite enough ol a spirit of self-preservation without taking a step of the kind navr proposed. Mr R. E. Jones, in opposing the motion, re- marked that it was not difficult to tra-'ft the spirit of Jingoism in Mr Davies's speech and motion. Thev had heard how the faL, t < d I added colony after colony to the Empire. Mr J. Issard Davies: And carried freedom with it. Mr R. E. Jones We ought not to ke pride in brute force. The time for that has ^one by. We, as Welshmen, are indebted for what we have, not to brute force, but tü ille sdf- sacrifice and self-denial of our forefathers. If we mean to do anything let us ppoint a day to kindle a love of country and tester a spirit of self-sacrifice. Mr R. Roberts asked whether, in view of the fact that there was a more friendly feeling among civilized nations, as evidenced by the Franco-British Exhibition, it was necessary to hbld up the flag and create a discordant r, te. They wanted to hear more of arbitration -.i.d less cf a standing army (hear, hear). Mr J. Issard Davies, replying on the discus- sion, said that he was very s^rry that some of the gentlemen who had spoken had taken the attitude they had towards his motion. ANGLESEY FERRY Important Suggestions by Mr Charles Wawn. (To the Editor of the "Herald."). ■Sir,—'At the last meeting of the Carnarvon Town Council there was some allusion to my report of twelve years ago. Tl.e ferry is a most difficult problem, which does not improve with age. We have still the same eh fting sands, and a very modera/te amount of traffic. For the landing on the Anglesey side, there is the choice of three places—Taiyioel, the p-e- sent landing; Barras, for wjv.cii an Act mow expired) was obtained in 1897; and Trefarthen. If you can afford the space, 1 should iike to state what, in my opinion, are the advantages and disadvantages of each. I say nothing of the suggestion of a long pier to the edge of the sandbank opposite Carnarvon, because the cost ( £ 20,000 at least), and the upkeep, would be quite prohibitive not to men 'l¥l the fact that the "edge of the hank" is by no means a fixoo point, for it appea-re to have moved nearly one hundred yards between, the surveys of 1872 and 1892. The present landing at Tajyf.vel is fairly con- venient for access to the principal places in this part of Anglesey—tNewfborough, Dwyran, Bryn- siencyn, etc. It is a short run from Carnar- von, except at low tide, and but for obstruc- tions in the Barras channel, there would be no thought of moving. The idea; of keeping the channel open by dredging is 'by no means a new one. The Trustees of the Harbour have always opposed it, fearing that -by opening a passage for a greater volume of water, the channel might be still further scoured out auto- matically, and eventually become so much en- I larged as seriously to injure the present deep water channel past the town. This was the view held by the lat-e iSir Llewelyn Turner, who was for many years chairman of the Hanbour Trust. I remember his telling me that it was founded on the (unofficial) opinion of, I think, one of the Admiralty surveyors, or at least of some person who at the time was considered .an authority, and who had strongly urged' him to "allow no inteiiference with the back chan- nels." This is no doubt very good and safe advice, but at the same time I think it may be pushed too far, more especially as there ap- pears to The a natural tendency of the sand to- wards; the Anglesey shore and towards the north, as is shewn by the old charts and the present condition of the bankfev I see no danger in counteracting this tendency to some slight extent, by removing the obstructions which have appeared in the Barras end of the channel and clearing it out to a depth of six or seven ifeet at low water. I rather think that this would remove the worst of the shoals, ex- cept, of course, that about the pier itself, but however that may be, I should certainly de- precate any dredging further in the direction of Talyfoel: the idea, of course, being to avoid anything like a through channel. The most central position -for communication wiith the interior—'and if trade is to be en- couraged, the convenience of people using the ferry should ibe one of the first considerations— appears to me to be at Barras. Compared with the present landing, the distance from New- borough iby the present road, would be about a quarter of a mile more, but Iby the road past Tai Cochion (r.ow private) it is less by 200 or 300 yards. It is nearer to Brynsiencyn by the whole length of the present shore road, about three quarters of a mile. At Barras a longer pier would be required than in some places, but as the situation is to some extent sheltered and there is no tgreat strength of tide, it might be of a simpler construction than would be re- quired at Trefarthen. The channel to the northwards would have to be kept open by dredging. The Trefarthen site, about a quarter of a mile north of the flagstaff point, possesses the great advantage of deen water and every pros- pect of keeping it 'for years to come. A pro- perly designed pier would cause no accumula- tion of sand. No doufbt a masonry pier, or one of close timlberwork, would have this effect; but not an open pier on piles, similar say to the Sxed portioot: of the Alber bridge, which would present practically no obstruction to the natural flow of the current. Wind and tide would both be ifelt more here than in the (back channel at IBarras. and, it would probably be adrvisalble to make the pier of an L shape with the sloping portion (the "slip") parallel with the shore, to enable the fooiat to come alongside without having to lay athwart the stream as it does at Talyfoel, and as I think it might safely do at Barras. It might per- haps be worth considering whether a small floating landing-stage, like those at Liverpool, would not be better than a fixed pier-head. There is little doulbt that a. good landing oould be constructed at Trefa-rthen at a moderate cost, seeing that no dredging would have to be provided for. The objectionable features are on the shore-new roads and increased dis- tances. The road from Talyfoel to Barras would have to be continued to the new landing, a distance of about five furlongs either on the shore or in the fields behind and it would probably be found desirable, for the con- venience of Bryneiencyn^ etc. to make a second new road from the ianding, northwards to the Brynsiencyn-ILlanidan road, compared with Talyfoel, the distance from New,borough, Dwyran, etc., would ibe nearly a mile longer, or if the Tai Cochion road be used, something over half a mile. From Brynsiencyn by way of Barras and the new shore road, the distance would be about as great as the present landing but by the second road suggested, it might be reduced to much the same as from Brynsiencyn to Barras. I should like to say a word about the d-redg- irur, which I think we are accustomed to speak of rather too glibly, (but which in a place like this and on so smaH a S'cale would probably be both difficult and expensive. Sand. will of course be deposited continuously, more or lees, in the channel, which will have to be dredged at intervals to keep it open. The vessel should be small, of light draught, and able to take the ground without injury; and it is just possible that one would have to ibe Ibuilt or adapted for the purpose. A suction dredger would' be cheapest and most convenient, but 1 doubt whether it would be able to work on some of the harder ground which, however, might pos- sitbly be got out, if there is not too much of it, with a graib-dredder, such as that used by the Haribour Trust; lout the grab is at the best a very slow and inconvenient tool for the pur- pose. lA bucket-dredger would be most- gener- ally useful, because "it might occasionally be used (by a,rraTLgement) in the harbour and dock. SUNDAY STEAMERS AT MENAI BRIDGE Replying to a Carnarvon minister's remarks, Mr. Benjamin Thomas, Menai Bridge, writes as follows to a daily contemporary :— "The Rev. D. Stanley Jones is reported to have said, in speaking of pleasure steamers which, visited the coast on Sundays, that he marked that the Llandudno and Menai Bridge people attached more importance to the dividends to be earned through the landing of passengers than the sacredness of the Stebbath. The Llandudno people will, no doubt, defend themselves in this matter, but I would ask the favour of your assistance to state the case as it affects the Meitai Bridge people. When the Bill was being prepared to lay before Parlia- ment, it came to the knowledge of some of the Menai Bridge people that there was no clause in the Bill prohibiting Sund,av trading, and some of the women of Menai Bridge took the matter up. with the res-ult that a strong peti- tion, signed by a very large number of the women of Menai Bridge, was presented to the District Council, praying them to insert a ■clause in the Bill to prevent the landing of steamers at the new pier on the Sabbath day. The Council were divided on the matter. How- ever. a resolution was passed that instructions were to be sent to the Parliamentary agents to insert a clause giving the Council discre- tionarv powers; "But when the Bill was made public the clause was rot included: why, or for what rea- son, the neonle who interested themselves in the matter lia-v, utterly failed to find out. nin the matter is ",tin a mystery. I have no doubt the Rev. B. StanJey Jones made the charge in ignorance of the facts above stated;"

MR LLOYD GEORGE CANDIDATE FOR RECTORSHIP OF GLASGOW UNIVERSITY. The nomination of Mr. Lloyd George as the Liberal candidate in place of the late Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman for the Rector- ship of Glasgow University, was announced yesterday at a meeting held under the auspices of the University Liberal Club. The contest will, therefore, be a three-cornered" one, the other candidates being Lord Curzon (Conser- vative), And Mr. J. Keir Hardie, M.P.. (Social- ist). At yesterday's meeting a letter from Mr. Lloyd George was read. It was as fol- lows;- "Will you please convey to the Glasgow University Liberal Club my sincere thanks for the honour they have done me in asking me to become a candidate. for the Lord Rector's Chair of the University. It is with a sincere appreciation of that honour, and with an equally sincere desire to be of use to that great University, that I have determined to accept the invitation, to become a candidate for that position. PRESBYTERIANISM IN NORTH WALES CONFERENCE AT CARNARVON. On Wednesday the English Presbyterian Churches of Anglesey, Carnarvonshire and Den- bighshire, held a conference at Castle-square, Carnarvon, under the presidency of the Rev. David Hughes, M A. The conversation with the officers of the church was led by the Rev. John Edwards. Messrs. James Evans, David Thomas, and T. O. Jones (deacons), with the pastor, related their personal experience, and gave a resume ) of the work of the church. The number of I members are 177, being an increase of 12 as I compared with the previous year. The debt on the chapel is £540, A number of improve- I ments have been brought about lately in the renovation of the building. The church main- tains a native missionary in India, and the agencies of the church at home are very effec- tive. A substantial balance at the bankers was reported, and the port of the ladiesi was mentioned in glowing terms. Votes of sympathy wexe passed with the re- latives of those who had passed away in var- ious parts of the, district since the conference had last met. A special vote of sympathy was passed, on the motion, of the Rev. Henry Davies, Pensiam, seconded by Mr. Jacob Jones, J.P., Rhyl, with the. relatives of the late Rev. John Williams, Wrexham. Allusion was made to the fact that Dr. Eraser, a member of Castle-syuare, was leaving a valuable appointment at home to take up work in* the mission field in India. His zeal and noble sacrifice were much praised, and hope was expressed that both Dr. and Mrs. Fraser, a member of Castle-square, was leaving good work in which they are about to engage. The report of the visitors, Revs. R. Morgan Jones, M.A., and John Edwards, was received in regard to the struggling church at Llan- dudno Junction. The membership was report- ed, to be 34. The debt on the building was £î,200, with 246 interest to be met annually. It, was decided to leave the matter of financial aid in abeyance, and see what action the Monthly Meeting may adopt to assist this church in its battle for existence. The Rev. John Edwards was appointed a delegate to the North Wales Temperance As- sociation. Able papers were read by Mr. R. W. Roberts, J.P., on Christ's use of the Book of Proverbs," and by the Rev. D. J. Williams, B.A., B.D., on the need of more in- terest in foreign missions. The Rev. D. J. Williams, B.A., B.D, Holy- head, moved a resolution in support of the Government Licensing Bill. Thp. motion was -econded by Mr. Jacob Jones, J.P., Rhyl. On being submitted to the gathering, it was unani- mously carried.

CARNARVON BUILDER FINED I Du^MLAjGtBNiG- CORiPlOiRATIOttf BROiPERTY. At a special police court at Carnarvon, this morning, before W. Hamer, Esq., and R. Grif- fith, Esq., Hugh Edwards, builder, Victoria- street, Carnarvon, was charged with malicious- ly doing damage to 40 feet of lead piping, at the. back of Eleanor-street, used to supply the Twthill sewer flushing tank with water. Mr !It, O. Roberts (town clerk) prosecuted on ibehalf of the Corporation. ■Mr Roiberts said that at the back of Mr Butler's house in East Twthill the Corporation had an automatic flushing tank used to flush the drains of the district. The tank was sup- plied with water from the water main in Ed- ward-street by means of a half-inch lead pipe, and it flushed the drain behind Edward-street and Eleanor-street. The defendant was build- ing some houses in the neighbourhood, and he gave instructions to one of his men who hap- pened to come across the pipe to take it up. The man did so, and took the pipe to the de- fendant, who kept it. The Corporation had t. replace the pipe at a cost of £2 Is lOd. Eu Hall, borough surveyor, i>ali6: that he did not receive word from the defendant that the pipe was in his possession. It was important tfoir the tank to be in order. If it was in any way defective the heaJth of the town might ba affected. Hence the reason why he took im- mediate steps to replace the pipe. John Williams, a plumber in the employ of the Corporation, said that the defendant' saw him putting down the new pipe, 43 feet in length, but he said nothing. William Thomas and Hugh Angel also gave evidence. The latter said that about four months ago he received instructions from the defendant to take up the pipe in question. The defendant remarked that the pipe would come handy for him for the new hOlif..es he was going to erect. Crosis-examined: He and the defendant at first thought that the pipe was of no use. Witness afterwards found that the pipe went into a manhole. J Jones, a Corporation employee, related a conversation he had with defendant the day after the new pipe was put down. The de- fendant remarked that it was very strange that anyone should have taken up the pipe. Sergt. Guest said that the defendant, when spoken to, sa.id that he had the pipe in the house. He added that Angel first came across it, and, thinking it was oî. no use, he instruct* ed Angel to take it up. The defendant, who was not represented, said that in the course of building the new houses in Twthill a new cart-road had to be made, and whilst this work was being carried out Angel came across the pipe. He was of opin- j ion that the pipe had boon, in the ground for years, and that it was of no use to anybody. 1 He, therefore, thought it was better for him to take it up. Had he not done so the pipe would have been damaged by carts. Further, the pipe waa on his ground. Cross-examined: After receiving the sum- mons he wrote to the borough surveyor, say- ing that he was prepared to pay for the pipe. The defendant was fined JB5, including rhe the cost of the pipe.
