- Cycling.;',)
Cycling. ',) AeetyJine lamps are not considered expensive as they all can be bought with a (s)cent. Miss C-issie Loftus, like hosts of other ladies in Ver profession, is a very ardent cyclist. ^The railway test case of the National Cyclists Lnion cost the nice little round sum of £ 195, The reads this winter have been most suitable for testing the non-siipping qualities of the new Dunlop tyres for 18'jy, and they have not been found wanting. On February 13tli, another six days torture will commence at San Francisco, wheu most 'of the competitors in the recent race in New York will again entertain the public. IVe would rather un- dergo the trials and privations of a journey to Kiondyke for gold, than ride through a six days race. 11-e have prcviou-Iy mentioned the fact that the six days race at New York was not carried out un- der the rules of the League of American wheelmen. therefore the competitors and those who indulged in spectacle riding, were all suspended and fined 5 the fines in all amounting to £ 52o. of ^bis amount stands debited to Tavlor, who unless he pays np, will find himself out of work as his suspension holds good all over the world. However bad the cycle trade may be at home, cycle manufacturers have occasion to congratulate themselves that legislators are not so stringent in raising money .as they are in Georgia St tes^C Besides the legitimate expenses in connf tion N, their business, all cycle manufacturers Jilt the. have to pay a yearly tax of £ 40 and a '•••■tiier for every agent, for each county in whi. hey do business for the firm. It is very much .• case of hanging a dying man. Speaking at a meeting of the New 1 =4 A.( emy of Medicine on the subject of children of ten- der years indulging in cycling. Dr. Elliot said; he considered that at an early age the ere soft and the ligaments undeveloped and unlit;'id tc stand the special requirements of riding a bicycle, and the result might be a relaxed li, system. Bicycle riding by children, tended n dis- proportionate developments of the legs ^e. com- pared with the arms. So often have we referred in adverse tones • tho rational" costume that our readers r3ay bly be labouring under the erroneous ic:fta ths* we are bias, and that no good points in õ.3 lu\vui; would receive any mark of approval from our pen. Such is not the case, for as much as we disapprove of ladies sporting mens clothes, with a piece of frill to give them a feminal air,we are always ready o:give credit where credit is due, but opportunities of praising the" rationalists" cause are so rare.that our writings, when touching on the subject, may give one the above impression. There is however a very strong point in favour of rationals," which ought, if anything, tend to induce many of our lady riders to discard the skirts and don the bloomers, and this is, with rationals the fair riders do not run the risk of having their skirts caught in the pedals, a misfortune which might have serious results and which before now have proved fatal. Other scribes have from time to time brought this advantage forward, but still the shirtless brigade do not seem to increase; there is a canker-worm at the roots and that canker-worm is "Modesty "held so dear with women. The London wheelmen will be losing one of the most popular racing men of the day, in A. E. Walters, who has definitely decided to give home tracks the cold shoulder and to confine his racing to Paris, during the coming season. The reason of this departure,is because he has changed his mount and will be riding a French made bicycle. Although astride a new make of cycle, Walters will still fa- vour the Dunlop tyres :which in the past have so materially assisted him by their speed qualities. With the aid of Motor pacing Walters hopes to put a record season to his credit. Walters is no chicken at the game of racing. having started as far back as 1892 in which year he won seven prizes and also the championship of the Tennysonian C. C., which club by the way, is still in existence and was formed in connection with the Tennyson School. In 1893 he won about 13 prizes and the following year shone forth as one of the best amateurs of the day by carrying dS the 100 miles championship of the Polytechnic C.C., and the twelve hours race for the Anchor Shield at Herne Hill. This was practically the close of Walters career as an amateur. After leaving the amateurs, Walters was not long gaining a position amongst the professionals, breaking the twelve hours record as an on-set. In 1^97 he was successful in winning the twelve hours race for the Abingdon Challenge Cup, and also in establishing his first claim in the Catford Gold Vase, beating in this race such good men as J. W. Stocks and A. A. Chase. In the same year on a tandem bicycle in company with M. A. Holbein. be improved upon the twelve hours road record Last year Walters paid more attention to matches and record rides in both of which he was as equally successful, therefore if the performances of 1899 are to eclipse those of previous years, Walters will indeed have to give a good account of himself. The case of the butcher boy sprinting on his machine to avoid a collision with a pack of hounds, and who was afterwards chased by Lor(I IVilloughby de Broke and his son, and charged by them for furious riding, must be fresh in memory of most of our readers and how afterwards when suing the noble Lord for damage done to himself and naclnne. he was only awarded sixpence and not allowed costs. though he for his slight offence had been fined 13 and costs. From commencement to finish it was one of the most unjust cases we have aver heard of. and yet. we now find the Rev. Hon. \V. R Yernev, Rector of Ligbthorne and Vicar of Chesterton, brother of the aforesaid noble Lord and residing in the same county, seceding from the Tory party on the plea of injustice over the ra- ting tithes, lie says It is only justice we ask for and jnsticc we mean to have." It will be remem- bered that the chairman on the bench was a clergy- man u ho took advantage of his position to taun* v at the butcher boy during his trial.
