MOUNTAIN ASH DISTRICTI COUNCIL.'
MOUNTAIN ASH DISTRICT COUNCIL. On Tuesday, Mi- Charles Maddox, J.P., presiding. Also present: Messrs. Bruce .Jones, J.P., D. Rogers, W. Millar, D. J. Lewis, Thos. Jones, Griffith Evans, J.P., George Neighbour, Noah Bowles, Dr. T'. Davies, G. H. Hall, W. Lamburn, Win. Davies, with Mr. A. rincombe (clerk), Mr. W. G. Thomas (surveyor), Mr. F. Stock (accountant), Dr. Llewelyn Wil- liams, D.S.O., and Mr. H. T. Jones (sanitary inspector). NELSON DAY. There was a letter from the Navy League asking the Council to co-operate in a public celebration of Nelson Day, 21st October next.—Resolved to accede to the request PENRHIWCEIBER HOUSING SCHEME. The Clerk read a communication from a Government Department objecting to the Council's Penrhiwceiber housing scheme on the ground that the price asked for the land was excessive. It ap- pears that the scheme was for 200 houses, and the Council are acquiring 25 acres from Major Vaughan Lee at t200 per acre. This will mean a delay, of a couple of months, inasmuch as the Coun- cil cannot proceed with the work until a Government representative comes down to fix a fair price for the land, the Council now acting under the Compul- sory clause in the Acquisition of Land. for the erection of Houses. A BUILDING COMPANY AND UNOCCUPIED HOUSE. Mr. Hall referred to the action of the Fulgent Building Co., Cardiff, in refus- ing' to let a house now vacant in Morris Avenue, preferring to sell it. It ap- peared, added Mr. Hall, that that was the policy of the Co. Whenever a house became vacant they would not let it to a new tenant, but waited until they got a buyer. He would like to know whether the Council had any powers to deal with the matter. The Clerk said he could write to the Local Government Board, but he did not think the Council had any power. Mr. Hall moved that the clerk take the matter up, and the motion was car- ried. WAR PENSIONS COMMITTEE. A circular re formation of a local Naval and Military Pensions Committee was read, and the selection of members j was deferred. SCAVENGING CONTRACTS. I Arising from a discussion respecting an application from Mr. R. Llewelyn to Mr. T. Hill, requesting the latter to in- crease the wages of hauliers employed on Council work by 1^-d. per hour, Mr. Hall reminded the Council that when the Ii last scavenging contract was made they decided to consider later on whether they could not make some better ar- rangements next year. He suggested, Ithat they institute inquiries as to how neighbouring authorities like Pontypridd were managing, and convene a meeting of the Scavenging Committee soon.—The suggestion was adopted. ¡ PROFITEERING ACT. The Clerk read a circular requesting the Council to appoint a committee to deal with the above. Aberdare, added the Clerk, had suggested a joint Tri- bunal composed of representatives from Aberdare and Mountain Ash. Mr. B. Jones said the appointment of a committee would have a wholesome ef- fect on traders. With regard to a joint Tribunal he did not know howr that would work. He preferred appointing one on thpir own. would work. He preferred appointing one on thpir own. Mr. Lamburn moved that they act by themselves. Mr. Hall seconded, and the motion was adopted. OPEN MARKETS. Mr. Hall remarked that they had read of open markets held in various places. He wished to ask the surveyor to report v hether there were suitable open spaces in Mountain Ash and dis- trict which could be utilised for that. purpose. The stalls could be managed by discharged soldiers, etc. In Cardiff the pi'.ces had been considerably re-. duced by means of the street markets. There was ample room on the Nayiga- tion grounds, Mountain Ash, for a few stalls, and other places might be found I in the other wards. Mr. Bruce Jones said there was a big open space opposite the T.V.R. station, Abercynon, near William Street, Mr. Hall moved that the surveyor make enquiries at Mountain Ash, Pen- rhiweeiber, Abercynon, and Ynysybwi. Dr. T. Davies seconded, and the motion was agreed to. MUNICIPAL EMPLOYEES. The Clerk read the arbitration award: given at Cardiff on the application of municipal workers for increased wages and holidays with pay. The arbitrator had awarded 6s. per week increase to- all able-bodied workers and 6 davs' holi- days with pay, in addition to the 8, National Bank Holidays. MAYOR TO "MAYOR." MOUNTAIN ASH MAN AND HIS- NATIVE TOWN. The Clerk said he was in receipt of a letter and photos addressed to The Mayor of Mountain Ash." They were sent by Mr. J. F. Hayward, Mayor of Issachar, one of the provinces of Bris- bane, Australia, and the photos were of himself and wife, and he sent his greet- ings to the Council as a humble towns- man of Mountain Ash. Although, he. continued, it was his lot to leave. his native home, he felt a strong desire to, see the old town of Mountain Ash. Mv heart still beats for the land of mv birth." Mr. Noah Bowles said he had read in the Weekly Post a few weeks ago that the Mayor of that town was a native of Mountain Ash. He moved that the clerk reply to Mr. Hayward expressing the gratitude of the Council for the letter and photos, and wishing him further success and long life. Mr. Bruce Jones seconded. Mr. Rogers: The letter to be signed by the Mayor and Town Clerk. (Laugh- ter). The motion was agreed to.
