THE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF NORTH WALES: UNIVERSITY SUCCESSES.—The students of the University College of North Wul-s (Bangor) were very successful at the recent B.A. and B.Sc. examinations of the University of London. LIVERPOOL WELSH NATIONAL SOCIETY AND EDUCATION.—The Council of the Liverpool Welsh National Society, of which Lord Mostyn is president, have just voted a sum of ten guineas to the funds of the North Wales Scholarship Association, which is an organisa- tion for enabling clever boys and girls from the elementary schools by means of scholarships to enter the intermediate and grammar schools. On Wednesday evening, the Carnarvon Social Club gave a musical evening, and devoted the proceeds to thR friends of the North Wales Scholarship Association in recognition of its services to the cause of education in North Wales. NORTH WALKS ASYLUM.—Some 255 applica- tions have been received for the office of clerk to the governors and clerk and steward to the indfctution, in succession to the late Mr. John Robinson, the salary being £200 a year, resi- dence, gas, coal, washing, and provisions at contract prices. From this large number eight have been selected from which to make the final choice, namely: Messrs. Roscoe (assistant clerk) G. F. Arnold. CARNARVON BOROUGH POLICE COURT.— Monday. Before G. R. Rees. Esq., 0. Thomas, Esq., and Richard Thomas, Esq., Robert Wil- liams. Llanfair Arms, Northgate-street, Car- narvon, was charged with opening, on Sunday, • the 28th ult., in contravention of the Sunday Closing Act, and James Williams, a sailor, from Holyhead, was summoned for being on licensed premises during illegal hours.—Deputy Chief- constable prosecuted, and Mr. H. 'Lloyd Carter, solicitor, defended.—The hench dismissed both cases. Mr. Carter applied for the transfer of the license of the Victoria Vaults, Palace-street, from Jane Hughes to Francis Robinson.—The police objected, and the bench refuse1 the application. Air. Carter also applied for the transfer of the license of the Three Crowns, Bangor-street, from Joseph Woolridge to William Young.—The application was granted. DICKSON'S, CHESTER.—We have just received the newly-published catalogue of Forest Trees and Ornamental Trees, Evergreens, &c. issued by the old-established firms of the Dicksons, of Chester (now united as Dicksons Limited"), and find it a most comprehensive list of the extensive stock of a large establishment, as well as a valuable handbook to the forester and planter. There are tables and diagrams giving special matters, and an interesting feature of catalogue is found in the fact that there are special list of suitable plants for town and smoky districts"—"for coppice, hop-poles, &c." —" for covers and underwood"— for planting near the sea coast"—" for winter beading and window boxes," &c., &c. Having branch nurseries in Wales (one of which is 1000 feet above the sea level) the firm has exceptional advantages for supplying sea-coast and other plants thoroughly acclimatised, and likely there- fore to be so much more satisfactory than those grown inland and in positions closely sheltered. NORTH WALES TEMPERANCE ASSOCIATION. A meeting of the executive was held at Car- narvon on Wednesday, when the Rev, John Evans (Bangor) was elected chairman for the year in succession to the Rev. L. Williams (Bont- newydd), to whom a vote of thanks was passed, It was decided to follow up the plebiscite of householders on the liquor traffic, and to call upon friends in all parts of North Wales to assist in carrying it out as early as possible. The secretary (the Rev. Eiddon Jones) was instructed to communicate with the North Wales Liberal Federation, requesting that prominence should be given in their programme to the question of direct veto, and to communicate with the United Kingdom Alliance with reference to test questions for candidates for County Boards. A sub-committee was appointed to assist and advise in opposing licenses, and if was resolved to call further attention to Temperance Sunday —the 25th instant—urging that opportunities be given for the signing of the pledge on that day, the bringing of the question before Sunday Schools, the starting of temperance societies in places where none exist, and appealing for a collection where none was made. FREEMASONRY IN ANGLESEY. The annual installation of the W.M. of the lodge of Saint Eleth, No. 1488, took place last week. This year the high honour of being W.M. fell to the lot of Bro. THR AFFAIRS OF EDWIN ELLIS, ARTIST, LATE OF CONWAY.—At the London Bankruptcy Court, an application was made to Mr. Registrar Brougham to grant this bankrupt his order of discharge.—Mr. Howell, on behalf of the official receiver, reported that the bankrupt petitioned the court in November, 1837, he being described as late of Deganway, Conway, North Wales, flince of 10, North-crescent, Bedford-square, London, artist; that accounts had been filed showing gross debts £ 1642 6s. Id., of which £35:3 17s. 7d. is unsecured, and assets £ï36 16s., which realised £85 Is. ö1.; that a first and final dividend of Is. 9d. in the pound had been de- clared; that the bankrupt had considerably over-estimated his assets, which consisted of pictures, two of which, valued at £3.50, had been sold and had realised £6;") 10s., and the surplus from pictures and sketches estimated to produce £361 16s., had only realised £6 4s. 6d.; that the bankrupt had stated that early in 1886 his household furniture at Conway was sold by the vendors thereof under a bill of sale, since which time he had lived in London; that the bankrupt attributed his failure to pressure by Creditors, to seizure and forced sale of certain of his pictures, fwd 10 inability to realise others, and to his expenses having been in excess of the receipts from his profession; that the bankrupt had defended an action brought against him to recover £55 lIs. and costs on the ground that he had not the money to pay that judgment was given against him and the official receiver thought the bankrupt had put the creditors to unnecessary expense by a frivolous and vexa- tious defence.- -His Honour was of opinion that the offence was proved, and suspended the order at discharge for twelve months. The secretary of the British and Foreign Bible 1 Society has just recived £400 from the Anglesey Auxiliary.. A meeting of clergy under the Pluralities Amendment Act w&s held on Tuesday, at the Chapter Room of Bangor Cathedral, under the chairmanship of Archdeacon Pryce. The Rev. D. W. Thomas, M.A., rector of St. Ann's, Bangor, was appointed commissioner for three years. GREAT RABBIT EPIDEMIC IN CHESTER.—An extraordinary disease, says a correspondent, has broken out among the rabbits on tne extensive estate of the Marquis of Cholmondeley, in Cheshire. The rabbits commenccd to die a short time back, and the disease has spread with such rapidity that it threatens to exterminate :them in the park, where the decimation is remarkable. CARNARVON COUNTY MAGISTRATES' COURT. —On Saturday, before Captain W. Wynn Griffith, J. Menzies, Esq., J. Robinson, Esq., George Farren, Esq., Dr. Taylor Morgan, D. p. Williams, Esq., and Dr. Roberts, Robert Evans, (Talysarn), J. Morgan Jones, and Edward Morgan were ordered to pay costs for drunken- ness.—For assaulting two bailiffs Richard Jones, quarryman, Talysarn, was fined 10s. and costs. DEATH OF CANON GRIFFITH.—It is with regret that we announce the death of the Rev. George Griffith, B.D., Canon Residentary of Bangor Cathedral, which occurred at Machynlleth on Wednesday evening, last week. Canon Griffith, who was in his 72nd year, had been ill for many months, and unable to perform his duties at Bangor and Machynlleth. The funeral, which was a public one, took place on Tuesday afternoon. SUICIDE AT LLANBERIS.—On Saturday, Mr. J. H. Roberts, coroner, and a number of jurymen held an inquest upon the body of John Mathew Roberts, quarryman, Rallt Goch, aged 40 years. It appeared that the deceased was in a despondent state of mind, and at six o'clock on Friday morning he left home for his work. At night, finding that he had not returned, his wife became alarmed, and on making inquiries it was ascertained that he had not been at work at all that day, A search was then made, and his body was discovered in a small pool not far from his home and in an opposite direction to his place of work.—A ver- dict to the effect that deceased committed suicide whilst in a state of temporary insanity was. returned. PROPOSED AMALGAMATION OF WXLSH RAIL- WAYS.—It is stated that in the next session of Parliament a private bill will be promoted for the purpose of enabling all the Welsh railways to amalgamate for the management of their various systems, and so render the communica- tions of the Principality more efficient than they can possibly be under divided and conflicting control. When the Dee Bridge has been com- pleted (probably by the middle of June next), there will be established through communica- tion between Lancashire and Yorkshire with the Welsh Railways, and in order to perfect the im- proved railway facilities thus afforded, it is deemed highly desirable and expedient that the existing Welsh lines should be amalgamated under one direction. The usual notices of the bill for amalgamation, which will necessarily be permissive in its character, will be published before the end of the present month. REPORTKD SCIIEMK Fort NEW DOCKS ON THE DEE.—It is reported that meetings of landowners, shipowners, and traders interested in the navi- gation of the river Dee, together with the traffic manager of the London and North-Western Railway Company, Mr. T. Hecshaw, of Chester, and Mr. Smith, engineer of Bangor (both of the London and North-Western Railway), have been held to consider a scheme for establishing deep docks at Mostyn, at the mouth of the Dee. Lord Mostyn, who is deeply interested in the scheme, presided over the conferences. The site for the d,1ck., whieh adjoins Mostyn Quay, was carefully examined by the party in the light of plans and sections supplied by Mr. H. T, Whalley, of Chester, and it was pointed out that the docks could be made at a comparatively small expense, as the boundaries are already in exis- tence, and all that will be required, according to Mr. Whalley, is a pair of dock gates, and a quantity of dredging and staging. At the meeting it was decided to apply for an Act of Parliament to carry out the scheme. The North- Western Railway officials expressed themselves favourable to the scheme, and consented to quote specially low rates for the traffic to and from the docks. CARNARVONSHIRE CONSTITUTIONAL AS- SOCIATION.—On Saturday, a meeting of the Boroughs Executive Committee of this Associa- tion was Iheld in the Assembly-room of the Carnarvon Workingmen's Conservative Club. Mr. Richard Thomas, J.P., presided, there being also present Col. the Hon. W. E. Sackville West, Captain X. P. Stewart, Captain Robert Lloyd, Mr. J. Issard Davies, Messrs. H. Lloyd Carter, R. Newton, John Ethall, William Jones, and J. W. Roberts (Bangor). and George Owen (general secretary). M r. J. Issard Davies, M.A., and Mr. T. E. Harris, J.P., were elected representatives to the Welsh provincial union for the coming year. The general secretary submitted a draf; report, which was adopted, and ordered to be read at the annual meeting of the association to be held at Bangor in January. With regard to the County Council elections, the following resolution was unanimously agreed to—" That in the opinion of this committee, it would be greatly to the benefit of the new County Councils, if the forthcoming elections in connection with the same were not contested on political lines, and the committee greatly regrets that the members of the Radicel pnrty have expressed their inten- tion of contesting the elections politically throughout the county and boroughs." TRAVELS IN WALES IN THE 18TH CENTURY.— The following extracts are taken from The Travels througb;Englandof Dr. Richard Pococke, successively Bishop of Meath and of Ossory during 1750, 1751, and later years,"—edited by James Joel Cartwright, M.A.^F.S. Treasurer of tbe Camden Society, and published in 1838. In a letter to his mother, printed in the preface, p. ii., and dated Holyhead, July 13th,173-1, Dr. Pococke says:—I writ to you from Chester on the 9th, the day we got there the 10th we set out for Holyhead stop'd at Holywell, din'd at Rithlaud, and lay at Aberconway. 11th we dined at Beaumorris, a way I had never been before—a little clean town: Ld. Buckleys seat close to it. a fine situation and pleasant gardens on the side of the hill; we saw the house and gardens, and a gentleman had us into the cellar and gave us beer and wine There are 32 hogsheads of ale on one side, and 32 of beer on torher good stables, &c. My lord and family are at his ladie's grandmothers in Merionethshire; the lady is an heiress of the name of Williams. The following is an extract from Dr. Pococke's account of a subsequent tour in 1736: —I landed at Holytiead on the 25 th of April, 1736. The first place we came to was Bodedar, six miles when the strind is passable; it is eight miles when it is not. The church, and two others ne r, belong to Jesus College, and s does the church at the Head. A mile or two o this side of Llangeveny I passed very uear th house where Owen Tudor was born, and a little Further by an almshouse for ten poor persons, who have £ 5 a year each, if I mistake not, five men and five women. 26th. We crossed over the Conway out of Carnarvonshire, and came into Denbigh, where are remains of a strong castle on a hill. The church is near it, and near the old church is the shell of a new one, long built but not covered 'tis but a small town. 0 CARNARVON BOARD OF GUARDIANS.—SATUR- DAY.—Present: Messrs. Thomas (relieving officer) called attention to the casp of a young man named William Henry Hope, for whose benefit a concert had recently been held. The receipts amounted to .£30, and the expenses to £8. A few weeks ago the case was brought to the notice of the board, and the relief was dis- continued. It should be stated that Hope did not receive the whole money, which was held by Mr. Charles A. Jones, who handed it over in instalments to help Hope. Since the case was before the board, he (Mr. Thomas) had been charged by Mr. George Owen with stopping the relief because Hope was a Conservative, and Mr. Owen said it was a mean. Radical trick." He (Mr. Thomas) had before been confronted with a similar remark by Mr. Robinson, and he wished to give the assertions an unqualified denial. He took notice of any person's politics whilst endeavouring to discharge his duties. The question was could the guardians grant relief to a man who was possessed of .£22 P—The Chair- man (jocularly): Well, you must not bring politics in in this way (laughter).—Mr. W. j. Williams The evil of it is, Dr. John Williams, who has signed the certificate, is a Liberal (laughter).—It was then unanimously decided to grant Hope 2s. per week.—The porter's salary was raised from 2s. to 6s. a week.—A letter was read from Mr. W. Brymer thanking the board for its vote ot sympathy with him in his illness. —On the motion of Mr. Hugh Thomas, a vote of, condolence was passed with the family of the' late Lord Newborough. The Canon Howell, B.D., of Wrexham, has undertaken to write the life of his friend, Dr. James (Dyfed). Mr. Norman M'Corquodale, of the Oakenholt Paper Works, has been qualified as a magistrate of the borough of Flint. The Archdeacon of Bangor and the Rev. T. Warren Trevor, rural dean, opened an inquiry on Tuesday as to the non-performance of service for the last nine Sundays in the parish church of Llandegfan, of which the Rev. J. Williams Meyrick (Beaumaris) is the rector. Mr. Gladstone has gone through his brilliant campaign with completely unimpaired health. His voice has not only stood the enormous strain put upon it, but was as clear and strong at the end as at the beginning. The members of Mr. Gladstone's family are surprised at the vigour and elasticity which he has displayed. They were afraid that he would be somewhat ex- hausted by his labours, but he is now as fresh and energetic as when he left Hawarden. ILL^BSS OF PROFESSOR HOWELLS, OF TREVECCA.—We regret to hear that the Rev. Professor Howells, of Trevecca College, is seriously ill. The rev. gentleman had a severe attack of rheumatism about three weeks ago, which compelled him to keep to his house. Since then his illness has taken various forms, and this week infbmmation on the lungs has set in. His son, Dr. Howells, of Talgarth, is in constant attendance. On account of his advanced age, the condition of Professor Ilowells is such as to cause much anxiety. QUININE BITTERS MANUFACTURING COM- PANY, LIMITED.—The statutory meeting of the above company was held at the offices of the solicitors of the company, 8, Old Jewry, London, on Thursday, at 12 o'clock. Mr. G. R. Barclay was voted to the chair, and remarked that there were no accounts or report, nor any resolution, but he had great pleasure in stating that since the business had been taken over by the company it had continued in a most flourishing condition, and had already earned sufficient to pay 1 per cent. upon the paid up capital to March 31st, 1889. The directors have resolved that an interim dividend, at the rate of 10 per cent. per annum, up to November 30th, 1888, shall be paid assoon after that date as practicable. SUICIDE OF A WELSH NRWSPAPER PRO- PRIETOR.—An inquest was held on Monday on the body of Wm. J. Morgan, proprietor of the Welshman newspaper, Carmarthen, who was found drowned in a tank of water in his machine room on Sunday. Evidence was produced of insanity in the family. There was a clean 'cut wound in the deceased's neck, and the bed- clothes in his room were saturated with blood. Deceased appears to have cut himself in his room, and tied a scarf over the wound, and walked a distance of a quarter of a mile to the office, where two of his men Saw liim on Sunday. After they left him, at ten o'clccfc, he had got into the tank and drowned himsalf.—The jury returned a verdict of Temporary insanity. ^GENEROSITY OF LORD ABERDARE AND MR. F. L. DAVIS.—Lord Aberdare and Mr. F. L. Davis, of Ferndale, in view of the decision of the councd which has been based on consider- ation of finance, have made what we are sure will be deemed extremely generous and handsome offers to the South Wales College. Mr. F. L. Davis, we understand, is prepared to endow one or more scholarships to the extent of £.50 a year for five years, and Lord Aberdare will add a scholarship of £25 for three years in addition to an exhibition of £10 to be given by the college. It is to be hoped that other generous friends of Welsh education will come forward in this period of difficulty and enable the college to offer an adequate number of scholarships as well as exhibitions for competition at the entrance examination in September of next year. Mr. Gladstone, it would appear, is never at rest. If the man of fourscore is not engaged in some great political campaign, or pouring forth in the H-tune of Commons, he is employed in literary work for various magazines. One of the right hon. gentleman's latest contributions is that to the Youth's Companion, a periodical published in B Iston. in which he deals with the statistics of the future of the English-speaking race. The number of persons who speak our language at the present time is about 105 millions, but, we are told, by estimation, that in twelve years—that is in lf)00 -it will be 120 millions, while in a century 'n advance of that date the number will reach 840 millions. The member for Midlothian, in the same article, makes another interesting statement, to the effect that in 112 years 700 millions will speak English as Americans. THE ÐER SALMON FISHERIES.—Mr. Samuel Smith, M.P. for Flintshire, has addressed a lengthy letter to the Houxe Secretary in refer- ence to the recent resolution of the River Dee Conservators prohibiting the use of trammel nets by fishermen on the Dee when taking salmon. Mr. Smith urges that this regulation will inflict a serions hardship on fishermen and deprive them of their livelihood. The fishermen pay two- thirds of the revenue derived by the fislury board, whereas they have one representative on it, the majority being riparian owners from the upper reaches, interests are very frequently directed contrary to those of the public. Mr. Smith asks for a commissioner to be sent down, in which case the fi-hermeu ar<i prepared t.) prove that the scarcity of salmon in the Dee is due to the dryness of the season and the absence of' freshets, preventing the fish fro:n running up. and to the bad state of the river between Chester and the sea. The Executive Committee of the Cymru Fydd Society met recently, and decided to organise a series of public meetings to be held during tbe coming winter at their various branches in Lon- don. The first will be held on the 21st Novem- ber, at Fetter-lane Chapel. The committee has invited Mr. Pritchard Morgan, M P., and Mr. R. Foulkes Griffiths to speak on the same platform on this occasion. The subject for discussion is, How best to promote the aims of the Welsh National Council." Mr. T. Howell Williams and Mr. T. Woodward Owen were appointed to re- present the society at the Birmingham Con- ference, and to aid in forming a branch of the Cymru Fydd Society in Birmingham. A sub- committee was appointed to consider the da- sirableness of forming a Welsh Club in London. Mr. T. H. Gilbert, one of the society's secretaries, is announced to open a discussion on Home Rule for Wales" before the Birkbeck Debating Society early in the ensuing month. The annual dinner of the Cymmrodorion Society will be held in London about the end of November, and the lecture session will com- mence in the ensuing month. It is understood that the contemplated arrangement include the discussion of many points of special interest to students of Celtic history and Celtic lore. Mr. Alfred N. Palmer, whose researches into the History of Ancient Tenures of Land in the Marches of North Wales and into the History the Town and Parish of Wrexham have com- manded such well-uerited approval, is expected to read a paper on Bangor Monachorum, in which he will probably deal with the recovery by Welshmen, and so as to speak, the re-Cym- ricisatioa of the large districts in Northern Powys in the 11th century, which has been at an earlier date conquered and thoroughly settled by Englishmen. Those Welsh scholars who know what vast treasures of Wel-ib historical M.S.S. are hidden in t'le Record Offices will be glad to know that Mr. R. Arthur Roberts, who has a special knowledge of the subject, has promised to read 11 paper in the course of the session on The Public Records relating to Wales." Another paper of great interest will be a contribution of Professor Sayce's on the Legend of King Bladud at Bith. Professor Sayce will in ali probability throw new light upon the early British settlement in the West of England. Papers are also promised by Judge Brynmor Jones, the Rev. II. Elvet Lewis, Mr. Uenrý Owen, B.C.L, and others. The second number of the ninth volume of Y Cymmrodor lvis just been issued to the sub- scribers. It opens with the very interesting paper (now enlarged and re -arranged) on the Welsh Shires by Professor Tout, of Lampeter. This is followed by a valuable contribution to Welsh Folk Lore in the shape of Mr. E. Sidney Hartland's paper on Welsh Folk Medicine, founded on the Vfodlygon Myddfai" book published by the Welsh MS6. Society. Then we have further Observations on the Welsh Nouns, Adjectives, and Adverbs, by Ur. Max Nettlau, of Vienna, with notes by Professor Rhys, and a copious and highly interesting index to Dr. Nettlau's Abbreviations (which are occasionally most mystifying) compiled by Mr. Egerton Phillimore. The Rev. Elias Owen writes on Cytiau'r Gwyddelod the Rev. John Davies on "Sir William Jones as an Author;" hiid Mr. Joseph Bennett 011 the Possibilities of Welsh Music." Under the competent editorship of Mr. Gwenogvryn Evans we have extracts from the Hengwrt MS. 34, known as the Kwtta Kyvar- wydd, which is supposed to have been written for the most part by Gwilym Tew of Glamorgan, who flourished in the middle of the 15th century. The extracts refer to Kymydeu a Chantrevi Kymry (the commotes and hundreds of Wales), and are printed from a transcript by Mr. Evans. Footnotes give alternative readings found in the Hengwrt MS. 275 in the autograph of John Jones of Gellilyfdy. Mr. Phillimore supplies a transcript of a small Welsh fragment of a re- ligious character, of about the end of the 16th century, which is stitched into the end of Hengwrt MS. 202. The fragment is in many ways very curious. Reviews of Llyvyr Du Caerfyrddin, Palmer's Ancient Tenures of Land, and Chevalier Lloyd's History of Powys-Fadog make up a number which reflects high credit on the active editor. Dr. Isambard Owen. ASTRONOMY.— The second lecture on this subject was given by Professor Grey at the Town Hall, Denbigh, and was listened to with great appreciation by the large audience that had assembled. It was feared that some mishap had befallen this vessel owing to her making a long passage. THE DENBIGH FAIR, on Tuesday was well attended, and prices were better than they have been for some time. Stock for Christmas market was in great demand.—At the market on Wednesday some brisk business was done. Wheat sold at 30s. 8}d. per quarter, and barley at 28s. 9fd. ditto. A DISHONEST BAILIFF AT DENBIGH.—At the county police court, on Wednesday, before Mr. W. D. W. Griffith and Dr. Tumour, Edward Spriggs, lately a bailiff in the employ of Mr. T. D. Thomas, Park Postyn, was charged with stealing a turkey and a goose, value 10s, the property of his master, on November 1st.—Mr. R. Lloyd Williams (of Messrs. Gold Edwards and Co.) prosecuted. —Accused was sent to gaol for six weeks. Queen-street, Cardiff. LLANRWST SANITARY AUTHORITY:—Tuesday. Present: Mr. P. Molntyre (chairman), Messrs. Daniel Williams and J. Evans Jones (vice-chair- men), the Revs. J. Gower, J. Pughe Evans, Messrs. R. Rowlinson, Richard Morris, H. Pierce (the clerk), and E. Evans (surveyor).—The Rev. J. Gower took objection to a demand made upon Llanrhychwyn to repay a loan, when the pro- perty with respect to which the loan was obtained had been transferred to Trefriw parish. —The Clerk said that to make a change would be very difficult, as the parish of Llanrhychwyn had been mortgaged for the loan.—Mr. Gower thought it was robbing Llanrhychwyn by making it pay back the loan.—Mr. Evans Jones objected to Mr. Gower always wanting to throw the rates on Tlefriw. The clerk was directed to ascertain in what way Trefriw could be rated so as to repay the loan in question.—It was decided to decline the offer of £20 a year made by the highway board for cleaning the Llanrwst streets. —The contractor of the drainage work at Llan- rwst asked for an advance of £140 upon bis contract—At the suggestion of the surveyor, £100 was advanced. LOCAL WILL CASE.—On Tuesday, the case of Parry v. Jones came before Mr. Justice Kay in the Chancery Division. Mr. Alexander (in- structed by Messrs. Johnson and Nelson, soli- citors, Llandudno) appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr. H. Owen (instructed by Mr. Arthen O. Owen, solicitor. Pwllheli) for "the defendants. The litigation arose in consequence of a dispute concerning the construction of the will of the late Griffith Pritchard, retired farmer, of PIas Gwyn, Bottwno £ Pwllheli. The testator be- queathed his freehold farm called Plas Gwyn to the plaintiff (Miss Jane Parry), and declared that no one else was to have any furniture or anything else out of the same during her spinsterhood. The defendants, who are the executors, claimed to be entitled to certain cattle, a pig, the testator's watch, some twenty odd pounds cash in thejjbouse, and a deposit- note, all of which were on the premises at his death. An originating summons was taken out by the plaintiff to determine what passed under the bequest, and this was adjourned into court for argument. His lordship decided that the plaintiff was entitled during spinsterhood to the cattle and pig, and anything else on the pre- mises capable of use and enjoyment therewith, but he held that the watch, cash, and deposit- note were not within the words of the bequest. The plaintiff's costs were allowed out of the estate. CARNARVON PRIMROSE LEAGUE EVTERTAIN- MRNTS.—The second of a winter series of thesp entertainments was held at the Conservative Club nn Monday evening last. Although there was a charge made for admission, scores of people failed to get in, so crowded was the room. Mr. G. W. D. Assheton Smith, Vaynol, presided; and. in opening the proceedings, he took the opportunity of expressing his sincere thanks to the members of the League and also the members of the Carnarvon Workingmen's Con- servative Club for the very handsome addresses they had presented to Mrs. Assheton Smith and himself on the occasion of their marriage. He also wished to thank the inhabitants of Carnar- von generally for the extraordinary interest they had taken on that occasion. Had he known what was going to take place, he and Mrs. Assheton-Smith would certainly have been pre- sent to witness the grand display at Carnarvon on their wedding day. Unfortunately, owing to an accident to her hand and a severe cold, Mrs. Assheton Smith was unable to be present at the entertainment. She was most anxious to come, but the doctor would not permit her. He sincerely hoped that these popular gatherings would be continued annually throughout the winter months, as they were the means of uni- ting the different classes of the party together in fighting for the Empire and Liberty."—A very successful and interesting programme was afterwards gone through, in which the following took part:—Mrs. Williams (Llanwnda Vicaraee); Miss Pugh-Griffith (Twthill); Mrs. Jones (Min- afon); Miss Lloyd Griffith, and Miss Lumley Roberts; Messrs. Also, upon the motion of Captain Wynn Griffith, J.P., seconded by Mr Richard Thomas, J.P., a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr. Assheton Smith for presiding. SAD. SUICIDE AT DE.VBIGH,— An inquest was held by Dr. Pierce, coroner, on Saturday on the body of Robert Jone\ 43, a maltster in the employ of Mr. W. H. Parry, who committed suicide on the previous day by hanging himself at the Brook House maltkiln.—A verdict of temporary insanity was returned. TIMELY RESCUE BY A PWLLHELI CAPTAIN.— On Sunday, the 4th inst, during a fearful gale in the English Channel, Capt. Amos Williams, of the "Water-bird" of Pwllheli, picked up the crew of a lar^e steamer which had foundered in collision. The "Water-bird"arrived at Carnarvon, a day or two ago, with a cargo of timber from Norway. Through Mr. Hugh Richards, broker, Carnarvon, Capt. Williams has been warmly thanked for the courage and kindness shewn y him to the unfortunate men of the ill-fated steamer. Jones Williams said that when he visited the infant school the other day he found the arrears of school fees to be £70 to £74. He desired to know how so large a sum had been allowed to accumulate.— The Rev. J. Titley Williams said he had intended moving a resolution bearing upon the subject.— Mr. Isgoed Jones remarked that the arrears had accumulated year by year ever since the board was formed.—Mr. Isgoed Jones next called at- tention to a report sent to a contemporary by a correspondent" respecting the board, and asserted that the report was sent by the Rev. J. Titley Williams, as it was a verbatim account of a speech made at the previous meeting by Mr. Titley Williams. He (Mr. Jones) strongly con- demned the rev. gentleman for sending the report. It was a wrong action on the part of a member of the board. In thut report Mr. Wil- liams held him, as vice-chairman, to be directly responsible for the irregular attendance of children at schools. He consequently called upon Mr. Titley Williams either to withdraw what he had said in the report or to apologise— Mr. Titley Williams declined doing anything of the kind. He held that what had appeared in the paper was founded upon facts and statements which could be proved and that further facts could be adduced, if necessary. He felt very much hurt at the line of conduct Mr. Isgoed Jones had adopted.—Mr. Isgoed Jones said his feelings were also very much hurt at what ap- peared in the paper.—Mr. Titley Williams said that if Mr. Isgoed Jones objected to what had appeared he too could write to the paper. He would be perfectly willing to answer Mr. Jones j and sign his name to the letter.—The discussion waxed somewhat warm,—The Chairman re- marked that if certain people wanted to ad- vertise themselves in the papers they could do so he did not care for that.—Mr. Jones Williams held that the discussion was quite foreign to the business of the board. Mr. Isgoed Jones was present at the previous meeting and had ample opportunity to Correct Mr. Titley Williams.—The subject then dropped. Mr. Lloyd Griffith will shortly issue his address as a candidate for the County Council. Griffith, Vronheulog, Upper Bangor, appears amongst the list of successful candidates at the preliminary law examination which was recently held at Liverpool. ROMAN LAW.—Mr. J. Bryn Roberts, M.P., and Mr. W. Cadwaladr Davies, registrar of the University College of North Wales, were among the 69 who successfully passed the examination in Roman Law, recently held by the legal council. The candidates numbered 81. DEATH OF LADY WILLOUGHBY DE ERESBY.— Lady Willoughby de Eresby died at her seat, Grimthorpe Castle, Bourne, Lincolnshire, on Tuesday afternoon. Her ladyship has been an invalid for some considerable time past, and was in her 79th year. The Welsh seat of the family is Gwydir Castle, Llanrwst. The Rev. John Evans, of Bangor, has com- menced anoth r series of popular free lectures. "The -late Sir Hugh Owen"—philanthropist, patriot, and educationist-was:thesubject otthe first, which was given in Horeb schoolroom on Monday evening. The lecture was in Mr. Evans's happiest style. THE NATIONAL EISTEDDFOD OF 1890 AT BANGOR.—The leading men of the city, including the Dean, the Mayor (Alderman Charles Pierce), Principal Reichel, and other gentlemen con- nected with the University College, are taking the liveliest interest in this movement. Should there be any surplus, one-half will be given to the National Eisteddfod Association and the other divided between the North Wales Scholar- ship Association, the Carnarvonshire and Anglesey Infirmary, and the Training-ship "Clio." THE LIVERPOOL SCHOOL-SHIP CONWAY." -Sir Robert Ball, F.R.S., the Astronomer Royal of Ireland, delivered a very interesting and in- structive lecture, on Saturday evening last, to the cadets on board the "Conway," the subject being An evening with the modern telescope." The lecture was beautifully illustrated by Mr. Knott, of Elliott,-street, Liverpool. This lecture was one of a series, some of which have been given, and others remain yet to be delivered. Godber, locomotive foreman, formerly of the Junction and now of Bangor, was presented with a set of China dinner service and a ship barotomer on the occasion of his marriage. Mr. Nivet, successor to Mr. Godber, was chairman of the presentation committee; Mr. R. Johnson the treasurer, and Mr. J. Davies secretary.J MARRIAGE OF MR. DAN RHYS, CARNARVON.— On Tuesday last, at the Everton Village Welsh Baptist Church, Liverpool, Mr. Dan Rhys, of Carnarvon, w,is married to Sallie, third daughter of Mr. William E. Edwards, her Majesty's Customs, Liverpool. The ceremony was per- formed by the Rev. J. H. Atkinson. Mr. Rhys has won golden opinions as the courteous and indefatigable secretary of one National Eisteddfod and subsequently at several local societies, and is hen in high esteem north and south of the Principality. Mrs. Rhys and himself have the best wishes of a host of frieads for their future happiness. AN IRISB. M.P., DROWNED OFF HOLYHEAD.— Mr. Douglas Pyne, M.P. for Waterford, it is re- ported, either fell or jumped overboard about midway between Holyhead and Dublin, on Tues- day night, and was drowned. The body has not been recovered. Mr. Pyne's beleaguerment in his castle, before his arrest at the House of Com- mons under the Crimes Act, made him a famous member of the Irish party. A later telegram says:—Ther6 is now hardly any doubt that it ,was Mr. Pyne, M.P., who was drowned on Tues- day night between Holyhead and Dublin. The captain states that he thinks he recognised him, and adds that, whoever it was, the gentleman undoubtedly committed suicide. SOUTH: BEACH, PWLLHELI. —For the last balf-a-century there have been numerous designs and projects with a view of building on the South Beach, Pwllheli. Rumours have again and again been afloat of the formation of companies to carry this out, and it was only some 12 or 18 months since that one of these was promoted by a firm of London engineers with a capital of .£1.25,000. Representative meetings were held in the town; the inhabitants were for the time wild with enthusiasm. But alas! for want of spirit and confidence the movement collapsed. However, a few towns- men sought to know if they could in any way commence building operations on a small scale. These gentlemen were: Messrs. Edward Jones (mayor), Robert Jones, J.P., Plas Tan'rallt; and D. G. Davies, Rhianfa, who, with th:s end in view, communicated with the owners of the property until at last they secured two splendid building plots. They forthwith decided upon inviting tenders for the immediate construction of five houses, and the work has now been let to Messrs. John Jones, Samuel Roberts. Richard Jones, and William Jones-all of Pwllheli. On Thursday morning, the building operations began, when Mr. Edward Jones (the mayor) cut the first sod in the presence of a number of enthusiastic townsmen. His worship sub- sequently made a humorous speech, which was much relished by his audience. A vote of thanks was accorded to Messrs Ilobert Jones and D. G. Davies for their indefatigable exertions in connection with the movement. Both Mr. Jones and Mr. Davies also spoke, and wished the movement every success. We understand that the houses are to be ready in six months, in time for the summer season. A sea. wall and a promenade are also to be constructed in the course of the winter.

On Saturday counsel tor the Times lodged in the airst Division of the Court of Session, Edinburgh, « reclaiming note against the judgment of Lord Kinnear m the case of l'arnoll v. the Times, allowing proof of jurisdiction. The reclaiming cote was sent to the summary roll, and will be heacd shortly. In the meantime luvtlier precedure befort Lord Kinnear is stopped. On Saturday afternoon a cabman was drivin0- into Waterloo Railway station, wliou the hiud wheels of his cab came into collision with the gates, whereby' the cabman was thrown down and severely injured. A gentlemen in the cab was also hurt. Both per- sons were taken to St. Ihomas's Hospital, and these it was iound that the cabman's injuries were so serious that he is scarcely expectcd to recover. As the Loudon express was passing over Runcorn Budge a well-dressed lady fell from a second-clasa compartment on to the permanent way. Several platelayers on the spot picked her up in an uncon- scious state, and conveyed her to Widnes Accident Hospital, where she lies in a precarious condition. She was in tho act of throwing away the contents of a teapot when the accident occurred The Pesth newspapers describe King Milan's situation as Tory critical. They say that though it is certain he will open the Great Skuptschina, it is very possible that he may not be there to close it. Lord Onslow will not take up his appointment as Governor of New Zealand until the beginning of the year, but will retire from the Board of Trade early next month. Major-General John Mitchell has died at Totnes, aged seventy-nine. He had served in the Crimea, and received major-general's ranfc in 1864. At the Marlborough Street Police Court, London, F. C. Wallis, landlord of the Duke's Head public- house, Frith Street, was fined t50 and costs for allowing betting in his house. AN orthwich telegram says an important discovery has been made, and alter all the anti-salt monopoly league may not be required. A strike is threatened among the salt workmen. In the Queen's Bonch Division, Miss W. H* Wicks has recovered jE150 from Mr. S. C. C. Cor- nick, an Ashford nurseryman, as damages forbreaoh of promise of marriage. JLulormation has been received at Tripoli accord- ing to which a great battle has been fought in the Soudan between the followers of the Mahdi and the Sultan of Wadai's people. The Mahdists, who numbered 70,000, were repulsed with a loss of 3,000 killed. A report has reached Drogheda that six dead bodies have been washed ashore at Laytown Strand, within five miles of that town. Large quantities of wreckage were also washed ashore, including boxes of fruit. It is supposed that some large foreign vessel has foundered on the coast. A farmer named Myles M'Keowa haa been found in a field about half a mile from Newry, with his skull fractured and several wounds on his faee.| He was unconscious when found. The doctors believe that his recovery is impossible. No arrests have been made in conneotion with the affair. J

LATEST NEWS. HEAVY GALE IN THE IRISH CHANNEL. TERRIBLE WRECKS AND GALLANT LIFEBOAT SERVICES. HOLYHEAD, FRIDAY MORNING. A FKABFUL south-westerly gale is raging in the Irish Channel this morniug. and great number of shipping have sought refuge in the bay. Several serious disasters have already occurred. A ship is ashore in Church Bay, opposite Holy- head. The coast guard, with life-saving appara- tus, in charge of Mr. Williams, chief officer, have just left for the scene of the wreck. The vessel is fast ashore, and will speedily break up. The crew can be seen in the rigsing clinging for their lives to the masts. It is feared that some have already been washed away. A vessel is ashore in Carnarvon Bay, and has telegraphed for help. The Holyhead lifeboat has just been out to the assistance of a German barqae in peril outside. She was being towed in by the powerful tugboat Welcome," and when towing the rope broke, and the tug had to abandon her. The tug-boat "Kuight of St. George" and the life- beat crew then went to her aid. The captain's wife was put aboard the lifeboat, anft brought safely ashore, and the boat has again gallantly left to bring off the crew, the tug-boat remain- ing alongside to render assistance if necessary. The passengers by the Irish mail-boat crossing from Dublin to Holyhead experienced the full burst of the gale, the waves breaking clean over the storm decks.

BANGOR AND BMUMARTS UNION ALLEGED IRREGULARITIES CONNECTED WITH THE WORKHOUSE. AT a meeting of the Bangor and Beaumaris Union, held this morning, was submitted the report of an emergency meeting held for the purpose of investigating various charges made against an officer. That committee was of opinion that there had been irregularities which that officer, however, denied. They also recom- mended that he be suspended and a report made to the Local Government Board. The latter board, in reply to the first communication of the guardians, wrote to state that they had asked the officer in question to furnish them with information; and, accompanied with a letter of this morning's, the Local Government Board enclosed his explanation, in which he denied the charges made against him, and submitted certifi- cates from Drs. E. O. Price, Langford Jones, and Williams, all of whom testified to his general conduct.-The Chairman said the matter was now in the hands of the guardians. Mr. David Williams said that, looking at the matter as an outsider, he tnousht the committee or the emergency board had acted rather hastily in the matter. Considering it was the officer's first offence, to all appearance, and credited by mostlguardians as being a very efficient officer, he (Mr. Williams), if in order, would move that the suspension be re-called. This was over-ruled by the chairman, and after some discussion the committee retired to pre- pare a recommendation to the board, and after a long consultation the chairman (Mr. Bulkeley Price) said that the committee, after giving care- ful consideration to the officer's communication, recommended that the Local Government Board be asked to institute an inquiry as early as possible. mmmmmmimm—mm
